Early Morning SmokeOut at The GOAT

14 strong at The Greatest AO Of All Time for a familiar, yet pretty thorough, beatdown.

No FNG’s and a quick disclaimer, where YHC pledged to be the Q for the entire day, only to be proven wrong almost immediately after as I turned it over to the one and only… Pilgrim’s Progress, who kicked us off.

The Thang:

Pilgrim’s Progress called each in cadence:

  • SSH x 20
  • Grass Pickers x 10
  • Mountain Climbers x 10
  • Merkins x 10
  • CDDs x 10

Next up, Sizzle Suicides (starting from Floyd & Blackies, up the hill on 8th):

  • Run 1 pole – 10 LBCs
  • Run back – 10 LBCs
  • Run 2 poles – 20 LBCs
  • Run back – 20 LBCs
  • Run 3 poles – 30 LBCs
  • Run Back – 30 LBCs
  • Run 4 poles – 40 LBCs

Then to the Rec Center for a round of Dora.  For this Dora, we’d start from the entrance to the Rec Center parking lot, find the biggest hill you could find, and Nur to the parking spaces in front of the apartments.  Then, mosey back.  In the meantime, your partner works towards these exercises:

  • 100 Hand-Release Merkins
  • 200 Squats
  • 300 Flutter Kicks

This was a grind.  The first round of HRM weren’t awful.  The second round were.  Also Nurring up that hill got old quick, but we at least got to entertain some guy in his parked car taking his early morning smoke break.  Nothing like seeing a bunch of guys running backwards at your car when you’re getting stoned.  Had Sargento been there, I’m pretty sure he would have EH’d him.

Once all that nonsense was over with, we moseyed back to the stairs behind the shops, where Sausage wasn’t quite sure how to count to ten.  We wrapped things up with a Triple Nickel–one set of exercises at the bottom of the stairs, run up the stairs, one set of exercises at the top, run back around the building to the start.

The burpees got cut due to time, though I doubt anyone really minded after the work done earlier.  I hadn’t got my timing right yet in a Goat Q, so I wanted to wrap things up as close to the COT as possible.  Turns out we finished up right on time, thoroughly smoked.

Thanks to all for the prayers and the contacts while my son was sick and my family was quarantined.  It was my first time away since being a regular, and it sucked.  I can’t imagine how tough IR must be, when you mix the injury and not being able to get out there in The Gloom.

The Vertical Relationship Between Men

A man must be sharpened like a knife blade

Both a man and a knife are made to cut, but neither can be Effective until properly honed.

A knife is sharpened by a whetstone. While water is used to lubricate the whetstone prior to sharpening that is not where the “whet” part comes from. To whet actually means to sharpen, like with a man’s appetite and his curiosity. In other words, to whet both blade and man is to put on an edge, with a result that is sharp, dynamic and ready to cut. The unsharpened man is dull and lethargic, in-Effective as a Leader and ill-Prepared for the Obstacles he will face in his life.

Just as a man’s appetite for pure food must be whetted, so must his appetite for the heavy responsibility that comes with Leadership . The HIM acts as the Stone to the younger man’s Blade , providing the hard surface against which he becomes sharper and whetting his appetite for greater responsibility.

Hard looks and straight talk (tempered by love) get results

Because the desire of an older man to pass on what he has learned to a younger man is natural, the vertical relationship between Stone and Blade has existed since men first sought the Advantage of gathering together into Communities. But like all relationships, it takes skill and effort for the Whetstone to work. To obtain that skill, a HIM does not wait until he is retired to begin practicing it. He is about the business of Sharpening younger men even while he himself is being Sharpened.

Sharpening does not happen by accident. It must be done with Deliberatude within a vertical relationship between two men who set out to see it happen. It works best between men who are not at the same point of their journey. For a Blade to be Sharpened properly, the Stone must be the harder of the two, at least for a season.

Like the Shield Lock, the Whetstone is a relationship that is subject to the 3P: it must be Proximate, Purposeful and periodic to be Effective.

– Proximity requires the Stone to physically meet with his Blade. While it is fine (good even) for them to also talk on the telephone and email, that is not a replacement for the physical meeting where they can look each other in the eye. Hard looks and straight talk (tempered by love) get results. That cannot be done virtually.

– To be Purposeful, the meeting between the Stone and the Blade must be more than the kind of inconsequential pizza party a Club would have–it must have a particular Outcome in mind: the Acceleration of the Blade’s Preparedness. The Stone’s task within the Whetstone is to help the Blade get ready for the expected and be ready for the unexpected by both encouraging him to turn Pro and providing him with the Bricks he will need to build his own Guardrails. Just as a Workout should Accelerate the HIM’s Fitness, the Whetstone should Accelerate the Blade’s proper personal alignment.

– There is no set rule for the periodicity of the meeting between the Stone and the Blade. It must be frequent enough to be Effective but not so frequent that the Stone and Blade smother each other. This is something both men must determine through trial and error. However, because it is (by design) a Movement away from the Status Quo it will cause pain, and it is man’s general hardwiring to avoid pain. As a result, the Stone must be deliberate to ensure periodicity. Otherwise, his Blade will drift away to something easier.

The Whetstone is necessary for both the Blade and the Stone to Get Right

Through the Whetstone, the Blade receives something he lacked before, a honed edge to his life that he must possess to be Effective and have IMPACT on his Community. But the Stone gets something as well. In fulfilling his natural desire to pour into younger men he Accelerates his own pursuit of proper personal alignment.

Although we tend to think of hypocrisy in binary terms (as in you either are a hypocrite or you aren’t) the truth is that we all practice a bit of hypocrisy, at least subconsciously. None of our deeds match our words 100% of the time. Since we are all hypocrites, the question is one of degree–how big a gap is there between deed and word? The bigger it is, the less Right one will be. In other words, the Get Right requires the hypocrisy gap to be closing with Acceleration.

Nothing closes the hypocrisy gap for a man like having a Blade. Helping another man build his Guardrails through the formation of positive Habits strengthens the Stone’s Guardrails. This principle is reflected in the 12th Step of Alcoholics Anonymous: having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs. The act of carrying the message goes hand-in-hand with practicing the principles.

Hypocrisy is dependent upon selfishness and self-delusion. The Whetstone results in an abandonment of self which deprives hypocrisy the fuel it needs to survive. By talking the talk to his Blade, the Stone finds himself more Prepared to walk his own walk.

A flair for the exotic

12 HIMs showed at the AO formerly known as Martha’s House for a Monday morning start your week right bootcamp. YHC had his (son’s) trusty JBL with him and, with no sign of Roscoe present to hijack the playlist, it promised to be an uninterrupted session of musical and physical bliss! This is what happened…

Disclaimer, no FNGs but a cotter (Cougar) was present so full details were given.

Pledge of Allegiance, actually YHC scuttled this attempt as there was no flag flying to pledge to.

Mosey down to the hub of the baseball fields for the beatdown. Pledge of Allegiance upon arrival when the flag was spotted.

The Thang: The Alphabet

YHC first came up with this workout in December 2017 and the way it goes is that, for each letter in the alphabet, a corresponding exercise was chosen to do 10 reps of either OYO or IC as the Q desired on each one. YHC also explained that since printing out the exercise list almost 5 years ago it’s been my motivation to try as many new exercises as possible for my various Q’s and to note the date they’re done for reference. I’ve gotten through a bunch of them over time but there are still plenty to try. With as many exercises as we have available to us you’d think it wouldn’t be hard to come up with a list of one for each letter. Not so fast my friend, it actually can be quite challenging. Below are some of the more notable ones we did today:

  • Burpees – against my better judgement
  • Daniel Son – like the kick from Karate Kid! Finish Him!!!
  • E2K – aka Elbow to Knee or a variation of oblique crunches
  • Fairy Jacks – look it up
  • Jack Ass Merkin – from the President of the MHC, no less!
  • Outlaw – feet together you make an O shape, we did 10 each direction
  • The Chinook – overhead arm circles with a squat thrown in
  • Up Straddle Hops – looked an awful lot like Side Straddle Hops
  • X Factor – like a bigger version of dying cockroaches
  • Zebra Kicks – whatever

We made it through the first round with time to spare but YHC was prepared and this is what the next rotation looked like.

  • Chinook Squats – Looked an awful lot like The Chinook
  • Diamond Merkins – again, from the Pres
  • Fingertip Merkins – are you kidding me?!?
  • Goofballs – do you even know me?
  • J Lo’s – on all fours, leg parallel to ground, rotate to side then up in the air, worked the glutes a lot. Do each leg
  • Knerkin aka Chuck Norris merkins – another? this is getting stupid. The MHC needs to regroup. For membership inquiry’s DM me on Slack

We finished up the workout with an Indian Run back to the Pelicans and nobody died, so that was good.

Mt. Hollywood VQ

As 5:30 hit we had a great crowd already then 2 more rolled in making 17. We gave them 10 monkey humpers then moved on. I checked for any FNG’s and went straight to the warm up missing the disclaimer, blame it on my nervousness.

Warm Up: 25 SSH IC, 20 Overhead press IC, 15 Squats OYO

Pledge of allegiance then time to start.

The Thang: Plan was for 3 sets of 11’s at three different spots but we had to audible towards the end. We stayed for the first spot and took a lap around the parking lot. First 11 was Merkins at one end of the lot then LBC’s at the other. Nur to LBC’s then run back to merkins.

Mosey to First Presbyterian Church for our second spot and second set of 11’s. CDD’s at bottom of lot then run to top of the lot, sneaky little incline to WW1’s run back to CDD’s.

Mosey to Ida Rankin Elementary for our third spot and third set of 11’s. Due to time I called an audible to triple nickel. 5 Mike Tyson’s at one end of the lot then run to the other end for 5 American Hammers, Karaoke back to the start to continue.

Mosey back to flag with 3 minutes left.  Stretched a little and finished off with an F3 favorite 5 burpees. I did confess that I planned on burpees at each stop but quickly discarded those. That is time.

We had a great crowd and I definitely felt the support thank you men.

MLK – The Gossip Choice Morsel – Q Source (Language)

8 HIM’s posted on MLK day for some running/rucking.

Mayor showed up  looking like he was going on a date in his jeans, sweatshirt and brogans (Stogie with the call out).

COT: I shared Proverbs18:8 “Words of a gossip are like choice morsels.” and a little devotional to go along with it.

Hill time

Pledge to bank no longer there flag.

Early morning, chilly, but balmy 30, not quite the 17 earlier.

No Q in sight so the old fart stepped it up, literally up the River Hill.

Mailbox time with 10 reps, merkins, Imperial Walkers, squats, monkey humpers, lunges, at each mail delivery, to the top. On our sixes for LBC, flutters, heels to the sky in the cul. Thankfully no cars.

Down the hill to Bank wall for step ups, dips, and incline merkins.

Great PAX, solved many problems. Come get passed by a group of F runners.

No Q? Let’s do it anyway

No official Q for the Coconut Horse workout this morning.  We had a Q Source Q or Four Agreements Q….we haven’t quite figured out what to call it since we are not following the Q Source study.

We worked out anyway and had a great COT regardless.

Speak with Integrity.  Say only what you mean.  Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others.  Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.

Language

We ran, rucked , and/or walked. We got a little better today.

We then studied QSource Foundation F2 “Language”.

We, F3 Gastonia,  strive to build community leaders.   We are a tribe and we connect with our own language. We emphasize words that have  more meaning than that of society. As it is written in the QSource Index,  “Accountability” is a great example. “Accountability” means much more us as it does to others.

YHC took the word tribe to describe us as a tribe come from the book  “Tribes –  We need you to lead us” by Seth Godin.   In this book, it provides examples of people building/leading their “tribes” to  things greater than themselves.

We are in the “tribe” of F3 and have the resources to be great leaders in our home, community and work. It is up to us to take those skills outward and take the lead and make the changes we having passion for.

Frequently Asked Questions (faq)

Arrived early and saw Hushpuppy coming across the finish line and already had in a mile.  We got in another 1/2 mile pre-post so I could get warmed up.  I was hoping I would be prepped enough to lead the Pax of HIM’s for a not so much beatdown but just a great workout.  Mumblechatter abound, Watts Up quickly reminded me it was 07:00.

No warm up, who needs them.  Turns out I do, but such is.

Mosey to FPC church down back of parking lot.  Watch for the hidden ice spots.  Intent was to run some and exercise some.

The Thang:

No name:

25 Merkins/25 more Merkins – Up Pad steps, offer water to anyone thirsty from leftover trash in parking lot, back down hill watching for ice to where we started.

25 Crab Crunch (or something like that) / 25 more Crab Crunch / Up steps at The Pad, 25 more CC and hold in crab plank position for a hot minute.  Down hill and around to start.

50 squats / up steps to The Pad and 25 more.  Linus had a close bout with passing out.  I made it though, primarily cause I found out the Pax would drag me home instead of carry me.  I think they would actually finish the workout as well so I had motivation to stay puke and pass out free.  Down hill back to start.

50 calf raises (JJ gave up counting so he could mumblechat) / 25 merkins / 25 of those crab crunchie things / 25 squats.  Up steps, down steps…….back to start, done.

Modified 11’s:

Merkins / Dips, keep going in same circle.

Partner runs and holds:

Partner 1 runs a certain distance (I think it was a couple of miles) while partner 2 holds the following:

Plank / Al Gore / Crab Plank / 6″

Triple Nickel:

5 Flying Squirrels at each designated spot, keep running in circle pattern.  I called out modify to Pax as this was too much for me to handle.  Shout out to the Pax for keeping the same initial request.

Dora 1:

We have about 5 minutes.  Partner up, run a distance (about 3 miles), each Pax does 25 merkins.  Watts Up was actually looking for more.

Mosey home.  All questions answered, no referral to the FAQ section needed.
