The storm before the calm before the storm

Twelve HIMs showed up at The Ricky Bobby for a little Dora, Two Corners, and some futbol.

The Thang

10x Each (in Cadence):

  • SSH
  • Imperial Walkers
  • Cotton Pickers
  • Monkey Humpers
  • Dying Cockroaches
  • Merkins

Pledge

Mosey down by the gate to the crosswalk for a quick round of Dora

  1. 100 Freddie Mercs
  2. 200 Bobby Hurleys
  3. 300 Flutter Kicks

Mosey back to the track for our next round

Dirt led a “Rack ’em and stack ’em” workout at the Storm a while back and Watts Up did the same with his “Compounding Interest” workout at the Sandlot.  Mosey, do an exercise, Mosey back, add it on top of what you’ve already done.  Rinse.  Repeat.  I wanted to do the same, but let the PAX roll at their own pace, so I explained the whole thing at once, which long story short led to some mumble chatter about the “incomplete other side” and a description of the “Two Corners Thing” and, well, yeah.  That’s about as well as I described it.  Did I mention I’m an idiot?  Anyways, in spite of the best efforts of YHC, the PAX picked up on what we were doing pretty quickly.  It went something like this:

Round 1:

  • 10x Wide Arm Merkins
  • 15x Mountain Climbers
  • 20x Diamond Merkins

At the end of the round, the first 2 finished ran to a very strategically placed soccer ball and waited for the 6.

With perfectly good soccer goals on the track at The Ricky Bobby, it’d be a shame if they were never used, so I figured we could throw a game of chance into the mix.  The 2 fastest PAX in Round 1 would get a chance to take a shot at the soccer goal with burpees on the line.  If he made it, 5 burpees for the rest of the group.  If he missed, 10 burpees for himself.  Our two strongest in Round 1 were Roscoe and Tesla.  Roscoe buried his shot into the net with extreme force.  Tesla did not.  Burpees were done and we moved on.

Intermission:

Between Rounds 1 and 2, we partnered up and did some lune walks and some squats.  Partner 1 lunge walked about 3/4 of the way across the field and back.  Partner 2 did squats til his partner came back.  Switch.

Round 2:

More Two Corners action, this time:

  • 10x Plank Jacks
  • 15x Mike Tysons
  • 20x Shoulder Taps

And soccer balls placed closer to midfield.  Our two strongest this round were Nutria and Breaker Breaker.  This time, if one of the two scored the goal, nobody did burpees.  If they both missed, it would be 5 burpees.  I could have said 100 and it wouldn’t have mattered.  Nutria stepped up like he’s done this 100x before and just buried the ball in the net.  Off his foot it was just a thing of beauty.  After a shot so glorious, who cared about the next one?  (Breaker Breaker missed.)

Back to the flag for 2 minutes of LBCs.

I got my F3 name over 5 years ago, but this was my first time in the center of the Circle.  There’s a list of HIMs too long to name that have pushed me and showed me how to be a rock pusher.  Quick shout out to Woody for the EH to “Martha’s House” all those years ago and Sargento for the help with this VQ.  The more I learn, the more I realize how much I still have to learn, and I’m honored to get out in the gloom with the HIMs of F3 Gastonia and just keep getting better.

It was good to see Tricycle in the gloom at The Ricky Bobby after his first dose of buttermilk.

Sharpen Up November Challenge

Most men in life are in the middle of the bell curve  unless we choose to be be better than that.  If you believe you are one of those guys in the middle, then this is especially for you.    I am talking to the guys that post a couple days  a week and call it good.  The guys who are passively involved in one or two F’s.  The one’s who don’t avail themselves to all the items on the F3 Menu.  The ones who won’t do a CSAUP or Q a workout regularly.  The ones who don’t lives their lives intentionally and “oversleep” instead of making a decision to wake up and get after it.  This challenge is to push that bell curve to the right.

I have heard some clamoring among the Gashouse PAX for a challenge along the lines of the 40 day challenge so here it is.

No excuses!

VISION:  In November you are going to challenge yourself to a few required physical tasks as well as maintaining standards to increase your acceleration.

This challenge can be modified based on your fitness level but make sure you make it happen.

ARTICULATION:

1st F Requirements:

100 Miles combined run/ruck miles for the month to include:

-At least one ten-mile run and…

-At least one 12-mile ruck

-Or…one combined run/ruck of 15 miles

One Murph workout

Combined total of at least 25 workouts (30 minutes minimum, CSAUP’s count as 1)

Hydrate and take in protein after each workout.

Dietary Guidelines:

No Soda

No Fast Food

No sweets

No chips

More water

More salads, vegetables, and lean meats

No alcohol* (except at Bottom’s Up, F3 Gastonia’s only standing 2nd F event.  Limit yourself to two drinks (Moderation in all things, including moderation))

Cheat meals must be EARNED!   (with the exception of Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is a cheat day)

Seven workouts in a week earns you a cheat meal.

Going to Q-Source on Sunday morning earns a cheat meal.

If you have never been to a Q-Source session and go to your first one, you get an additional Cheat meal.

Persuasion:  Don’t be weak.  If you aren’t strong, you’re wrong.  That is it.  Make a shared Google Doc with your Shieldlock to track your mileage.  Journal your posts using Notes on your phone or some other method.  Post on Slack to update on your progress #accountability

YHC encourages Site-Q’s to schedule a long run or Ruck or Murph sometime during the month.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.  Otherwise, commit now to the challenge and quit making excuses.  Covid 2020 has been a real challenge  but we can continue to improve.  Prepare for this challenge now so you are ready.    The challenge begins with a ten miler at the Coconut Horse on November 1st, followed by Q-Source.  I am sure my friends in NOGA will make a similar option available.

EXHORTATION:  Quit being soft,

Roscoe

TRB – 10/14/20

Pledge

No FNG’s – Typical disclaimer

Seal Jacks IC x 23

Hillbilly Walkers IC x 17

Abe Vigoda’s IC x 10

About this time we saw someone roll into the parking lot.  I called some LBC’s to wait and see if it’s someone walk the track or  join us.  I saw Flintstone coming up so we gave him a Monkey Humper Salute as he approached.

Mosey to the back of the school where there are 15 stations set up.  Each PAX picks a station and AMRAP’s the exercise while one PAX Bear Crawls up the stairs and around the side walk back to the parking lot.  Once complete, that PAX takes his position at the end of the line and everyone shifts one spot to the right.  Rinse and repeat until a timer goes off at which time we Jail Break to the cross walk by Stowe Rd., then Mosey back and resume where we left off.  The AMRAP stations were:

Bear Crawl

Pretzel Crunch Right

Pretzel Crunch Left

Reverse Crunch

Slow Flutter Kick

LBC

Diamond Merkin

Wide Arm Merkin

Ranger Merkin

Shoulder Tap

Mike Tyson

Bonnie Blair (Jump Lunge)

Tiger Squat

Jump Squat

Monkey Humpers

Mosey to the front of the school.

No Dirt workout is complete without some calf raises so we did 10 Calf Raises IC on the curb.

Time

Announcements:

Convergence at 7:00 AM at Martha Rivers Park.  EC meets at Snowball’s for running or Rucking.

Prayer Request:

Watts Up son

Tiger

Sargento’s M

Orange Man’s family

SA’s daughter

Sorry if I forgot someone

It was a pleasure to led you this morning.

Dirt

The Queen of Spades = Monkey Humpers

What an absolutely beautiful morning.  Temperature was approximately 52 degrees.  Some good chatter before we started.  We clocked in on time at 05:30.  Disclaimer followed by a short warmup of 15 Toy Soldiers.

Mosey to the side of the school and partner up.  Exercise called was Dora 1-2-3-4-5

100 Squats
200 Carolina Dry Docks
300 Australian Mountain Climbers
400 Calf raises
500 LBCs

That went much quicker than YHC expected.

Slow mosey back to the flag and circle up. YHC brought the official workout cards and passed them out. We worked on this until 06:14 and we closed with the pledge and one burpee OYO

TIME!

Announcements: Brew Ruck on 10/14 – get with Freight for details
Convergence on 10/31.  Get with Broke for details

Prayer requests: Sister Act and his family, Orangeman’s M and her Uncle
Sargento’s M and their friend.
Each other

Circle of Man: YHC closed us in prayer.

I appreciate Sargento letting me Q this AO. A lot of Rock Pushers here.  It was also nice sharing the Gloom with some men I had never met.  I’m guilty of this, but get out and post at other locations.  When we stay with our own ‘home’ AO, we are robbing ourselves of meeting different PAX.

Rocking the Rock

The fall feeling weather is in the air and makes it more comfortable for pushing the rock. The HIMs were out again at TRB and start time is now!

Warm up:

Goof Balls IC

Abe Vigoda (apparently fast, then slow, then fast)

Mosey to the back of the school. Surprise, surprise! YHC brought a bag full of cards and a speaker. Joy!

Deck of Death, always a crowd pleaser.

Spades – Lunges

Diamonds – Burpees

Clubs – American Hammers

Hearts – Merkins

There were two aces in the deck and we ran to the road and back for each one. As is often the scenario, most of the spades and clubs were drawn at the beginning and overloaded the finishing rounds with burpees and merkins. That’s ok, we got swole. YHC loves the DoD.  The lucky PAX in attendance were super excited to get to hear the latest musical compilation, this version was loud and hard. Perfect for pushing the rock to.

Mosey to the front, get 5 burpees in for the train that passed earlier and we’re done.

Announcements: Young Life golf tournament Monday October 5th

Prayer requests: Orangeman’s daugther, Adam Kincaid, Sargento’s M’s knee replacement, Stephanie McMahan, Tiger’s ex’s surgery, Nutria starts new job Monday, George Miller passing, Sherry McKenzie passing

Honor to The Ricky Bobby!

54 degrees and a great morning for my VQ at TRB! As YHC got ready to begin the disclaimer and pledge,  up out of the gloom walked none other than the Bionic-man himself: Cinderella. I already knew it was going to be a good morning to have a great morning.

I gave the disclaimer (I Q from where I want to, Sargento) we did the pledge, we got to work.

25x SSH IC

25x Goofballs IC (honor to the goofball himself, TRB site Q)

5 Burpees OYO.

I couldn’t remember if we had ever run a Dora here before, but I’m a big fan of those so we did the thang.

100 Hand release Merkins

200 IBC (sizzle to honor Buckeye)

300 Sumo Squats (honor to my Japanese heritage)

Run around the bus lot and grassy area in front of the school.

The men crushed it, with only a little complaining about the Sumos, and we headed off to the side of the school for the next bit of greatness.

Triple Nickels from the last light post, back to the crosswalk.

Light post: Crunchy Frogs

Crosswalk: Mike Tysons

After planking for the 6, we lined up along the curb for the next bit of greatness.

The PAX went down the line calling an exercise that the rest of the group would do, while he ran down to the playground and back. While Roscoe started us off with a groan worthy set of 8 count body builders, the rest was a good challenge for all. In some order we did:

  • 8 count body builders
  • Flutter Kicks
  • Diamond Merkins
  • Rosalitas
  • Calf Raises (honor to Dirt!)
  • Monkey Humpers (honor to Tesla!)
  • Dying Cockroaches
  • Freddy Mercury’s
  • Hillbilly Walkers
  • Rocky Balboas
  • Big Boys
  • One other exercise that YHC can’t remember, cause that’s a lot…so if I missed yours leave a comment.

Then we mosey’d back to the flag, and finished with a little stretching.
