Blessed at Midoriyama

Very warm day at the greatest afternoon AO around and 10 strong Pax came out to evidently what was expected to be an easy workout from the old man Q. Let’s see what we can do to change that notion!

Warmup
SSH, Abe Vigodas, Right over Left, Left over Right, Moroccan Night Clubs, Low Slow Squats.

Pledge

Mosey toward dog park hill stopping at each light pole for 3 Burpees for about 10 light poles stopping to wait on the six at each pole. Burpees? Yes Burpees. I hate them but probably need a few so I called them.

At dog park hill, partner up for Dora 123. Partner 1 runs the hill while partner 2 begins:
100 perfect form merkins (Hand release Merkins with shoulder taps, hate these too)
200 flutter kicks (count right leg)
300 LBC’s. Several “dogs” in the dog park seemed to be paying attention to the guy with perfect hair.
This was tougher than expected but luckily I had Defib as a partner and he did more than his fair share of the reps. These dudes worked that hill! Several finished by bringing in the six for a nice group effort! At this point Sister Act’s name was brought up in a negative light but I shut that down and will not hear of this during my Q!

Mosey to the lower parking lot for Route 66 with 1 CDD, bear crawl to the next space, 2 CDD’s and continue through 11 spaces. Some comments about CDD form but I am not sure who it was directed toward. Freight, Slaw, Defib and Wirenut made this look easy but it was not!

Mosey to the parking lot back near the flag for one last thang.
Elevens with 10 Big Boys on one side and 1 American Hammer on the other. We almost completed before time.

During the workout I read a few quotes about blessings from various people as I have been feeling very blessed in many ways lately. I think most of us are so very blessed in many ways and it is good to have gratitude for those blessings. Here are the quotes.

“When I started counting my blessings, my whole life turned around.” – Willie Nelson

“Gratitude lifts our eyes off the things we lack so we might see the blessings we possess.” – Max Lucado (I can recommend his books as they are easy reads and very practical).

“When we lose one blessing, another is often most unexpectedly given in its place.” – C.S. Lewis (His books are a bit more difficult but I have enjoyed the ones I have read).

“Those blessings are sweetest that are won with prayer and worn with thanks.” – Thomas Goodwin

“Don’t just count your blessings. Be the blessing other people count on.” – Anonymous

I relayed the story of a friend who passed away last week who was always a blessing to others. His name was Bud Jonas and I have known him over 40 years. His visitation was full of laughter and funny stories and the church was over capacity with people standing. The pastor even said funerals like this are easy because his life speaks for itself. We should all be striving to live so that our life is a blessing to others.

8 total at Midoriyama on Tuesday. Pallbearer wasn’t there. What’s up with that?

Warmup:

Sealjacks, stretches, Don Q’s, merkins

Grab a block and head to the light pole at the road.

The Thang:

We started at the pole doing reps of an exercise then rifle carried to the next pole. We continued that for 7 poles or to the end of the road. Reps and exercises listed below.

pole 1-5 blockees

pole 2-10 thrusters

pole 3-15 swings

pole 4-20 standing chest presses. Mayor cheated himself due to a disagreement of the name. Hate to see it!

pole 5-25 alpos

pole 6-30 rows

pole 7-35 curls

After Slaw finally decided to join us(sandbagging) we moseyed over to the small field and partnered up. Below is what we did each pax switching to make a round

-P1 runs across the field and back then planks, P2 farmer carries the blocks over and back

-P1 does sealjacks, P2 farmer carries one block over and back

-P1 does mtn climbers, P2 farmer carries one block over and back

-P1 does 5 burpees, runs over and planks, P2 does murder bunnies across

Back on the road starting at the 7th light pole P1 runs to the next pole and back while P2 farmer carries the blocks. Switch and keep doing this until we get back to the 1st pole.

After we put up the blocks we did a round of iron hulks, howling monkeys and ring of fire I think? I was just making stuff up at this point to finish out the day.

YHC read John 13:12-18 which is Jesus talking about servant leadership just after he has washed the disciples feet. Jesus is my standard and if he can wash feet why am I not serving others more? What are you doing to serve?

Arms and Abs

The temps are starting to get a little cooler for the premier afternoon AO of Gashouse, but it’s still pretty  brutal. Since there is a CSAUP this weekend YHC decided to stay away from leg work and focus on the soccer arms and love handles. Sister Act once again dodged my Q (I guess my workouts are too JV for a rock pusher like him), but 7 PAX were standing around looking for something to do when the time hit. Let’s give them what they want.

Quick warmup, then grab a block and head to the parking lot beside the turd shack.

20 curls, 20 OH Press, 20 tricep extensions

Run across the lot

20 Big Boys (some of us waited a couple rounds too long to move to the grass!!!)

Run back to start

x5 rounds

Partner up

Partner 1 rifle carries while Partner 2 does 2 burpees then runs to catch up and switch

2 laps around the parking lot

20 flutter kicks w/coupon, 20 hammers w/coupon, 20 windshield wipers (hammers with a block are brutal!!!)

Run across the lot

20 Merkins

Run back to start

x5 rounds

Put the blocks up and still a couple of minutes left. Finished up with 10 hip slappers and 1 min. wall sit.

Slaw took us out.

I’m Broke

Kotter at Midoriyama

I haven’t Q’d in a long while so Wojo needed a stand-in, I volunteered and developed the weinke and knew a few may be missing but 8 strong showed up for the old man Q. Slaw is on the IR but still brings us water and a flag and emotional support! Freight was likely celebrating his forty-somethingth birthday. Warm, muggy day at Midoriyama and I see a truck pull in I don’t recognize. Who gets out of this truck but the one and only ALLEN TATE! Yes, that Allen Tate! I haven’t seen him in a long while and he looks ready to werk! Always good to have a Kotter back in the fold. Let’s get to it.

Warmup – SSH, Don Q’s, Couple of Stretches since this was supposed to be a Wojo Q (no fire hydrants though), Imperial Walkers, Low Slow Squats, 5 burpees OYO.

Pledge

Mosey to small soccer field
Corner 1 – 10 perfect form (PF) merkins, (hand release w/shoulder taps at top)
Corner 2 – 20 American Hammers (count right side as one), repeat 10 PF merkins
Corner 3 – 30 Imperial Walkers (count ride side as one), 20 hammers, 10 PF Merkins
Corner 4 – 40 Flutter Kicks (count right side as one), 30 Imperial Walkers, 20 hammers, 10 PF Merkins
Corner 3 – 30 Imperial Walkers (count ride side as one), 20 hammers, 10 PF Merkins
Corner 2 – 20 American Hammers (count right side as one), repeat 10 PF merkins
Corner 1 – 10 PF Merkins.

Mosey around the soccer field sidewalk to Dog Park Hill.
Triple Nickel: 5 LBC’s at bottom and 5 Low Slow Squats at top 5 times.

Mosey over to the soccer field line for some sprints/suicides.

Sprint about 50 feet to a line and sprint back when I say go. We did this 7 times. Broke left early once but Tonka was way ahead on most of these. Old geezer Oompa got pretty swift on at least one of these. After each sprint while we were catching our breath I would read a quote about kindness. Kindness is a great attribute to have especially when dealing with our families. Listen to each quote and think about where you are right now on a kindness scale and how you can improve.
1. Love is patient and kind. 1 Cor. 13:4
2. Less is more unless it’s kindness, sleep or toilet paper.
3. Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you. Ephesians 4:32
4. Kindness goes a long ways sometimes when it maybe should have stayed at home.
5. To err on the side of kindness is seldom an error.
6. Kindness is more than wisdom, and the recognition of this is the beginning of wisdom.
7. “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Luke 23:34 The ultimate in kindness shown to us all!

Mosey back to the flag.

4 sided triangle

11 pax posted at Midoriyama on Tuesday. The Italian bicyclist ran, grandma walked, and the rest of the pax followed me because I definitely knew where I was going.

Warmup:

Some stuff like SSH, merkins, and squats.

The Thang:

It’s almost running season for me again and honestly I’m looking forward to it. I’ve kind of missed it. Somebody help me this doesn’t sound right! I’ve grown to welcome discomfort overtime. I like the feeling of pushing hard. Running provides that for sure. Anyway I decided to bump the running up a little since we’ve been doing shorter distance running in the heat. Also from time to time I like to throw in running with a brick or two just to make the suck a little worse. So we only had enough for 1 a piece but that sucks enough. Down the road we went. At the picnic shelter we stopped for some step ups and dips. Down the trail at the lake we bear crawled the first bridge. We stopped for some seal jacks ic. Bear crawled the next bridge. Off the trail onto the powerline. We stopped for some Hillbillies and squats. Mosey and stop for some Imperial Walkers and Lil Gumbys. Mosey to what looks like  the first intersection of a triangle area on Google maps to do 5 brickees. Mosey to the next intersection for 5 more. Now it’s much more overgrown than it appears on Google so I began to question which way to go. I should have went with my gut but went with my 2nd guess and stayed on the power line looking for the next intersection. As you may guess that was wrong. Now we weren’t ever lost because I knew where it would take us too but we did start to run low on time so I made the call to turn around and hit the trail to cut through to the dam road. At this point the storm was rolling in and the woods were getting pretty dark. We stopped a few more times along the way for some punches holding the brick ic so the group could stay together. We ended up about 5 minutes late which was just enough time for it to start raining.

10 pax posted at Midoriyama for a rare PM visit.  It went like this…

Warm-Up

Tha Thang:

8-Burpees

24- Squats

20- Merkins

13- BB Sit-ups

After each round run across the soccer field and start again….9 rounds of this (The M and my 9 year wedding anniversary was on 8/24)

With time to spare, head back to the flag for some 13’s…Mike Tyson’s and LBC’s

Time!!

Strong work by all that posted!! Thanks to the site Q for the opportunity to lead!!

Thanks again for the opportunity and until next time, the Gatekeeper is OOOOUUUUUTTTTT!!

Quality Group

6 Pax posted at Midoriyama on a sunny but somewhat dryer Thursday. I realized about half way there that I left my weinke at home. It was to be a continuation of something we didn’t finish from my last Q. We gave it  a try anyway. Somethings I remembered and some things I just made up on the fly. We did try what one nation Pax called the perfect merkin. It eliminated the short pump so many of you are used too. Hand release at the bottom and shoulder taps at the top. Slaw said it eliminates the neckie too.

So for the group there, it was full of seniority. All with years of F3 under their belt. 3 past nantans, 3 family members(we got real close to hearing about relations with a couple of twin’s sister). I hate it for them. I even cringe a little when it happens but it’s also pretty funny. It’s like seeing something gross on tv that makes you gag a little but you can’t stop watching it. It’s been great having Ass Pump back out some. He’s a fun guy to hang out with. Mainly because he’s willing to do most anything. Like try to get back into skateboarding in his mid 40’s because his preacher does it. Yup you read that right. His preacher is the same age by the way. If you see him ask to see the video footage of him skating(or not so much) into his garage. Leppard was back from his trip to Denver. He went out for his new job to a mattress convention. It sounds like the mattress business is doing pretty good! FYI there is a $9,000 mattress coming out with a pocket in it that will blow you mind! Slaw kept accusing him of getting into the weed while he was out there. He denied it but sang Rocky Mtn High the entire workout. As his partner it would explain his delay in responses like walking back to me while I held the block. He was moving super slow but kept yelling I’m going as fast as I can! The most interesting part about all of that is he just went to Denver, NC.

Six Feet Under

There’s nothing quite like working out at Midoriyama in August, it’s hot and humid with very little shade. Eight PAX made it out and put in work despite the rough conditions.

No need for a warmup so let’s get going. My intention was to do some easy running with stops along the way for quick reps of various exercises to get the heart rate up. Major Q fail!!! The heart rate went up right off the bat and never came down. Got in about 2 miles total with stops for merkins, lbc’s, squats, ssh and burpee’s. Also threw in some lunge walks, big boys and Mike Tyson’s just to mix it up. Solid work by all the PAX!

NMM/COT

YHC took a few minutes at the end to discuss how Freight is a great example of what a leader should be. He’s candid, he’s dedicated, he challenges himself and others, he will hold you accountable and expects you to do the same for him and when he sets his mind to do something he gets it done. All of these traits are things we discuss at QSource and if you aren’t attending these sessions you’re missing out.

Warmup:

Blah blah it’s 90+ deg

The Thang:

Partner up and one gets a block. Meet in the parking lot. One partner will do an exercise with the block while the other runs to the far side to do 5 reps of another exercise. Switch and rinse and repeat for 3 rounds then I’ll give you another set of exercises. Some of these come from my sandbag workouts I do so we just subbed in the block.

Avalanche/Starburst

Block situp/Tiger squat

Thruster/Rocky Balboa ic

Shoulder to shoulder/lunge

Leg levers/ SSH

Bear hug squat/diamond merkin

High pulls/corkscrew ic
