Somebody’s Fuming but not Smoking

Quick immediate disclaimer, no fng’s.  Somebody’s pulling in last moment and trying to calculate the perfect parking spot.  But Watts Up will have nothing to do with this, time to roll if we’re going.  So, let’s go.

First stop is short one.  Out to Main St.  Find a partner.

Booyah Merkin Runs

Stop light to stop light, alternating routes.  Meet back with partner and count 10 Booyah merkins, working your way down.  We did this for a little bit.

Mosey to the parking garage.

Modified 4 corners on six levels?  All OYO….but we ran as a group

Ground Floor:  10 merkins

1st level:  Repeat and 20 squats

2nd level:  Repeats and 30 LBC’s

3rd level:  Repeatss and 40 flutters

4th level:  Repeatss only

5th level:  No repeatss, just 50 SSH

Mosey back down using the “You take the High Road and I’ll take the Low Road” approach.  Group 1 (which ironically did not include me) run back down and go to the stairs.  Group 2 will take the stairs and joyfully cheer you on.  Rinse and repeat only Group 2 now runs.  Carry this down to the bottom level.

Some aggressive competition going (well basically everybody was trying to catch Bob the Builder) so we kept it up.

Group Planks/Squats:

Group 1, A, whatever your called runs up one level and back down the stairs.  Group 2 or B or whatever we are holds plank.

Rinse and repeat using Squat or Al Gore position.

Rinse and repeat using/holding feet in 6″ off ground position.  Also ironic that Linus tried to switch groups avoiding the last run.  This was the first or 2nd or maybe 3rd Q fail of the morning.

We are already down to about less than 20 minutes left.

Take a mosey to the murky hill area right below the Masonic Temple (which I mis-pronounced so says Watts Up).  I slid my Weinke under a Bic lighter to prevent my Whoopee Resistant plastic covered Weinke from blowing away.  By the way, that area is way less murky in the daylight but the hill is a bit intimidating.  Partner up.

Merkin Bear Crawls:

Partner 1 does 10 merkins and can get up and run to catch partner 2 who is bear crawling.  All the way to the stoplight.  I think Slaw and company made it back to the pavilion and came back to help finish our rep.

Round 2:  Dips (best you can on a flat surface) and crab walk half the distance.  Somewhere in the process the HIM’s retrieved my weinke including the Bic lighter used to hold it in place.  I think as I type this there is somebody trying to light up fuming about their missing flame.  Doubt their internal anger is enough to light their stick, maybe an incentive to quit smoking?  But I doubt it.

Back across Franklin.  We’ve got about 3.5 minutes to spare.  Continue our last round with squats and lunges.  Roll back to the pavilion at exactly 6:15.

Ready position move

13 PAX for a hot and humid workout at Midoriyama on Thursday. This is what happened.

Warmup:

Low Slow Squats ic with hands locked reaching overhead

Flutter Kicks ic

Mosey to the hill at the softball field

Tha Thang:

Joe Hendricks and do 5 squats with your hands locked overhead at the top of the hill

Back at the bottom we did flutter kicks ic once everyone was in ready position. Unfortunately this group thinks ready position means feet on the ground so I had to keep calling ready position move over and over again while the rest of us held our feet up. This would continue throughout the workout. We did this grouping a few more times before moving on.

Over at the steps we did 10 calf raises per step. While you wait to either get on the steps or everyone else to finish you do lunges. These instructions apparently didn’t apply to a few PAX who chose to just stand around and talk. Let’s Mosey

About halfway up the road we stopped for some more squats and flutters.

At the end parking lot we partnered up. 11’s-burpees and booyah merkins. Do the burpees together the one PAX runs around the island one way while the runs the opposite to meet at the other end to do the merkins. After the merkins run back to the start in opposite direction again. This was fun! Once complete or almost, sorry to those that were cut short, we did some more squats and flutters then we headed back to the hill.

At the hill we did some NUR with squats at the top and more flutters ic at the bottom. 3 rounds I believe.

Over to the parking lot where we did bunny hops across and flutters on the other side. Just a few rounds and it was time to head back to the flag.

COT:

Announcements-Advisory meeting Sunday 4:00pm at Lineberger park. Park in the parking lot where you get on the green way.  Service project items are nail clippers and chapstick.

Prayer Request-Turtleman, PAX and families traveling for vacation, Rudolph’s family, Buckeye’s friend

Naked Moleskin:

Good group out there today. Keep pushing! I know it’s hot and humid but you have more in the tank than you may realize. That’s one of the things I like about Goruck or Growrucks events. At the end of it you realize you just did 12-15 hours of rock pushing. If you can do that then what is a 45 minute or 1 hour workout? Speaking of that is why we did some many of the overhead squats and flutters. I realized a while back I struggle to hold weight overhead and squat. Guess what I had to do and hold in position at Growruck? Yup, so I decided I would improve on that for next time. Also it seems as though when you are paying the consequence of failure during these events they like to use flutter kicks so I figured I better get good at those as well. Always be training  and train past game!

SURPRISE Q AT FOLSOM

Round Up was on the schedule to Q but had concrete to get ready for early this morning because of the rain. He reached out and ask if I could take it, and I could. So I started thinking what would we could do that would be Round Up worthy.

Gather for coupons as rest of todays work crew hits the time clock a few minutes late ( where’s the foreman?)

20 curls then 20 overhead press followed by 10 each
Ask about timing to Waffle House . Told you have to get after it to make it … I’ve got a plan for that!
Ask next question ….a or b ? El Toro with the rapid response of A ( I think he also said “ Obviously !”) others agree
A would be the smaller coupon …. B was for “ball” …. As in slamball 20 lbs …. Wise group as smaller coupon approx 12 lbs and easier to grip…. One to hold and transport until we stop and perform short routine of 10 squats and 10 merkins and give off to another … whenever carrying transport however you wish and exempt from activities other than mosey if a change up is needed ( none Were) we would modify. However, should you place coupon down … all would suffer a 5 burpee penalty! None used!

made it down and back, set timer for 30 seconds of merkins and finished up strong!!

Whoopee was not her much to my chagrin as I added weights to my vest that he said last time was empty ( had about 24 pounds then …. Now was 30 )

of note: Hermey has his hands insured by Lloyd’s of London for $12,000 a digit so we made sure he was wearing gloves and Les Nessman spoke of a curious bacon smell that may have been an aftershave!

also, I got home only to realize that in all the time as Site Q of Labyrinth I’ve never failed in collecting the flag ………. Until today.

well, I know what I’ll be doing later ……. 50 penalty burpees  ….. ouch

A Few Good Men

When YHC pulled up to the The Ricky Bobby for a humid buttermilk beatdown lead only Nutri was in the lot! This from a site that usually draws 10-12 regulars. Hmmm. In rolled Bubba Sparks. Let’s get this thing started. Went like this starting at midfield:

COP:

SSH X 20

Cotton Pickers X 20

Grapevine stretches

Mtn. Climbers X 20

Merkins X 10

Easy lap

Head to the endline for some suicides

Start 5X

run to the “25” 10X and back to start

run to midfield 15X and back.

Round 1- HR merkins 5, 10 ,15

Round 2 – Big boy situps 5, 10, 15

Round 3 – CDDs 5, 10 ,15

Round 4 – Jump Squats 5, 10, 15

Easy lap

On the end line again for a little basketball drill I learned from Jim Laranaga in June of 1971 at Davidson College when he was an assistant to Terry Holland, the basic step-slide in the defensive stance. Coach Laranaga was @ 26 at the time. Maybe 27. Very competitive dude. Still have that baskeball camp photo somewhere.

Round 1 – step slide per Q, drop and do 1 burpee. Repeat thee times. Run back to the endline after each.

Round 2 – same as above 3X total repeats with 5 merkins on the down call.

Round 3 – same as above , change out merkins for werkins.

Over to the bleachers for 11s.

Bleachers – 10 dips.

Mosey half way across the field, American hammers.

Finish and do another lap.

Over to the COT area for Mary and finish.

NMM

Skeleton crew today but you only need a few good men to accomplish anything. All put in the work, all got better. At the end of the day that’s what it’s about. I left knowing I had accompished something today and that is a pretty solid bottom line.

Prayers up for Turtleman and others. Blood drive next week. Tesla is in. Are you? Why wouldn’t you be?!

Enjoyed the opportunity to lead today.

Prison Break

13 of us push stones this morning and got to fellowship . A lot guys got in some EC and Westside got his first 10k awesome job man! One thing I have noticed lately is a lot of men putting in the mileage. Which will lead to them all doing relay races when they come up NO EXCUSES! I say it that way hoping y’all will push me to another relay race when the time comes and not letting me make some excuse. There is no doubt that we have a lot of guys pushing the rock! Awesome job to everyone especially those who “hated” running. Ball joint, Westside are two that come to mind that have really stepped it up lately. Looking forward to races and relays that are coming up for us all to join.

Blood, Blocks & Bear Crawls at The Bunker

10 strong at the region’s newest AO.  Here’s what I remember:

Breaker Breaker left with a group of bootcampers leaving us to settle in and throw down in The Bunker.  YHC reached out for an assist from HIPAA, as no Bunker beatdown is complete without music to work to, and YHC hasn’t invested time in a playlist or money in a bluetooth speaker.

The Thang:

To the Footmobile for coupons with a variety of bricks and blocks available.  Back to the circle for an extra round:

  • 10 x Hillbilly Walkers (IC)
  • Standing Toe Touch Stretch
  • Seated R/L Core Twist Stretch & Flapjack
  • 10 x Heels to Heaven (IC)
  • 10 x Reverse Table Ups (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)

Next, we launched into the beginning of our circuit.  With our coupons ready at the concrete barriers we started with:

1 minute of each:

  • One-legged Glute Bridge & Flapjack
  • Cinder block Overhead Press
  • Bulgarian Split Squats L & R
  • Lift cinder block on concrete barrier, Climb up and over, Take cinder block off wall, Repeato

Carry block to cone for:

  • Crab walk to wall, pushing cinder block with feet

Once at the wall, we played a little 21, Bunker-style.  Partner up.  One partner performs a hold while the other performs an exercise.  Increase counts from 1-10, so 1 -1, 2-2, 3-3, 4-4… 10-10.  At 10-10, you and your partner have “20” and need to make a basket to get “21” and be finished.  Otherwise, it’s back to 8-8, 9-9, 10-10 before getting another shot.  After getting to 10-10, each partner had 3 shots at the basket.  Once teams were finished with theirs, they could jump in and help the other teams, both with the exercises and additional shots at the basket.

Exercises/Holds were:

  • Round 1: Merkin/Plank
  • Round 2: Aquaman/Superman

Each round, there was 1 team who didn’t make the basket, so we split up the reps among us and had more than enough opportunities to make the next shots.  After 21, we needed to get back to the start, so we did:

  • Bear Crawl pull throughs with cinder block

Back at the start, we had Storytime.  All PAX held the “M” position (think starting position of a Crunchy Frog) while one PAX talked about how they got to F3 and what it meant to them.  Barney accused YHC of kidnapping him, which was only partially true.  HIPAA mentioned being EH’d by his cardiologist, and doing any number of stupid things including running a half marathon, and the importance of the 2nd F and getting to know each other.  Gavel took round 2, talking about his upcoming 1 year anniversary and being a part of a relay team.

Storytime over and back at the barriers, we got to repeat the full circuit again, for a total of 2 full rounds.

I wish I could say no PAX or coupons were harmed in the making of this beatdown, but sadly, it was not true.  Slim Shady lost half of his cinder block on the first round, and the rest crumbled on the second.  Pilgrim’s Progress had to get another after his cinder block crumbled.  Barney put his blood into the workout, along with the sweat and tears as he scraped his leg going up and over the concrete barriers.  Add in the skid marks left by the coupons on the crab walks and the pull throughs and needless to say, there was plenty of evidence of work done on this day at The Bunker.

After the 2nd round, we started our trek back to the Yank, lunge walking the entire way, stopping at the top of the hill for

  • 20 x Toe Touches (IC)

and at the Old Stone parking lot for

  • 20 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)

Oblivious was out in front, with YHC behind and a couple long-legged PAX, Anchorman & Nutria, cruising along with the lunges, mentioning that they were always thankful for the times that their God-given bodies were made for the work they were doing.

With Anchorman back in town, YHC asked if he’d take us home leading the last exercises once we returned to the Yank.  He obliged with

  • 20 x American Hammers (IC)
  • 20 x Nolan Ryans L (IC)
  • 20 x Nolan Ryans R (IC)

Wrapping up with

  • 9 x Monkey Humpers (IC)

for the returning bootcampers.

Moleskin:

It’s starting to hit me how much I missed being an athlete as a SadClown.  I’m starting to feel more comfortable using that label, even as I’m right now as old as I’ve ever been.  At 38, I’m likely as fast or faster, and definitely stronger, than I’ve ever been.  But just being able to have different gears running, do push-ups without shaking, open a dang jar that’s stuck; it’s a good feeling.

Putting together the Weinke for a low-impact workout was much more challenging than I expected.  It’s not easy to put something out there challenging yet still attainable for all PAX.  Even just deciding on what coupons to use, if any at all, was tough.  For someone like me, who tends to overthink everything anyways, there were a lot of new things to think about and questions I’d not had to answer before.  I liked the challenge and look forward to the next one.

Don’t think that low-impact workouts are JUST for those who don’t want to run.  Anyone who wants to get stronger will benefit from these workouts.  Ditch the soccer arms, be well rounded, and work some gear or ruck training into your schedule.

I appreciate the support from the PAX today.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead.
