Thursday Night Football

12 Pax showed up at warming Midoriyama for the old man Q. Kinda warm and a little breezy and here we go.
Warmup: SSH x 10 IC, Cotton Pickers x 10 IC, Abe Vigoda x 10 IC, the allegedly patented Right over Left stretch x 5 and then the alledgedly un-patented Left over Right stretch x 5.
Pledge.
Mosey to Dog Park Hill for 22’s. 20 Merkins at the bottom, mosey up the hill for 2 LBC’s, mosey down the hill. 18 merkins, 4 LBC’s and so on until 2 Merkins and 20 LBC’s. The bat flippers crushed it as usual but everyone finished.
Since we are here and have a football. Let’s play frisbee rules football on half of the big soccer field. Plays were made. Touchdowns were scored. No reported injuries. The heat seemed to zap the energy level towards the end so back to the flag. Sister Act would have had at least three penalties if we had a referee! We didn’t keep score but I believe my team won by at least two touchdowns!

Announcements: Remember items for the Service project. Ruck event on May 22nd.

Prayer Requests: Big Pappy, Sister Act’s family, Gumby’s mom, Wojo’s sister, Law Enforcement in Watauga County, EZ Rider’s family friend, Tater Hole and son, Costner family.

Get a Grip!

You ever have one of those “themes” that keeps running through your head but you don’t know why…  enter Get a Grip!  For a week or better I was having thoughts of how so many things tend to grip us in life.  The pandemic, sickness, job woes, tragedy,  you name it, we hear them at the end of every workout during the COT.  So that got me thinking how could I tie my Q w/ grip.  I searched the NIV and found 11 references to the word grip in the bible.  Nearly all dealt with how someone was “gripped” or “locked” in fear over something.  I remembered having a bunch of small brick pavers that were the perfect size to “grip” during the workout so after a short warm up we all grabbed 2 blocks and got busy.  The day was also the first of May (5/1/21) so each exercise followed this pattern as well.  Remember, as I pointed out at the end of the workout, when something has a grip on you always remember that God has got an even tighter grip on us and will never let go!

GET a GRIP: (I wasn’t sure how to attach in this format)

  1. Get A Grip On Your Sleep
“You know you’re in love when you can’t fall asleep because
reality is finally better than your dreams.” — Dr. Seuss
  2. Get A Grip On Your Body
“Be careful about reading health books. Some fine day you’ll die of
    a misprint.” — Markus Herz
We’re obsessed with looking fit and tanned and having all the
latest gadgets, yet on most days, we sit more than we sleep. Don’t
overcomplicate health. It doesn’t always have to be 10,000
steps. Ten more than yesterday will do.
  3. Get A Grip On Your Mind
“I will not let anyone walk through my mind with their dirty feet.” —
    Mahatma Gandhi
  4. Get A Grip On Your Words
“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.”
    — Rudyard Kipling
Better thoughts lead to better words. What you say shapes who
you are. In fact, how you experience the world is in large part
defined by how you describe that experience.5. Get A Grip On Your Food
“Let thy food be thy medicine.” — Hippocrates
What comes out of your mouth can only be as good as what
you put in. We are what we eat, so let’s eat less of what we don’t
want to be. Drink water, wait minutes before you have seconds,
delay the dessert and when you’re 80% full, tune in. Do you really
    need more?
  5. Get A Grip On Your Finances
“If you want to change the fruits, you will first have to change the
    roots.” — T. Harv Eker
  6. Get A Grip On Your Job
“Transferring your passion to your job is far easier than finding a
job that happens to match your passion.” — Seth Godin
In Grit: The Power of Passion and Perseverance, Angela
Duckworth shares the story of the three bricklayers:
When asked, “What are you doing?” the first bricklayer replied:
“I’m laying bricks.” The second bricklayer answered: “I’m putting
up a wall.” The third bricklayer responded, with pride in his voice:
    “I’m building a cathedral.”
The biggest barriers between a job, a career and a calling are
made of perspective. No matter what you do, how you choose to
do it is up to you.8. Get A Grip On Your Attention
“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is
    all.” — Oscar Wilde
So look up from your phone, shut down that display, take in
your surroundings, make the most of today.
  7. Get A Grip On Your Possessions
“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but
when there is nothing left to take away.” — Antoine de SaintExupéry
  8. Get A Grip On Your Time
“Half our time is spent trying to find something to do with the time
we have rushed through life trying to save.” — Will Rogers
If it won’t matter a week, a month or a year from now, is it
    really worth doing?
  9. Get A Grip On Your Relationships
“No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” —
    Eleanor Roosevelt
The best thing you can do for the world and to anger your
enemies is to be nothing like them. There might indeed be toxic
people in your life, but they don’t come with an obligation to
engage with them.12. Get A Grip On Your Happiness
“For every minute you are angry you lose sixty seconds of
    happiness.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson
We confuse pleasure and happiness when in reality, it’s not
about glass half full vs. glass half empty, but about what you
choose to see when you look at the glass.
  10. Get A Grip On Your Life
“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done.
One is called Yesterday and the other is called Tomorrow.” —
    Dalai Lama
All of these are different variations of saying: one small step taken
today is better than a large step left to be taken tomorrow.
The world truly is small. We all live in the same place and it’s
called the present. All you have is today. The question that
    remains is:
Will you choose to make it matter?
    Come To Grips
I hope this makes you get to grips with how much of your grip you
can get back. You have a lot more control than you think.
“You have power over your mind — not outside events. Realize
this, and you will find strength.” — Marcus Aurelius

Last But Not Least

Folsom is a unique type of place. The HIMs are proud, and why shouldn’t they be? They rock! The AO is sprawling with lots of different things to do. When I requested the Q from Wichita he asked if there would be a playlist. Does he even know me? As I was walking up to the circle of HIM before the workout I heard some guys ask where my speaker was. This is what happened…

Disclaimer – I’m a pro, do what I say unless you want to modify, then do whatever you need to do.

Warmup – Goofballs, Don Quixotes and the patented Sargento Right over Left. Most of these guys hadn’t seen this one before so it was pretty funny.

Mosey, being sure to pick up the JBL on the way past my car. Begin Killer Playlist!!!

Route 66 – Do Merkins at each light. When it was apparent we wouldn’t get to the required 11 lights YHC Omaha’d to include trees and even large shrubs (We want a shrubbery!!! See the clip with the Knights who say Nigh from Monty Python and the Holy Grail, it’s hilarious) so we could get the number. Mission accomplished!

Pledge of Allegiance

Mosey to the horse track where the big steps are.

Triple Nickel – At the bottom do Derkins, lunge to the top and do WWI’s all x5.

Mosey back down to the start and go to the tennis courts.

4 Corner Escalator – In honor of my dad’s 72nd birthday today, we would use that number as the guide.

  • Corner 1 – 18 Merkins
  • Corner 2 – 18 Merkins & 36 Lunges (some guys tried to forget about the Merkins)
  • Corner 3- 18 Merkins, 36 Lunges and 54 Flutter Kicks count R leg only.
  • Corner 4 – 18 Merkins, 36 Lunges, 54 Flutter Kicks & 72 CDDs.

Mosey in reverse to retrieve the JBL then back to the corner we ended the exercises on. Do it all in reverse! This was a great way to finish the workout and made for a lot of pain.  Even swole ‘ole Wirenut said that for a spaghetti armed runner I sure do a lot of Merkins. I’ll take that as a compliment! Thanks for the opportunity to lead men!

dog show

I was back in Folsom this morning-great Ao, great guys, OUTSTANDING cofeeteeria (partly based on the food and partly based on the PAX. However, you will have a hard time finding a better breakfast casserole anywhere). Saw a lot of new faces and a few old ones this morning. We also had a couple FNGs. Driving in I noticed some extra vehicles and quickly realized there was another event going on. Years ago I might have wondered if the Folsom regulars had camped out due to excitement for another workout…..I soon found out there was a dog show going on this weekend. At your own risk you can insert your favorite joke about anyone’s particular M at this point.

We started with a little warmup-a few SSH, Squats, and Merkins then headed to the tennis courts. I did get to the disclaimer shortly after starting. Q fail right out of the gates. Oh well, I guess that is what I get for not Q’ing on a regular basis lately. Once we got on the tennis courts I explained the initial plan. I reminded the guys of the Greenwood PAX event each year called IronPax Challenge. I borrowed part of one of their workouts with a minor modification. I would count my reps and they would do AMRAP. I did 50 squats/20 BB situps + 20 Freddie Mercuries, 30 Merkins, 20 Bonnie Blairs, and 10 burpees. BTW, Bonnie Blairs don’t get any easier if you don’t do them on a regular basis. We took a lap around the courts then repeated that without the burpees. And in case you are wondering, the second round was not easy.

We moved on to the second part which included an Indian Run….actually a “Run Indian.” I don’t think this is a real thing so don’t bother looking it up. I made it up last night and overall I think it worked pretty well. On Run Indian, the idea is similar to Indian Run except the first guy in the line drops off, does 3 burpees, yells “GO!!!! for the next first guy to drop off and do 3 burpees….. After completing the burpees, the idea is to get back into line moseying along. I was pretty happy with how this turned out. I believe Wichita felt like he was just doing burpees the whole time. Yup, I’ll call that success.

Once we got up top to the flag by the entrance we quietly stayed on the backward-facing wall and did some Donkey Kicks. Note to self: 20 DKs in cadence are tougher now than I remember. Apparently some old ladies came out and started to yell at us because we were shaking the walls. One look at Sparky and they swooned. He apparently smiled and they became a lot more friendly. I think he may have gotten a phone number from one of the maw maws. No judgement here. Everybody need a little love, even the blue-haired beauties.

We moseyed back to the tennis courts for beatdown #2. This time it was 11’s with HIP SLAPPERS on 1 end and Big Boy situps on the other end. This was pretty painful but we eventually finished. Next we moseyed back to the flag up front and did some hip slappers. We had just enough time to mosey back to start for a few minutes of Mary. I believe I had enough when Sparky called for 10 burpees during Mary?????!!!!!! WTF? Mary doesn’t burpee!!! She’s a sweet soul that needs some gentle petting. Not pounding on the pavement with grunting and snotting around all over the place.

Both trips up to the front flag we talked a little about 1 of the books we have read at Coconut Horse called The Four Agreements. As a quick reminder, the 4 agreements were the following: Be impeccable with your word, Don’t take things personally, Don’t make assumptions, Always do your best. We also put in a plug for Q Source at Ingles. Maybe this will get a few guys out there also.

We finished with a COT full of prayer requests ranging from Turtleman to LEO to various friends and family members. Great push guys. Enjoyed being back at Folsom again as usual.

And BTW, Allen Tate was not here today.

Whoopee

In need of a deep well

Last year I was on for Gashouse Q on a rare Saturday off from work and had a great Weinke lined up ..and then all $&@ broke loose and F3 was on hold ….. so I had this gem stored away On the top shelf hoping not to be forgotten.
Yesterday had me texting Linus and I realized he had asked for a Q today …… well no better time than the present as they say!
Pledge
Announce that today I feel like a Bond villain or perhaps a villain from a B rate spy movie …. More on that …..
Speaking of movies ….. “ in the words of everyone’s favorite cowboy …..Reach for the Skyyyyyyy!” We raise arms over head and would lean back , right and left and then ….” There’s a snake in my boot!” Reaching down to our toes.

Plank position for 16 IC merkins
I’m feeling generous so we stay in plank for 12 plank jacks IC
Imperial Walkers IC 10x
SSH IC x 10

Are there any who will be doing Pain Lab , I ask.
Some slight mumble to which I say , “ Not today!! You’re still with me!” More grumbles to which I say , “ No joke, follow me!” Unbeknownst to all I approached Double Stuf early to lay ground work on this asking if he was ok with me high jacking another 5 minutes off him.
We went to amphitheater for something Rudolph showed a while back
Bear crawl up small ramp and bear crawl top level crab walk next side lunge one direction and then next each level and finish with bear crawl …. Then plank for the six.
Thankfully I only lost balance once on way up for all to film and enjoy! Im sure that blooper reel will be forthcoming.
I NOW ask again are there any takers for boot camp ….. suddenly most are willing to stay for Pain Lab so I say , “ that’s all right, I didn’t want y’all anyway!”
In truth im glad they showed and hope they enjoyed my little ‘stunt’.
Stroganoff had moseyed over to the track so we would detour to check on his status for which he said he was good.
So we are now the Three Amigos! Steve Martin, Martin Short and Chevy Chase!
Or, Clavin, Linus and JJ. Interestingly today’s theme is ……. 3
We would go to the steps behind First Presbyterian and tap each step once
Over to benches for abyss merkins 10 count 3 times through …. This is where mutinies began and talk of deep wells …. I started getting nervous ….
Back to steps and double tap each step….
Now over to the main event … BAH BAH BAHHHHH!!!!
The hill in front of the old hospital …? I asked Linus last year if anyone had ever used this he said either Freight or Sargento maybe ….
My sister in law is getting married today and her oldest , my nephew as chance would have it had a favorite story growing up …. The Three Billy Goats Gruff

bear crawl up to tarmac … had planned on crab walk down and chose to magnanimously change to crab walk to tree mosey to crest of hill and crab walk rest of hill …. Suddenly references were made that I was perhaps Gru and JJ does a really good impression!
next up same theme as we perform 3 burpees and lunge walk 10 paces  all the way up and yes! ALL THE WAY DOWN!

3 merkins and mosey to approximation of ten lunges all the way up and down

finish with 3 flutters each side ( or six total) nur up hill approximate again up and down

Good job men!!

a long one

5 Bad MFer’s showed up at downtown this am. Yup, I said it. It’s true and you deserve the truth if you are reading this. We were some bad MFer’s this am. If you weren’t there, you missed out…..BIG TIME. It was great. The weather was perfect. The air was right….until Purple Haze made it not so….but that is ok because it’s a men’s workout. And men do things that are manly. And sometimes it is offensive. But that is ok. We are men and we can handle that.

We started with a disclaimer for SA-try to keep up with the old man. Today is my birthday and 51 years old is nothing to take lightly. I really think I am just hitting my prime if you want to know the truth. Pledge was next then we did a quick warmup with 5 SSH and 1 Burpee (5-1, get it? 5-1 because I am 51 today…..stay with me. We won’t go too fast).

We moseyed a short distance to the round parking lot ? West of the pavilion. Mosey 1 lap, 10 squats. Mosey 1 lap, 20 squats….then I remembered one of our (younger) pax has a bum knee so we Omaha’d to 31 squats for total of 51 squats and cut the mosey/run short. We moseyed over to the other side (East side) to find a nice wall……I then asked a younger pax this question: “What exercise would you like to do?” and he replied with a smile, “Hip Slappers, sir.” We I showed him my electronic weinke and wouldn’t you know it, there it was, “HIP SLAPPERS” for the next exercise. So we started with 10 OYO. Not enough for this old man so we did 10 IC. We did a few more and some were OYO and some were IC. Some were fast and some were slow (but the slow ones were generally ignored). We got to 51 with a few side eye looks from the younger pax-I could tell there was a little animosity towards me….Whatever, suck it britches. We started to mosey but then I thought again. We got about 15 feet and I called for some more hip slappers just for fun. Just to be clear, that was for my fun, not yours. Slaw was leading the pack so I ‘splained to him our destination was the wall. “THE WALL. As in McQuitter’s WALL?” asked the Slaw-bag. “Why yes, Slaw, that is the wall of which I am referring” said I. So we all moseyed to THE WALL. I have not been to the wall in a while so I had to look at the brick-Hazel and Richard McQuitter. AKA Dick McQuitter. (Insert jokes here-especially the long jokes)

At the wall, we did several sets of step up’s and Derkins for a total of 51 reps of each then moseyed to the parking deck for some mo’. At the deck we did LBC’s at the bottom and Mountain Climbers and Monkey Humpers at the top. The goal was 51 reps of all of these but who knows? I said one thing about the number of reps and did almost anything else.  At the bottom we did some flutter kicks then moseyed to the art thing for dips (AKA arm squats) then headed back home. Along the way there was some chatter about getting rear ended, being in the Navy, and dropping the soap. It was kind of a blur for me and I don’t really remember what happened. I do know that I can’t sit down today. Huh? funny, that’s never been an issue. Oh well…..We got back to home base in time for some Mary then finished with a COT. Unfortunately our 5 minutes of Mary turned into 4 minutes. There was an explosion or automatic gunfire or something. All I know is it was bad, we had to stop quickly, and I was thankful the wind was not blowing in my direction.

During COT I was serenaded by Slaw aka Marilyn Monroe. It’s ok, SA. I know you are jealous. It will be your birthday soon and maybe you will get serenaded also. And don’t be ashamed of sloppy seconds. We all need some love sometimes. Just embrace it.

Prayers for Turtleman (among others). If you are reading this-get well, be strong, reach out if we can help.

thanks for coming out for my birthday. SYITG-Whoopee
