The Sword 1/31/22

5 was the number for this morning, kinda light…i guess everyone was up late watching the 49ers get beat. (sorry Huck).  Sarlacc and GearWrench went one way , me and Round UP followed Wichita to the back hills of Dallas.

18 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion.

19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God.

20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart.

Much of the Christian experience of spirituality is being present. This is said in different ways in our culture today – being mindful, living in the now, practicing awareness. This is shared by many religious traditions and is rooted in the long history of meditation.

For us as Christians, our theology of this is somewhat unique amongst the other traditions. We believe first that we focus on the now because we serve a God who cares for us, who cares even for every single sparrow, and who counts us “worth more than many sparrows” (Matthew 10:26-33). Further, we serve a God who is eternal, which means more than everlasting. Eternal means that God is utterly outside of time. Every moment of all of history in all of creation from every aspect – past, present, and future – exists fully before God. And God, as an infinite being, can focus on every single one of these moments, without limit, without pressure or the ticking of clocks, without distraction. So when we focus on the present, and “let tomorrow worry about itself” (Matthew 6:34), we focus where God is right now. In these moments, God will grace us with contemplation, where we are able to focus fully and completely on him. Then truly we “will not much remember the days of [our] life because God keeps [us] occupied with joy in [our] heart.” (Ecclesiastes 5:20)

How much time do you miss with God because you are concerned with your status in life, your bank account, your work, your due? Consider this in your holy hour today. Be present…because the present is where God is.

Beauty Sleep, Beauty Salons, Hill Sprints & 1000 Reps for those who Showed

It’s cold and there’s supposed to be so much snow and freezing rain coming in it ain’t funny. I let the pups out and to my surprise nothing. I look at the weather channel and they’re still acting it’s still snowmagedden 2022-3.0 outside. I head out to warm up the truck and still nothing. This is great for me I can do this workout as planned. I get to Old School early as usual “wink wink” to find Slaw has finished up an E/C run all by himself. Beside him is Leppard trying to stay warm in his luxurious Z71 with heated ostrich and gator skin seats and wrapped in his Snuggie. Just behind him sits Gumby and Mayor waiting patiently in the warmth of their trucks as well not realizing the royal crap storm they’re all about be in. You see I’m not a runner but today we ran. As a larger man I’m built to move large objects I’m not a big endurance guy but today we’re doing endurance work as well so let’s do it. It’s 0700 time to put in some work.

Warm Up all in cadence for 2 rounds

  • SSH
  • Gravel Pickers
  • MNC

Multiple Glute and Ham stretches before a little mosey over Old School’s Route 66 to be done with Hillbilly Squats at each let’s call them “Utility Poles” wouldn’t want any “Cable Pullers” to get offended as they tend to do right SA. That’s right you’re not here beauty sleep right.

Mosey back down Main St. to the Pharmacy headed across Trade St. down Cedar St. left on Sunset which is where Big Pappy lives so we stopped by to give his family something to talk about with a little Monkey Humping action. Now the Ol’ Slawbag really likes this a little too much you know I’ve never seen a man have to dust of his shorts after doing those but this guy knows how to get low if you know what I mean. Away we go on to Lewis St. and a quick left on to Brookgreen Dr. Now if you don’t know where this is located this road is about 1000ft long and all hill. Time for the real fun to begin.

125 Reps at the bottom and the top of the hill in an escalating/de-escalating fashion that looks something like this.

Bottom Side – Mericans/LBCs
Run up the hill
Top Side – Squats/SSH                                  Run down the hill

  • Round 1 – 100/25
  • Round 2 – 75/50
  • Round 3 – 50/75
  • Round 4 – 25/100

That’s 500 reps on each side of the hill with a 1000 reps total and the hill sprints in between.

Now that our legs are trashed we’ve now got a 10 min. trek back to the flag and only about 5 min. to do so  so let’s mosey.

0804 we’re late and Mayor is letting me know it. It would appear that he has a hair appointment and they get really anal about him being late at Paul Mitchell or Merle Norman or wherever the hell he goes. I’m so sorry guys just trying keep a reputation here if I’m not late to start a workout I’ll have to be late to finish right SA. Dang that’s right you don’t know cause you didn’t show. Beauty Sleeping and Beauty Salons what the heck are you guys doing.

All joking aside I have to say that I understand we need recovery days. I understand that we sometimes unintentionally sleep in. The thing I don’t understand is there are quite a few of us saying we’re hurting or we need to get back in shape before coming back out etc… etc… That’s crap. I had two banged up HIMS out here this morning who could have really used that excuse but chose to get their asses out of bed and join us in the COLD and GLOOM this morning and for that I was highly impressed. There were things that they couldn’t do due to their injuries but they wouldn’t let that be an excuse we worked around it with modifications. Guys if you are making excuses stop suck it up and get back out here we’ll work around whatever it is that’s ailing you so we can all get better together. Remember Iron sharpens Iron. Now that I’m finished ranting I’m stepping down from this soapbox.

COT and Pledge it out.

Stupid is an Adult Word

Eleven HIMs braved another cold and frosty morning for some Moderate Monday work, and after the pledge and a brief (and slow) warm up, the pax moseyed across the street for a short round of “Dirt”y calf raises.

Another mosey down to the Dr’s. office, with a side of slip and slide in the parking lot, and everyone was ready for the thang.

The Thang:

Count off by three: 1s to the top of the lot, 2s and 3s to the bottom. Pax at the top and bottom perform an exercise AMRAP while the third group bear crawls/lunges up to the top to relieve the top group where they begin to AMRAP. Top group mosey’s down to the bottom and starts an AMRAP of a second exercise, sending the bottom group bear crawling/lunging back to the top. Once at the top, this group starts the new exercise, the top group mosey’s down and starts the second exercise. Back and forth, up and down, the pax continues. It took a little bit for the pax to get the flow, but once we did, we flowed through merkins, squats, dying cockroaches, werkins, Bobby Hurley’s, American hammers, ranger merkins, lunges, gas pump LBCs, CDDs, Apolo Ohno’s, and big boys. A lot of conversation, and a little mumble chatter, and we learned that Stinky Bird is teaching his 2.0s that “stupid” is an adult word.

Mosey back with more slip and slide, and safely to the flag for a quick bit of Mary and time!

Bennie Adkins

13 for a themed work order in honor of medal of honor recipient Bennie G Adkins.

This hero passed away from COVID in April of 2020.

Listen to his Medal of Honor citation:

Please take 10 minutes and to the story in his own words:

A couple of quotes from Mr Adkins:

  • “You just do. Quitting isn’t an option.”
  • “The medal doesn’t really belong to me. I’m just a keeper of it for those other 16 in the battle, especially the five who didn’t make it…”

Thanks for the opportunity to lead and Purple Haze please keep your pants on.

Is Midoriyama a Running AO?

No one had signed up for the Q at Midoriyama, so YHC picked it up (he is the site Q). YHC plants the flag and PAX start showing up. Pockets had previously told the Q he would be running so he could train for the SMR. As we circle up to begin, 2 more PAX (both of whom were previous Nantans) said they were running as well. All of the sudden, Midoriyama has seemed to have devolved into a running AO! Not on YHC’s watch! Whatever, you pansies. The men are going to get work done while you “run”.

Warmup:

The Whoopee special = 1 SSH IC. Screw it. Let’s get going!

Thang:

The men (a.k.a. the ones determined to get better) head to one of the large soccer field for The Longest Mile. It consists of:

  • 10 Burpees
  • 100 Meter Run
  • 10 Big Boys
  • 100 Meter Run
  • 10 Merkins
  • 100 Meter Run
  • 10 Squats
  • 100 Meter Run

Rinse & Repeat X 4. This was performed on the sidewalk around the first large soccer field. The men were getting winded after the 2nd round but every one pushed through. Shout out to Mayor for busting his tail on this one – he was rolling. YHC discovered he posted at Folsom that morning!

Next, we headed to a small hill at the end of the large parking lot for triple nickel. 5 Tiger Squats at the bottom, Nur to top of hill, 5 SSH IC, run back down. Rinse and Repeat  X 5.

On to the small practice field for 11’s. Exercises were Hand Release Merkins and LBC’s IC. It was during this exercise that the 2 former Nantans (who were supposed to be “running”) decided to stop and become the form police. It reminded YHC of two high school JV boys harassing the varsity squad because they didn’t make the team. Hate to see it! It really didn’t matter. The men were pushing hard and didn’t have time for middle school B.S.

We then headed back toward the flag for a few minutes of Mary.

NMM:

All jokes aside, it’s great to see the guys out in the gloom trying to get better. No matter what it is, they are getting work done. It’s great to see Wojo back out. Fresh off of maternity leave, he was ready to get back at it. After a couple of his trademark “Good work, Leppard” statements, he was right back on track! Keep pushing the rock through the winter, men. We’ll be back to 94 degree afternoons before you know it!

Thank you guys for allowing me to lead.

New Dog in Town

Since the opening of The Bulldog there have been a total of 3 Site Q’s.  These have been HIPPA, Voodoo, and myself (Timeframe).  Now beginning in February this list will expand by 1 adding Spiderman as the new Site Q.  He for several reasons is an excellent successor and I am fully confident that the Bulldog is in great hands and well positioned to move forward.

We were blessed with great weather for the final Q of my time as the Site Q with a strong group of PAX that showed.  The idea coming in was to have a simple (not to be mistaken with easy) workout that would keep the PAX together and mumblechatter strong.  The KISS method.  I do believe that this was achieved.

5:30 – Pledge

Some lite stretching to get started.

We did 4 corners.  Much like the Walls of Jericho workout but no building to revolve around.

7 excercises of 7 reps each to be completed at each of the 4 corners.

SSH’s

Toy Soldiers

Squats

Merkins

Mountain Climbers

LBC’s

Windshield Wipers

This was done until around 3 minutes to go.  I think roughly 5 laps around the parking lot.

Prayer

It has been an honor to serve for the past year and a half as Site Q of this excellent AO.  The PAX have been excellent and very supportive with volunteering for Q’s and being generally great guys.  Encouraging and helpful at any chance.  I cant say thank you enough.

Next week is Spiderman’s inaugural Q as the new Site Q.  Please come out and support him, sign up for Q’s, and continue being the awesome guys that you are.

AYE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7-0

2 for EC, small crowd but solid in quality

Today is Hermie’s 70th birthday. Dang, how many 70 year olds do you know that exercise on a regular basis? Me….just 1 that I can name right now. Lotta respect for him. He shared some wisdom with us at the end, but no way was I going to miss today. Had a few regulars heading to Biloxi for a half marathon, but other than that, what was your excuse? Think about that all you fartsackers who are MUCH YOUNGER than 70 years old.

We started with disclaimer, pledge and warmup. Common practice is that on the birthday, you do that many reps, right? Today is 70 for Hermie so here was our WU:

7-ssH                                0-burpees          H

7-Elbow plank             0-burpees          E

7-Reverse lunge         0-burpees          R

7-Merkins                      0-burpees         M

7-Imperial walkers    0-burpees         I

7-Excellent flutters   0-burpees        E   (thanks for the suggestion on this exercise Strogi)

Bootcamp with me and the rest for PainLab. It was me and Stroganoff. Hills were on the menu so we headed to a neighborhood across Garrison that had some hills and we ran 3 different hills 3 times each with exercises at the top and bottom as follows:

Hill #1: bottom 10/20/30 Squats, top 5/10/15 Merkins

Hill #2: bottom 20/40/60 air presses, top 5/10/15 BigBoys

Hill #3: bottom 20/40/60 LBC, top 25/50/75 Flutters

Few jokes along the way to keep us entertained. Too bad you were not there to enjoy. #queensgate

Mosey quickly back to start for COT and Hermie dropping some wisdom on us. A few nuggets I (sort of) remember: Don’t make your life about your work. You don’t stop playing when you get old, you get old when you stop playing.

A lot of us are in the 40-50 year old range. Think about this: Who is NOT going to be here over the next 20-25 years and why? Who will still be posting at 70 years old? Who is gonna move out of town, stop posting, or get the celestial discharge (if you know what I mean)? All I can say is I am much more likely to make it to 52 if I keep posting with you numbnuts. And if that helps me get to 52, I’m pretty sure it will help me get to 60 or 70. I am also more likely to keep posting if you keep posting so do me a favor……pretty please? Get outta the f’ing fartsack and post. I need you and so do the other guys who posted at the Yank and in Folsom today. Keep “suggesting” another CSAUP that I really don’t want to do. Keep pushing me to get better and I’ll make sure I do the same for you. I’d say that’s a pretty good deal if it helps both of us eventually post on our 70th birthday.

Thanks Hermie. You are that rock someone just threw out in the lake causing a bunch of ripples I hope to benefit from.  #ISI

Special prayers for Linus whose father passed away this week. I know him from church and can say without a doubt he was a HIM before I knew what a HIM was.

Also prayers for the fools traveling to Biloxi/NOLA to run in some stupid race that I wish I was going to running in also…..safe travels guys. Have a great trip and get home safe.
