Name that tune

It was rainy this morning, so much so that Dirt and Watts Up suspended their EC until YHC arrived for the beatdown. We even drove over to the covered area at the school building in order to stay dry.

After a head count it was determined that 4 guys were manly enough to come out this morning. Rocks were found and pushed. Here’s what happened…

With YHC being pressed for preparation time, I went with old faithful, The Deck Of Death! We did whatever the card said to do. It was fun.

Probably the more important part of todays workout was that there was musical accompaniment to go along with the beatdown. YHC has had this playlist ready since January but hadn’t found the right time to bless the HIM with it. Unfortunately, Big Pappy coincidentally beat me to the punch with his 80s TV show theme song playlist several weeks ago. Gotta strike while the iron is hot! My TV theme song list was a little broader in scope though, covering shows from the 50’s all the way til now.

The songs we heard this morning included the themes from Rawhide, Mr. Ed, Sesame Street, What’s Happening!!, The Andy Griffith Show, The Monkeys, Stranger Things, The Brady Bunch, Knight Rider, The Mandalorian, The Muppet Show, The Addams Family, Twilight Zone, Mission: Impossible, Fresh Prince of Belair, Gilligan’s Island, Hawaii Five-0, The Jeffersons, The Simpsons, Sanford and Son, GI Joe, Scooby Doo, The A Team, Growing Pains, Miami Vice, CHiPs, Family Ties, Yellowstone and even the Olympics. We didn’t have time to get to Fat Albert, Inspector Gadget, The Pink Panther, The Golden Girls, The Flintstones or The Beverly Hillbillies but rest assured, the hits will be back.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead today men. I hope you had fun!

YHC took us out.

Aye!

“It didn’t look that far on Google Maps”

“5:30, let’s mosey” is how the morning began.  YHC knew there was no time to spare with a warmup but paused in the traffic circle for a count-off and 5 burpees, 10 squats and 15 LBC’s before continuing our mosey around past the buses to the southeast corner of the building.  Where wall meets sidewalk is suitable terrain for “suspension merkins,” the first element of 11’s to be paired with big-boy situps all the way back at the traffic circle.  Suspension merkins are tough, but YHC underestimated the distance between exercises that made this set of 11’s last longer than anticipated (hence the title of this post).   It was after 6:05 when the second set of 11’s commenced with Dips at the school entrance and oblique crunches at the middle island of the parking lot.  Halfway through these 11’s it was time to head to COT.

Breaker Breaker asked for prayers for a relative.

Aye,

It Was Supposed to Be Colder

It was a great morning considering the forecast just a few days before… it had been forecast to be in the teens, but the weather did not cooperate and it was in the upper 30’s!  And there were 12 of us ready to get in a good workout.

No FNGs so a quick disclaimer and it was go time…

Warm Up

SSH – 20 IC
Imperial Walker Squats – 15 IC
Burpees – 10 OYO

Pledge

The Thang

Mosey down the hill and take a left headed towards the back entrance.  At each speed bump drop and do 20 LBCs, plank for the six at the stop sign.

Triple Nickel at the hill – monkey humpers at the bottom, jump squats at the top.

Mosey back down the road to the roundabout at the front of the school…  again, 20 LBCs at each speed bump.

We went around the circle with each of the pax calling an exercise.  The caller then had the choice of either running a lap around the parking lot in front of the school, or doing a bear crawl around the roundabout… Dirt and Nutria were the only two takers for the bear crawl.  Called exercises included the seal jack, Freddie Mercury, CDD, dying cockroach, flutter kick, big boy situp, hand release merkin, American hammer, monkey humper, and Watts Up invited us all to run the lap with him.

We then had a short mosey to the side of the school for a set of 11’s.  The exercises were flutter kicks and hand release merkins.  Time was drawing short and a few of us had to miss our last round or two as it was time to head back to the flag.

Everyone put in some good hard work to get just a little bit better.

2/23/21 – The STORM

Thirteen storm chasers showed up at The Storm to get in some good work in the pre-dawn gloom.  By the time we were finished, we could see the sky getting brighter on the east horizon.  It was a great start to the day!  EZ Rider, Watts Up, BOS and Dirt got in some EC before the work out.

I’m Broke

Welcome to Groundhog Day at the Storm. Welcome to Groundhog Day at the Storm.

Welcome to Groundhog Day at the Storm. Any FNG’s?  (No.)
I’m not an expert, so anything I say is just a suggestion. Modify as needed. The first exercise is the side-straddle hop. Ready position, Move. In cadence, Exercise! (IC x 22)

Today’s workout will be a series of Four Corners exercises. The four corners are marked by the orange cones around the parking lot. At each corner we’ll do 22 reps of the exercise written next to the cone. The sheets at each of the cones will also tell you how to move to the next corner. To keep track of how many circuits we’ve completed, the first PAX back here after all 4 corners will take one Groundhog out of this box, place it in the next chalk circle, and Plank for the Six. We’ll move to the next round together.

Let’s mosey this way to the first cone.

1. 22 Flutter kicks – count one leg (Bear crawl to next cone)
2. 22 Bobby Hurleys (Karaoke to next cone)
3. 22 Shoulder Taps – each shoulder (Lunge walk to next cone)
4. 22 Merkins

Funny thang, after the first round it seems like we started all over, like YHC and the 11 PAX were stuck in a time warp, and must’ve repeated the same first round 6 or 7 times (the stuffed groundhog somehow mysteriously jumped back in the box every time – maybe he saw his shadow?) before a train rolled through and broke the twisted cycle. After the obligatory 5 burpees plus 15 seconds of LBC’s YHC ended the madness with the pledge.

Tammy Wynette and Single Count Confusion at The Storm

A massive thunderstorm scared off all but 8, who put in work at The Storm of a different kind.  Here’s what I remember:

  • 10 x Goofballs (IC)
  • 10 x Don Qs (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbilly Walkers (IC)

The Thang

Unsure of what kind of conditions we’d be in, the plan was to utilize the cover, so we moseyed to the front door of the school to start things off with

Tammy Wynettes

  • Pax 1 does 10 reps of a ground exercise
  • Pax 2 does 10 reps of a standing exercise, matching the pace and rhythm of Pax 1 (“Stand By Your Man”)
  • Ground Exercise: 10 x Mike Tysons
  • Standing Exercise: 10 x Imperial Squats
  • 2 Rounds, so each Pax did both exercises 20x total

A bluetooth speaker would have been nice at this point, or even just the forethought to actually play the song with the speaker on YHC’s trusty iPhone, but that’s what a better Q would have done.  Anyways, that was quickly done, being only 2 rounds, so we moseyed back to the covering by the side door to unroll the instructions for The Main Event (“Because that was just the warm up.”)

The Main Event was a set of 11s as follows

  • Side Door
    • 1 Burpee
    • 1 Travolta (right arm)
    • 1 Toe Touch
  • On the way from the Side Door to the Front Door, stop for
    • 7 Squats
    • 7 Dips
  • Front Door
    • 10 Hand Release Merkins
    • 10 Travoltas (left arm)
    • 10 Toe Touches
  • Mosey all the way back to the Side Door

And it’s 11s, so you know the drill

For intermission, once the 5/6 round was completed, at the Side Door, complete the following before starting the 6/5 round:

  • 100 Flutter Kicks (Count 1 Side Only)
  • 100 People’s Chair Overhead Presses
  • PAX discretion on how to break these up

Too many instructions, and a lot to remember, but the rhythm of it all was pretty natural after the growing pains of the first round.  YHC made the mistake of declaring that he finally understood what “Single Count” meant, only to be confused again by the discussion that followed.  Surely there is an easier way to describe it.  YHC will stick to “one side only” while calling exercises and will ask for clarification from another Q for the foreseeable future.  No time for a second full round of Flutters or Wall Sits, or even to make up the 5 burpees for the train as we only had time for a few Flutter Kicks at the end of it all.

A quiet COT at the Side Door, either inspired by the intensity of the workout, a lack of sleep from the thunderstorms, or both.

Moleskin:

Outdoors.  Rain or Shine.  Part of what we learn in The Gloom is consistency.  Roscoe will be the first to tell you that “Tomorrow is Thursday and we hit The Pub on Thursday.”  When the decision is already made, it’s just a matter of executing the decision.  I’ve learned not to wait until the morning to decide whether or not to post, because if I did that, there’d be a lot of times that I wouldn’t make it.  No try, only do.

When it comes to consistency, there’s not better examples than Dirt, Watts Up, and Dr. Seuss.  Whether it’s leading EC at 0500 at a bootcamp, first in line to volunteer to Q, or posting twice on a Tuesday, you know these PAX will be there.  These HIMs push me every day.  It’s great to Q on uncertain days like this knowing you’re not going to be the only one showing up.

Watts Up hit 100 miles in January already this month, after getting painfully close during the November Challenge.  It’s not any easier, Watts Up.  You’re just getting stronger.  A well-deserved Most Improved PAX who isn’t slowing down.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

These Bricks are Cold…

Started out a brisk morning and 5.30 came. As always lets Mosey a good solid mile… or more… with brick in each hand. Stopped at several points and did:

LBC – 50

Merkins 25

then made it to the island in center road and began 11’s down to the next island back up with bricks did I mention. ( lot of whining about my bricks are cold so I told them to put them in their pants but that was a little rough on the … anyway. Continued after 11’s stopping at many intersections ending with pipes and team work. Each time someone dropped the pipe we did 5 burpees.. needless to say we did a lot of burpees.

Ended with pledge and prayer mostly for our country. God bless America and you guy!

2 Years!

Coming in from EC with Dirt, Flintstone, JJ, Pockets, and Sausage, YHC wasn’t sure how many were going to attend on this cold-ish, damp morn.  By the time 0530 hits, the count had doubled with 13 ready for a celebration.

Some noteworthy things for 12-Jan

  • Joe Frazier birth – 1944
  • Rush Limbaugh birth – 1951
  • Howard Stern birth – 1954
  • Jeff Bezos birth – 1964
  • Agatha Christie death – 1976
  • Persian Gulf War – 1991
  • Major Earthquakes in Haiti – 2010
  • YHC started in F3 – 2019

Warmup:

  • 1 Burpee
  • 12 Merkins
  • 21 SSH

As we took off on a mosey, YHC reminded everyone, YHC was giving suggestions, modify as needed.

Celebration:

Mosey to the roundabout, the longish way.

1st A-L-A-R-M

  • 5 Shoulder Presses
  • 10 Lunges (Single Count)
  • 15 LBCs

Mosey to the school, following the road.

2nd A-L-A-R-M

  • 10 Dips
  • 20 Calf Raises

Thanks to all the men of F3 and particularly those of Gastonia for paving the 43 feet I have been traveling down for the past two years.  I appreciate the push, pull, encouragement, advise and candor that have been given along the way.  This journey may have made me less of a man in some respects, but it has made me a better man in the ways that matter.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.
