Swings and things …

Delinquent post apologies from YHC.  Ran over the dog and such … many excuses … now hard to remember what we did, but Q can make stuff up with the best.

Warm – up: SSH, etc. 8-Count body-builders I assume, cuz I usually like to.

Pledge

Thang – Mosey to park stopping at boulder run with a burpee at each boulder.  Mosey to grassy area beside playground.  Someone happened to leave a heavy bag in the parking lot so we played plank ring around the rosey running around with the heavy bag.  Entered the playground and partnered up.  Half the pax had feet in the swings for knees to chest while partner did squats.  1 minute time AMAP.  Switch.  Next did “Flying squats / Supermans” with swings holding chest / belly.  Partner did curtsy lunges.  Switch.  Set of Jack Webbs to 10 followed by more squats.  Mosey back towards Pelicans picking up the heavy bag and working together to get it home.  Knee highs, butt-kickers, arm Chinooks, etc. along the route.  Stopped for additional sets of core exercises.

Moleskin – Nice core-focused work men!   Great to see some Saturday “regulars” posting during the week.  Regular posting = acceleration.

Flying EH- This is how you do it.

16 pax started ITG. 17 finished. But more on that later. YHC led the pax to the Busted Grill(Respect) ropes and pull-up bars. But first things first.

Warm up
SSH IC x 25
Imperial Walkers IC x 25

Now the Thang.
Run 1 lap. Sprint on straight aways, recover on curves.
Option A- climb rope and slap top.
Option B- 5 pull ups
5 burpees.

Rinse and repeat, BUT each time you add 1 lap and 5 burpees.
If you reach 5 laps and 25 burpees, walk the ladder back down.
Don’t forget your rope climb or 5 pull ups each time.

CoT
Welcome Paperjam from F3SonsofBallentine, and Dr. Feelgood from F3Gastonia. Dr Feelgood brought 2 FNGs from Chucktown. Yorktown and JoeDirt. We expect to hear about you posting in Charleston. Hoff brought FNG (Chad Lyon) Sleepless, and he pulled a Flying EH on a sad clown who happened to be at the track. FNG (Scott Holzwarth) is now Junior, as in The Hoff Jr. Thanks for all of the guests and FNGs. Thanks for the opportunity to get stronger and for the men/women on the front lines.

Moleskin-
YHC worked hard to come up with something that would work for FNGs and bust the balls of our rabbits. This one seemed to work pretty well. Dr Feelgood was in the lead for FNGS with 2, however Hoff improvised and overcame with a flying EH that worked to perfection. On each lap Hoff worked a little conversational magic on the sad clown in the curve. Then on the final lap, with the charm and subtlety of a sledgehammer, Hoff helped Junior evolve from sad clown to joining the BOM in a matter of minutes. Tclaps to Hoff and Dr Feelgood. Paper jam, you fessed up about being in town all week. Now you are locked in. Expect to see you tomorrow Hugh MacRae Park. Everyone pushed hard and gave it their all. Each of you are faster today, than you were yesterday. #gettingstronger #Ironsharpensiron Thanks for the honor and privilege to lead today.

Gastonia Site Qs

Site Qs have been identified for each of Gastonia’s AOs.  The site Q has the overall responsibility for workouts at those locations.

Site Qs have the following responsibilities…

  • Ensure each workout has a QIC scheduled 3-4 weeks ahead of time
  • If a QIC cannot be identified, the site Q will lead that workout
  • Update the Gastonia Q Schedule document on Google Drive
  • Ensure QICs are getting backblasts posted
  • Encourage new PAX to lead workouts, co-Q with guys on VQs, etc…

Running with(out) the wind

4 strong #HIM fought off the sack monster this morning to post at a rather humid Derecho this morning.  Lots of mumble before the workout about how much we love to run (not).  Therefore on a whim I threw out the weinke and decided we should try running today

Warm -up:

SSH IC x20

Don Quioxte IC x 15

Imperial Walkers IC x 20

Merkins (why not) IC x12

The Thang:

Started off by running out of the parking lot and across the street then through the neighborhood to goat island and across, around BBT.  Somehow missed a sign that read no left turn and ended up running an additional mile under the railroad tracks all the way to Market street and back up 8th St back to Goat Island.  With the group blazing a sub 9 min/mile pace YHC decided to detour and do some dips on goat island before returning to SCHS.  Total distance 4.5 miles.

Finished with 22 Merkins for the vets.

All in all it was an outstanding performance from a group who proved today they do enjoy running!!

Prayer Requests – Family member of one of monk’s students facing cancer treatment, Friend of friend having double lung transplant, YHC’s stepmom who had a stroke last night.

As always I got out of bed to exercise my mind but in the end, the chatter and camaraderie that exercises my mind is what will keep me coming back for more

Defib – out

Fighting Yank – Next Exercise is……The Squat

12 Strong Men posted for the 3rd edition at the Fighting Yank in Belmont. There was a large amount of pre-workout mumble chatter as the PAX gathered, not sure if this was in anticipation of the coming work or last nights “Guinness” (Tool Time). Regardless, YHC worked his way to the Flag to begin the work.

With no FNG’s in attendance, we dispensed with the disclaimer and got right to work.

Warm-Up (In-Cadence)

SSH X 15 LBC’s X 15
Imperial Walkers X 15 Freddy Mercury’s X 15

Pledge of Allegiance

The Thang

We then moseyed up main street for the first stop of the day at the Sun Trust Bank parking lot. I thought this one up the night before but had no name for it so as we arrived and I looked around I brilliantly decided to call this “The Sun Trust 6”, I know, very original. Here’s how it went:

Start at the curb closest to the side street and bear crawl to the center concrete divider for 10 merkins followed by lunges across the other side of the parking lot. (That’s one). Then lunge back to the concrete divider for 10 more merkins followed by bear crawling back to the starting point. (That’s two) The PAX felt a pattern. We did this for a total of six reps. I’m sure the PAX is grateful (or ticked) when the Q calls out an exercise group and is the last one to finish……oh well. The “Don’t Q it if you can’t do it” rule said nothing about speed of completion.

After a count off (I think), we moseyed back to the pavilion in the middle of the park for some Dora 1-2-3. Partner up for an aggregate count of Merkins (100), Flutter Kicks (200) and Squats (300). As Partner 1 did the exercise, Partner 2 ran the path back to the main steps, up the steps and back to the pavilion to switch off. This went on until YHC came to terms with the fact that it was hot and humid and he was tired. Most of the group finished before a short break before the next exercise.

It was around this time that YHC admitted he had a weinke in his pocket and being shocked that it was only about 7:30 am at this point made the brilliant statement the weinke was useless because it was too short and that I would not get it out. The admission of not pulling it out because it was too short was the source of most of the remaining mumble chatter for the day.

A slow mosey ensued until we arrived at the upper field/track behind Belmont Middle School for another rendition of the Wolfpack Grinder that included:

12 Squats IC – Run half lap – 20 merkins OYO – plank for the six – short rest
12 Squats IC – Run half lap – 20 LBC’s OYO – plank for the six – short rest
12 Squats IC – Run half lap – 20 mountain climbers OYO – plank for the six – short rest
12 Squats IC – Run half lap – 40 flutter kicks OYO – plank for the six – short rest
12 Squats IC – Run half lap – 20 merkins OYO – plank for the six – short rest
10 Squats IC – Run half lap – 20 LBC’s OYO – plank for the six – short rest

It has to be 8:00 am already……but no.

How to finish…….Top Hat suggested we could always do dips so here we go. Mosey to the picnic shelter for some dip-o-rama.

Dips X 20 IC
12 Squats IC (Including some type of Whoopee lunge squat disco exhibition – disturbing)
Dips X 15 IC
12 Squats IC (Another disturbing Whoopee exhibition)

One last Mosey to the fountain for some Mary (not actually sure what we did):

Short Sale called out some type of heel (or hell) taps for 10 reps on each leg
Freight made me break the no burpee pledge as he called out “10 Burpees”
Whoopee finished it off with some……something, I really don’t remember. Dang.

Good work men. Announcements. Prayer requests. Name-O-Rama.

Advisory board on Sunday at On the Border. Prayers for Godfather and his M. Prayers to a friend of Radar.

Finished with the COT prayer. 5 for coffeeteria at Cherubs.

As always, it was an honor to lead you men today.

Until the next one. Aye!

Fire Your Travel Agent!

16 of Gas House’s strongest “rock pushers” buckled in, reclined their First Class seats, and sipped Merlot with YHC on a short, relaxing one hour flight. Our final destination was Ball of Man but here’s what happened in between takeoff and landing…

Mosey downhill (truthful statement for once) to shovel flag for COT/BOM

  • Wheels down!

Announcements:

  • Today, 10:00a.m. – Martha Rivers Park – F3 Dads
  • 6/26, 7:00p.m. – at On the Border (Gastonia) – leadership advisory group meeting
  • 7/2, still need a 3rd F Q if anyone is interested – get details from Monk

Moleskin:

  • Many prayer requests today: way too many folks in this world fighting cancer or dealing with mental issues so overwhelming that they contemplate suicide. Prayers help but do what you can to lift these folks in their time of need – even if it’s done anonymously
  • Shout out to T-Square who’s been suffering with a kidney stone issue for over 2 weeks and is STILL posting at workouts! Billy Madison summed it up best by saying “That’s an F3 Man!” YHC has a paper cut (left pinkie…it hurts) – no prayers for me? JEEZZZ!
  • Dolph – we have posted together at probably 70 to 100 workouts – when will you stop being such a slacker??? At least TRY, would you? It’s embarrassing dude!
  • You all accumulated just over 3 frequent flyer miles today…WOW…only 999,997 to go to earn a burpee free workout!
  • Good call by Spud and good extra credit effort (post workout) by the PAX to send 22 merkins to our troops suffering PTSD and other ailments that lead to suicide
  • There were plenty of “midwife noises” during our journey (mostly from YHC) but in standard Gas House fashion, every warrior soldiered through and finished strong.
  • YHC honored his promise by making all running portions of the workout downhill – YOU ARE WELCOME!
  • Always an honor to post with you HIMs – thanks for allowing me to pilot this trip – AYE!

Back pain or SV?

My first QIC for Downtown required a bit of preparation. Several trips to Lowe’s Home Improvement for PVC pipes, concrete blocks, rebar, sand, and duct tape (can always use more duct tape). On toasty summer evenings, I sat in my garage filling the PVC with sand – a mad F3 scientist at work to design the perfect beat down. Idle time on long winded conference calls shifted my ADD mind to crafting a Weinke to employ my new toys to good use. Everything was set until Tuesday when I went to visit the boys at Midoriyama. We all have our internal goals and my bucket list includes a subset to visit all of our regions AO’s at least once. Freight and the boys welcomed me to share the oven they call home two afternoons a week. Somewhere along the way, maybe an extra flutter kick or crunch that my lower back did not appreciate, pushed me to the bench for a few days. But I was determined to post and do my best to guide the PAX.

Thursday night, with my family out of town, I practiced my warm-up cadence and routine for an audience of one. The dog stared at me quizzically as if I had truly lost my mind. It was a good exercise in many ways as a few jolts of pain up my spine had seal jacks and side straddle hops soon replaced with back friendly stretches. Applying the standard moniker of “if you can’t Q-it, don’t do it,” I performed a trial of the tabata circuits and running listed on the Weinke leaving me sweaty and sore. After a shower I washed down 1000 mg of ibuprofen with a bud light, coated my back with a healthy squeeze of Ben Gay and set my alarm for 4:30 am, hoping I would hold up to lead the session.

Friday morning after a brief stretch and using the seat warmer to kick start my tender back, I arrived early to set up shop on in the parking lot west of the Rotary Pavilion, with my 8 stations of pain. I was happy to see 9 PAX were gathered, stretching, and waiting for instructions. I made sure to give the disclaimer that YHC failed to heed earlier in the week. Let’s get to it:

Warm-up:

Grass Pickers – IC x 15; Side to Side Lunge – IC x 15; Squat/Jack/Twist -> Merkin IC x 15; Step back Lunge w/ twist (new – good stretch to do) – Sgl Count x 10; Seal Jacks -> Superman – Sgl Count x 20 (thought about going the whole 45 minutes with this but Whoopee was itching to do something more fun – I’ve come to realize he hates long warm-ups); Side Straddle Squats -> (this was going to be a new one…don’t worry, you’ll see it soon enough) -> CDD – IC x 15

The Thang:

Moseyed east around the big block for 0.5 mile run with my new mini-speaker playing the theme from Rocky. Whoopee climbed all three steps to Gastonia’s wonderful convention center raising his hands in victory – nice that building got some attention. We circled back to the Rotary Pavilion to see the 8 pain stations with brand new tokens ready to be touched for the very first time (did I just quote a Madona song? Guess I did…). Directions were provided to complete a Tabata circuit for 20 seconds of the exercise with a 10 second rest, moving to the next station. We went two rounds, ran a lap, came back for a final round with another lap.  We partnered for the stations – I was lucky enough to draw Stroganoff – he was on fire today…

  1. Cinderblock curls
  2. American Hammer with homemade duct tape rebar stick (made a kayak motion to burn the abs)
  3. Chair Squats with sand-filled PVC
  4. WW I Sit Ups with sand-filled PVC
  5. Side to side hops (over a block)
  6. Merkins
  7. Medicine Ball Chest Pass
  8. Dumbbell Swing (squat and raise the dumbbell to eye-level as you stand up)

We did a total of 3 circuits and ran 2 miles. We finished with two minutes for Mary: Plank Jack with Arm Taps and Pretzel Crunch (left then right). Whoopee reminded of Anthrax’s challenge regarding our Military Veterans where on average each day, 22 of these brave Americans take their lives due to the challenge to acclimate after their service. We knocked out 22 ‘Mericans. You can continue this OYO.

COT:

Pledge; Namorama;

Announcements: Stroganoff has the Q at Fighting Yank; I forgot to mention to the PAX F3 Dads this Saturday, 10 am at Martha Rivers Park – contact JK2; Whoopee reminded of Advisory Board Meeting Sunday night at On The Border – open to all. We circled for the prayers which highlighted continued prayers for Godfather, his M, and their family; new prayer lifted for a former student of Monk’s also beginning their grief journey.

Moleskin:

Had I not been QIC, I may have deemed myself to remain on the IR, rubbing my sandy V, but the opportunity to be with a group of men and push to become better was what I needed. There are many other folks dealing with far worse and I need to consider the blessings I’ve received, one of which is opportunity to be among F3. Thanks to the PAX to allow me to lead the fun. Until next time – Aye!

Hottest day of 2016 – Let’s play cards!

The thermometer in my car flashed 103 Thursday afternoon as I pulled into Midoriyama for my first ever Q! (VQ)

Most men would stay in the AC and sip some Iced Tea.

F3 men see this as a perfect opportunity to workout.

F3-Midoriyama men saw a chance to enjoy a little casino night with the fellas!

8 men showed up for the hottest day of the year and used some card games to trick the mind as we pushed ourselves to “double down”!!!

The Thang: SSH x 20 IC, LBCs x 20 IC, Mericans x 20 IC, Floyd Mayweathers x 20 IC, Zombie Walkers entire length of the fence to grab our coupons!

Now that everyone has a coupon – let the games begin! Mosey with coupons to the soccer field! (1/3 mile)

Deck of Death x combined with C2C (corner 2 corner) on the soccer field!

Each corner has all 13 cards in a suit. Diamonds = diamond pushups, Clubs = Sit ups, Hearts = squats, Spades = bicep curls with cinder blocks

Sprint from corner to corner to blind draw your next card. Number you draw = your reps up to 14 on Aces! Then sprint to next station. Best 5 card poker hand gets a nice “pot” at the end. Competitive fun and effectively distracting from the sprints around the soccer field in the heat….all good – until we found a card shark in our midst! Cries of “Cheater” rang out as Freight started with Aces his first two cards and ended with a FULL HOUSE!

The Card Shark aka: Freight got to assign all of his LBCs to his victims – I mean friends in the Pax as we all played a game of….Black Jack!

More sprints sideline to sideline! Start with 1 Merican then sprint across the field to give me 20 LBCs. Sprint back and give me 2 Mericans x sprint back for 19 LBCs! Continue until you reach 20 Mericans and 1 LBCs. Always equals 21….BLACK JACK! (We Omaha’ed this one when the “table got cold” when we reached the halfway point.) 🙁

Mosey back to the flag (1/3 mile) with coupons in hand! Ended with Captain Thors until time ran out! (reached approx. 8 situps x 32 hammers)

Great workout today men! What an honor to lead this group and lose my V-tags on the hottest day of the year! 😉 We continued to run almost the entire 45 minutes today while sprinting and/or carrying weights at all times! Midoriyama men know how to have fun – that’s for sure!

I have a feeling I’ll get some dirty looks if I ever invite you all over for a poker night! #SorryNotSorry Pax!
