2/13/21 Inaugural F3 Extinction Run

Warm up: Nope it never did… 36 degrees (feels like 28) with 93% chance of rain.

The week of the Extinction Run I bet I checked the weather three times a day while thinking to myself this is going to be ugly. But in true F3 CSAUP fashion we had 33 HIM, M’s and 2.0’s toe the line for the inaugural F3 Extinction Run benefiting Holy Angels.

For those of you that may not have heard, it went something like this. One mile run against the clock; one mile at a time. Each loop begins and ends at Primal Brewery. From the start the first mile must be completed within the 13-minute time limit. The second mile cannot be started until the siren sounds at the 13-minute mark. Second mile pace and each mile following will be reduced by 15 seconds. Mile two must be completed within 12:45 time limit, mile three within 12:30 and so on. Runner must meet the time limit to proceed to the next mile.
The siren sounded the start of the first lap as the Cheer Dinosaur and DJ Huckleberry were hyping the crowd. Thirty-three runners sped through the course and returned to the line to watch the timer count down the first lap. A quick reset of the timer and we were off for lap number two. A couple of miles in we lost a few runners to the timer. Next the weather started to flex its muscle. Intermittent rain, variable winds, and a temperature that refused to rise. Around the five-mile mark we had a few more runners pull into the pits. This may have had something to do with the fact that the brewery had opened early for us. Time for a breakfast beer! As the miles clicked away some runners added an extra layer, a hat or dry gloves while others were running without these items, including two 2.0s running without shirts. Ten miles in and the field was still running strong. We passed the half marathon point and still had a sizeable field running against the clock and the elements. Mile fourteen took off at a 9:45 pace and our last two 2.0s bowed out. They had plenty left in the tank but their running coach told them to pump the brakes at this point.
Miles fifteen through eighteen the recovery time between laps was getting shorter but the drive and determination of the pax was in high gear. A few more had to drop due to weekend HIM time constraints. I believe these guys are already looking for a rematch…
If the weather would have been spectator friendly the crowd would have been going wild at this point as this race was getting more and more exciting with every lap. Instead, they were inside Primal Brewery getting warm, watching through the windows. With the music still pumping and the wind and rain still playing along the last two laps were left to Bono and MiniVan.
They pushed through and finished the 20th mile loop below an 8:15 pace before pulling into the pits and bringing the Inaugural F3 Extinction Run to a close. Great job by everyone! Next time I will work harder on the weather!

Here are your winners!

PAX
1st Place = Bono
2nd Place  = Hauschka
3rd Place = Purple Haze

M’s
1st Place = Fresh Prince
2nd Place = MiniVan

2.0’s
1st Place = Omaha
2nd Place  =Yo Pauly
3rd Place = Phelps

After a cheers to the runners and the crowd in the brewery and a brief medal ceremony we made not so quick work of naming M Tiger with her new F3 name MiniVan. Next up the 50/50 drawing. The 50/50 pot grew to $186 after Musicbox and Erica worked their way through the crowd making it a $93 each split for Holy Angels and the ticket holder. The winner was drawn and Medicine Woman had the lucky number, but the lucky ones turned out to be Holy Angels as Medicine Woman donated his winnings too. Now that’s a HIM.
The near final tally of the day cleared $700 for Holy Angels with a few more dollars still coming in. YHC will provide an update on the total once later this week. We hope to present the check to Holy Angels at Cherubs after The Fighting Yank on Saturday. Thanks to all of you for your donations.
And last but certainly not least, Thank You to all of our volunteers! Pilgrim, Musicbox (AKA Cheer Dino), Carrie (AKA M Pilgrim), Flintstone, Medicine Woman, Huckleberry, Roscoe, and BuckShot. With your help setup, parking, traffic control, runner safety, music and entertainment made the day a complete success! Would anyone like to volunteer to take on weather control next time?
I hope enjoyed it. Until next time!

To be a nasty day it ended up being a great workout. Other than the burpees there was very little cardio burn but it doesn’t have to be to be a good workout. I wore out the muscle groups we focused on. For some reason this workout was full of that’s what she said comments.

Voracious Unbreakable Devoted Outdoor Outlaws

For motivation, here’s the storyline to the award-winning 1976 movie, Rocky.

Rocky Balboa is a struggling boxer trying to make the big time, working as a debt collector for a pittance. When heavyweight champion Apollo Creed visits Philadelphia, his managers want to set up an exhibition match between Creed and a struggling boxer, touting the fight as a chance for a “nobody” to become a “somebody”. The match is supposed to be easily won by Creed, but someone forgot to tell Rocky, who sees this as his only shot at the big time.

Level 1

One thing about marriage is you do lots of activities together with your partner…

Let’s do 11’s  with Hand Release Merkins on Level 1 and Squats on Level 2.  Take the stairs to get to Level 2, but run the ramp back to Level 1.  Partner 1 and Partner 2 do this together at the same time, at the same pace.

Meander to Level 2.

Sometimes a partner doesn’t feel well, is hurt, etc. and the other partner has to do all the work…

Let’s do 11’s again.  This time with Burpees on Level 2 and Burpees on Level 3.  Again, take the stairs up and the ramp down.  This time one partner works while the other planks…

  • P1 – 10/1 Burpees, P2 High Plank
  • P2 – 9/2 Burpees, P1 High Plank
  • P1 – 8/3 Burpees, P2 Low Plank
  • P2 – 7/4 Burpees, P1 Low Plank
  • P1 – 6/5 Burpees, P2 High Plank
  • P2 – 5/6 Burpees, P1 High Plank
  • P1 – 4/7 Burpees, P2 Low Plank
  • P2 – 3/8 Burpees, P1 Low Plank
  • P1 – 2/9 Burpees, P2 High Plank
  • P2 – 1/10 Burpees, P1 High Plank

Meander to Level 3

In a marriage, you work together to accomplish goals…

Time for some Dora 1,2,3  P1 does the work, P2 runs to Level 4 via stairs and back via ramp.  Then flapjack.

  • 100 CDDs
  • 200 Calf Raises
  • 300 Dying Cockroaches

Mosey back to the flag, with enough time left to get 5 more burpees in for the train…

Time!

Announcements:

Ecclesiastes 9:9
Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labour which thou takest under the sun.

NMM:

Got surprised but not blindsided this morning. No biggie. YHC has done this long enough to figure something out on the fly. That is what experience does for you and is why YOU need to step up and lead! I try to keep it down to 4 a month because we can’t build leaders without letting them get their hands dirty and maybe even fail. No one goes through life undefeated. Unless you don’t ever step up and get your ass in the game. And even with the best preparation you need to get that it can go awry real fast. There remains no doubt in my mind that when Neil and Buzz got that 1201 alarm at 35,000 feet coming down to the lunar surface on 7/20/69 their training and experience as combat fighter pilots is why they go the job done. Which means they spent all of their adult lives putting themselves out there and being at risk. No more so than they did that day and became the first humans to set foot on another world.

Now, that’s extreme stuff there but you need to get the point. Which is step up, expect for things to go bad and recover.  And related to that is when it does go downhill there is always one more thing you can do to get to a position of advantage. And after that another and after that another. Three strikes and you are not out in the real world. So push the rock and get in the arena.  We need you to do that.

Welcome FNG Liono. A fellow North Meck Redneck! he doesn’t know it but there is a song written about us. I’ll sing it someday. Show to know!

Prayer Requests

There were some struggles during the Name-o-rama, but we did our best.

Prayer to take us out.

This was followed by a good discussion at Q-Source led by Stroganoff on Agreement #4: Always Do Your Best.

Fortune Teller Fitness

13 brave souls came out for some fortune telling fitness. What’s that you say? It’s taking fortune teller origami and converting into a workout. Yea, definitely didn’t think through working fingers in 28 degree weather so definitely plan on bringing it back in summer with a few tweaks. We got the shake and bake going with 25 SSH, 5 burpees, 3X with morrocon night clubs sprinkled in as well. We mosied around to the Belmont Middle School wall for some 30 second wall sits and 10 Merkins. We made our way to the shelter for the fortune telling to begin.

THE TWO FORTUNE TELLER ORIGAMIs- set of exercises (jump Squats, Shoulder Taps, Hammer Curls, Smerkins – slow merkins) and lower reps (10,20,30,40) and set of exercises (Dying Cockroaches, Plank Jacks, Werkins, Monkey Humpers) with higher reps(15,25,35,50). On the outside, one fortune teller had names of F3 Sites – Folsom, Storm, Yank, Goat and the other had some acronyms/terms of F3 – SYITG, Clown, QSource, Lexicon. We ran laps after every 2-3 pulls, rotating between indian runs, karaoke and nervs.

Once we did all cards, we moseyed over for some shady stretching, balls to the wall right foot to ground right hand, switch, hold and then head back to the yank.

We mosied our way back to Yank landing zone and did some final minutes of Mary then 1 minute of Burpees. We did the pledge and gathered prayers in the circle. Many shared around healing of COVID or prayers for those dealing with loss – let’s continue to be there for each and everyone!!!

The fortune telling was not accurate, it was brutal at times but hopefully sharpened each HIM to know there’s only one in control of their fortune and that’s God. Know him and seek his plan for you, Shady OUT!

The Toboggan. It’s not just a runnerless sled.

9 showed today for what was inevitably my last Q at The Ricky Bobby as I’m probably not going to be invited back to MHC headquarters after a workout consisting of merkins, Merkins, and more MERKINS.

Buckeye was out early for some EC, the rest showed up at go time, so we went.

The Thang:

  • 15 x SSH (IC)
  • 15 x Seal Jacks (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tyson’s (IC) – (“Well that escalated quickly”)
  • 5 x X Plyo Merkins (IC) – Start from plank, narrow hands & narrow feet. Down -1, Up and off the ground into wide hands and wide feet position – 2, Down – 3, Up and off the ground back to narrow hands and narrow feet position – 4
  • 5 x Eskimo Merkins (My Count) – A Dirt specialty.  Down, nose to ground & up – 1.  Down, nose to ground & micromerkin nose to ground again for a total of 2 touches – 2.  Repeat to 5.
  • 30 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 40 x Toe Touches (IC)
  • 30 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 40 x Flutter Kicks (IC)

YHC was calling for the bell at that point, and was glad the round was over.  Calling cadence got tough.  We knocked out the pledge and moseyed across New Hope to the church where more merkins were waiting.

YHC called it a triple nickel, but some disagreed with the name.  Not sure how it can get more triple nickel than 5 exercises of 5 reps 5 times.  Here’s what it was:

  • Side 1
    • 5 x Diamond Merkins
    • 5 x Pseudo Planche Merkins – Merkins with grip reversed, fingers pointing at toes, hands under belly
  • Middle
    • 5 x Burpees (One Way only)
  • Side 2
    • 5 x CDDs
    • 5 x Chuck Norris Merkins

After the call, YHC was reminded that the Site Q was none other than the President of the Merkin Haters Club.  Regardless, work was done by all.  Mosey back to the Scout Hut.

Partner up for something in the form of Lazy Dora.

  • Partner 1 – 25 x Squats
  • Partner 2 – People’s Chair w/air presses

Switch after each set of the 25 squats for a total of 150.

Mumblechatter picked up discussing Buckeye’s bright orange toboggan.  Those who are right say it’s a hat, or a “knit cap” as they call it when its 4 degrees below zero in Kenosha, WI.  Others who are wrong say it’s a specific type of sled.  Clarity and consensus is impossible to come by with both sides digging in.  Regardless, YHC is fairly sure that this workout will be remembered, at least in his mind, as “the toboggan” workout.  Mosey back to the flag.

Back in the circle, we pressed on with:

  • 30 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 40 x Toe Touches (IC)
  • 30 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)

5 minutes still on the clock, and YHC was out.  Of plans, of gas, of brain activity.  Pretty much everything.  I had to call for an unprecedented 10 count in the circle before the last round of Flutter Kicks.  Done.  At this point, Buckeye and his orange toboggan came through in the clutch, with a reminder from the 1st F Q that we should incorporate stretching into our workouts when possible.  Saved.

  • 40 x Flutter Kicks (IC)

Kicked it to Buckeye for the last 4 minutes to stretch us out.

Moleskin:

My last Q at The Sandlot, discussion came up about the early days of F3 Gastonia, and how, at least in the minds of those reporting, there were more exercises and less running.  I remember during some of my few early-days posts the circle at the beginning would sometimes be longer and reps not just used as a warm up, but to push.  Not that the older was better than the new, in fact, I like what the running does to let you go see things and put on the miles while adding the variety of location.  But variety.  It’s a good thing.

Full disclosure, I reached out to Double Stuff to find some different Merkins to break out in this workout.  Needless to say, the list he sent reminded me of how much room I still have to grow.  A couple of them, I had no chance doing, as any flex in the elbow would have had me quickly collapsing to the ground.  But a couple of them I could, and so I modified a little off the list and put together a workout to give some of these things a try.  While we didn’t do a ton of reps, it’s still worth doing.  You’ve got to start somewhere.

Always a privilege to lead at TRB.  Maybe I’ll get to do it again someday.
