Crossroads 23-JAN-22

Really cold and I didn’t want to do anything since I am just getting into the swing of things from being sick.  Men put in the work with it being 20 degrees, Purple Haze doesn’t understand what flat is and Sister Acts aim is off in the cold weather.

Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night…

These were some unexpected circumstances to be sure. The weekend before, the weather peeps called for everyone to batten down the hatches and prepare for snowmageddon. This time around, they hardly even mentioned a chance of anything for our area. Well Friday evening it started snowing. And kept snowing. And kept snowing. And kept snowing until the SE part of the county had a solid 3″ of the white stuff. When YHC went to bed, it looked like the chances of making the treck to Folsom would be in danger of not happening.

5:30 came and the morning routine started like usual. YHC was thinking of how to conduct a remote Q so the PAX could get some sort of work in. What to do, what to do. When the garage door was opened and an analysis of the conditions was held, it looked a little better than expected. The road snow had settled down a litte so that it wasn’t totally white. Maybe there was a chance. When the radar seemed to indicate that the northern part of the county may not have gotten it as bad an YHC’s hood, the decision was made to give it a go. Better get on the road early so that careful slow driving could be done. Let’s do it!

After a mostly uneventful drive to the norhtern territory, YHC pulled into the Folsom area to be greeted by Balljoint running around getting in some EC. There were a few other trucks in the lot ready to get some work done. At the start time, there were 5 HIM ready to push the rock. This is what happened…

After a little chatter, it was determined that the covered picnic shelter at the bottom would be a perfet venue for what YHC had cooked up. It had light and was ice free. Excellent!

The Thang – The Frozen Deck of Death!!!

To keep moving around in the ice to a minimum, YHC picked the Deck as a good method for madness. The format was that we’d do a specific exercise per suit. It went like this:

  • Spades – Merkins
  • Diamonds – Big Boy Sit Ups
  • Hearts – Lunges
  • Clubs – Goofballs

To accompany the work, YHC broght the trusty JBL Flip for some musical vibes. Volt really appreciated most of what was played for sure. We made it all the way through the deck with enough time to give another round a go. This time it was like this:

  • Spades – CDDs – aka Def Leppard merkins in honor of the former Nantan who is on IR for the time being
  • Diamonds – LBCs
  • Hearts – Squats
  • Clubs – Plank Jacks

We finished with just barely enough time and then we headed back to the start. Way to push it men!

Prayer requests- Def Leppard’s wrist, Huck’s dad, Gumby’s back, Big Pappy’s mom, Wichita’s mom, Chloe’s tumor behind her knee

Announcements – Q School rescheduled to February 5th, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader rescheduled to May 3rd, Rooster relay in Rock Hill, Flat Rock retreat February 18-20 has 15 spots remaining

As usual, even when it’s unsure whether it’s smart to post or not, YHC was super glad he pushed the envelope to make it to the workout. We had great fellowship and mumblechatter and everyone got better. AYE!!!

Mayor Channels Eddie The Eagle

It was icy and cold at Old School this morning.   Original plans had to be scrapped so we did some work under the shelter.

Under the shelter we did:

  • Step Ups
  • Dips
  • Hillbillies
  • Merkins
  • Big Boys
  • Burpees

We did lunge walks between light posts. During one set, Mayor almost went down but had a wonderful recovery.

It was all caught on slow motion video.

Mayor’s Close Call

There was lots of great chatter with normal conversations of DDP, Purple Haze’s shoes, and deep discussions on donuts and livermush. It was morning YHC was grateful that these HIM’s made it out to the gloom.

We finished up with the Pledge and COT.

Faith, Family, Work, Serve, Fitness

It was a cold morning at Folsom but 9 HIM’s avoided the fartsack.

We took a brief mosey to the center of the lower lot. (Faith) we then ran to each corner (Family, Work, Serve, Fitness) and back to the center continually doing various at each corner

Throwing it together

Like Boudin and several of you, I have set a Q goal of 50 in 2022. That’s a little more than 4 a month. So my 2nd Q of the year comes soon after my first at the GasHouse. Work has been nuts so the one thing I had in mind was a wee bit complicated (no? you’re not surprised – maybe next year’s word will be “Simplify” ah but not this year – using “NOW” again because time management is my jester). Sorry for that tangent, back to the matters at hand. Tuesday, meeting after meeting and doing a little bit here and there on projects left little time to plan a proper Weinke. Sometimes I miss my old job…but life is a challenge. Sorry – tangent #2, I’ll get back on track (anyone have any ADD meds I can borrow?). So I scorch out of my driveway at 5:16 pm headed for the nation’s original afternoon workout. Slaw had planted his shovel flag (what a Site Q – always there – Slaw for 2023!) and a few guys were hoping around trying to stay warm in the 30 degree temps. Well, except for Gravel – dude posts as if it’s summertime – shorts and t-shirt a big middle finger to Mother Nature. For a wus like me born and raised in these parts, I’m bundled up like an expedition to the North Pole. I arrive to the circle with a minute to spare. Pockets says he is running after the warm-up and Defib says he’s only got 20 minutes before he has to leave (he did run a few miles EC). Disclaimer – be careful, modify as needed and for some, they took that disclaimer where they may as well have created their own Weinke. Oh well – it’s Midoriyama – what else is new? A Q is basically the focal point for verbal assaults. Oh – not this time – no Freight, SA, or Tool Time. I may be able to get through this without too much ridicule.

Warm-up:

  • Toy Soldiers IC x 10
  • Side to Side Lunge IC x 10
  • Imperial Walker Squats – I counted but it was in cadence. Def was all messed up on this one
  • I think I did one more but can’t recall it.
  • Pledge

Mosey – with remnants of snow on the ground, I knew I would have limited options. The parking lot across the street by the ball field looked clear – we’ll short mosey there to avoid any treacherous terrain. As we arrive, two more sets of headlights coming our way – Wirenut and Purple Haze. Impromptu SSH’s until they arrive.

We had 8 so divide into 2-man teams:

  • Set 1 – two circuits of:
  • Exercise 1: Alternating Lunges (forward, reverse, fast – doesn’t matter)
  • Exercise 2: Merkins
  • Exercise 3: American Hammers
  • Timer – last team does 10 burpees – when they finish, teams rotate to next exercise.
  • Set 2 – two circuits of:
  • Exercise 1: Jump Squats
  • Exercise 2: Hand Release Merkins
  • Exercise 3: Crunchy Frogs
  • Timer – Flying Squirrels x 10

Defib had to scoot after this one. Of course, burpees were a fan favorite. Some did the recommended exercise while others did whatever they felt like – like I said, this is Midoriyama – getting in a workout is the third option, preceded by mumble chatter and fellowship. That burned some time but next up was the escalating 4 corners. Count both legs when applicable.

  • Corner 1: 10 Plank Jacks
  • Corner 2: 10 Plank Jacks + 20 Mtn Climbers
  • Corner 3: 10 Plank Jacks + 20 Mtn Climbers + 30 SSH
  • Corner 4: 10 Plank Jacks + 20 Mtn Climbers + 30 SSH + 40 Flutters
  • The PAX had been patiently waiting for the complication and it begins with de-escalating. Stay at corner 4 and take it down. Thankfully Broke was there to translate. Hey it’s Midoriyama – they’re not known for math skills.

A little more time and the Weinke has run out of words. Improvise like I know what I’m doing…ah, 11’s with 10 Imperial Walker Squats – more for entertainment by Def Leppard’s form than anything else. Pockets re-joined after his run was complete. 1 LBC on the other side of the parking lot. Not much of a push by this group at this point but the chatter was good. With a few minutes left, we moseyed across to home base. I thew a few core exercises at the pax on a 30 second timer. Effort was minimal and the form was awful, but chatter was strong.

Announcements – QSchool – watch for rescheduled date; relays; Prayers: Huck’s dad, and there were some others.

No moleskin – just happy to have the opportunity to lead and participate. Until the next one.

Short Sale

Winter wonder land. And tights.

Cold. Slippery. Snowy.

six shooters. Pull ups. Hammers. Lunges. Good group. Tiger has a tight fetish, maybe to strong of a word. Obsession, maybe. Someone mentioned it was like an eclipse. Tesla leaves nothing to the imagination. For being from LA, Boudin sure likes to exercise in the snow. Burpees make Rebar’s cloths come off. Brutus can’t feel his legs, or at least that’s the impression the pax got as he was wearing shorts – 20 degrees out side.  Cpap flew under the radar. Bubba Sparks demonstrated a second option for wearing tights.   No stupid shuffle as the stupid ground was to slippery.

Frozen Folsom 1/18/2022

With the recent winter weather, all of Folsom was under snow or ice.  10 men overcome the temptation to fart sack and posted at Folsom.

Warmup:

SSH, Gravel Pickers, Hillbillies

With all the ice, we didn’t go far from the COT for the entire workout.  First routine we stayed in place for a lil Pandemic!  3 exercises called, Burpees, Mountain Climbers, Sit-Ups.  Start with 1 Burpee, 2 MC, 3 Sit-ups.  Then 2 Burpees, 4 MC, 6 Sit-ups.  Continue this until you finish with 10 Burpees, 20 MC, 30 Sit-ups.  That got the blood flowing!

Short mosey to snow covered soccer field beside tennis courts. 4 Corner Escalator called.  1st corner 10 Hand Release Merkins.  Mosey to 2nd corner 10 HR Merkins, 20 Jump Lunges. Mosey to 3rd corner 10 HR Merkins, 20 Jump Lunges, 30 Plank Jacks.  Mosey to last corner 10 HR Merkins, 20 Jump Lunges, 30 Plank Jacks, 40 Flutter Kicks.  Stay in place, now time to head back down.  40 Flutter Kicks, 30 Plank Jacks, 20 Jump Lunges, 10 HR Merkins.  Mosey to next corner for 30 Plank Jacks,20 Jump Lunges, 10 HR Merkins.  Mosey to next corner for 20 Jump Lunges, 10 HR Merkins.  Mosey to last corner for 10 HR Merkins. That was a lot of Jump Lunges in the snow.  Especially for those that wore snow boots.  My legs still feel that one.

Short walk back to COT.  Last routine called is one from the F3 Grand Strand area. Named after an F3 brother who lost his life in the line of duty.  Called “The Hightower”.  It’s one of my favorites and it’s brutal.  Definitely look it up. Goes like this:

5 exercises, 9 reps each

1). 9 Burpees

2). 9 Body Builders – Burpee with Plank Jack

3). 9 Triple Merkin Burpees – Burpee with 3 Hand Release Merkins

4). 9 Triple Jump Squat Burpee – Burpee with 3 Jump Squats

5). 9 Putting Them All Together – Triple Merkin Triple Jump Squat Bodybuilders – Burpee with 3 HR Merkins, Plank Jack, 3 Jump Squats

That routine is awful.  By the 5th exercise, you are completely smoked and have to give it all you got to finish!  Time

Midoriyama 1/20

Four Pax gathered in spite of a little rain and cold.  It is a metaphor for life, you have to be willing to do what it takes regardless of the conditions.

Time hits, start to mosey, Haze coming in hot, stop for some SSH to give him to join.  Mosey to the pavilion.  In consideration of elevation gain at smokey mountain relay, and having half way participated in Chad 1000, Q calls for 500 step ups on the benches of the picnic tables.  Let’s go.

Finished with enough time left for rounds of 10 15 and 20 dips and derkins.  Mosey back to start.

Announcements:  Q school re-scheduled from Saturday, retreat has spots remaining, Rice n Beans Tuesday evenings

PAX Q

It was a day unlike any other. The Gastonia area actually got the predicted snow, kids and parents alike had tons of fun and all was right with the world. With all the icy weather Flintstone made the decision to move the regularly scheduled Monday workout from am to pm. On top of that, the scheduled Q couldn’t make the new time so reinforcements were called in. This is what happened…

YHC got to the AO early to scout things out. There was still lots of ice around and it was wet too. Now some HIM might throw caution to the wind and go splashing through some half frozen puddles like a school kid. Not this guy, we took the mature route and headed to the nice dry abandoned bank drive through. It was perfect.

Because YHC felt like mixing things up, a delegated workout from the PAX was in order. When YHC asked for any suggestions, Broke spoke up and offered

The Covid WOD

  • 25 burpees
  • 1 round of
    • 19 Crisscrosses IC or something like that. Actually, they looked a lot like Jingle Balls
    • 19 Imperial Squat Walkers IC (Sargento style)
    • 19 Oblique crunches each side IC
    • 19 V-Ups OYO – This is where Def Leppard did a sneak attack and sucker punched Defib in the gut! Watch you back men!
    • 19 Diamond Merkins OYO
    • Lunge walk from one end of the drive thru and back
  • Repeato x3

After this Flintstone offered up some partner work where one person exercised whilst the other held plank and you switched back and forth whenever you wanted. The idea was to do this for 2 minutes. We did Merkins (stupid) and other stuff. It sucked and he won’t be called on to lead this again.

At this point time pretty much ran out so we carefully moseyed back to the start, said the pledge and wrapped it up.

Remember our theme for the year, Always Be EHing!!!

Prayer requests: Gumby’s back, Huck’s dad, Mayor’s M, Big Pappy’s mom,

Announcements: Q School has been rescheduled for February 5th, Flat Rock retreat only has 15 spots remaining

Thanks for the impomptu opportunity to lead men. Aye!
