Fitness, Fellowship, Faith

Month: December 2021 (Page 8 of 11)

Never Underestimate the Power of God

O’ the places we went, the things we saw

A good time surely was had by all

We had warm-up and a workout and some Mary to end

But the fellowship we share is the best time to lend

No, it’s not easy, nor should it be

For the best things in life are never free

We saw a speech when it all was put to rest

To remind the Him’s, that God can use whatever is your best

God can do great things with what we think is not much

Just give Him the chance, He will change it bunch

After the workout I showed the video below of Ernie Johnson Jr.’ speech to the Alabama football team at the beginning of the football season.  The lame rhyme above is due to Ernie Johnon commencement address at the Univ of Georgia 2017 Spring commencement where he created a commencement rhyme from Dr Seuss’ O The Places You’ll Go.

There are many life lessons in the five-minute excerpt  included, but to me there is one overriding message:  Trust God with whatever you have, no matter how little or how much, He will multiply in ways that will impact a bunch.

Prayers for Broke’s mom and family, Tiger’s M and stepsons, those who struggle in the holiday season

Rinse & Repeat but Different

Twelve joined YHC when the clock arrived at 0530.  (Technically eleven, Tesla as late, I guess that what happens when you get um… cough… well… anyway…)

Start off with The Pledge of Allegiance, then into warmup.

Arm Stretches, both arms.
Arm Circles
That thing where you are in a plank and put R Foot to R Hand…

Pause for Flintstone to put on his other shoe (that was in his car before this point)?!?

Let’s mosey to Davis Park.

YHC has planned to use the darker (is that possible a Tequila Sunrise), longer part of the parking lot, but it was parked solid with paving equipment, so the we had to settle for the short hillier (is that word) section.

Partner Up

P1 runs to the light and back, P2 lunges toward the light.  When they meet, switch.

Basically that idea is how it went for the rest of the time.

Modes of transportation used in addition to lunge:

Bear Crawl
Side Lunge
Reverse Lunge

Exercises done either at every spot or every line or every other line:

Squats & Calf Raises
CDDs
Merkins
Monkey Humpers
Drinking Birds
Burpees
Maybe one more,

LBCs were suggested, but vetoed initially.

Mosey back to the school and managed to fit a few LBCs to finish the time.

Thanks for being there (this morning) and for me.

Watts Up Powering Down.

Lead with the Jab

There was some hating on your boy this morning.  Let’s start there.  At the end of the workout, there was some iron sharpened I guess you could say.
Comment #1 – When mentioning my next Q, “maybe we can get a real workout then
Comment #2 – “I didn’t get a heart rate until the very end”
Comment #3 – “I haven’t been at a boot camp in a while so I wanted to come to your Q and ease back into it”
Comment #4 – “There was a lot of running for you”

You could feel the love.

Here is the work.  Sargento had some cancer removed so he was on IR, but came out to support us and went where we did, but had to take it easier. We had music so he carried the load.

John Basilone

*Article from the Marine Times by JD Simkins in 2018

John Basilone served three years in the Army during the 1930s and become a boxing champion, but it wouldn’t be until he enlisted in the Marine Corps — and the country’s subsequent plunge into World War II — that he would reach mythical standing.

On the night of October 24, 1942, in the jungles of Guadalcanal, one of the hundreds of islands that comprise the Solomons, then-Sgt. Basilone was commanding two heavy .30-caliber machine gun sections from First Battalion, Seventh Marines, that were tasked with holding a narrow pass at the Tenaru River.

As the small crews of Marines dug in for the night, a Japanese regiment numbering 3,000 men attacked the line, hammering the Marines with grenades and mortar fire. Wave after wave were kept at bay by the small teams of Marines, until one of the gun crews was disabled by enemy fire.

3000 LBC’S – split between the PAX

With total disregard for his own life, Basilone carried about 90 pounds of weaponry and ammunition to the silenced gun pit, running a distance of 200 yards through enemy fire and encountering Japanese soldiers along the route, who he killed with his Colt .45 pistol.

Basilone continued running back and forth between gun pits, supplying ammunition to those desperately in need and clearing gun jams for his junior Marines.

Amidst the carnage, Basilone lost his asbestos gloves, hand protection critical for holding or swapping out the scalding hot barrels of the heavily used machine guns.

During the height of the battle, Basilone barehanded the searing barrel of his machine gun without hesitation and continued putting rounds downrange, killing an entire wave of Japanese soldiers and burning his hands and arms in the process.

Enemy bodies were (literally) piling up so rapidly that he had to vacate their defensive positions to knock over the growing wall of flesh so they could reestablish clear fields of fire.

An entire Japanese regiment was thwarted by the gun crews, and by the time reinforcements arrived, only Basilone and two other Marines were left standing. Basilone used his crews’ machine guns, his pistol and a machete to kill enemy soldiers.

Pfc. Nash W. Phillips was with Basilone on Guadalcanal and recounted the other-worldly efforts of his sergeant.
“Basilone had a machine gun on the go for three days and nights without sleep, rest or food,” said Phillips, who lost a hand in the fight.

While receiving medical treatment, Phillips recalled Basilone’s mythical appearance as he came to check on him.
“He was barefooted and his eyes were red as fire,” he said. “His face was dirty black from gunfire and lack of sleep. His shirt sleeves were rolled up to his shoulders. He had a .45 tucked into the waistband of his trousers. He’d just dropped by to see how I was making out; me and the others in the section. I’ll never forget him. He’ll never be dead in my mind!”

Basilone would go on to be awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his actions on Guadalcanal. He returned to the U.S. to assist the war bond effort — and was offered a commission and the chance to spend the rest of the war in Washington.
He turned the offer down, forgoing the public attention being a war hero and opting instead to return to combat.

On February 19, 1945, Basilone stormed Red Beach on Iwo Jima. Pinned down by enemy machine gun fire, he led his gunners up the steep black sand, kicking his inexperienced Marines to get off the beach as they hugged the ground for cover. Minutes after destroying a Japanese blockhouse, Basilone and four members of his platoon were killed when an enemy artillery shell exploded. He was 28 years old.

Rice n Beans 12/07

We had a few help at Rice n Beans in Charlotte.  Roscoe and his family, along with Termite, Breaker Breaker, Paperback Writer, Hey Jude and Tiger.

Amazing that when you set out to help others they often help you.  Give the gift of self.

The Gastonia launch if Rice n Beans is roughly a month away if all goes to plan.  We will have opportunity to play significant role.

Concentrica

Disclaimer, Pledge, Warmup: 10 SSH, Squats, Merkins then quick ‘splanation of plan: Theme would be Concentrica-reminder that the old guys here have probably heard this and jump in anytime to add to the discussion. Mosey down the hill to the parking lot with a turn around. We ran a few laps around this circle with a quick discussion of what the Concentrica is: think of archer’s target with 5 circles-closest is what you should be aiming for most often-this is your M. Next ring is your Shorties-they need to know that M is top priority but they are right behind. Next 2 rings are you guys-Shieldlock and Whetstone. Outermost ring is work or Mammon and should be least important in your list of priorities but often is not the case. This does not mean “don’t spend time on outer rings” but really just means MORE OFTEN you should be focusing your time (or arrows to keep with the archer theme) on the center rings, realizing you never know when you will run out of arrows (or time). Next we moseyed back to start for some more reminders of the Concentrica-split into groups of 5 and each group would run to end of lot and back while rest of group would do an exercise with letter starting with M (for M), S (for Shorties), S (for shieldlock), B (for Blade), and M (for Mammon). The exercises were the following: Monkey Humpers, Spatchcock, SSH, Big Boy setups, and Mountain Climbers…..better on paper the night before so got thru this quickly. Move on to the wall at the school for few sets of Hip Slappers…..just cause there is a good wall and……..why not? Mosey to baseball field-thanks for leading the way Seuss. Step ups and Mountain Climbers then came the fun. Get on the line, 10 Flying Squirrels then 10 lunges. 15 Flying Squirrels then 15 lunges, 20 FS then 20 Lunges, 25 FS then 25 lunges. We stood there for a minute or so while I let everyone think I was going to Omaha…not a chance. Gimme 10 more FS……then 10 more FS…….then 10 more FS…….then 10 more FS. We either did 40 or 50, I am not sure, then moseyed back to start for Mary with max of 5 reps and everyone took a turn. Had enough, time was up. Finish with COT-lot of prayers, Christmas Party, family member. Good time this am getting back out here-Storm never disappoints so thanks for the guys for showing up and putting in some work. Final word-Focus on the M. She is your most important relationship and when you commit relationship malpractice (as Dredd puts it), everything else will fall apart. If you have not experienced this, you have probably seen it. ESPECIALLY during this time of the year, take some time and spend it with your M showing her the love and respect she deserves and needs. It is time well spent.

thanks-Whoopee

We first mosey up to the soccer field, stopping at the transformers for our 1st set. With an ample amount of mublechatter we start our next mosey around the field stopping at the same spot for our next set. On this mosey is where the dog poo comes in. When we started this mosey, the chatter was about a movie(Something about Mary) and we almost stepped in a BIG pile on the side walk. After set 2 we start another mosey, since Oompa couldn’t let the poo lie there, He cleaned it up as we moseyed on to the next stop. We stopped at the playground for the 3rd set.  From there we continued down to the stop sign for set 4. Then moseyed around the lot stopping at a light pole for set 5. Mosey back to the start and finish our last set. With 5 min left we do some ab Mary.
