Respect and Discipline

12/11/2018 The Storm
9 strong at the icy Storm this morning. Breaker Breaker called for Q’s a while back so I signed up for one not knowing “The Storm” would be icy but we made it work.
Disclaimer: Be careful because it is slippery.
Warm Up: SSH x 15 IC, Cotton Pickers x 15 IC, Low Slow Squats (Tesla told me they are also called Copperhead Squats) x 15 IC, 5 Burpees OYO (I hate those)
Pledge
I usually will have a topic or a verse that I will talk about during my Q and today it was a repeat of a favorite and appropriate for the morning. I couldn’t help but notice 7 of our 9 HIM’s were “Respects”. I know everyone has a lot going on this time of year, including you younger guys, but don’t forget to make time to post as much as possible during this holiday and winter season. It is much easier to stay in shape than to try to get it back in January or the Spring. One reason I try to Q is to push myself to stay after it and sometimes I will use my age as an excuse to not push myself. It was great to see so many guys “our age” and older getting after it, and on that note, I read a word from Jocko Willink about Darkness…
“The sun doesn’t shine every day. The storms will come. There are times when the nights
will be long and dark and you will be alone. There will be times when The Darkness
seems to consume everything. But don’t let it consume you.
Don’t let it consume you. Even in the darkest times. Even in the strongest storms. Even
when the sun is blotted out and the world is falling apart.
The Darkness cannot extinguish your light.
You. Your WILL. Your determination. No matter what is happening—no matter how hard
the fight is. As long as you keep fighting—you win.
Only surrender is defeat. Only quitting is the end. Because The Darkness only wins if you let it.
Do not let The Darkness win.
Fight. Fight On. To fight against The Darkness is to win. Fight On.”

BLIMPS
Burpees x 5, run to the school and back.
Lunges x 10, Burpees x 5, run to the school and back.
Imperial Walkers x 15 (Oops, I was doing Hillbillies), Lunges x 10, Burpees x 5, run to the school and back.
Merkins x 20, Imperial Walkers x 15, Lunges x 10, Burpees x 5, run to the school and back.
Plank Jacks x 25, Merkins x 20, Imperial Walkers x 15, Lunges x 10, Burpees x 5, run to the school and back.
Squats x 30, Plank Jacks x 25, Merkins x 20, Imperial Walkers x 15, Lunges x 10, Burpees x 5, follow me, slipping and a sliding to a well-lit lower parking lot where coupons awaited.

BLOCKS
I went by my boy Slaw’s mancave last night to borrow his well-used half blocks. He did say there would be a 20 burpee penalty if anyone broke another of his blocks as I believe the Folsom boys broke a few the last time they were used. I am happy to report no broken blocks.
Curls x 30 Single Count, On Your Six Chest Presses x 30 Single Count, Shrugs x 30 Single Count (my form was questioned by a certain Canoe but I persevered).
Repeat. Curls x 30 Single Count, On Your Six Chest Presses x 30 Single Count, Shrugs x 30 Single Count.
30 more Curls “for the girls” I believe Buckeye said and then mosey back to the school building sidewalk which was the least icy place I could find for everybody’s favorite.

REDUCING TIME SPRINTS
Timer set up for 11 seconds with 8 second rest for 3 reps, then 10 seconds with 8 second rest, then 9, etc. We all pretty much made it about the same amount but Buckeye and Sister Act (the young’uns) were leading the way. Back to the flag.
End Up with 10 Burpees OYO. Nameorama.
More From Jocko Willink…Excerpts from Discipline Equals Freedom
“Don’t worry about motivation. Motivation is fickle. It comes and goes. It is unreliable and when
you are counting on motivation to get your goals accomplished—you will likely fall short.
So. Don’t expect to be motivated every day to get out there and make things happen. You
won’t be. Don’t count on motivation. Count on Discipline.
You know what you have to do.
So: MAKE YOURSELF DO IT. You do that with Discipline.
It happens in the darkness of the early morning. In solitude. Where I try. And I try.
And I try again. With everything I have, to be the best that I can possibly be.
Better than I was yesterday. Better than people thought I could be. Better than I
thought I could be. Faster and stronger and smarter.
And claim one victory that no one can ever take away from me. Ever. A victory that is earned
every single day. A victory of determination and will and discipline.
A victory achieved because: I will not stop.”

COT

Bulldog party of two…

I am fairly new to F3 so when HIPAA asked/ informed me that I was going to Q I was a little nervous, but excited about the opportunity.    Little did we know that Mother Nature would make it that much more difficult to get out of the fartsack on a cold icy morning.

HIPAA and I showed and I knew what I had planned would be super fun for just two of us…so we got after it.

Pledge

Pain Cards

It was a cold Friday morning no fng’s so let’s get moving.
Warm up
Ssh,windmills,cherry pickers,low slow squats.
Mosey down to Franklin square for some monkey humpers. Then mosey to the parking deck. Each Pax chose two cards we did one card at the bottom then the other card at the top of the parking deck.10 cards total. After that mosey back to the rotary when we stopped at the light to bear crawl, this got some mumble chatter. So why not do 20 burpees after that. Some time left so we did some Mary and a short mosey to complete a mile of running.
Prayers for our families and each other. Prayers for MW’s father in law having triple bypass surgery.

Just The Two of Us

It was just Volt and I this morning. He was already at it when I got there at 5:25 so we did a quick warmup and I scrapped the weinke, deciding to just run up and down the main road of Folsom since it was the safest part of the park. Volt got about 3.5 miles with his EC,YHC was just under 3.

We prayed for families with strain and loss at Christmas.

Folsom, you’re in a dark place right now. Trust me, I know,I have been there. We have all been there. The bed feels a little warmer. The eyes feel a little heavier. That V is a little more sandy. I am here for you! Come back friends!

Missed Opportunities

Sadly, it’s been a while since YHC had Q at a boot camp workout. With his creativity a little rusty, YHC figured he’d build a weinke based on his new found love (or strong like) at The Pub. That would be running…

Warm-up
SSH x 15
LBC x 15
Imperial Walkers x 15
Merkins x 15

Pledge

Pain Lab stuck around for the beatdown from Montross. The rest of us went on a mosey to the Grier track

Run half lap and do 10 single count LBC
Run half lap and do 10 single count American Hammers (count left side only)
Rinse and repeat with 20 single count LBC / 20 single count American Hammers
Rinse and repeat with 30 single count LBC / 30 single count American Hammers
Rinse and repeat with only 20 LBC but in cadence / 20 American Hammers also in cadence (At least we didn’t do 40 of each exercise, that would be cruel.)

Mosey to the Grier parking lot
Line up at the first speed bump
Lunge to the next speed bump where the PAX would stop and do 10 Merkins
Think that YHC called for LBCs when we got there, but the PAX stayed with the Merkins originally called (Missed opportunity)
During this time, the mumble chatter was strong so YHC may have been distracted.
Lunge to the next speed bump where the PAX would stop and do 10 Merkins

Mosey to Sherwood track with a detour up the steps at FPC and down the hill.

With Christmas around the corner, it seems like a good time to insert a 12 Days of Christmas theme.

Partner up
One partner mosey one direction on the track; the other partner mosey in the other direction
Meet on the other side of the track; 2 Partner Merkins
Mosey back to the other side of the track for 4 Partner Merkins.
Rinse and repeat for 6, 8, 10, and 12 Merkins
12, 12 Days of Christmas, makes sense, right?
Although that got us to 12, we skipped one of the most important numbers in the song
So one more trip and back on the track with 5 BUR-UR-PEES (you just sang that in your head) on each side

Mosey back to FPC, up the hill, past The Pad, and stop at the benches.

Step Ups x 20
Dips x 15
Step Ups x 20
Dips x 20
Flutter Kicks x 50

Mosey back past the pad, down the hill, and around the back of FPC.

Zig-zag through the parking lot and stop at the back of the building for 10 Merkins.

Mosey back to the Schiele

We returned a few minutes before 0800 where it looked like the Pain Lab PAX were getting a head start on Coffeerama

As a combined group, quick round of Mary

Bandit – Monkey Humpers
Moses – Cotton Pickers
Roscoe – Dying Cockroaches
Hipaa – Burpees (5 of them, so sing that in your head again; 5 BUR-UR-PEES)

Close in Prayer

Moleskin
During the mumble chatter as we lunged through the parking lot at Grier, platitudes from coaches were somehow brought up. One that was brought up was Ron Rivera’s use of “missed opportunities” (even more apparent a day later after a fifth straight loss). Mayor’s prayer request during the COT made YHC think deeper about what missed opportunities really are. Don’t miss out on opportunities to show love and encouragement to those who are struggling. It could be mental illness, the loss of a loved one, or a host of problems. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to call your family to check on them or talk to your 2.0’s while they’re still young enough to listen.

That night after the workout, YHC and the family watched “Miracle.” I don’t know whether or not Herb Brooks said this, but I know that Kurt Russell did. That is good enough. “Great moments are born from great opportunities.” Every member of F3 Gastonia has been given great opportunities to make a difference, and YHC prays that we seize every chance to be a true HIM. And to God be the glory when we do.

Until next time…

Venom @ Midoriyama

As time was nearing  I noticed that the announcement of the venom clan’s debut must have scared many PAX.  Or it was cold?  With that we started. I had no plan of a warmup but with the presence of a once in a while visit from one HIM we did some Goofballs In cadence.

The five deadly venom beat down.

Centipede style.   Nickname is “Thousand hands”   Well known for his quick moves. Let’s work on our upper body.

CDD, Over Head claps, Merkins, Moroccan night clubs, dips.

Snake style.  The snake spirit.  Famous for his responsive moves. The head moves and the tail reacts. Let’s do some combination work. (I’m not sure what I was thinking on a couple of these)

Crunchy Frog, Mnt Climbers, v up roll up, Nolan Ryans, WW1.

Scorpion Style. The feet move as a scorpions. Let’s work our legs some.

Squats, skater squats, 1 leg deadlift,   Toy Soldiers, Hill Billy.

Lizard style. He trained to have a light body and strong legs. So he could crawl with ease. Also made use of his rebound force. Let’s do some wall work. I did forget to put in a fifth exercise here. It was supposed to be Australian mnt climbers.

Wall merkin, hip slapper, glute bridges, plank to hands,

Toad style.  Is very strong. When properly used it is nearly invincible. It can even bend raw iron. Let’s do some total body work.

Pull ups, Burpees, lunges, merkin, squat.

After 5 reps of each exercise we are to run down the parking lot and back. Rinse and  repeat.

With plenty of mumblechatter,  a few deer and bike riders, also a couple of police out. It made for a fun evening. Thanks guys 👊👊👊

Smokefest at The Yank Tesla’s Way.

So YHC got a note that nobody was up at The Yank on Saturday from The Nantan which was a REAL head scratcher! If nobody is in that always defaults to the oldest pax in the region – Tesla! Having just turned 59 Monday it became incumbent on YHC to have a true beatdown ready to roll in the gloom of a Saturday in December. Especially with the dreaded winter storm approaching we simply could not make this a walk through. So it went like this:

COP by The Yank

SSH X 20

IW X 20

Right foot right hand stretch, Left foot left hand flapjack.

Mosey to the Hawthorne Hill. We have not been there for quite sometime so it was time for a little hill work.

Partner up. P1 runs to the top and returns and picks up P2 on the teamwork called moves as follows:

Merkins X 100

CDDS X 200

Squats X 300

LBCs X 400

By my count everybody got at least 4 trips up and down the hill which is always a challenge. Not much mumble chatter. This got us to @ 7:30 real easy!

Mosey back to the AO and hit the Field of Dreams for the signature Tesla call: Bear Crawl Slalom. Everybody got two rounds to the end of the field.

SSH X 10

Turkish Getups X 5

Return via agility drill.

Orangeman cam up with the TGs here! All credit to him! As I have said the art of great leadership is in the delegation of tasks and the faith to accept the results of the outcome! The pax did not appreciate this. But YHC did.

Mosey down to Wonderland (the playground) for some activity as such:

10 diamond merkins

10 step ups each leg

10 dirkins

Time for a gut check to finish up with, Triple Nickel on Heartbreak Hill!

Bottom: Bupees X 5

Top: Jump Squats X 5

This pretty well got us to the end with a little short Mary on the pad. Pax was pretty well spent as planned!

NMM:

Great work by everyone especially Top Hat! We need to find you some quality PT brother and get that hamstring/calf better first quarter of next year. I am going to suggest my old buddy Scott Greenapple in Charlotte. We’ll talk soon about that. And Freon found his way down from Mt. Holly! Welcome to The Yank Brother!

Was a great day out there. Little overcast and @ 43 degrees. Great “push it” weather. Don’t think any AO worked harder than we did and that was the intent. This was Tesla’s last lead at The Yank this year. 2.0 in and duck hunts every Saturday until January. Convergence next week at Gas House. Christmas party at Quiche’s Saturday night. May need some help setting up Friday. Dirt up the 22nd and Orangeman the 29th.

Been a Great Year at The Yank! Looking back at what we did is really fulfilling. The July 4th special session was awesome and will be continued as a tradition in Belmont of reading the Declaration and having local clergy say a few words was the best in my mind. We had real impact in real time that day which is what we are ultimately all about. Let’s keep pushing the rock and expand our fold!

Putting the Pain in Painlab

I love working out in the friendly confines of Folsom, but it is always fun to step across 74 from time to time. Painlab is a great way to mix it up for me. It gives my hip a break and also works on my soccer arms. We don’t have fancy kettlebells and equiqment at Folsom, we use good ol’ concrete blocks. So I loaded a few in the family truckster before an auto-mosey over to the Schiele.

After the warmup and disclaimer from JJ, 11..errrrr..13 PAX stroll over to the normal Painlab spot for a block party.

YHC kept it simple. 20 to 1 block work…overhead presses, curls (for the girls), overhead tricep extensions, and chest presses (on your back). As Mayor sat his block down, I let everyone know 5 burpees OYO everytime you set the block down, then rejoin the group. Got Eeeem! Several including YHC took advantage of this “opportunity” throughout the workout!

20 of each, 19 of each, 18 of each…set your blocks down for ab work.

20 LBCs in cadence
10 Rosalitas in cadence (these were a crowd pleaser!!!!)

Pick up the blocks, 17, 16, 15, 14 of each exercise. Set them down.

Repeat LBCs and Rosalitas in cadence.

Pick up the blocks, 13, 12, 11, and 10 of each exercise, put the blocks down.

I hand off to Rudolph for shadow boxing. Frankly, I was most excited about this!!! I took mental notes because I want to do this myself down the road. Nice cardio work!!!!! The Mike Tyson Punchout music was spot-on as well. Thanks Rudolph!!!

Time was running short. I omaha the blocks because I have a special surprise left. Ooooooohhhh yeah….

Captain Thor!
1 WW1, 2 American Hammers in cadence
2 WW1, 4 American Hammers in cadence
3 WW1, 6 American Hammers in cadence
4 WW1, 8 American Hammers in cadence
5 WW1, 10 American Hammers in cadence
6 WW1, 12 American Hammers in cadence
7 WW1, 14 American Hammers in cadence
8 WW1, …..Omaha, time! PAX were tapping out left and right amd YHC didnt think he had 16 hammers in cadence left!

Everyone grab a block and fellowship mosey to my car. We rejoined the bootcamp guys for COT.

Great job put there guys. Saw some newer guys out there, had a Kotter (Huck, LOL), and a many regulars. All guys were busting their ass out there. Much respect!!!!

Best thing I saw though was HIPAA helping a PAX with his block so he didnt have to put it on the ground. Guys were giving me hell and lifting each other….it was F3 at it’s finest!

Thanks for the opportunity. I q’d “over my head” today and you guys drove me to make it through!

Day 28

Men we are on day 28 of the 40 day spiritual challenge – reading the book of Proverbs and Ecclesiastes.  Remember that we have 43 chapters total in 40 days, so you need to double up three days.

I hope you are finding the words of Proverbs to be uplifting and encouraging.  I know I can insert my name in many verses that speak of “folly” and “wicked”.  Truly the wise do their best to be humble, disciplined, slow to anger, and free of malicious intent.

Remember too the Pax you pulled from the bucket.  If you didn’t pull a name, then pick a brother and pray for him and his family for a week or two.  You can’t underestimate the power of God to move mountains.

“Blessed is the man who listens to me, watching daily at my doors, waiting at my doorway, For whoever finds me finds life and receives favor from the Lord”
