Collective Leadership

5 PAX ginned up some collective leadership in the absence of a Q at the Storm this morning. After Monk offered a slimmed down, stupid disclaimer, we realized that Discount 2X Check’s brother was an FNG, and gave a real disclaimer.

We had started the warm-up with SSH & Merks when Madoff rolled in; we welcomed him with Monkey Humpers, then Toy Soldiers.

Thang: Mosey to p lot near the weight room for two sets of Elevens: #1 LBC’s and Merkins running the full width of the p lot; #2 squats & hip slappers w/ short run from median to the building. Then zombie walk the width of the p lot, mosey round the lot, stopping for some dips halfway. Sprint the last width and return to start. A few minutes of Mary included the protractor, dying cockroaches, WWII sit ups.

Pledge

FNG Jason Tore sells insurance with DDC, so we named him Flo!

Announced Xmas party at Whoopies and forgot all the other announcements; go check the weekly blast!! Prayer requests & COT.

Global Warming in full effect

3 bundled up pax and 1 t-shirted and shorts pax entered the global warmed 18 degree morning beatdown at Folsom. No time to stand still in the cold the pax came in ready to get moving. No fng’s and YHC felt like if you were here in these temps, then it was a given that we were all off in the head. So let’s get this thang going.

warmup: SSH, Hillbillys, Don Quixote, Cherry Pickers all done 15 IC.

Thang

Mosey long way to the parking lot by the pond below the baseball fields. Here we started with bear crawl 3 spaces then 5 merkins to the end then return. YHC heard a bit of mumble chatter here something about this being stupid, and I’m sure all of our fingers were frozen. Short mosey to the next parking lot where someone mentioned that was the kind of mosey they liked. Little did the pax know that we were going to make up for that short mosey. A little Dora-ish exercise (thanks for the idea Huck) was about to be dealt. Partner up and while P1 runs laps around the parking lot P2 exercises. Once P2 is done, P1 starts his while P2 runs laps. Each pax finished 100 merkins, 200 lbc’s and 300 mountain climbers and 6 laps. Shortly after the start of this set YHC started shedding a couple of the sweatshirts following the lead of Freight after the bearcrawls. The mumble chatter continued and so did the frozen fingers. After the short mosey to the Folsom Hill we did 10 big boy situps at top, run down the hill for 10 squats and bernie sanders or nur as I was told it was called at some other AO’s.(at least 1 of the pax felt like a nur could come in handy in a bad situation LOL) Repeat 3x OYO. Another short mosey to the bottom shelter and here we get 2 sets of step ups, dips, and derkins all done 15 IC. With the exception of the last set of derkins.(we did 10 IC) YHC’s shoulders were done. Mosey to the amphitheater for some donkey kicks and hip slappers x10 OYO. Time nearly up so we sprint AYG back to start for 22 merkins for the vets and pledge.

COT:Announcements, Men’s retreat at Snowbird in March, Gashouse convergence next Saturday at the Schiele  December 17th , after Christmas party January 7th. Prayer request BOM: YHC took us out.

Awesome work today by all, thanks for the opportunity to lead, it’s an privilege and honor.

Fog of war

The Gloom was a bit more Gloomy than usual. No rain for months, and finally 3 days of rain brought in a layer of fog over Martha’s house that did not lend itself to road running.  I arrived to find 5 Pax waiting for the DRP With #6 sliding in at 5:30. I wanted to fartsack.  My stomach was upset and I knew counting would be the most challenging part of my morning.

Disclaimer: I’m an idiot, i’m not a professional, if you follow me your an idiot and if you get hurt there is no one to sue.  Modify as needed.  I feel like crap and I hope when we are done you feel like crap too. . .In a good way.

Warmup: Mosey to the bank parking lot for some Plank-o-rama: Peter parker x 20ic, right arm/left arm up, Shoulder taps x 20ic, recover.  Then some Hillbilly’s x 20ic.  I shared with the pax my memories of some high impact folks from the greatest generation that really impacted me.  Loyd and Lila Emmonds. Met in the Navy during WW2.  She was a nurse and he a chaplain and a SeaBee.  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seabee).  When I met Loyd he was nearly 86 years old and still had the energy of someone half his age.  He went to the gym, taught the children’s church classes and they would both work in the yard on church clean-up days with the best of us.  He picked up the food for the church food ministry and helped on distribution days.  His nickname was “Mr. Wonderful” and for good reason, he was always full of life and happiness.  I shared with the Pax that the most memorable thing I noticed about Loyd and Lila, and especially Loyd, is that the older he got, the more dependence he had in Christ’s love for him.  He did not grow old telling folks of himself, or of what he did for the Lord, or what you should do, but what Christ had done for him. With a tear in his eye, Christ love for all of us was evident in every tale he shared.

Tha thang: Mosey to the chicken bucket to pick up some Q-pons (rip rap from the hillside) and then to the old Teeter parking lot. I thought about doing BOMBs with rocks but thought that might be in bad taste considering the date so I called on some Dora 123. 100 overhead presses with the rock, 200 curls with 2 rocks, 300 squats holding rocks, in aggregate while partner runs to mid point of lot and back.  Once completed we moseyed to the wall for some more fun.

On the wall: Peoples Chair with rock on the lap while pax counted to 10, then out in front for 10, then overhead for 10, then press for 10, then recover. on your 6, flutter kicks, then LBC’s while pax counted to high numbers like 40, then Merkins in cadence X 10.  Wash, rinse, repeat.  We mixed in some Dying cockroaches and box cutters, then repeato for a 3rd time.

Mosey back to the Dora point and piled up the rocks, and with 7 minutes to go, YHC called something he regretted.  Lunch walk the short straight away of the lot, jog the long straightaway, then lunge the short, mosey the back.  Mumble chatter was starting to pick up at this point. With 1 full lap around and 4 minutes to go, what was left to do but repeato? As I lunged the straightaway I heard some mumble about burnt hushpuppy’s, out for vengeance, or something. Not sure what all that was about.

Return the rocks to the chicken bucket and back to the start for COT.

Announcements: Convergence on the 17th, prayer requests not many mentioned but many prayers needed around the Gashouse.  Honored to be with these men in the gloom.

23 degrees and summer practice

This week I heard the song We Will Rock you and it reminded me of high school football and those summer practices that brought me so much pain and pleasure. This song provided the necessary push for me to get my weinke together before this morning. Summer football practice was a great time for me. At least in my mind, I was a pretty big deal at my high school when it came to football. Just don’t ask my M-she was not there and my memory is a whole lot better than the actual truth so if you ask me sometime, I won’t confuse you with the facts. F3 has been the closest thing to summer football practice for me since high school. For the first few months of F3 it is how I explained what F3 was for me when talking about F3 at work. Most of my co-workers would just nod and smile then change the subject. Clearly there is something wrong with them….Here is what we did:

WU: 10 IC SSH, Squats, LBCs, Mountain Climbers, Flutter Kicks, Merkins, (I think) 10 Burpees OYO

Mosey to flag for Pledge

The Thang:

Mosey to steps near football field and partner up while I explained the overall plan, something to resemble football. Started off with ab work (engage the core early). Partner 1 did called exercise while Partner 2 ran up steps in high knee fashion then came down and swapped with P1. The exercises were Flutter Kicks X 2 rounds each, Dying Cockroaches X 2 rounds each, then Hip Slappers X 3 rounds each. If you do enough hip slappers it DOES engage the core, contrary to someone’s mumble chatter. Before moving on to the next part I read an email blast about Inspiration from the Eagle’s Nest-this is something a few of us get from Stroganoff that is usually short and motivational and I thought this was particularly appropriate since we all felt inspired to get out of the fartsack knowing it would be 21 degrees outside, KUDO’s to our FNG to brave the cold.

Next we moseyed to the field for some grass drills (NO, NOT GRASS PICKERS. THOSE ARE NOT EXERCISES) followed by a 120 yard spring (back of goal line to other back of goal line). I claimed it was a 100 yard sprint but it became a sort of mosey and Roscoe pulled out the measuring tape and told me it was really 120 yards. I think somewhere along here clothes started flying off of Madoff and Oompa Loompa. That running 100 yards thing is a lot harder than I remember. Most of us took a turn at calling the grass drills and Short Sale gave us a little extra punishment with some delay before getting back up. He called it something like a plyometric pushup-I thought that was something I tried to get off my girlfriend in high school??). We were not even half way thru at this point but I was pretty spent. We counted off to catch our breath then moved on to O and D.

The offensive work involved 2 QBs and 2 receivers-throw the ball and if caught we moved the line down the field. If ball is dropped, 5 burpees for each ball that hits the ground. I’ll keep it short-we did a lot of burpees, it was ugly, and we had to turn around at the 50 yard line.

The defensive work was next. We started at the back of the goal line, bear crawled about 20 yards, sprinted another 20 yards, then backwards ran the rest of the field. There was some mumble about this being a restricted type of running in GasHouse but I ignored it and we moved on. Anthrax was not present and I kept Roscoe in my sites the whole time. No pax were dogpiled during this exercise. We did this a couple times then lunged instead of bear crawled a time or 2.

Next, we moved back to the steps and did a few more rounds of partner work with flutter kicks, dying cockroaches, and hip slappers. We had about 15 minutes so I offered 2 undisclosed options to the FNG and he quickly chose option B which was a moderate mosey across to the church for a wall of plank while each pax in turn carried the football up the steps and back to next pax. Option A would have involved a bunch of burpees and partner work so I will have to save that for another time. We lunged from the steps to the road then moseyed back to start for some Mary. The pax were slow to move to the 2nd round so I Oklahoma’d in some burpees for fun. A few minutes later the bells of freedom rang and we called it.

As promised, I offered 10 burpees for our single FNG-I was relieved there were not more. Roscoe was my wildcard and could have shown with anywhere from 1 to 10 FNGs this morning. The cold weather was a blessing. Thanks Stroganoff for sharing the Burpees.

We made our announcements, named our FNG-Keith “Stone Cold” Trietley, one of Charlotte’s finest who was injured while serving and protecting almost 6 years ago. The guy has been through more physical trauma during an 8 month period of recovery than any one person deserves. Great day to be out there with some great guys. We finished with a quick COT then met up with Bandit at Coffeerama after he finished at the Fighting Yank.

(after) Christmas Party will be Saturday, January 7 at my house-put it on the calendar and bring your M but leave kids at home. Put it on the calendar.

Whoopee

10,10,9,9,8,8…

6 PAX came to Midoriyama  on one of the rare evenings where it is colder at Midoriyama in the afternoon than it was at the morning workouts. Its cold so lets get warmed up.

Warmup:

SSH x 15 IC

Hillbillies x 15 IC

Merkins  x 15 IC

Still cold so lets get moving.

The Thang:

Start with a mosey to the track and took the long way around the track to a good flat spot. Explain to the men that all exercises will be the same amount of reps. 2 exercises at each station, 10,10, 9, 9, 8, 8… to 1,1. We should get the worst over with first. Burpies and LBCs. Forgot about being cold after that one. Next mosey back around the track and over to the bleachers at the soccer field. Incline and decline merkins. Mosey to the playground for pullups and WW1s. A little bit of time left so mosey back to the bleachers where we started for dips and Bobby Hurleys. Very short mosey to the flag for the Pledge and 22 merkins for the Veterans. Strong work out of all.

Circle up for announcements and COT.

It was an honor to lead and I look forward to next time

Beat Navy!

Today is the 117th Army-Navy football game and I encourage all to tune at 3pm to watch the future leaders of our armed forces do battle on the fields of friendly strife.  The Army team is paying tribute to the 82nd Airborne Division today and wearing uniforms inspired by the uniforms worn by the 82nd Paratroopers during WWII.

On to the workout…

Warm Up:

To get the pax in right mindset for the big game I decided to call some airborne cadence on our mosey (this was for you Sargento).  Mosey at a double time, in cadence around the block and finish at the pavilion.

The Thang:

The Deck of “Double” Death: used pinochle deck of cards instead of standard deck (9, 10, J, Q, K, A x2 for each suit). After 12 cards are flipped, run a quarter mile for a break.  Aces were wild.  Person who flipped an ace could decide if we did 15 of the normal exercise or 25 of the exercise of their choice (ended up doing 50 Merkins on the 2 ace of spades…)

  • Spades = Burpees
  • Clubs = Merkins
  • Diamonds = Dips
  • Hearts = WWII Situps
  • Total exercises per suit = 140
  • Total run = 1 mile

After round 3 YHC challenged pax to do 5 x five man Merkins.  If successful, last round of spades would be changed to squats instead of burpees.  Pax formed a pentagon and put their feet on the back of the person behind them.  Merkins performed in cadence.  Pax were successful, or at least the opposite side of the pentagon assured the YHC that we were…

After final round, enough time left for a triple nickel up the hill.  Sprint to top, 5 x squats, sprint to bottom, 5 x monkey humpers.  Repeat 5 times.

Moseyed back to  start to close out.

Pledge

Announcements: Convergence next week.

Prayer Request:

  • Edison’s family as they deal with the death of his M’s sister
  • Bandit’s father and friend as they deal with death of their M’s.

Go Army, Beat Navy!
