Allen Tate’s BPOP

To Ruck, or Not To Ruck

We used to have a ruck in Belmont and it fizzled out over time with different things here and there and there was only four or so who posted anyway, but I always liked it.  While rummaging thru Twitter, I came across the Go Ruck Wednesday.

When it came time to get it on, we did a quick warmup: SSH x20IC, Moroccan Night Clubs x25IC, Grass Pokers (for whoopie) x10IC.

Thang:  Short mosey across the parking lot and circle up.  10 rounds of 20 squats with hands on head (didnt have a sandbags or blocks), 20 Merkins, 50 Flutter-kicks.  Not a whole lot of mumble chatter and we realized Dolph and Sargento need to practice at it.  We got thru round 7 and I wanted to get some team work in before Sargento had to roll out, so we mosey to the back of the school for two rounds of something I dont have a name for.  One partner would do french fries while the other ran and jumped up the loading dock and did five burpees and ran down the ramp.  Repeat x2 rounds with the exercises in the middle changing from french fries to LBCs to Mountain climbers.  A fellowship mosey to discuss a few things and then mosey to the start and finish our remaining rounds of the ruckaround.   With a handful of minutes left, we set the timer for one minute and each pax picks a workout for a solid 60 seconds….LBCs, turtle crunches, CDDs, jump squats, dying cockroaches.  Mosey to the start and finish with wave of merkins to 5.

Announcements – nothing really noted.

BOM – Tophat took us out.

Moleskin – we talked about things happening and Tiny Tank was brought up and how he is moving and his impact that he has had.  He is currently the site Q and is responsible for at least five regularly attending pax and a couple of others that show sporadically.  We talked about how we need more like him and that we have to step it up to fill the void that will be left by his absence as well as Bulldogs.  TT isnt leaving for a while so make sure you come out and post and be the example he has been.  We also talked about the convergence at Folsom last Saturday and how awesome it was to have +/-39 guys show up (some at the correct time, others as they felt like it) and sweat with a fellow brother to say goodbye.

The Thang:
I originally had something a little different planned but changed for the number of PAX there. I wanted to get everyone involved with the Q. At each corner of the track we did exercises that were lead by each PAX there. When we went to the the next corner we took turns carrying the blocks.

Merkin, Squat, Flutter Kicks, Plank Jacks, Seal Jacks, Hillbillies.

YHC would call on a different PAX to lead each one of these at each corner. All did a great job!

Partner up for Jacob’s ladder. P1 does SSH at the bottom while P2 runs to the top and does 1 burpee then switch. Add a burpee each time you go up. Do 7 trips. Crowd pleaser!

Mosey back to the parking lot where the Painlab guys were standing on ther hands! Circle up for the Iron hulk(Jack Webb at a 1:4 ratio). Man my hands are so heavy!

Announcements-Advisory meeting Sunday at 7 at Cavendish Brewery. Website is up. Give Floppy Disk some praise when you see him. He took this on without being asked and has done a great job!

Prayer Request: Families with lose, Coach K, Several friends and family members fighting cancer.

Moleskin:
YHC talked during the workout about the mission of F3. Sometimes I feel like I get lost in everything going on and forget the real purpose. We are here to become leaders and build leaders. For this thing to work it requires each and everyone of us to lead. During the workout everyone lead a part of it. That’s where it starts. Leading a workout. Then your confidense grows and you take that confidense home with you to lead your family the way God intended you too. Then from there you spread it into your community. Being a leader isn’t easy. It comes with a heavy burden you have to carry(the blocks we took turns carrying) but our Lord never said things would be easy. We took turns carrying this load and did partner work as an example that we are here for each other and don’t have to carry the load alone. By the way did I mention we have an Advisory meeting this week? Come out and help carry the load.

TRACK STARS

The decision to Q at Gashouse was made last week with some encouragement . So I humbly agreed, this was my first Q on Saturday  so was a little nervous.  With the Pain Lab we had a total of 21 . 16 of those chose to become better TRACK STARS . So here is how it went….

Pancakes

The decision to Q was locked in two weeks ago when Guts and I took the fantastic voyage to Folsom for a great workout with great people.  Whoopee called for extra credit/Bro-lympic training before the workout at 0600 and then Pizza Man decided to run to the extra credit from his house before that.  As Guts and I approached the AO with “Folsom Prison Blues” playing EXTREMELY LOUD from my car Pizza Man and Whoopee gave a friendly wave, happy that we were F3 guys and not some weirdo’s.  Or at least I hope that is what they thought.

Oompa Loompa joined in for the EC workout at 0600 that was Q’d by Whoopee.  Oompa’s plan was to get the EC and then travel to the Gashouse for the Painlab.  We tried to talk him out of it but he stayed true to his brother Rudolph and left us after the EC.  I won’t call him out here for being a wus.  The EC was pretty bad/good and got the sweat rolling to the point that no one could catch a wet football when we threw it prior to the main beatdown.  We were happy to see the trucks rolling in with a new record for a Saturday at Folsom with 11 total and two quality FNG’s.

YHC modified my plans for the warm up so I could let the new PAX experience a typical F3 experience.  They would not be disappointed as there was lots of mumblechatter throughout, with Pizza Man bringing most of the banter.

Indian Run to the flag for Pledge of Allegiance

The next exercise was 7’s.  Seven exercises in order back to back.  We start with 7 Mountain Climbers, 7 Plank Jacks, 7 air presses, 7 squats, 7 skier lunges each leg, and finally 7 burpees and backplank for recovery with a repeat x3.

Lot’s of mumblechatter in the plank position as we discussed why 7?  Was it because yesterday was the 7th?  How many?  Why? How many rounds?  You get the idea.

Quick discussion on Discipline:  Discipline is the suppression of base desires, and is usually understood to be synonymous with self-control and restraint. Virtuous behavior can be described as when one’s values are aligned with one’s aims: to do what one knows is best and to do it gladly.  Discipline equals freedom.

Mosey down the hill to the Ampitheater for partner work stolen from the Independence Day workout at the Fort.  We modified the 1776 workout.

One partner does the work while other rests and then switch until you get through the following.  (We did them in order all together since I didn’t have a grease board to list them all  (Q-fail)

At this point there were several PAX who had stopped sweating and had been asking where the water fountains were.  Since the Q is responsible for the outcome, we moseyed back to start where the Q pulled out a case of water (Q-win) and let the hydration take place before the fireworks at the end.  Mosey to the tennis courts for

76 burpees.

With three minutes to go, we called three minutes of Mary and did squats, SSH, and LBC’s to end with Guts, Gumby, and WoJo calling the exercises.

The good news/bad news is I completely skipped a section on the tennis courts. We skipped at least 30 hip slappers, 121 Merkins, burpee long jumps and few others.  Q-Fail #2  There needs to be a lexicon term for all the things left on your weinke when you fail to follow through with your plan.

Nameorama….we welcomed FNG’s Sgt. Hulka and Sister Act to the F3 family.  Hulka is a real American Army hero with multiple deployments.  Sister Act has three daughters so Whoopee will be his new mentor.  Keep EH’ing it was great to see new guys enjoying F3.

Moleskin:  At Huckleberry’s request I shared a few words about the relationship between you and your M and kids.  Put your wife first.  Ephesians 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.

Prayer requests for Gastone’s M’s mother who is in hospice care.  Prayers for the family of the doctor in Dallas that died Monday of cancer and left behind young daughters.  Prayers for Coach K and his family after the death of his grandmother.

On the way to breakfast, Pizza Man decided to run home.  As we passed by Whoopee had apparently rehydrated enough and couldn’t take seeing Pizza Man alone so he jumped out of my car and took his shirt off and started running with Pizza Man, leaving behind his gloves, football, and twenty bucks in my car.  We wouldn’t see him again until he had a fresh shirt and strolled into coffeeteria like a boss.  I returned his cash but still have at least one glove and the football.

8 at Coffeeteria for some great conversation and enough food for the rest of the week.  Everyone in Dallas seems to know Gumby and Sparky #localcelebrities.  I can’t judge but to see a man eat a double cheeseburger and fries at 0815 in the morning is impressive.  I recommend getting the side of pancakes. It beats McDonalds for the most calories for your $$.

If we are breathing we are having a good day.  Don’t waste the opportunity to make an impact on others.  Thanks for giving me the opportunity to lead.  Folsom is a great AO, the PAX are always welcoming and the fellowship is strong.

3rd F theme for July, Liberty and Identity.

As you might expect, the 3rd F theme for the month of July is Liberty.  However, I hope I encourage you to see Liberty, and its presence in your life from a different perspective.  I have had the privilege of sharing Tuesday mornings with several brothers at the Crusade, a 3rd F study at the Starbucks in Harris Teeter.  Whoopee has been leading a study through a book called “Killing Lions” by John and Sam Eldredge.  An underlying theme in this book is self-identity and purpose in our lives.  To summarize one point in the book, a young man from a foreign country sits in a college class seeking his doctorate. Before arriving in the western world the young man had killed a lion with a spear to protect his village and livestock.  He was regarded as a hero and a leader to his people. Sam comments “I can’t imagine any university final or job interview being very daunting for a man with lion scars across his chest”.

One might suppose that a similar battle faced our founding fathers.  Knowing the battle that may come; the imminent attack of the military might of England, those colonists pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor as they signed their names to the declaration of independence.  When we read of this in history books, do we really grasp the weight of this event?  Do you suppose each signer went home to their families, apprehensive of the decision they had made?  It took months for this declaration to cross the ocean to be read by the King of England.  I can image it could be a feeling akin to knowing that a lion crept outside of the village and could strike at any moment.  What was it that brought these men to the decision that the battle would be worth it?

 

The key to both situations is this; knowing your Identity.  A man can not know true liberty without knowing who he is and what he stands for.

In the Declaration of independence, a critical line is written: “We hold these truths to be Self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness”.  When these men felt the bondage of the King of England, they called on their identity as men equal to each other, and equal even to the King, and later with their reliance on divine providence they clearly communicate who they believe themselves to be, and in whom they put their trust.

Whether the battle you are about to enter is against a Lion, military might, or a personal struggle you must know who you are, and what you are capable of!  In both instances, Life and Liberty hinged on the warrior knowing who he was and what he believed when the weapons were drawn.

Have you even stopped to ask yourself “what do I really believe, and is it worth fighting for?” Do you face the battles in your life knowing who you are and what you believe?

Week 1: Both the cause of liberty and the Gospel of Christ is most often spread through the shedding of blood.  We honor those who sacrificed before us for the freedom we share in our country, but most of all for the freedom we have through faith in Jesus Christ.  YHC shared on the story of David Eubanks and his family as they lend aid to those suffering under the grip of ISIS.  I encourage you to watch this video.  I believe you will see a man who knows who he is, what he is capable of, and in whom he believes.

Week 2: Who’s your Daddy?  Are you a Son of God?  Do you stand in battle knowing the creator of the world has your back? We will review Romans Chapter 8 and your identity as a Son of God.

Week 3: Liberty, are you free to do whatever you want?  Matthew Kelly, author of “Rediscovering Catholicism” is quoted “Freedom is not the ability to do whatever you want. Freedom is the strength of character to do what is good, true, noble, and right.” We will review Galations 5: and how the church in Galatia put itself back into bondage by straying from faith, and the bondage that could come if they fell into the sinful ways of the world.

Week 4: JJ has the Q for a liberty inspired message straight from coach K,

Week 5: The Ambassador of God  We will review 2nd Corinthians Chapter 5 and how you are reconciled to God and his Ambassador.     Also planned for this week will be an F3 dads fishing outing. Taking suggestions for locations!

GasHouse National – Round II, The Course Wins

A little more than a year ago, I accepted my first Q at the GasHouse, ready to present a unique beat-down where golf was the theme. The groundskeeper intended for the PAX to have a challenge, blowing up on holes with high scores resulting in high reps of the exercises. What occurred in 2016 was akin to the Bob Hope Classic with the PAX blistering the course with under par scores, much to the chagrin of YHC.

Earlier in the week Stroganoff reminds the PAX the GasHouse is open for 7/2. Amid a popular vacation time and competing with the Nomads and Tool Time’s new man-crush Tolken showing off the Speed for Need chairs at the Yank, I accepted the opportunity to boast the re-designed GasHouse National. Consulting and studying with famed architects, the new layout would be tougher with restricted flight “balls”, added length, tougher pins to reach, higher reps of exercises, and a new second shot that brought in the strategic element to consider laying up instead of going for the green.

Upon completing the course set-up, I arrived in the parking lot of the GasHouse with 8 minutes to spare. Hushpuppy concluded his 3rd F with JJ, Stroganoff, and JK2. Heyzeus, DaVinci drove into the lot and we had a young whipper-snapper, DaVinci “EH-ing” his 13 year old son Jack as our FNG. This combination gave us a perfect number for two four-somes that would tackle the course but first, a brief disclaimer, probably more for the senior aged PAX than our new young member, full of energy. First exercise was announced:  “Side-Straddle-Hops in cadence x 10.” Once that concluded, “Let’s mosey” was called. Whoopie would have loved it, but he was nowhere to be seen. Maybe fart-sacking on vacation, starting a new twitter war, or listening to George Strait. Hey but for the PAX under my command, we moseyed to the flag to honor Old Glory and all the freedom it represents, then the scenic route to the back of the Library for an extended warm-up.

Circle up and begin SSH, each PAX would drop for 5 merkins in order. Once that round concluded, we went to 5 LBC’s. This got the heart rate moving upward and I was happy to hear some exasperation as the SSH’s continued steadily for a few minutes. One last round, this time for each PAX to perform slow squats while each man (boy), dropped for a 10 count Flutter Kick (got to keep Stroganoff happy). Then it was on to the main event with a jog along Churchill Dr and left on Carmen, a slow incline that Gastone would love the chance to employ. While waiting for the 6, JK2 lead some plank-work, AYE!.

The Q had multiple responsibilities, course set-up, rules official, tournament director, and player. Here is the format for those following at home. We had two four-man teams to play a modified captain’s choice. At the tee, one member of the team would throw a bean-bag (cornhole bag) for their drive. Each man would lunge walk to the bag and then throw their second shot toward the flag. A new “shot” was the Burpee Long jump and this did bring the mumble chatter, even among my own team. The challenge for this “shot” was if the team decided to lay-up, it would increase the number of reps once arriving at the hole, the ultimate risk/reward which for those that enjoy the real game of golf, may appreciate – that is if they are able to lift their arms when the day was complete. There were nine holes of various lengths with par set at 36. For the number of shots it took to arrive at the hole, that number was multiplied by the number of reps for the exercise so 4 shots x 10 merkins required the individual PAX to do 40 merkins. The shots were:

  1. Lunge walk
  2. Burpee Long jump
  3. Bear crawl
  4. Crab walk
  5. Zombie walk
  6. Skip

The holes were:

  1. Par 4 – American Hammers x 10
  2. Par 4 – Squats x 10
  3. Par 5 – Merkins x 10
  4. Par 3 – Derkins x 10
  5. Par 5 – Flutter kicks x 10
  6. Par 4 – CDD’s x 10
  7. Par 4 – Pull-ups x 5
  8. Par 3 – Dips x 10
  9. Par 4 – Burpees x 5

 

Moleskin

The guys pushed hard, complaining a little but earning their scores. As with any Weinke, there is always something to learn from. The 2017 course was as challenging as a US Open at Winged Foot or Oakmont. The allotted time expired before the event could be completed with each team at +2 when the horn sounded. The PAX appeared beaten, but not defeated. Another version of this event is likely to appear in the near future. It brings out camaraderie amid the competition (you verses you). The only thing missing is the beer cart girl, stay tuned for the time and place.

 

COT

We had some challenge to name our FNG, DaVinci’s oldest (Jack Smith) entering the 8th grade at Cramerton Middle. We tried the typical methods of favorite cartoons and food. Ended up with his favorite subject being history. Something about the PAX or the FNG being indecisive had us pondering a bit until JJ states: “Neville Chamberlain” former Prime Minister of the UK; that’s like a 40 foot swish at the end of the shot clock by JJ’s namesake.  We lifted prayers for a friend of JK2 and all the Police, Fire, Medic, Doctors and Nurses on call this weekend to help those that are injured, as well as safe travels.

For those unable to attend, begin to sharpen your respective games. Hopefully you will soon have a chance to test your skills against the infamous GasHouse National.

Sorry I have been lax in posting this.  Excuses and reasons. . .

It was fitting that Rudolph shared in his 3rd F message on “Many hands make light work” but the message was so much more.  It was real; it as real that every man is often ashamed to ask or accept help.  We want to be able to carry it all and not let others down.  If we need help, we might not be strong enough.  Then life drops a brick on us.  We get an injury or we hit an obstacle and we are forced to humble ourselves and realize that sometimes we need help.  I ended up in my church in Gastonia 16 years ago when God decided to slow me down with an injured ankle.  I was forced to accept help from people I didn’t know and the events were set up to plant me where I belong.

As we all shook off that undeniable feeling that we could not do it without the help of others it was time for tha thang:

Mosey down the sidewalk and plant it on the wall for some hip slappers called by Whoopee x 15 IC.

Mosey to the Chiropractor parking lot for some plank and some Peter parkers called by someone I can’t remember.  I needed help. I can’t get horizontal and count without the danger of Merlot.

Mosey through the neighborhood and meet up at the intersection for some Goof Ball, 15 IC called By Roscoe (ok, I wasn’t horizontal this time I just like it when others count).

Mosey some more and stopped in front of a nice house for some Monkey Humpers. Maidoff called the Cadence on this one as we jokingly led the moon fest in front of our friends house we are both trying to EH. I asked him Tuesday if he happened to look out his window and unfortunately he had not.

On to the park bench in the median and what do we find, Blocks!  YHC reminded everyone that when your brother is hit with a heavy weight to carry  we must walk with him and help carry the load. Everyone partnered up and we moseyed out to Belvedere with the blocks, trading with each other to share the load.

On Belvedere we found a nice intersection with a grassy median for some Dora 123.  100 overhead press, 200 squat, 300 curls (which I Omaha’d to 200 as it was already past 7:30 and we were 1.5 miles from home with a long way to go to carry the bricks).  Mosey to the jewelry store for some flutter kicks IC.  We wanted to toss the bricks in the bushes but I just couldn’t let our brothers down.  Mosey on to the strip mall formerly known as Showmars.  In honor of carrying the load while life brings your brother to a crawl, we bear crawled the entire length of the awning, crawling 4 posts while the partner carried the brick, then alternating; about 5 times each in all.  At this point it was 7:47 and I realized we never make it back to startex carrying the bricks so we stacked them neatly to the side and moseyed on.  We stopped at the big wall for some peoples chair and air presses, then mosey to the culdesac  and waited for the 6.  Mosey on up the hill past the school and back to startex, with 2 minutes to spare.  Rudolph already had the pain lab on their 6 and someone called for Smalls to call flutter kicks.  Big mistake.  I think he set a record at 62 before calling halt.  I had the final call for an exercise and called burpees, just in time for the bells to toll.

Strong work men.

During the workout I shared of a story I heard on the radio.  A woman who had a stroke in her early 30’s and it took her 2 years to return to a normal semblance of life.  Many of her friends were around here but grew impatient with her slow recovery.  “Oh look, she made lunch, she’s back to normal!”.  If only it were that simple.  Her closest friend became an older woman, more mature, who had also suffered a traumatic brain injury earlier in life.  She had the wisdom and patience to walk through the trial with her.  Our scars are not to remind us of our failures, but to remind us of what we have come through, and to give us credibility to those who we guide through their own battles.

If I could only have known during that time that we would later be grieving the loss of brother Cheech later in the week.  I hope that those in the Nation with their own scars will stand by the family; will walk with them and carry the weight they can’t seem to go any further.  My prayer to the Sky Q is that both mother and children will never be alone in their walk.  That those in Fia and F3 will walk patiently with them and guide them in wisdom.  God be with them.

 

 

2016 Pre Christmas Party Beatdown

The air was filled with anticipation, lactic acid and belches. It was a beautiful sight to smell. There, in the wilderness of Downtown, stood 34 men in disbelief that this day had finally arrived. For in the next hour, stood the appetizer to the Christmas Party. The 5 minutes of ELF Sacking(which should’ve been titled 6 minutes) was upon us. Wait, is that Spiderman in the clock tower window! No, over there, that one. -Nope, he strolled up 10 minutes early and is stretching on the steps.

We head over to the parking deck, bottom level. A brief instruction huddle was followed up by PAX racing up the steps, over fields and to gramdma’s parking spot we go.

Stairs

YHC was kind of hoping for no pax to show this morning so he could return home and climb back into the fart sack, but luckily 3 other pax showed and a good workout took place.  Norwood was given pass from his M this morning to post on a weekday, but bad dreams of ‘Wide Right’ kept him up all night and he failed to show.  And once again no Mayor so insert Mayor missing workout joke here.

All regulars present so no disclaimer given.

Warm Up:

The Thang:

Lots of stairs on the weinke this morning so the pax moseyed down to the stadium.  Up first the pax would perform 10 burpees OYO and then run all the stairs on the home side of the stadium.  Pax would run down the right side of the stairs and back up the left side of the same stairs, running down and up all six sets.  Mosey to the start and plank up for the 6.  The weinke called for 6 sets of these and YHC realized he may have bit off more than he could chew after the first set.  The pax were calling for an Omaha after 2, so YHC decided to break it up a bit  After 4 sets we moved on to the next portion of the workout with a promise to come back and finish the last 2 after.

Next we moseyed down to the football field for some 11’s.  Pax performed 10 Merkins on the home side of the field, ran across to the visitors sideline and performed 1 LBC.  Then back to the home sideline for 9 Merkins and back to the visitors for 2 LBCs.  Continued until we performed 1 Merkin and 10 LBCs.  The legs were definitely feeling the stairs on this and not much chatter was said.

Back to the stairs to finish up the remaining 2 sets.  Cut the last set short because of time and moseyed back to the Flag to finish on time.

  • Q School has gone well in other regions and Tesla can coordinate one for Gashouse on any Saturday this summer.  Would like 30-40 pax, but 20 would be a success
