Shoes 10/31 for Charlotte Rescue Mission

This Saturday 10/31 at our Anniversary Convergence we are collecting athletic shoes in support of the F3 Metro Shoe Drive. These shoes will be delivered to the men in need at the Charlotte Rescue Mission. Please bring them Saturday send them with someone if you can’t make it, or reach out to BOS to arrange a meeting point. See program details below.

AYE! BOS

By now you’ve probably heard of the F3 Metro shoe drive to benefit the men at the Charlotte Rescue Mission. While they can use all sorts of donations, the focus of this effort is men’s athletic shoes. The purpose is to make sure any man in the Rebound program who wants to participate in the Mission I’m Possible workout at 9am on Saturday doesn’t have to sit out because he doesn’t have the right footwear.
The criteria is straight forward. Look in your closet for running shoes that still look reasonably presentable and have some life left. When deciding if an old pair of shoes is too far gone or not, I always like to say imagine you are personally handing this pair of shoes to a man at CRM. Do you feel good about your gift, or are you a little embarrassed? You get the idea.

We have all bought a pair of shoes that felt great in the store, but we realized in the second mile of the first run they weren’t going to work. Or maybe you have a pair of running shoes that still look good, but they are starting to get a few too many miles on them for serious running. Perfect. We’ll take them…

Sharpen Up November Challenge

Most men in life are in the middle of the bell curve  unless we choose to be be better than that.  If you believe you are one of those guys in the middle, then this is especially for you.    I am talking to the guys that post a couple days  a week and call it good.  The guys who are passively involved in one or two F’s.  The one’s who don’t avail themselves to all the items on the F3 Menu.  The ones who won’t do a CSAUP or Q a workout regularly.  The ones who don’t lives their lives intentionally and “oversleep” instead of making a decision to wake up and get after it.  This challenge is to push that bell curve to the right.

I have heard some clamoring among the Gashouse PAX for a challenge along the lines of the 40 day challenge so here it is.

No excuses!

VISION:  In November you are going to challenge yourself to a few required physical tasks as well as maintaining standards to increase your acceleration.

This challenge can be modified based on your fitness level but make sure you make it happen.

ARTICULATION:

1st F Requirements:

100 Miles combined run/ruck miles for the month to include:

-At least one ten-mile run and…

-At least one 12-mile ruck

-Or…one combined run/ruck of 15 miles

One Murph workout

Combined total of at least 25 workouts (30 minutes minimum, CSAUP’s count as 1)

Hydrate and take in protein after each workout.

Dietary Guidelines:

No Soda

No Fast Food

No sweets

No chips

More water

More salads, vegetables, and lean meats

No alcohol* (except at Bottom’s Up, F3 Gastonia’s only standing 2nd F event.  Limit yourself to two drinks (Moderation in all things, including moderation))

Cheat meals must be EARNED!   (with the exception of Thanksgiving.  Thanksgiving is a cheat day)

Seven workouts in a week earns you a cheat meal.

Going to Q-Source on Sunday morning earns a cheat meal.

If you have never been to a Q-Source session and go to your first one, you get an additional Cheat meal.

Persuasion:  Don’t be weak.  If you aren’t strong, you’re wrong.  That is it.  Make a shared Google Doc with your Shieldlock to track your mileage.  Journal your posts using Notes on your phone or some other method.  Post on Slack to update on your progress #accountability

YHC encourages Site-Q’s to schedule a long run or Ruck or Murph sometime during the month.

If you have questions, feel free to ask.  Otherwise, commit now to the challenge and quit making excuses.  Covid 2020 has been a real challenge  but we can continue to improve.  Prepare for this challenge now so you are ready.    The challenge begins with a ten miler at the Coconut Horse on November 1st, followed by Q-Source.  I am sure my friends in NOGA will make a similar option available.

EXHORTATION:  Quit being soft,

Roscoe

Brew Ruck

Do you like a good beer every once in a while? Do you like to Ruck? Do you like to spend a little time with your F3 bros talking trash? Well have I got an event for you! F3 Gastonia Brewruck. Why a ruck? Why not!

What is it? We will meet, ruck, and stop for beers at several breweries in charlotte.

When-Saturday October 17th 1:00pm

Where-Meet at Old Mecklenburg Brewery(OMB) 4150 Yancey Rd, Charlotte, NC 28217

Then what? We have 4 stops planned starting at OMB. Each stop has several options with so many breweries close together. Each stop has 1-1.5 miles of rucking in between with an ending ruck of 3.1 miles back to the start from the end. It should total around 6.5-7 miles over the course of about 4-5 hours. Of course this all depends on stopping and starting time at each stop. Reach out and let me know if you are a HC.

Completely Sane And Utterly Purposeful CSAUP

Most CSAUP’s are designed with the intent of taking a PAX well outside his comfort zone, while pushing him to limits above his previous efforts. At times, these events cater to PAX who are already above average in certain areas while indirectly excluding those who may not be as advanced. The purpose of this event is to provide something where any PAX who can make it through a 1 hour boot camp will be comfortable participating. Don’t mistake this as meaning it will be easy, but it shouldn’t require any dedicated training. Check out the details below.

When: Saturday, September 19th from 0530 until 0830ish

Where: Folsom AO

Who: All Gashouse PAX!!!!

Why: To challenge your physical abilities and compete as a team against other PAX while enjoying some great 2nd F

What: 3 man team event done relay style and consisting of 3 segments; 2 mile run, 2 mile ruck and Pain Lab style block workout. Each PAX will complete all 3 segments, but only 1 team member will be active at a time. Rotation will be:

PAX 1 – Ruck

PAX 2 – Pain lab

PAX 3 – Run

PAX 2 – Ruck

PAX 3 – Pain lab

PAX 1 – Run

PAX 3 – Ruck

PAX 1 – Pain lab

PAX 2 – Run

Teams will be determined based on the estimated run pace for each PAX to keep teams as evenly matched as possible and in hopes that all teams will finish at close to same time. The minimum weight for the ruck will be 20#, but those PAX who are proficient in this area are encouraged to carry more. Sanitizing spray and wipes will be available at the event for any ruck packs or blocks that will be shared.

Complete this form if you want to participate:

All I need is the best way to contact you and your estimated pace for a 2 mile run. My goal is to notify participants of their team members by Monday, September 14th.

Shoot ’em Up

OK all you rednecks and gun toting bearded beasts-

It’s finally here. We’ve got a date for the first shoot ’em up event, hopefully the first of many. This first one is going to be at Foothills Public Shooting Complex on Saturday, September 12. They open at 930 AM so the plan is get there around 930 AM, sign in and get set up to start shooting ASAP. Bring your own lunch and we can use their pavilion and eat lunch there at 12 noon. Anyone that wants to stay and shoot in the afternoon can do it, but I’ll probably have some chores to do and head out after that. By chores, I mean I’ll probably take a nap and get ready for the Tyson vs some other old man fight event at Allen Tate’s house that night-see a separate pre-blast from Huckleberry. I’ll be bringing my 9 mm pistol, 30-06 rifle, and .22 rifle. They also have skeet and trap if you are interested.

https://foothillspublicshooting.cc/ should get you to their website. Need to get on there and sign the waiver thing ahead of time.

Here are some specifics:

Date: Saturday, September 12: 930 AM

Fees:

$12 Admission

$5 per round of skeet/trap (25)

$10 steel target range (pistols only)

$2 lane fee

$1 for extra targets

Address: 283 Fielding Road, Cherryville, NC 28021

Bring your own gun, check out website and sign waiver ahead of time, bring your own ammo (they have some but may still have limited quantities in 9 mm), make sure you have right kind of ammo.

Pack a lunch and we can eat at their pavilion together after couple hours of shooting.

Let Whoopee know if you are a HC. If we have more than 15, I will need to make reservations.

Hope to see you there-Whoopee

Time is closing in for the first Speed For Need event in our region.  If you haven’t had a chance to participate in one of these events, you should definitely do everything you can to try to make it out.  If you are not familiar with what Speed For Need is, it is a non-profit organization that gives opportunities to individuals to participate and compete in running events that they would not be able to experience on their own.  Please take time to look at the Speed For Need website https://speedforneed.org/ and check out this video from the Belmont 5k last year https://youtu.be/o_6wTi3RgRk .  If you have any questions please feel free to reach out to me.

Preblast: Dredd to visit the Gashouse

Calling all PAX! On Thursday October 31st, Halloween, the original and still head Nantan Dredd will visit the Gashouse and speak to the Rotary Club of Gastonia. Come for lunch and the message!

Three and a half years ago Dredd and OBT spoke to our Rotary club and YHC hadn’t yet posted for my first F3 workout. I did end up posting that Saturday at Gashouse and the rest is my history. Obviously anyone who’s posted to an F3 workout and understands what a huge part of our lives F3 is appreciates Dredd’s vision and what makes F3 awesome.

YHC is now Rotary Club President and it’s time to bring back Dredd and Dark Helmet to share the F3 message for those who have heard him before but more importantly those who haven’t. Just like I needed to hear Dredd’s passion for why we’re made to be more than who we currently are as men, all of us know men who need F3. I invite all PAX and their visitors to come for lunch ($14) and the powerful message to follow. The meal begins as early as 12:00 and the program starts at 1:00, finishing at 1:30.

Please RSVP directly to Sargento if you can be there and any guests you’re bringing.

AYE!

Backblast Yes or No

6/16/2019 Whitewater Center
There is an F3 Gastonia mountain bike text chain that goes out from time to time whenever anyone in the group decides to ride somewhere they can alert others to see if anyone would like to join them on their ride. On a sort of regular basis, someone in the group will announce a Sunday afternoon ride at the Whitewater Center around 2:30ish and a few guys will show. Some will say this is not and official AO so a backblast shouldn’t be allowed. You know who you are. Some will argue (sarcastically maybe, but it is difficult to tell) that F3 is a starfish organization where leaders can go out and start a workout and that doing so is the essence of F3, invigorating male community leadership! This post isn’t designed to settle that debate. It is merely to say if anyone wants to know about mountain biking in F3 Gastonia, here is kind of what happens. We usually meet just past the rest rooms about halfway down the last row before the hill but the lot was full so we parked near the Lake Loop entrance. Swimmer was running a little behind so Floppy and Freight were discussing the planned routes. Floppy and Freight go way back to at least middle school (I have the pics) and this extended relationship has determined certain strengths and weaknesses. One of Freight’s many strengths is planning and logistics. Somehow he knows the names of all the trails, where climbs are, where there are rocks, roots, signs, creeks, connections, etc. It is impressive. One of Floppy’s strengths (could be considered a weakness by his doctors but I would say it is a strength) is he is fearless on a mountain bike. No terrain is too tough, no hill is too high. He can put that bike wherever he wants and it is a sight to behold. Swimmer is another fearless type. They both attack a trail like they are racing for a prize. I digress. The route was announced and I hear East Main (which I vaguely remember as being terrible) and I hear Swimmer groan. Swimmer is not much of a talker so that groan told me a lot. Off we go to East Main and I realized why Swimmer groaned as I am pushing my bike up a curvy hill of a thousand rocks, hoping the others are waiting for the weak link in the group as I catch my breath. After East Main, we connected to Tributary, then out across the road to the newer trails, Panda, Smokey and Bandit which somehow connected back into Carolina Thread Trail. We took a shortcut off of that back to the road around the rapids and back to the parking lot for a little over 9 miles. No injuries despite one of us trying to ride through a mud hole unsuccessfully (wished we had a GoPro) and a black snake sighting!

3rd F Event

Friday Evening, April 12th, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. at New Covenant Church located at 631 Efird St. Gastonia NC 28054 we will have a 3rd F event. This is at the corner of 3rd Street and Hudson Boulevard. The speaker will be our own “Tool Time” Scott Johnson. He will speaking about his Peru Mission Trip among other things. Please make plans to attend. It should be interesting to hear what happens when F3 guys run a mission trip. Thanks to Hushpuppy for getting permission to use his church. Please help spread the word!
