Occam’s Razor

12 “Midoriyama Men” came out for a STRONG posting today!

Inspired by a recent backblast from Stroganoff about simplifying life in 2017, I put together a weinke that would make Sir William Ockham proud.

Occam’s Razor is the philosophy that “the simplest answer is most often times the correct one.” We make things too complicated in life and our workouts at F3 sometimes fall into that trap as well. (Just look at our lexicon or workouts list as proof.)

With that message to start us off – no need to get creative or fancy: Let’s elevate our heart rates, strengthen our core and make each other better. Aye!

Warmup:

SSH X 20, Toe Touches X 20 counts for each leg, Mosey time!

The Thang:

(Elevate heart rates = run) Mosey around the parking lot (scenic route) to Playground

Set 1: Say hi to Floppy Disc and Freight’s M’s and 2.0s

Set 2: 6 pull-ups & 30 Big boy situps

Set 3: 6 pull-up & 30 Merkins (kids wouldn’t sit on Dad’s backs despite offers of candy from Q)

Set 4: 6 pull-ups & 30 LBCs (mumble chatter coming from Ms)

Scenic route mosey to soccer fields aka: “Fighter’s Field”

(strenghten the core) Bruce Lee’s, Mike Tyson’s, Floyd Mayweather’s:

Set 1: Bruce Lee’s (6 Ab Exercises all I.C. – 1. Hammers x 25, 2. Leg Raises x 20, 3. LBCs x 30, 4. Heel Touches x 20, 5. Crunchy Frog x 10, omaha’ed 6th rep) & Mike Tyson’s x 10 I.C. & Floyd Mayweather’s x 20 I.C.

Rinse and repeat for Set 2…..ish (May have cut short when noticed sun setting and some members of senior circuit already have fading eye sight – needed for our “Main Event”)

Main Event:

Tennis Ball Madness:

2 Teams lineup opposite ends of the soccer field. 8 balls on each goal line. Team does SSH or squats while 1 member of team sprints to opposite field to retrieve ball 1 and bring back to their goal. Then quote and exercise is read to the group. Team does exercise together then send sprinter 2 for the 2nd ball, repeat until all 8 balls are in your goal! 1st team to get all balls wins a prize! Exercises and quotes are listed here: (strengthen core, elevate heart rate and encourage and lift each other up) Aye!

BALL 1 = 25 x Diamond Merkins

“There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to YOUR FORMER SELF!” – Hemingway

BALL 2 = 50 x Dying Cockroaches

Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” – Joshua 1:9

BALL 3 = 50 x Freddy Mercurys

“The price of anything is the amount of life you exchange for it.” – Henry David Thoreau

 BALL 4 = 25 x Merkins

I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” – Philipians 4:13

 BALL 5 = 50 x LBFCs

“The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion. Be the change that you want to see in the world.” – unknown

BALL 6 = 25 x WWI Sit Ups

“but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” – Isaiah 40:31

 BALL 7 = 50 x Squats & 100 calf raises

“No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody who is sitting on the couch.”

BALL 8 = 25 x American Thors (4 count)

“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.” – Ephesians 6:10

Catch Me If You Cans x back to the flag (serious mumble chatter and possible SV incident due to a full “nur sprint” by Freight)

 Pledge, Announcements, COT

Prayers for Huckleberry’s M, Def Leopard’s M, – successful surgeries and for Slaw’s brother, may the Lord work on his heart. Pray for the men of F3 and for our families, our community and our nation.

Moleskin: (not sure I’m using that right – like Ron Burgendy using “when in Rome” though – I’ll find it…) Shared the message that men, like a stool, have 3 legs they must stand on to stay balanced. A healthy body, healthy mind and healthy soul – F3 takes care of all 3 for me and hope we can continue to encourage each other to get better together. It was my honor to lead these great men and great friends today.

Catch me if you can, Chumbawamba!

10 Men braved the early morning hours to join Gastone in the battle to end Sadclown syndrome.

The Thang:

Pledge to start right at 5:30am.

Chumbawamba To the song Tubthumper. Start with SSH at the beginning of song, then every time they say, “I get knocked down, but I get up again” you do a Burpee. While not doing Burpee’s you are continuously doing SSH. Lot’s of mumble chatter, that makes it better for me.

Follow me to the trail that goes around the baseball field for a little Catch me if you can. Partner up, first guy does 5 Burpee’s, second guy runs backwards. Once done with burpee run forward to catch partner then turnaround and go backwards. Rinse and repeat until we make the full circle. Oh, joy more mumble chatter.

Plank with a little right arm right foot switch and gather everyone.

Next, at the bottom of the hill partner 1 Merkins while partner 2 lunge walks up hill and runs back down. Rinse and repeat 3x.

Mosey the the wall next to the picnic area and have a seat on the wall.

Balls to the Wall, for a silent 20 count. Crowd favorite on this one. If they only knew it was easier to actually put your body against the wall. Much harder not to do so. (At this point Whoopee mentioned that we could be at the picnic area instead. So I being the good guy I am obliged.

Picnic tables, 20 Jump ups on your own. 15, 3 count dips, 25 Flutter (maybe the count was crazy), 3X

Indian Run back and then it fell apart and we just ran back.

Everyone thought it was over but we don’t want to waste the 2 minutes left so we did 3 count, Diamonds, Carolina Dry Docks, and Wide Arm Merkins.

The End.

The Moleskin: I think it was the song that set all the good spirits this morning with a classic like Tubthumper. A few people showed how happy they were with a fist bump and a few people skipped my hand and just hit me. Stroganoff will have to add the joke that I missed to the comments below, I can’t wait. We completed 1.7 miles today, we worked hard and had a good time. I like that we give time for everyone to ask for prayers and pray for all of them we do.

Thanks for the honor to Q another workout, it is great to be part of such a great group of guys. Let’s continue to grow this thing and make more great men.

Gastone Out!

A Friendly Game Of Cards

The ground was wet, the fog was thick, and one by one 9 brave PAX rolled in, with an FNG patiently waiting to experience the first day of the rest of his life.  There’s no better way to start a Tuesday!  Tiny Tank’s curiosity got the best of him and needed to know how I got the name Fresh Prince.  I’d tell the story now but if you don’t already know, show up at the next workout and I’ll tell you in person.  The clock struck 5:30 AM so we got started.

Disclaimer – Short and Sweet but I covered the main points.  I’m an idiot so don’t sue me…

Warmup :

  • 15 SSH (IC)
  • 15 Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 15 HillBillies (IC)
  • 15 Merkins (IC)

Pledge

The Thang:

Mosey plus some around the parking lot with Butt Kicks, High Knees, Sprint, Karaoke Right, Karaoke Left, Bear Crawl to the entrance of the School.

Here I said something like good news, the rest of the workout will be in this area so we’ll try to stay dry.  Bad news, I have a fresh deck of cards!

  • Hearts = Crunchy Frogs
  • Spades = CDD
  • Diamonds = Squats
  • Clubs = Merkins
  • Face Cards (Regardless of Suit) = Lap Around the parking lot
  • Ace (Regardless of Suit) = 15 Burpees OYO

The deck was placed in the middle of the circle and each PAX took turns picking a card and leading the exercise (IC or OYO was determined by PAX who picked that card)

We had the pleasure of 2 trains this morning so add in 2 sets of 5 burpees OYO.

We didn’t make it through the deck before time was called but we put in a solid effort

We mosey’d back to the flag where there was 1 minute left, so 50 Moroccan Night Clubs (IC)

Announcements/COT/Prayer/Naming FNG – Weezy

Moleskin: It was an honor to lead you today, solid effort, and looking forward to my next Q.

Simplify 2017

One of my personal initiatives in 2017 is to simplify my life. Life has become too complicated for this simple man. Too fast. 24/7 email, online news, social media, internet screens everywhere, all the time…stop the madness. So in order to help me move forward with this, I devised a deviously simple workout. For the record, there’s a difference between simple and easy.

7 strong showed in the gloom to start the week at Martha’s House. I woke up around 3:00 am to some serious rain and wondered how bad it would be at 5:30 am…..it wasn’t, I could see a few stars.

Disclaimer.

Pledge.

Announcements. Prayer Requests. Name-o-Rama.

Great work men. This is a workout I occasionally do myself when I can’t post for some reason or am travelling. However, the pace was a little (maybe significantly) quicker than I normally do it. My goal was to keep us moving and keep the heart rate up for the majority of our time together this morning and focus on a few different muscle groups. I appreciate the opportunity to lead another morning workout and hope it was worth your time.

As always, it was an honor to lead.

Until the next one. Aye!

Suffer

The morning started with 3 PAX launching at 6:15 for the first unofficial Ruck. The plan was to give it try and discuss the future of Rucking in the region. We arrived to find the runners were already out on their route. Lots of good came from our Ruck walk/talk. The Ruck gives you a great chance to cover all 3 F’s. We were just going to cover business but found ourselves delving into the 3rd F! I was quite surprised to find a huge crowd of PAX when we got back to the park. Great to see all these guys posting.

Warmup:

With a group of 20 I decided we would circle up around the fountain so everyone would have a decently dry spot to start the day. As we moseyed around I noticed Mayor’s 12-13 year old nephew(Governor) was right behind me and we thought we would have fun with the PAX. We decided we would keep running around the circle to see how long they would follow us. After a few times it ws obvious it could go on for a while so we stopped so we could get some work done.

SSH x 20ic

Don Q x 15ic

Freddy Mercury x 20ic

Happy Jacks x 10

Mosey up the street to find a wall.

The Thang:

So after doing the Ruck I regretted planning a bunch of wall work and bearcrawls but to get better there has to be some suffering!

All PAX plank and starting at one end the first PAX does 5 donkey kicks then bear crawls across the parking lot and planks waiting for the last PAX to finish. After the first PAX starts crawling the next PAX starts his donkey kicks. This was tough with 20 PAX!

Long jump back across and do 25 wall taps OYO.

Australian Mtn climbers x 10ic bearcrawl across then duckwalk back. 25 wall taps OYO.

Power Holds-30 sec wall sit, 30 sec plank. Rinse and repeat for 5 minutes.

Mike Tyson x 10ic

Hip Slappers x 10ic bear crawl across.

Somewhere in here Sggweieich had to leave. He said he had to work but I think his arms were hurting. He should practice running on his hands then maybe I could go with him some morning.

Circle up for Howling Monkeys. Everyone enjoyed this so much we did 2 rounds.

Mosey to back parking lot for route 66 with squats.

Mosey back toward the flag with a stop over at String Bean for Captain Thor x 10.

Mosey to the ball field at the school. During this mosey I was talking to the future Governor about having the Mayor for an uncle. YHC thought this might be tough but was informed he was all right as long as he keeps moving and working out! Future HIM and motivator!

At the field I had 5 cones spread out longways across the field. Run to the first cone then Nur. Switch at each cone. From the other end we sprinted to each cone starting with 5 merkins and adding 5 more at each cone getting up 25 at the last cone. Rinse and repeat the first run. Going back the same ladder except with squats. Rinse and repeat the run. Going back we did the ladder with CDD’s.

A few minutes to spare so we went to the shed for Tri dips x 20ic and merkin taps. Mosey back to the flag.

We did 22 for the Vets led by Pizza Man. Then since no train had come through Sargento produced a train sound with his phone and we did 5 burpees.

COT :

Moleskin:

Great group out this morning. You guys really pushed me! I shared a little about not exercising but training instead. Set a goal and go after it. As in all parts of life there will be suffering but know there will be victory in the end!

Romans 5:3-4

Suffering produces endurance, Endurance produces character, Character produces Hope!

Tag me in Marty!

Earlier this week, my pal Short Sale asked if I would like to co-Q the Schiele on Saturday.  Of course I would!  Short Sale always has well thought out and clever themed workouts that are different and fun, yet challenging.  However when I am your tag team partner, clever and original goes out the window and we revert to primitive themes like professional wrestling.  Maybe it was yesterday’s beatdown by Spiderman and his “Conan the Barbarian” themed workout that made me go primal.  In any event, I sent out the twitterbait pre-blast picture of a wrestling tag team and we finalized the Weinke.  When we arrived at the Schiele, Short Sale had come through with originality.  He cut up a neon green t-shirt into strips and we fastened “arm flare” just below our delts and wore neon headbands.  It was at 0700 that we made our professional wrestling debut into a circle of awaiting PAX and two FNG’s.  (The twitter picture was of “The Midnight Rockers, or just The Rockers” with Shawn Michaels and Marty Janetty. They were big in the glory years of ’85-92 when we were all rocking muscle shirts and mullets.  Some of you are still stuck there (you know who you are)).

YHC led with a brief disclaimer about not being professional and everything is a suggestion.  I was almost out of gas but was just able to reach over and tag in Short Sale before I collapsed into the turnbuckle.  Michael Buffer wasn’t on the PA because there was no PA.  Maybe next time.

Warm Up:

  • SS: Toy Soldiers IC x 10 Tag In Roscoe
  • R:  Merkins IC x 10  Tag in Short Sale
  • SS: Iron Horse Sgl Ct x 10 (lunge, lunge, squat, jump – it’s a killer) Tag in Roscoe
  • R:  CDD IC x 10   Tag in Short Sale
  • SS: Grass Pickers IC x 10  Tag in Roscoe
  • R: Plank Jacks IC x 10   Tag in Short Sale

Short Sale led a very short mosey, diverting to the sculpture instead of the flag on Garrison. Mumble chatter began instantly drawing the curiosity of the PAX to this new area where he explained what was next.  Elevens on the steps with Derkins, Dips, and then 20 Box Jumps.  It was at this point he mustered just enough energy to reach over and tag in Roscoe who was in their corner holding the little rope that they have to have to make it a legal tag.  This tag was legal and so Roscoe took over and we moseyed for the flag for the Pledge.

No one Kaepernicked but there was an exception to the “hats off” portion of the Pledge.  Neon wrestling headbands were allowed.

A quick Mosey and some mumblechatter about professional wrestling and “Heartbreak Ridge” by Slaw and Def Leppard and the fact that they were first to the next spot earned them the right to add some neon flair to their bulging arms.

The PAX did a great job of checking the 6 and a quick run around the Gristmill got everyone back together for some DORA 1,2,3 at the bottom of the trail.  Partner One starts Merkins and partner two runs up the trail to the tree and does 5 SSH and returns and flip flops for 100 Merkins, 200 LBC’s, and 300 Squats.  Again, the shield lock was strong as multiple PAX helped finish off other’s counts.  At this point in the match, Roscoe was on his back and nearly pinned but with great drama and suspense, Mastodon distracted the referee and Short Sale was able to step into the ring and no tag was made but he took over as if it had.  The PAX protested but by before the referee could regain control, Short Sale had the PAX strolling along the nature trail for another part of the beatdown.

Short Sale regained control of the match at the picnic area on the backside of the trail and quickly led a 2 round series of 10 Bulgarian Squats, Dips, followed by Chilcutt Peter Parkers, and Rainbow Abs.  Confusion set in as he was out of the ring and the countdown was on.  He knew he needed help.  Stroganoff was able to grab him by his tights and push him back into the ring just before being counted out and he was able to tag in a fresh Roscoe who declared a jailbreak pace sprint back to the squared circle of the parking lot.

The newly formed tag team of Slaw and Def Leppard started a quick version of Mary while the water jug coupons were readied for the next part of the match.  When the six was collected we counted off and one group would perform with jugs and the other would do situps until it was time to switch. Lots of jug themed inappropriate mumble chatter was expected and the PAX delivered.  After all, this was a wrestling match.

Group one had two jugs and did 10 front shoulder raised with Roscoe, 10 side raises, 10 rear delt raises, and 10 shoulder shrugs.  He tagged in Short Sale who led the PAX in the same exercises while Roscoe’s team did the situps.  Short Sale gave very detailed instructions and seemed to be dragging on the match to wear down his partner who was knocking out a ton of situps.  The crowd was wondering if he was doing a heel turn.  The suspense was building but we repeated that for another round, this time with jugs and squats.  At this point in the match, there was a time limit that was closing fast and something had to be done to finish off the opponent.

Roscoe circled up the PAX for the burp and merk and laddered to 6 and then back down.  Quickly tagging in to Short Sale again, who had to begin working off the script (that is the Weinke – don’t call wrestling fake or else we’ll be forced to lay a bigger smack down next time!). Each PAX grabbed a water jug and we performed cross extensions (left hand to right ankle then fully extend for 20 single counts and flapjack for the other side. Next was another ab burner with the PAX in a seated circle, back to back, shoulder to shoulder and we did the American Hammer and passed the water jugs around in a circle to and fro.  He forgot to say “start” and most of the bottles ended up at Hushpuppy at one time.

Short Sale crawled to the corner for a finger tip tag and Roscoe leapt over the top rope and the PAX were instructed to grab jugs and hold the Iron Cross position until failure.  This was the patented finishing move that was going to win the match.  The PAX were straining and suspense was building.  The shoulders were burning.  Some PAX’s jugs were starting to fall to their sides.  It looked as if defeat was imminent and Short Sale and Roscoe would win the match.  Unfortunately and to the disappointment of the crowd, the church bells rang and saved the match.  The match was declared a draw.  The PAX had survived.  They were beaten physically but not mentally.  They had survived an hour of total non-stop physical action.

Moleskin: Props to Stroganoff for his extra credit work prior to the “match.” We welcomed two FNG’s to our region. Jim Ware at 64 years young was EH’ed by DaVinci (who failed to post: 10 burpees). Coach Ware spent over 30 years in Gaston County Schools as a coach, teacher, and principle. He is training for his second Spartan Race and hoped F3 could aid his training (we aim to please.  FNG Ware was awarded arm flare after Dora for his efforts.  . Andrew Bernard (not of The Office) relocated from Bakersfield, California, works in Charlotte, lives in Gastonia and plays guitar at a local church (my apologies for a failed memory). Billy Madison pushed hard for “Nard Dog” but his thick chin beard triggered the PAX to name him Honest Abe.

The GasHouse AO is a great spot for our various activities. Roscoe came up with the idea to stay on the property today and it was well worth it. We nearly covered 2 miles in our various jaunts around the Schiele, using the semi-circled outdoor amphitheatre and picnic area for possibly the first time. A lot of mumble chatter, mainly from the Midoriyama boys adds energy to the efforts. Additional “arm flare” was awarded to the PAX for their efforts to push their rock.

We lifted prayers for the Smith family and the Ashbrook students that lost a son and classmate. We asked for blessings upon our PAX to heal those with injuries and strengthen the rest.  Oompa Loompa is showing some real gains with his first F.  Good work and much RESPECT!

Coffeerama and the third F at Panera was strong with 6 posting and Hush Puppy leading great discussions about Acts and Billy Madison sharing a great story about faith.  #HIMS

What a privilege to perform alongside my F3 brothers. Stay tuned for a future return of this dynamic tag team duo, guaranteed to bring you pain and pleasure. We will expect the PAX to bring the custom signs when the house lights go up next time!  Whooooooooo!
