Mixmaster Pup and the Bluetooths

Beautiful day in April, 16 showed up for a musical dance of pain and suffering.  After the Disclaimer for our FNG and a short warm up of SSH x 20 IC, Imperial walkers X 15 IC, Box Cutters, Freddie Mercury’s both X 15 IC, It was time for the short mosey to the flag pole for the pledge.  From the pledge the DJ struggled with his bluetooth but after a quick reboot, Tom Sawyer began to play.

Tha Thang:

Mosey to the Baptist Church parking lot.  Was it Heresy to play Rush in a Baptist Church Parking lot?  The only heat we were getting was from the workout.  The musical lineup:

Move by Thousand Foot Krutch: From the plank position in a large circle, every time the singer says “Move”, plank walk to the right, then when he says “step into the circle”, plank rotate in a circle 360°.  then when he says “move” again, plank walk to the left. repeato until the song ends or death.

Fatboy Slim, Right here-Right now: Lunge walk across parking lot, slightly uphill.

Dillon Francis & Dj Snake-Get low: The song says “Get low” about a thousand times.  Squat (and twirk as the beat moves you) while the song says “Get low”, trying to hold the squat as long as possible.  When the beat finally drops, do squats!. What’s lower than a squat? 6″!  Repeato with 6″ and when the beat drops, do Merkins.

For some moseying music, Outkast and Hey Yah: Mosey to soft grassy spot at the Presbyterian Church for some Tub Thumping.

Chumbawumba: Tub Thumping.  Every time he says “I get knocked down, and I get up again” you do a burpee!  In between, do SSH.

Now it’s time for a slow jam: Moby, Bring Sally up.  Squat when the song says “Bring sally down” and stand up when the song says “bring sally up”.  Simple, right?  You bet.  You’ll never forget a dance with Sally.

Next up: Theme song from Rocky:  Over to the wall for some Hip slappers IC x 10 (cadence called by Squirt), then some Dirkins IC x 10 (called by Dolf), then to the curbs for Rocky Balboa’s (toe taps) IC X 20.  Repeato!  Finished out 2 sets of these just as the song ended.

To the round about in front of the church for some Mosey-go-round.

Hearts on Fire:  Take a lap round the circle, every time you pass the Cross, do a Burpee or Merkin.  2nd time round, do 2.  3rd time around, do 3, and so on. Once the song completed there was about 8 minutes remaining and we began the mosey back to  the Schiele.

Finality:  Wall sits and overhead presses until “let the bodies hit the floor” finished, then back to the start for Mary (LBC’s, Freddy Mercury, Mountain Climbers, Dying Cockroach).

Welcome Joe, FNG Captain D!  In my dehydrated delirium I failed to get his info but I will track him down!

Announcements: Community Foundation 5K 4/8 at the Rotary Pavilion Downtown, Race begins at 9am. Plenty of time for the DRP before hand!  Mud Run in May, Sign up!

Need Q’s at TheStorm!

We didn’t want to miss the Friday workout

Yea, betimes will the selfless structure soar in stature once more to that lofty nod Nature intended?  Hold on, that isn’t the way I wanted to start this BB.

Last September when I Q’d downtown for the BRR tribute I had only two vans of PAX and with drivers for 36 “legs” of exercises.  Each leg had a number of miles which I rounded up to make the reps and each PAX gave me an exercise so I had a nice spreadsheet to go by.

I anticipated doing the same thing with the P200.  This year I proudly report that there are not one but two Gashouse teams for the Palmetto 200.  Unfortunately it is much too complicated for me to figure out individual PAX’s favorite (or least favorite) exercises that I would inflict on the PAX in order of the legs of the P200.  However Slaw #HIM sent me the list of names and the legs they ran and I put them into the P200 spreadsheet and made up the exercises for the PAX because it wouldn’t be fair to include some favorites and not others and it was way too much trouble to try to get a response from that many PAX in a short week.  That being said, I just focused on what our Nantan Freight (or Frank) likes.  I know that our Nantan loves the Joe Hendricks.

After putting in a modest amount of effort for a decent tribute Weinke, I forgot to print it yesterday and with very little sleep last night worrying about it had to Q the workout on the fly.  Here is what happened, more or less.

Thank goodness for Squirt’s offspring and their motivation for F3 at 0530 or we would have only had four PAX this morning.  I offered a brief disclaimer and we started right on time.

We immediately stood for the Pledge of Allegiance.  The warm up consisted of the following:  Inchworms, high knees, buttkickers, left and right Karaoke, Imperial Walkers, and Merkins.  There was a lonesome train whistle in the distance so we did 5 burpees just as we started to mosey to the bridge.  We crossed the bridge as the train moved underneath and lunge walked back across.  This was reminiscent of Whoopee’s workout he did for Hot for Teacher where we never ran and never left the parking lot and lunged everywhere with Chinooks thrown in.  #awful   There is a trellis type structure above the train tracks to prevent jumpers and we collectively opined that perhaps Papa John or Smalls could use the railing for pullups in the future.

We moseyed to the steps at the Conference Center for two sets of calf raises (50 oyo) in honor of Gastone.  Then an ab set on the steps including 6” hold, Flutters, Homer/Marge, and the protractor, followed by another set of pigeon toed calf raises.

Then into the parking deck for the bulk of the race.  We started at the ground level with a sprint, 10 8 Ct Bodybuilders for Monk, Lunge walks, bear crawls, up the inclines, more lunge walks, and suicides for Defib.  Whoopee informed us that Defib wasn’t running because today is his anniversary.  Happy Anniversary Defib!

We then had a short mosey to the top incline for Joe Hendricks reps.  Since there were six of us the first PAX would climb the incline and return to the PAX and tag in the next guy.  Unfortunately for Smalls Squirt went up the hill first.  Smalls was in ready position on all fours with his six in the air ready to attack the incline backwards bear style when upon returning Squirt treated Smalls to what can only be described as Corporal Punishment.  No one wanted anything like that to happen to them so we resorted to touching hands instead of the six to “tag in”.  Each Pax ascended and descended the incline for a round and continued on.  YHC thought it was taking too long so we formed two lines and continued two at a time.  Squirt started moving his 2.0’s into his line and broke down the format.  Eventually the PAX were reduced to irritated, stumbling messes with bodies on the ground and an audible was in order and it was VERY well received.   Thanks Freight!  #crowdpleaser

We then performed Hip Slappers for Whoopee even though he wasn’t running the P200 and was at the workout.  Backwards lunges up the last incline to the top of the deck for zombie walks across.  Whoopee reminded us of what it was like for the men running the P200.  Getting very little sleep but keeping up the motivation to run each leg because your team counts on you.  Aye!

Then we partnered up for some merkin work.  P1 sprints to the other side of the deck for 20 merkins and P2 planks.  P2 then sprints and does 18 merkins, descending count until we hit two.  We then moseyed back to start and knocked out another five burpees for another train going by.  The burpees just happened to be the 36th leg of the P200 and we finished right on time!

Smalls had a prayer request for a safe trip to Carowinds.  We prayed for the PAX at the P200 for safety from accidents and injuries.  We prayed for those on the DL/IR.

If you want to go fast, go alone.  If you want to go far, go together.
I look forward to the updates throughout the race and wish all the PAX a safe and joyous experience.

Beauty and Beast

OK guys, it’s not the (after) Christmas party, but we are getting there. After some thought, I wanted to appeal to both the beauty (ToolTime) and beast (Smalls) tendencies of our pax. I have 2 options and hope you will be interested in both. There will be both culture and testosterone involved so hopefully we will have a good showing for this. The details are not final for both events, but I wanted to make sure to get this out with time to get some feedback for the second event.

Event A: APRIL 8 AT 130 PM, maybe lunch before-TBD by those attending, bring 2.0

Beauty and the Beast: musical/play at Gaston Day School on April 8 at 1:30pm, tickets $15 for adult, $10 for students, get tickets online at gdsshowtickets@gastonday.org or www.carolinatix.org The show is several days and I will likely be at most of them since my daughter is in the show. GDS has a great fine arts department and all the shows I have gone to have been excellent. It is a great time to take your 2.0 and get a little culture to show them you are not a Neanderthal all the time. GET YOUR TICKETS ONLINE NOW AS THE SHOWS OFTEN SELL OUT.

Event B: DATE TBD

Beast without the Beauty-Skeet/sporting clay shooting sometime in May on a Saturday afternoon at a farm/field/front yard/back yard/Martha Rivers park if we can’t find somewhere else. We will need some clay throwers and sporting clays so let me know if you have a thrower. Would be great to add in a grill and cook up some hamburgers but that will depend on where we end up doing this. I will work on the location but need the clay throwers so if you have one, let me know.

I NEED EVERYONE TO SPREAD THE WORD ON THIS AS NOT EVERYONE IS ON TWITTER. SHARE AT COT WHEN YOU POST.

thanks-Whoopee

Brothers

34 HIMS showed up in the rain for the Gastonia Region convergence. Tuesday 3/21 marks the 2nd anniversary of Gashouse starting. Thank you to all that put in the work to make this happen! A lot has happened over the last 2 years. Just over a year ago we became a region and have grown so much since then. We decided to start having a convergence once a quarter because so many of us barely cross paths. It was an honor to get to work with you men this morning! So Sargento and I devised a plan and I’m happy to say it worked out pretty well. It was a little iffy when the Belmont PD showed up. Some concerned neighbors thought someone let the crazies out in downtown. From their perspective a bunch of men running all around yelling in the rain normally would be cause for concern. Brownstreak and I assured the officer no harm was afoot and properly tried to put the EH on. FYI when the police approach it’s probably not a good idea to take off running even if you are starting up a series of 11’s. But hey I understand. You’ve gotta get your work done.

Warmup:

Sargento did a great job leading this crazy bunch to get us started. This is not an easy task.

Sealjacks x somewhere between 10-20ic

Morroccan Nightclubs x 20ic

Don Q’s x 10ic Wait where is Tooltime? It’s dark does anyone see him. You don’t hear him do you?!

Goofballs x 20ic To any passer by’s this must look like a group you would want to join.

Count off into 2 groups. Group 1 went with Sargento to the track and group 2 joined me at the Pavilion.

The Thang:

We had four things planned. After each group would finish we would switch.

The Track-Burpee Mile-Run a lap do 12 burpees, Rinse and repeat 4 times.

Pavilion-Crazy Lazy Dora-Partner up. Do 200 Peter Parkers in sets of 50(Partner holds a plank while you exercise. 300 Flutters in sets of 50(partner holds 6″). 400 LBC’s in sets of 50(Partner does hallelujahs)

The Hill-11’s starting with 1 squat at the bottom and 10 WWI’s at the top

Mid Field-8 cones about 10 yards apart. Bear crawl to the 1st cone and do 5 sumo squat jumps, crabwalk to the 2nd cone and do 5 sumo squat jumps. Rinse and repeat down and back.

During a few of the exchanges we met back up for some additional partner work as a whole group.Partner Derkin-both hold the plank while one partner puts his feet on the back of the other and does 20 merkins. Sqericans?-hold partners feet in the wheelbarrow position and do 20 merkins and 20 squats at the same time.

We did have a train come through so we added 5 burpee’s OYO.

We met back up under the pavilion and added in 10 Bobby Hurley’s since it’s March madness and 10 more burpee’s so Dolph would calm down.

Around 20 nearly shut down Cherubs for breakfast.. I think a few may still be there.

Moleskin:

I’m now really excited about the next convergence. The smaller workout groups do a lot for us but it is great to be out in numbers like this every once in a while. A special thanks to Sargento for letting me Co-Q this thang with him.

So remember guys lock your shields together, carry your sword, move forward together and engage your enemies with and for each other.

March Hoops

5 regulars showed up for my first Q and were welcomed with a doozy. It was a cold, wet, gloomy start to the day yet the real warriors showed up to support one of their own and push the rock another day. Thank you to those who came out to support my first Q, it was a learning experience and it pushed me.  The fart sack claimed many this day but the faithful always show up and it was appreciated.

The Accumulator

2 FNGs and 7 regulars showed in the gloom and 40 degree weather at the Goat, while many of the usual suspects were warm in their fartsacks.  Train passed right on time and we did 5 Burpees before immediately at start.  Full disclaimer was given with emphasis on anyone following YHC was in fact an idiot.  Time was going to be tight today, as is for most of YHCs workouts, so lets move.

Warm Up:

No time in the schedule for a workout, I know big surprise here right. Long mosey over the bridge, across the island, over the second bridge and end in the parking lot.

The Thang:

The Accumulator:  Perform exercise 1 for 1 minute and rest 30 seconds. Perform exercise 2 for 1 minute and exercise 1 for 1 minute, then rest 30 seconds.  Continue accumulating exercises until 7 are preformed.  Workout went like this…

  • 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 30 seconds of rest
  • 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 30 seconds of rest
  • 60 seconds of Merkins, 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 30 seconds of rest
  • 60 seconds of Plank w/ alternating side raises, 60 seconds of Merkins, 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 30 seconds of rest
  • 60 seconds of Crunchy Frogs, 60 seconds of Plank w/ alternating side raises, 60 seconds of Merkins, 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 120 seconds of moseying (to entrance of first bridge and back)
  • 60 seconds of Side Straddle Hop, 60 seconds of Crunchy Frogs, 60 seconds of Plank w/ alternating side raises, 60 seconds of Merkins, 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees
    • 120 seconds of moseying (to entrance of first bridge and back)
  • 60 seconds of CDDs, 60 seconds of Side Straddle Hop, 60 seconds of Crunchy Frogs, 60 seconds of Plank w/ alternating side raises, 60 seconds of Merkins, 60 seconds of Squats & 60 seconds of Burpees

As 3 or maybe 4 trains passed during the Accumulator, YHC told everyone to ensure they preformed at least 15 Burpees in the last minute of exercise.  We are right on time and have to hurry and mosey back to the start.  Luckily for all in attendance a train took us out as well, 5 more Burpees.

Pledge

Announcements:

  • Palmetto 200 is a few weeks away.
  • Meet at Goat Island for disk golf on Saturday.
  • Burpathon and Mud Run coming up!

Prayer Request:

Thanks to those who braved the gloom and pushed me once again today.  We don’t fight off the fartsack for ourselves, we fight it off for our brothers in the gloom.

It’s a great day

Last night I decided to use Village Ridge Drive for the workout since everyone loves it (at least that’s what I think).  After a short warm-up with side straddle hops, Imperial walkers and LBC’s, we moseyed to the hill.  While on the way, at each street corner we knocked out 5 burpees.

Once we arrived, we ran backwards to the cul-de-sac and did 50 flutters.  We made it back to the bottom we partnered up.  While one partner did lunges to the second mailbox, the second partner did double merkin burpees.

While running to parking lot on Neal Hawkins, we had to stop and complete 20 LBC’s at each side street.

Once at the parking lot, everyone found their partners and did merkin ladders from 10-1 with high fives.  Then and Indian Run to the ATM and back.

Since we were there some dips were needed and then moseyed to the bank where some more burpees fulfilled everyone’s needs.  Balboa’s were followed by flutters and the workout was complete.

March 3rd F Preblast, The Lord is my Shepherd

As I contemplated the theme for the month of March I struggled a little bit. It’s not exactly ripe with themes like Easter or love.  I prayed and asked the Lord, “what message do you have for the Men of Gastonia this month?”.  Softly in my spirit I was reminded of Psalm 121,

“I lift my eyes toward the mountains.
Where will my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.”

There has been much hurt in our brotherhood of late.  Brothers have lost brothers, mothers, fathers; battled cancer, stared death in the face and comforted the inconsolable.  Also, some have finished races they never imagined they would even start; some have broken ground on new adventures and stood atop mountains they never believed they could climb.  I want to remind my brothers the promise that the God gave in Jeremiah 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you”-“plans for your welfare, not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. 12 You will call to Me and come and pray to Me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart.”

The theme for March will be “The Lord is my Shepherd”.  When we have stood against what seems like hell on earth; when we have stared loss and death in the face, our only hope is to be reminded of the promise that God will be with us throughout our battles.

Week 1: 3/4/17, Read and discuss Psalm 121.  Some questions for discussion: Why does the writer say to look toward the mountain?  Why does the sun, giver of light and warmth double as a tormentor? How important is it that the Lord will protect you now and forever?  Do we think of forever, or only now?

Week 2: 3/11/17, Read  and discuss Psalm 23.  In verse 2 and 3 the Lord leads and guides.  In verse 4 we walk, and the rod and staff are referenced.  What difference do you think the writer may have been implying?  What is special about eating in the presence of his enemies?  What peace do the final verses promise those who submit to the shepherd?

Week 3: 3/18/17, Convergence week at the Yank.  Psalm 133: “133 Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!”  Unity is likened to the due on the mountains and like precious oil.  How is this applicable today, and what is the importance of the commanded blessing?

Week 4: 3/25/17 Romans 8: 31-39 “Nothing can separate us. . .” this powerful promise from the Apostle Paul reminds us of the hope we have in our salvation!  Why can we be sure nothing will separate us from God’s love?

My hope is that your faith will be strengthened in these verses; that through the shield lock you will walk in victory.  Post!  Reach out to your brothers in need and Always Be Headlocking!

Burpees & Leg Day

9 Pax braved the gloom at The Fighting Yank this morning to push the rock.  All seasoned vets here so light disclaimer given.  I don’t think I’m an idiot, but you probably are if you follow me…

Warm Up:

No time allowed for a warmup today, lets get moving and get warm.

The Thang:

Modified Bataan Death March: AKA: Merkin Catch Me If You Can Indian Run…A combination of Catch Me If You Can and a traditional Indian Run. The last person drops and does 5 Merkins, while the rest of the Pax mosey in a line. After completing the Merkins, the last guy runs to catch the group, tapping the (new) last Pax on the shoulder, who then stops to begin his 5 Merkins, while the (former) last guy continues on to the front of the line. We completed 1 plus some change miles of this in a nice loop around Belmont. Everyone enjoyed being the last man at least 8 times.  Good work by all Hims completing the run on schedule in 12 minutes!  Nothing better than being on time!

Finished our jog/mosey up at the football field for to continue the workout.  Up next YHC planned some good old fashioned burpee work to help prep the Gashouse pax for the upcoming burpathon!

Burpee Pyramid: 100 burpees in 10 minutes.  10 sets of burps started on each minutes with any time left over as rest.  Did sets of: 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8.  Mumble chatter was pretty low for this, but that was probably more due to lack of breath than lack of want to chatter.

Next up 4 rounds of exercises followed by a lap around the track.  Each round consisted of 6 minutes of exercise.  Following rounds were completed non stop with any rest noted.

  • Round 1: (Really started to feel the burn in the first squat hold here.  Lots of mumble chatter and YHC had to have the pax raise the hands above their heads on the hold to keep people for cheating)
    • Squat for 30 seconds, hold low squat for 30 seconds
    • Squat for 40 seconds, hold low squat for 40 seconds
    • Squat for 50 seconds, hold low squat for 50 seconds
    • Squat for 60 seconds, hold low squat for 60 seconds
  • Round 2:
    • 45 seconds of Merkins, 15 seconds rest
    • 45 seconds of Merkin hand release, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of Merkin hand lift, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of right side plank, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of left side plank, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of shoulder taps, 15 seconds of rest
  • Round 3: (Since we had some pax from other AOs visit today, YHC had different pax introduce themselves during the rest periods)
    • 45 seconds of side straddle hop, 15 seconds rest
    • 45 seconds of seal jacks, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of plank jacks, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of side straddle hop, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of seal jacks, 15 seconds of rest
    • 45 seconds of plank jacks, 15 seconds of rest
  • Round 4: (YHC gave the pax the option to repeat round 1 or round 2.  I was surprised pax chose round 1 from all the mumble chatter we had the first go around)

Finished up last lap around the track and moseyed down the hill to the flag to finish out!
