Folsom

Well… it’s been a while since I’ve posted at a boot camp, much less Q one. I told my fellow pax in mid August that I was gonna back off on boot camps for a while and concentrate more on running until a half at the end of October. Montross put the schedule out last week and I took advantage of the opportunity.

I rolled into Folsom a few minutes early to see only a couple vehicles, 530 hits and so three men get after it!

SSH-15 ic

Toy soldiers- 15ic

Grab a block and head to the tennis courts!

25 Blockies- make a lap around the courts

50- tricep extensions- make a lap

75- curls- make a lap

100- shoulder presses- lap

125- squats- lap

150- LBCs- lap

The three of us broke a sweat, I could tell I haven’t picked those blocks in a while, but it felt good! We had some good mumble chatter, Stogie had to take off a couple minutes early, Bedpan and myself had a chance to talk for a minute and then close it out in prayer!

Pavilion Chili Cookoff Pre-Blast

Bathrooms coming soon to the Pavilion!

The Rotary Centennial Pavilion has been home to the F3 Downtown workout since July of 2015, a few short months after the F3 Gastonia launch.  E4 was the original site Q before he handed it off to the elusive Spiderman who then turned over the reins to Bedpan.  By my calculations, F3 has posted over 200 Friday workouts at the Pavilion besides running through the site during our three 50 mile relays.

The big cheese, Sargento, happens to be the Nantan of the Gastonia Rotary Club this year.  Both Gastonia Rotary Clubs are raising money to install public bathrooms at the Pavilion soon.  Bathrooms would be a great thing for downtown as well as for any F3 PAX who routinely run late to the workout due to those “emergencies”.  (you know who you are)

To raise money for the bathrooms, the Gastonia Rotary Club is hosting a Chili Cook Off on November 2nd of this year.  I am aware that you should probably have bathrooms installed before eating chili but I am not in charge.  There are four levels of sponsorships, with $1000.00 being the “Four Alarm” sponsor.  I propose giving back to the Pavilion and raising money for this cause.  F3 Gastonia can assist in raising money for the bathrooms and if we meet our goal sooner rather than later we will be recognized in all advertisements and social media, leading to more exposure for F3 and hopefully draw in some FNG’s.

I am calling on all site Q’s to collect donations from PAX throughout the month of September until we reach our goal of $1000.00.  PAX may contribute cash or checks (made payable to the Rotary Club of Gastonia).  The good news is Diablo Sammich has already said they were going to raise $100, and that was immediately countered with a $150 pledge from the PUB.  The Coconut Horse then said they would raise $151.

The purpose will be to raise awareness of F3Gastonia and support the community through adding an amenity to the premier Friday AO in our region.

This initiative is “Nantan approved” as well as “Site Q approved”.  If each PAX that posts contributes something we should reach our goal in short order.  F3 is free so there is no obligation to give but Site Q’s please take up the collections and let’s hit this goal and put F3Gastonia on more men’s radars in our region.

Aye!

Persistence at Folsom

10 Strong at a warm, humid Dallas N.C. AO ready for an old man Q. No FNG’s, let’s go!
SSH x 15 IC
Low Slow Squats x 15 IC
Cotton Pickers x 15 IC
Moroccan Night Clubs x 15 IC
Pledge
Mosey down to the bottom picnic shelter where an obese Chihuahua had taken over while his owner read a book. Despite the dog’s protest, we started our Arms and Cardio Laps. It went like this.
Dips x 10 (in shelter)
Mosey to bottom of parking lot SSH x 10
Mosey near the ampitheatre sidewalk for 10 burpees
Mosey to the top of the parking lot for 10 Monkey Humpers
Mosey into the top picnic shelter for 10 Derkins
Mosey back out to the parking lot for 10 Seal Jacks
Mosey a little further down the parking lot for 10 Mike Tysons
Mosey to the bottom rest room steps for Step Ups or Calf Raises x 10
Back to the bottom picnic shelter to repeat the lap.
All exercises in cadence except burpees and Mike Tysons.
We did 4 laps and stayed together and several guys helped me call the cadence.

Mosey to the tennis courts for Rugby Sprints (Abs and Core).
Start on 2nd court, exercise until I say Sprint then sprint 2 courts, sprint 2 courts back and then mosey 2 courts for the next exercise. We did Flutters, Freddies, Oblique Crunch Right, Oblique Crunch Left, American Hammers, Hello Dollies, Dying Cockroaches and penguins always more than 10 reps. Gump was flying on the sprints! It is sometimes difficult to yell “Sprint” loudly this morning. This would have been the perfect occasion for using Freight’s gym teacher whistle.

Mosey to the fork in the road and get a modified Dora in. Partner up for 100 CDD’s, 100 Hillbillies and 100 Squats with running a short lap around the fork / triangle in the road. Back to the flag where Pizza Man led 22 for the vets and we’re done and Buckeye changed his sweat-saturated shoes.

I spoke about persistence and how nothing in the world can take the place of persistence to solve problems. Keep pushing to be better men in fitness, fellowship and faith!

Fear Inoculum

One of the great things about Folsom is that when you show up you feel welcome and right at home.  There were several EC options this morning.  Pizza Man led a run with four PAX at 0540 and Whoopee and Stroganoff led the Ruck EC a little before six with two additional PAX.  Sparky was fashionably late and went for a run and unfortunately missed the group picture.

We got back from the ruck at 0628 but with plenty of time to get in line for roll call with 17 PAX.

We began with a brief disclaimer and lots of mumblechatter.  The warm up consisted SSH, Merkins, LBC’s, and Squats.  Then we moseyed to a nearby parking lot and planked for the six.  It was during this time that I realized the pavement was terrible and the new asphalt nearby would suffice for the workout.  We moseyed to that lot.

Ten jump squats on one end of the parking lot, run to the other side for 5 burpees.  The burpees stay the same but the jump squats descend to 1.  There was some rock pushing going on here with some PAX well ahead of others.  Those that finished first began a little Mary with ab work.

Mosey to the Tennis Courts for Dora.  A quick word about the CSPAN podcast regarding Gastonia’s own Painlab.  #Inclusion equals growth

P1 begins the exercise while P2 runs the length of the 4 courts and back and switch for cumulative reps of:

100 Monkey Humpers, 150 Merkins, 200 Seal Jacks, 250 Squats.

Mosey to the flag pole and plank for the six.  Pledge of Allegiance  then core time:

20 Homer/Marge, 10 Big boi situps

30 American Hammers, 10 Big Boi Situps

30 LBC’s, 50 flutter kicks, 20 Big Boi situps

Mosey to the steps at the horse track.  Lunge walk the entire length then one set up step ups x20.

Mosey back to start and conclude at 0730 sharp.  Great work!  A little over 3 miles and lots of reps and mumblechatter.

Announcements:  PizzaMan shared a word about the August 17th (next Saturday) remembrance for his niece.  1000-1200 at Rankin Lake.  Bring your families for a run around the lake and learn more about their future plans.

YHC took us out in Prayer.

It was another great day in the AO of Folsom and #NOGA.

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

How can I Accelerate?

If you’ve never posted on a Saturday at Folsom, the best way to describe the experience is….entertaining. The mumble chatter is always plentiful, someone is typically being called out for their poor form or inability to properly count reps, the air is ripe with the pungent aroma of multiple PAX expelling the remnants of their last meal, and the workouts will leave you exhausted and ready for the fellowship to follow at the Country Kitchen. This day would prove to be no different as 21 PAX gathered in the newly paved (kinda sorta) parking lot to get the weekend started.

No FNG’s so the quick version of the disclaimer. Imperial Walkers x10IC, SSH’s x10IC and Moroccan Nightclubs while we waited on those coming in hot. Another Folsom fact, someone will always be coming in late (usually Sparky).

Whenever I have the Q, I try to leave the PAX with a thought, verse or other words that they will hopefully be able to take with them and use to become better. The focus of today was Accelerate and at various points during the workout I wanted to offer the PAX ideas of how to accelerate their personal growth.

Point #1 – To accelerate you have to believe in yourself, if you don’t you’re going to struggle. You must believe in where you are going before anyone else can.

Mosey out of the parking lot and head toward the main entrance. Make a stop at the fork in the road for 25 American Hammer’s, 25 Flutter Kick’s and 25 Mountain Climbers all IC. Rinse and repeat when we get to the flag. While we’re here let’s go ahead and get the pledge.

Point #2 – To accelerate ask friends to hold you accountable. These friends need to be part of your inner circle and not afraid to let you know when you’re under performing or changing for the worse. Listen to their feedback.

Let’s mosey across to the parking lot for….The Cooper. 10 Burpee’s, 10 Squats, 10 Merkins then a lap around the parking lot. Next round 9,9,9 and a lap all the way down to 1,1,1. This is a tough routine and Gump was out front making it look easy. SA and Seuss weren’t far behind and I believe most made it all the way through before YHC called time to move on to something else.

Point #3 – To accelerate find a mentor. This should be someone you have a genuine connection with and value spending time with. Both of you must be willing to discuss things that may seem difficult in order for it to work.

Mosey back to the fork in the road and this time, 25 LBC’s IC, 10 Big Boys OYO and 10 Oblique Crunches each side. Head down Sportsman Drive to where the trail splits off and repeat the above. This was about the point where Volt started to question YHC’s choice of locations for ab work. I think he’s fond of the new asphalt, but part of the allure of Folsom is the way you feel during the post workout shower when you realize you have road rash on some unfortunate parts of your body.

Point #4 – To accelerate you must feed your brain. Read books, listen to podcasts, study materials, etc. related to what you are trying to accomplish.

Let’s head to the amphitheatre. PAX choice of route, straight shot or take the long way around the pond and through the parking lot. Partner up and wheelbarrow to the sidewalk where both PAX perform the called exercise, then mosey back to the bottom. Swap places on the wheelbarrow and repeat. 25 SSH first round and 25 Seal Jacks for Round 2.

Point #5 – To accelerate you must learn to appreciate more. Appreciate your loved ones, friends, work, freedoms and all your blessings. Gain positive energy through appreciation.

3 rounds of 10 Dips, 10 Derkins and 20 Rocky Balboa’s then back to the start.

COT/BOM

Whetstone, Q Source, COT’s, etc. are all tools available through F3 to help you accelerate. When you’re accelerating you are changing patterns and habits and it’s going to take time. Give it a chance and push through the difficult times.

Thanks to Montross for reaching out and offering me the chance to Q. Folsom is one of the many great AO’s in our region and the Country Kitchen never disappoints. It was great to see the legendary Huckleberry back out in the gloom this morning, we’ve missed you brother! Tclaps to all the PAX for pushing the rock and helping me to accelerate. The Cooper is probably my least favorite routine and there’s no way I would have called it if I didn’t have you guys continuing to push me to get better.

I’m Broke

Kotter Q

It has been a long time since the Slaw had Q’d anywhere. I finally got off my useless butt and picked up a Q at Folsom (thanks for the push, site Q). It was a humid morning at Folsom, and I was anxious to see how many PAX (if any) would post. I was happy to see 10 of my Folsom brothers show up for my Kotter Q. I was going to keep it simple and get back to basics. 5:30 rolls around. Time to get started.

Warmup:

  • Don Q x 10
  • Grass Pickers x 10
  • Seal Jacks x 10 IC
  • Hillbillies x 10

Thang:

Mosey to the Flag at the top while stopping at the speed bumps for 5 Burpees at each one.

10 LBC’s IC led by Sparky then the Pledge

Short mosey to the parking lot beside the AG center for Deck Of Death. With an old school deck of cards, we shuffled them up and then placed them in the circle of PAX. Each PAX drew a card and all performed the exercise. Exercises were: Spades- Merkins, Clubs- Squats, Diamonds- CDD’s, Hearts- Flutter Kicks(IC). Jokers were left in the mix for 10 Burpees apiece. I had forgotten how much fun this workout was. Mumblechatter was lively. After completing the deck, we moseyed back to the flag, making sure to stop at the speed bump for 5 Burpees. With 4 minutes to go, I pulled up Moby’s “Flower” (Bring Sally up) song. we performed Leg Lifts/ Six inch leg hold for the duration. Real crowd pleaser for sure! When song was complete, 45 minutes of work was in the books.

Announcements:
