hybrid is born

Woody had NUOS this am and apparently a lot of people wanted to shutup (1 word there Sargento). We had 3 decide to Nut Up (again, Sargento, 2 words) so we got to work at 6 with some good stuff. Rather than waste his hard work on just 3 of us, we (the NUOS crowd) figured it would be a good idea to offer an option of combining the PainLab and Bootcamp and use Woody’s ideas with a hybrid type of workout (not really boot camp and not really PainLab, more of a combination or hybrid type of workout). When Tube arrived (PainLab Q for today), he was open to this so keep on reading and you will see what we did.

We started with a quick disclaimer after briefly combining some input on how to do this and thankfully Tube was all on board. Next was the Pledge then we took off for the track and field at Grier with a short mosey then (as promised) we did not run up the hill. Instead, we nurred up the hill to get to the track while the Pax eagerly awaited the instructions. This workout brought back memories of that famous Pax of long ago named Dolph. If I remember correctly, there were songs written about him…..but that is a story for another time. Dolph had a workout (at least once maybe more) called Dolph’s World with a lot of fun exercises. Ask an old guy sometime about this and maybe he can tell you more. Woody had some good stuff set up that we used and modified a little. There were several stations and each pax took a spot and did the exercise then rotated to another. Tube had an ab station with music. There was a tire-flip station, off-set kettlebell station that you did Farmer’s carry, a sandbag lateral-ish backward toss, another kettlebell over-the-head toss station, a squat-thruster telephone pole station, and finally a mosey/run/nur station (dealer’s choice for how to get around the rest of the track). We each went a couple of times through during the first half of the workout. The tire flipping was the best station with the sandbag toss as a close runner up in my opinion. However, the farmer’s carry was pretty tough also. We need to do this again in my opinion.

I moved back to my planned Weinke sponsored by the Letter B after getting sufficiently smoked with the stations. We moved to the hill by the baseball field and I assigned exercises to individuals so I would not have to remember much. We did 3 rounds of exercises then mosey or bear crawled up the hill for some BB situps. The exercises were as follows: 5 Burpees, 10 Big Boys, 15 Bobby Hur……wait, Bonnie Blairs (had to be there with Hushpuppy), 20 Bobby Hurleys, 25 Bicycles (Freddie Mercury). After finishing each cycle, we capped it all off with Body Slappers (AKA hip slappers) just for fun.

While we did all the above, Oompa ran laps around the track. He mentioned he had a little summer cold and wanted to push the rock without infecting others so we gave him some space.

This got us to just about time so we collected the toys then moseyed back to start for some Mary. Oompa threw in 22 for the Vets so we don’t forget about those guys.

We closed out with the COT then about 5 of us headed over for breakfast.

Linus and I were talking after all the above and he mentioned how much he enjoys this and missing a weekend because of work means you really miss 2 weeks. That is time you don’t get back. That is time that, for whatever reason, your guys don’t have you to lean on. Remember that. Remember the good feelings you have had after finishing a tough workout and how good that feels not only for yourself, but also when that guy (maybe you) opens up and shares something they are struggling with to the group. When you are not there, the group is a little bit smaller and maybe “that guy” is not going to feel comfortable opening up and quietly SCREAMING for help with whatever problem he has going on in his life. Make this time count. Get better and get the guy next to you better. We have others we can try to lean on, but be honest, do you? Is it the same? Get out and HC that guy that you’ve been meaning to HC for the last year. I am not sure who needs it more, him, you……or me?

One more little nugget….Turtleman is almost finished with chemo. He is in his final stretch. Keep him in your prayers.

Enjoyed it this am guys, thanks for the opportunity to Q-Whoopee

early ruck

(Un) Fortunately Bubba Sparks, Gavel, and Rebar took me up on the old “starting at 0600 but I’ll show up earlier if anyone wants” plan.  They suggested 0530 so I couldn’t fartsack and leave them hanging. We took off towards Martha’s then circled back to make sure no one showed up at 0600. We saw JJ a couple times getting an early run in before church. Buckeye and Sargento were also getting a few extra miles in. As my kids would say, Buckeye’s fit was bussin.  In other words, his outfit was sharp. He claimed to be “colorblind” but that was clearly not the issue. Sargento was sporting a cup of Joe when he arrived.  I don’t think I get runners. Between the pre-run coffee and “bussin fits” I just don’t get it. Maybe that is the point though…..Sometimes I think I could be a runner or that I am a “runner” but then stuff like this happens and it makes me reconsider. At least for now, I am a rucker. Initially this was out of necessity due to injuries, but I really think these are my people. Between the NUOS workouts and Coconut Horse and other rucking AOs , it just feels right………where was I? Back to the BB…..We had 4 ruckers, a bunch of runners, did a variety of routes, then ended with COT.

Q Source starts next week with Cowboy Ethics. Today we had a great discussion that lasted longer than expected. We have quoted Jocko so many times over the last few years. I found a list of “Powerful Jocko Willink Quotes to Motivate Leaders.” We ran through a few of these and pretty much everyone chimed in with something. If you search the above quote on the interwebs and take a look.

Thanks for another great morning-Whoopee

BTW…..has anyone seen Gastone?

DS

Thought I had already done this but I must be mistaken. We did pledge, WU, then moseyed ALMOST to Waffle House and back, Tube showed up for COT because he overslept but still posted for solo ruck. COT at the end. Lot of good fellowship along the way. I did my best to keep up with Voodoo who is a speedster. Castlerock and HIPAA solved the world’s problems while pulling up the 6. Tube was on another route all alone but getting it done anyway.

Been too long for me to remember who did what, forgot about BB until Watts Up reminded me so thanks for the reminder. Some ran, some rucked, all of us sweated a bunch. Good to see Udders-he’s an honorary GasHouse Pax even though he does not live here. As I used to hear growing up….he’s good people.

No Q on the schedule? No problem. We got to work with quick warmup then rucked on over to the parking lot. Each of us picked an exercise and did some suicides with the light posts and at each far end did the 5 different exercises as follows: (I think, not sure I remember it correctly) 10 Merkins, 10 Side Lunges, 10 Squats, 10 Big Boy Sit ups, 20 Flutter Kicks. We worked our way across the lot then when our Time Counter Extraordinaire, AKA Lester G. Nessman, alerted us, we headed back to base for quick pledge and COT.

Good work men.

15….10 Commandments

NUOS this am was good. I don’t mind saying it, even if it sounds like I am bragging. I had fun, and it was tough. We had a good crowd, but I think there are more that could make it and do fine-don’t be intimidated. It’s basically like a regular F3 workout but with coupons…..lots of coupons. We even have a 75# iPhone.

We started with a warmup: 25 big boys, ruck warmup with count of 20 doing upright rows, military press, bent rows, and squats for total of 3 sets.  We loaded up the toys and moved to the track for some fun with the sand bag and stuff. All had rucks on the whole time which I really did not think about until now. We took turns with different toys but the beast was the sand bag toss. Pick up sandbag and throw it. Walk over to sand bag and repeat. Do this as fast and far as you can. Other pax picked up toys and walked half of a lap then put toys down and then went back to save the bag tosser. When we reached the bag tosser, we all dropped and did 10 merkins with ruck on. Someone else started with the sandbag while the other four pax  lunged back to the toys and swapped places. Those 4 then picked up the toys and continued around the track for another half lap. At each half lap the four pax went back for the bag tosser. The toys were the following: 5 gallon bucket with unknown liquid content weighing somewhere between 25 and 100 #, 50# kettle bell, 2 kettle bells weighing approximately 20 # each, or wheelbarrow with about 180# in it (including 75# iPhone playing some bangin’ music that Roscoe loved). We did this for about 30 minutes then took a lap with just the rucks then called it a day for the NUOS workout.

A few notes from the above:

1-Holy nuts that was tough.

2-Rudolph’s new nickname is CATAPULT. Dang, he was throwing that bag like a boss.

3-the weight, toys, and ruck sacks are an equalizer. I think all of us were tired after this, even those pax who are usually machines (ahem, Defib).

4-Watts up is still a beast. He took the glory leg on the sandbag and rocked it.

5-Roscoe still doesn’t complain. I’ll have to get something harder next time just for him.

6-Whoopee can hit a 10# rolling weight at a full sprint with a ruck sack on with a piece of granite like a dog after a squirrel. Britches beware-you have been warned. We now have both a 9 and a 1 # weight. You’re welcome.

Come out next week. I heard Tiger busted them up pretty good in F’ing Yank this am also.

NUOS

GrowRuck is coming (? some time in August if I remember correctly)-get signed up then show up for some EC with your ruck. Every Saturday we will have a few options. Today it was GasHouse and The Yank. We did similar workouts and the focus is more on ruck exercises and less on mileage with the ruck on. Both are important, but the mileage with the ruck takes a bit of time and this workout is meant to get you (un)comfortable with your ruck and exercises that maybe we don’t work on as much with regular boot camp stuff.  HIPAA took The Yank and I had GasHouse this week. Below is what we did at GasHouse. HIPAA probably did something similar-we discussed briefly earlier this week.

WU: 10 reps each X total of 4 sets: ruck military press, bent row, upright row, squat. At the start and between sets we did 25 big boy situps (total 100). WU over, we grabbed the toys out of the truck and went into the woods behind the Schiele. Today the toys were a 40# sandbag, old bicycle, and wheelbarrow with 80# weights in it. We got to the bottom of the hill in the woods and dropped the toys, made a few laps with lunges, bear crawls, short mosey then picked up the toys and did a few laps up and down the hill. At the top we did some squats and Merkins. We eventually did some Bear with Me: ruck on and do an exercise with 20 reps after bear crawling about 10 yards. The exercises were Merkins, Squats, Mtn Climbers, Flutter Kicks, and Upright Rows. We grabbed the toys and headed back to start.

This was a good start but definitely needs to grow in intensity and duration. I think we did about 40 minutes total. Honestly, I thought I was going to spew Merlot. My twins graduated high school today and last night we had a little celebration with some friends.

I guess I could have picked a better weekend to start this but sometimes you just have to say Nut Up or Shut up….

Regular EC

Gentlemen-

We have an opportunity to prepare for GrowRuck in Charlotte schedule for the weekend of August 6 which is really just over 2 months from now. A few of us have been talking about this and it’s time to nut up or shut up. It starts this weekend, 5/29/21 at GasHouse. All you need to know is we start at 0600 and will go for approximately 50 minutes. It will involve weight (bring your own) and be a mix of boot camp stuff and PainLab stuff but no likely running. Future NUOS workouts and locations will be determined at a later date.

And yes, there will still be GasHouse starting at 0700 with coffeeteeria to follow.  Remember, nut up or shut up. I’m talking to you.

New Site Q

Today Linus handed over the keys to me for site Q at GasHouse. He and Stroganoff have been the only site Qs at GasHouse since the beginning of GasHouse. This would be my inaugural post as site Q so I wanted to make sure it was tough enough. Knowing that we had the Amoeba Ruck, I didn’t want to push the legs too hard.

We started with a quick disclaimer and pledge then jumped into the warmup. Tube took the PainLabbers and I took the boot camp guys up the hill to the parking lot in front of Grier. We Nurred up Garrison-too bad Gastone wasn’t there, he always enjoyed a good Nur. Once we got to the top we did some high knees across the lot until we reached a good stopping point. We got right to it with some 11’s: burpees and jump squats. Strogi gave some side-eyed comments but I persevered. Short Sale tried to throw some mumblechatter at me….that makes me smile and at least in the beginning of the workout, think about burpees. We moseyed sound to the track for some more good stuff. We did a few Bojangles laps (fast-ish on the straights then walk/mosey the curves. Once we finished a lap, we did some Whoopee Burpees. “What the F are Whoopee Burpees?” you say. Why let me tell you. Whoopee Burpees are not something you do with your wife in the boudoir. They are Burpees with extra Merkins built in. Add a merkin-part with every additional Burpee in a set of (insert number here) burpees. We did 3 of them (not so hard) to start. The next lap we did a pyramid up to 5 then back to 1…..because that is what 1 particular PAX requested. It was at this point the my phone mysteriously disappeared so we went to the wall and did some Hip Slappers. The phone was quickly recovered so we just did 2 sets of 10 HS. I wanted to head to the steps at Grier but the gate was locked so we took a long mosey over to FPC and used the stairs to the PAD for the next thing which was called 10/20/30. I picked 3 pax to think (not say) an exercise then randomly assigned either 10, 20, or 30 to that pax and that was the number of reps we did. After each round we took a trip up the stairs for (I think) jump squats. It was fortunate for the pax that I was paying particular attention to how many reps I did and made sure I did not miscount at this point. At all. I can’t remember what we did but it was a total of 3 rounds of 10/20/30. At this point we needed to get back home so we moseyed back to start to join the pain labbers for COT.

During COT, Roscoe read a treatise composed by (I believe) Linus. It designated me as the new Site Q and outlined several of the responsibilities of both me and the pax. Think: confirmation covenant between the student/confirmand and the members of the church with mutual responsibility for the success of that particular individual. As usual with Linus, it was well thought out and although humorous, still thought provoking and challenging. I am taking on this responsibility with serious focus and hope to keep the tradition of quality Site Q going. Linus and Stroganoff have set the bar high and I intend to give it my best effort. I am sure ShortSale will be on my ass if I start to slack off and hope the rest of you will do the same. ShortSale brought Site Q t-shirts and handed them out to Stroganoff, Linus, and me. That was excellent! It also emphasized the importance of this role for me and hopefully will motivate me to help continue to grow the GasHouse.

At the end of COT, I challenged myself and the others to bring an FNG (at least 1) sometime in the next month. I have been slack in that department for too long and have seen the effects of low FNG numbers. Hopefully we can also get some Kotters out soon as well. I am hoping for a little rain sometime in the near future and maybe we can get Bandit back out for a little slip n slide to liven things up. Watch the weather report……you never know.

dog show

I was back in Folsom this morning-great Ao, great guys, OUTSTANDING cofeeteeria (partly based on the food and partly based on the PAX. However, you will have a hard time finding a better breakfast casserole anywhere). Saw a lot of new faces and a few old ones this morning. We also had a couple FNGs. Driving in I noticed some extra vehicles and quickly realized there was another event going on. Years ago I might have wondered if the Folsom regulars had camped out due to excitement for another workout…..I soon found out there was a dog show going on this weekend. At your own risk you can insert your favorite joke about anyone’s particular M at this point.

We started with a little warmup-a few SSH, Squats, and Merkins then headed to the tennis courts. I did get to the disclaimer shortly after starting. Q fail right out of the gates. Oh well, I guess that is what I get for not Q’ing on a regular basis lately. Once we got on the tennis courts I explained the initial plan. I reminded the guys of the Greenwood PAX event each year called IronPax Challenge. I borrowed part of one of their workouts with a minor modification. I would count my reps and they would do AMRAP. I did 50 squats/20 BB situps + 20 Freddie Mercuries, 30 Merkins, 20 Bonnie Blairs, and 10 burpees. BTW, Bonnie Blairs don’t get any easier if you don’t do them on a regular basis. We took a lap around the courts then repeated that without the burpees. And in case you are wondering, the second round was not easy.

We moved on to the second part which included an Indian Run….actually a “Run Indian.” I don’t think this is a real thing so don’t bother looking it up. I made it up last night and overall I think it worked pretty well. On Run Indian, the idea is similar to Indian Run except the first guy in the line drops off, does 3 burpees, yells “GO!!!! for the next first guy to drop off and do 3 burpees….. After completing the burpees, the idea is to get back into line moseying along. I was pretty happy with how this turned out. I believe Wichita felt like he was just doing burpees the whole time. Yup, I’ll call that success.

Once we got up top to the flag by the entrance we quietly stayed on the backward-facing wall and did some Donkey Kicks. Note to self: 20 DKs in cadence are tougher now than I remember. Apparently some old ladies came out and started to yell at us because we were shaking the walls. One look at Sparky and they swooned. He apparently smiled and they became a lot more friendly. I think he may have gotten a phone number from one of the maw maws. No judgement here. Everybody need a little love, even the blue-haired beauties.

We moseyed back to the tennis courts for beatdown #2. This time it was 11’s with HIP SLAPPERS on 1 end and Big Boy situps on the other end. This was pretty painful but we eventually finished. Next we moseyed back to the flag up front and did some hip slappers. We had just enough time to mosey back to start for a few minutes of Mary. I believe I had enough when Sparky called for 10 burpees during Mary?????!!!!!! WTF? Mary doesn’t burpee!!! She’s a sweet soul that needs some gentle petting. Not pounding on the pavement with grunting and snotting around all over the place.

Both trips up to the front flag we talked a little about 1 of the books we have read at Coconut Horse called The Four Agreements. As a quick reminder, the 4 agreements were the following: Be impeccable with your word, Don’t take things personally, Don’t make assumptions, Always do your best. We also put in a plug for Q Source at Ingles. Maybe this will get a few guys out there also.

We finished with a COT full of prayer requests ranging from Turtleman to LEO to various friends and family members. Great push guys. Enjoyed being back at Folsom again as usual.

And BTW, Allen Tate was not here today.
