Ricky Bobby kicks off 3rd F month

The Site Q Nutria EH’d YCH to Q the Ricky Bobby using a 3rd F theme.  In the same spirit of Sandlot’s Redwood Q series, YHC thought a history lesson on 3rd F activities in the Gashouse would be appropriate, with some exercise along the way.

Warm up consisted of merkins, squats, ssh, and Appalachian Americans.  Pledge of Allegience

We basically stayed under the canopy at the school doing non stop exercises with an intermittent lap around the track thrown in here.

To get a flavor of the exercises….burpees, squats, merkins, plank jacks, seal jacks, LBC’s Flutter’s, dying cockroaches, 8 Ct. Bodybuilders, planks,

We threw in a lap or two around the track a few times to break up it a bit.  The 3rd F history sharing included:

Bible study before the Gashouse workout at the picnic tables behind the Schiele

Operation Sweet Tooth Christmas for the Boys and Girl’s Club (Bandit Q)

Speed for Need

Several one off devotions at local churches (this will be repeated during 2023)

Tiger leading 3rd F after workouts

3rd F as part of the 1st ever CSAUP at Boss Hogg’s Farm

Adopt a Highway (Freight Q)

Rice and Beans (Virus Q)

YHC talked again about reading the book Freed to Lead and what it means to get “unlocked” as a leader.  Some recent PAX that were mentioned were Flintstone (2023 1FQ and next week Ricky Bobby Q) and Maybelline (Labryinth Site Q)

COT and closed in prayer.

Turtleman and Huck continued prayers

Turtleman Christmas light hanging tomorrow at 1700.  Whoopee Q (see Slack for details)

Always an honor.

The Old Crossroad Switcharoo and Nipple Bandit

YHC and Purple Haze switched AO’s for Q-Source and he completed his backblast before me #HIM
Being named the 2023 Nantan is an honor and after that big announcement and the Christmas party dessert table YHC needed to get in some first F. A lot of Crossroads PAX were running ten miles but the rest of us mortals needed to do the standard. YHC voluntold Def Leppard to pick the route since YHC doesn’t know much about Dallas except the town square, Folsom, and Old School. Def Leppard repaid me with immediately beginning the (2 lap) Gaston College route and nippling and defiling my drivers side mirror with a sweaty nipple band aid after the workout. You hate to see it.
The Mayor led the way for the first half of the run and has continued to impress. He truly is a runner now. Wichita could only be controlled so long before he pulled away but at least he knew where he was going. Gumby and I had a nice run and fellowship mosey and we all finished with a total of 13 runners.

8 stayed for Q-Source on “Articulation”. When a leader has a vision, he must articulate the mission so that others understand (not necessarily like) the mission. The more complicated the vision, the more articulation is required to describe the waypoints it will take to get there. Every person can articulate, but most people choose not to, but a leader must articulate because that is what leaders do.
Announcements: Possible beer mile in late December?
Prayer Requests: Turtleman, Huckleberry, Gumby’s Mom and Brother in law. Each other and family. Those who struggle with depression and/or loss during the holidays.
Be on the lookout for 2023 news. I am thinking about a good New Year’s Day beatdown convergence to start the year off sore….I mean right.
If you haven’t read Freed to Lead or Q-Source, make it a resolution and do so. Dredd and OBT articulate what it means to be in F3 in those books and you will understand (it doesn’t matter if you like it) it better.
Aye!

Individual Initiative

Four runners took off on the Coconut Horse route while two ruckers went off to parts unknown for about 45 minutes.  It was a morning where we discussed gloves or no gloves, short sleeves with gloves, shorts and long sleeves, and other gear related questions.

The conversations were all inclusive for the first 3 miles but then separation occurred as sometimes happens and everyone tends to run their own race.

Short Sale joined for Q Source on Sua Sponte leadership.  Basically the 5 core principles pave the way for the framework of F3 structure, but the individual initiative to make things happen is the secret sauce of F3.  Decentralized Command and cover and move all day long!

Never let History Repeat itself

Continuing the F3 Gastonia “redwood” tradition of Q’s at the Sandlot, YHC obliged for a history lesson. We had 14 show up, including Stinky Bird!  Great to see him making the drive back to his former home AO. In conducting research for this history lesson, YHC was reminded of “Martha’s House” being a Monday and Wednesday workout. Somewhere along the line, it became a thing for the site Q to rename the AO.  It was the “Dark Night”, it is the Labryinth, the Sandlot, and at some point it was called “Neverland”.  In hindsight, probably a terrible name as tell me which stranger you can EH and say, “join me in posting at Neverland”.  Probably not going to happen.  With that in mind, we said the Pledge and then immediately paid a 5 burpee price for the name Neverland and got it out of our system.  This was a small price to pay as it should be 2500 burpees.  The next time name changes should go through a Committee of Pax, sort of like getting your Mudgear shirt design approved before it is printed.

With that we moseyed to the medical office down the road for the warmup. We started with the original AO, the Gashouse, which began on 3-21-15. Three burpees, 21 Big Boy’s, and 15 Flutters. In the same fashion, we went through the dates of the next AO’s that were planted in chronological order. The Storm (5-26-15), Martha’s House (6-3-15), The Goat (6-11-15, Downtown (7-31-15), etc. We modified the exercises to 8 Count Bodybuilders instead of burpees and did LBC’s and squats at some point as well. We got to the Pub (12-22-16) which was the second running AO, and instead of exercises we ran in honor of Monk who planted to PUB and ran to the bottom of Gastone’s Hill to discuss CSAUP’s. We covered the many F3 Gastonia CSAUPS to include the Back Woods Brawl, the 50-mile relay(s), The “Climb”, the “Moron”, the Memorial Day Murphs, etc. We talked about the other CSAUP’s…the Yeti, the BRR, Bourbon Chase, Dam to Dam, and then the Mortimer 100. In honor of the Mortimer, we ran Gastone’s hill, while stopping at every other mailbox for 5 squats along the way. We returned to the bottom of the hill and then moseyed back to the medical office lot to finish the workout. Time was fleeting this morning. Whoopee and YHC discussed bringing this workout to a Saturday so we can do it justice with a full hour.
Next, we performed one set of exercises from each year I q’d a workout since I have been in F3. For some reason I couldn’t find any Backblasts for 2015 so we started in 2016 with a modified Colonel Trautman, followed by “3rd Base” from 2017…15 shoulder taps, 15 WW1’s, and 10 CDD’s. Then we skipped 2018 for some reason (mini chicken) and moved to a solo Dora (2019)..run…10 squats…20 LBC’s…30 flutters…run
(2020) EMOM Plank one minute
(2021) Captain’s Choice First PAX to 100 reps calls it….Moroccan nightclubs
(2022) Bunker…10 Lunges (running out of time here)
We moseyed back to start and that concluded the workout.

Moleskin:  Flintstone asked me to share what I remember in the early days of F3.  What came to mind was the original “Coffeerama” spot at Panera’s after the Saturday morning Gashouse workouts.  We always got the big table in the middle and I would always hit my head on the lights above.  Besides that, I remember being in awe that this was F3 thing was free.  That men from other regions would set up a website that was free.  We had a weaselshaker for F3Nation.  We had an App that you could put on your phone and look up other PAX.  It was awesome.  At coffeerama we discussed strategic growth and launching new AO’s.  We began sharing podcasts instead of listening to radio on morning commutes.   Stroganoff always had wisdom gleaned from the numerous books he would read.  Older Pax had advice to share with younger PAX and we learned from one another that whatever was going on in your life someone else had already faced it.

If you are reading this I encourage you to start participating in the best parts of F3 that you may have missed.  It is not the workouts.   It is the Whetstone, the Shieldlock, the Q-Source.  It is signing up for CSAUP’s and training for them.   It is bringing out the slip and slide when a tropical storm hits on a Saturday morning, or a 10 mile run earlier this year in the falling snow.  It is pushing yourself to be better and using your time more wisely to improve yourself so you can serve others, namely your M and your families better.  It is thinking less of yourself and more of the needs of others around you.

Probably one of my favorite things about F3 is that you don’t have to be First F Q or the Nantan to lead something.  You just need the idea, no matter how stupid, and then bring others along.  We have done some fantastic events in F3 Gastonia over the years, but the best part is the fellowship and routine that comes with being around better men than me.  Thank you for helping me become a better version of myself.  I am forever grateful.

Defib and his band of Merry Men

Today at the PUB we had some EC going on.  Defib and Flintstone went for a 3 mile EC mosey before the workout.
Time Frame had the sub Q for Diablo Sammich and had Tube and just as we left the lot, Bandit and Goose appeared for a ruck! #Kotter

Sargento was there before the beginning of the run but left with several minutes to spare so he didn’t get credit for the BB.  You hate to see it.

Anyway, YHC decided to call the Dangerous Route.  There was some debate on whether this was the original PUB route.  Anyway, a disclaimer was given to jump the guard rail if the stretch without a sidewalk was too precarious.  Also, instructions were given to mosey behind the Walgreens to avoid the stretch where there is no outlet. #safetyfirst

We ran and once we crossed New Hope we go down on Pamela.  There seemed to be unspoken performance anxiety at that point.  Anyway, once we were on our way up Gardner Park Drive there were some ladies approaching on the right.  Termite puffed out his chest and then took a spill so we stopped and collected what was left of him.  We let him lead at that point to ensure his safety and he broke away for the next little bit, obviously energized by the shock of the spill and adrenaline dump.

We arrived back to start and everyone was better for it.

Aurora Gastonialis

It was a wonderful Wednesday in the Gloom with my F3 brothers that showed up to participate in one of the most memorable workouts to take place at Martha Rivers park that day.

We started at 0529 since Whoopee had to leave by 0600 and we wanted him to get a workout in #F3250 rules….

Stroganoff posted today and that was awesome to have him back in the Gloom what has been a prolonged case of injuries and sandy V.

Disclaimer/Warm up/Mosey to front of the park for 10 burpees.

Mosey to the turd shack for 10 burpees and 20 Merkins.

Mosey to the edge of the woods for 10 burpees, 20 merkins, 30 LBC’s.  It was at this point that Watts Up noticed the clouds had formed into amazing light show in the dark.  This was coined the Aurora Gastonialis and you didn’t have to be in Iceland or Norway to see them.

We then moseyed into the heart of the dark woods along the trail for 10 burpees, 20 merkins, 30 LBC’s, and 40 squats.  Our night vision was better once we were in there a few minutes but it was spooky dark when we got there.  Watts Up was on his game and guessed the 40 squats were going to be a thing.  We then did 30 flutters, 20 CDD’s, and maybe 10 WW1’s or something.

Next we moseyed back to the turd shack and grabbed the wall for wall sits, wall sits with air presses, wall sits with air presses and marching, then derkins with feet on the wall, then donkey kicks.

We moseyed to the big parking lot and bear crawled the length of a traffic island and then took a lap and repeated that 4x.

We then did some mary with lots of gut exercises.  We then lunge walked a bit, then lunge walked with chinooks, then kareoked left and right, followed by a long run back to the AO where we finished maybe a minute late.

There was some excellent mumblechatter today, with the best being a reflection of how much fun Linus’s Q was on Monday at the sandlot.  Somebody said, “I wonder if he know’s how funny he is?”   Then someone else described him as the “Aunt you haven’t seen in five years who has been heavy on the XANAX the whole time”.

Anyway it was a great day to be in THE GLOOM.

Muggy Storm

There was evidence of moisture in the air before, during, and after the workout this AM at the Storm.  It was great seeing extra credit all around the AO this am.  Multiple PAX were running, walking, and riding before the workout.  It was a nice crowd that eventually formed at 0530 for the start of the workout.  Here is what happened…

Disclaimer….No FNG’s….Whatever I say is a suggestion so you don’t have to do it but if you don’t, I will likely call you soft.

Warm Up:  SSH, Merkins, Imperial Walkers, LBC’s

Mosey to the lower traffic circle for 50 squats, then lunge the circle, then partner squats x10

Mosey up the hill to the upper traffic circle.  Knock out some Plank Jacks IC

Mosey to the neighborhood side of Goat Island Parking Lot (library voices please) for Dora 1,2,3  100 Merkins, 200 Squats, 300 LBC’s

Whoopee enjoyed splashing in the puddles while running as usual

Mosey back up the hill for some shoulder taps and flutters along the way.

Arrive at the bottom of the hill at the entrance to the Storm.
Run up the hill, completing one burpee at each of the 15 light posts.

YHC asked Whoopee to take the bat flippers back to start for some Mary while the six came in.  We went over on time a couple minutes but that is how it goes.  We didn’t “modify” so that the Q wouldn’t be open to grief from the PAX.  It is what it is.  We did work and completed the workout.  However, I left some work on the table and I think I need a Saturday hour workout to complete what was planned.  Kudo’s to the PAX for pushing through and completing the entire thing.

50 Mile relay signups close tomorrow.  This Saturday!  Sign up now!

Coming Soon:  Skating with Mayor, JJ 5K, Transvergeance with Lake Wylie, Iron PAX

PT Test (again) at the Gashouse

A smaller crowd today for the PT test but who cares?  The ones that showed got after it in a big way.

YHC warmed us up with five reps of the testing exercises….merkins, squats, LBC’s, and SSH’s.

We then moseyed to the flag and said the #pledgeofallegiance

We moseyed to the track, set up the bluetooth speaker, laid out the weinke, and started the clock.  Broke and Wichita were in the early lead on the first lap.  It stayed that way throughout.  The form was really good today compared to some earlier tests, with each PAX getting the most from each rep.

Noisy cricket was only on his second F3 post and was getting after it for a second post guy.  Volt has the be the most improved PT test guy based on history…he keeps getting faster.

Wichita was running very fast on the laps and that was the difference today.  YHC decided to run a lap with him towards the end and was gassed after one lap.

Linus was his steady self and pushing each lap.  JJ was also steady and concentrating on form.

El Toro had to leave early.  When it was over, Broke was within 16 seconds of his best time from 2021.  Linus has his second best time, as did JJ and Volt.  Wichita beasted it with a 31:36.
This was a warm, muggy morning so look out if we do it on a 50 degree day.

We returned back to start and did five minutes of Broga with some stretching, planking, and pulsing.

YHC took us out in prayer.

Prayer requests are:  Huckleberry, Turtleman, Striper’s brother, Bos

Somebody has to step in the gap…

Let’s cut to the chase.  Virus and Flintstone ran 14 miles at the Horse this morning.  Short Sale, YHC, and JJ also ran but not that far.  When Virus and Flintstone got back they looked like they had jumped in a lake.  Flintstone reported that his inner shoe pad somehow got sideways during the run, aggravating his foot.

The Site Q, Stroganoff, led us in Q Source on Persuasion, one of the longest chapters in Q source.  A good discussion as usual with lots of shared wisdom.

The best part of persuasion is getting somebody to do what you need them to do and make them believe it was their idea.

Are you “working out” or Training? CSAUP’s can make a difference.

As the current 1FQ, I thought it would be a good idea to remind the PAX of F3 Gastonia of a few opportunities coming up that can and will influence your training over the next six or seven months.  Are you tracking your workouts?  Are you trying to be younger next year?  Are you going through the motions or do you train with intention?  Here are some events to consider doing and get your mind on actually training for a purpose.

First and foremost is the PT Test this Saturday at the Gashouse.  Whether you have done one or not, it is good to memorialize your times and see how your fitness stacks up.

Second, the Iron Pax Challenge is out there for September.  Although it isn’t a CSAUP per se, I would argue that if you do each week’s workout it truly is a CSAUP.  Gastonia so far has a weak showing on the sign ups…Sign up here….

Register for the IronPAX Challenge

Third, the local 50 Mile relay is almost here.  Defib is the Q for this event.  It begins in Dallas at 0400.  You should be home for lunch.  This is a running relay with four man teams.  Each leg is roughly 4 miles in length so  every fitness level can do it.  The sign up is here…..     https://f3gastonia.com/event-signups/csaup-50-mile-relay/

Next, you have seen the cool hi viz yellow tshirts at many AO’s over the years.  The Dam to Dam relay was started by two F3 guys and runs from Lexington, SC to Greenwood, SC from one dam to another for a total of about 60 miles.   The race is well organized and is a one day event.  Last year JJ ran it and came home and went to a concert in Charlotte with his M and posted at the Coconut Horse the next day. YHC has run it as a four man team and a six man team.  The race sells out in an hour.  Registration opens on Friday, September 2nd at 0659.  Get your teams together now and start training.  Here is the sign up link.

https://damtodamrelay.com/

Lastly, the Mortimer 100 is in March and is a 100+ mile relay from Granite Falls to the top of Howard’s Knob in Boone.  It is an asskicker.  You should always be training for this one and HTFU.
