Good Grief..Idaho!!

5 HIMS joined YHC for a post-Annihilation work out at Mount Hollywood! There were some moans and groans..even from Mr. Annihilation himself, who also informed us that there is an actual place in the U.S called, Good Grief. Who knew? Glad to have you there! Great to have GoldDigger..though this may have been option #2 since there was no run today for him; Blue Print is a force to be reckoned with; Freon is a trooper after having returned from church camp with a bunch of insomniac boys; and Pillager pushed not only himself and others..while reminding me how much quieter dogs are..as opposed to kids. Terrific group and time, as always, at Mt Hollywood!

Growing Pains

An abs routine that consists of three exercises done with iterations of 30 in cadence or on the Q’s count, each getting more “mature.” Start off with 30 LBCs (preferably 4-count, in cadence), immediately move into 30 Big Boys, then immediately into the Superman position while the Q counts off 30 seconds (can be done in a 4 count with the PAX).

Obama

In honor of the 44th POTUS, this traveling exercise consists primarily of a Bear Crawl, but after every 4 hand moves PAX must stop and perform 4 Merkins.

War Hammer

This exercise is a combination of a World War II sit-up by adding four American Hammer reps at the top of the sit up: 1/4, 2/8, 3/12…

7 of Diamonds

For the first round, do 7 reps of Burpees at each of the 4 corners with a mosey in between corners. Round 2, 14 four count Flutter Kicks at each of the 4 corners. Round 3, 21 Werkins at each of the 4 corners. Round 4, 28 Calf Raises or Squats at each of the 4 corners.

Word:

The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and his mercy is over all that he has made.

Psalm 145:8‭-‬9 ESV

” Grace pardons, while mercy empathizes and consoles. Grace is God’s love to the guilty; Mercy is his love towards the distressed. It is because of God in his mercy feels for us in our distress that he shows his grace in pardoning our sins and relieving us from our greatest danger. The Lord Jesus is the most wonderful gift of God’s mercy to us, and every other gracious benefit flows from that immeasurable gift. There is more mercy in the Lord Jesus than there is sin in us. The more we contemplate God’s mercy in his Son, the more committed we want to be to his service and the gospel.”

Nice work, Men!!

Whetstone/Shield Lock Restart Preblast

Whetstone/Shield Lock is ready for a restart! Interest in Shield Locks, in particular, and in Whetstone is being expressed among F3 Pax! I, as well as the members of SLT, believe this is a great time to begin afresh, or even to re-establish Whetstone/Shield Lock relationships: to get Blades and Stones paired together and to promote Shield Lock relationships with intentionality. A Whetstone or Shield Lock will help you be more accountable and quicken your acceleration in life.

So, why be a part of Whetstone in a Blade/Stone relationship? From F3 Nation Q Source: the Stone (Mentor), the harder of the two, sharpens the Blade (Mentee) while he himself is being sharpened. It works best between two men who are not at the same point in their journey. This must be a committed relationship for an unknown period of time and must be done with deliberation.

 It must involve:

Proximity – meeting physically and consistently at a set time

Purposefulness- Is there a specific need, area, topic that you as a blade need to discuss?

Periodicity- meeting frequently.

This takes a commitment! So, sign up – but realize when you do, you are committing time and effort which will be well worth it!

Why be in a Shield Lock relationship? This is a more horizontal relationship of support, encouragement, and growth. A Shield Lock is best with four PAX, but three is also ideal. These Pax meet formally for a purpose; or informally, with Pax agreeing to run, ruck together, or have coffee and discuss common things as peers.

How to get started?

DM me (Dr. Seuss) on Slack; Message; or call me.

Any F3 Pax can sign up at any time. However, for this initial restart, I would like to have responses, for those interested in being a part of Whetstone or Shield Lock, by the end of this week. I can, then, work on pairings in order to get going sooner, rather than later. There will also be information on Slack and Announcements at all the AO’s this week.

Look forward to hearing from those interested! God’s timing is perfect!

Accountability

Small but mighty ruck/run group and a welcomed visit from Norwood.  Please keep Norwood in your prayers as he goes through more tests and appointments to prepare for his upcoming surgery.  Prayers for Tiger’s Mom as well as she continues through her cancer treatments.

We had a solid discussion on Accountability and the importance of being in a Shield Lock.  Tiger said it well in Slack:

https://f3gastonia.slack.com/archives/C5TC1MGFN/p1687712796684679

Let’s make it part of our discussions in the coming weeks, brothers.

Focused, But Detached

7 men gathered in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter, home to the Sunday AO of The Coconut Horse. As the clock struck 0630, a white suburban was coming in hot – no, this is not JJ as he was already present. This would be Maybelline, somewhat early. Four runners took off for the main loop. Maybelline had his ruck vest to join Hunchback and Scrat for the Heatherloch ruck. Flintstone hung back with the Q for a slower mosey of 4 miles. We all reconvened in the parking lot at 0715, right on time. Stroganoff led the way pushing the pace for the primary runners. It was hot and muggy; summer has definitely arrived.

COT: Announcements – July 4th Declaration of Independence special beatdown at the hands of Tesla, followed by the reading of the Declaration (0700-0800); Roscoe has the Q at the Storm that morning. Annihilation with Tiger on 7/15 at the Yank. Prayers: Norwood, Ratchet & 2.0, Maybelline’s cousin, Roscoe’s uncle, Radar’s sister, and Anchorman’s sister-in-law.

Q-Source – the final chapter of The Dichotomy of Leadership covered Focused, But Detached written by Leif Babin. If you’re similar to me, certain phrases get stuck in your vocabulary and used on a regular basis without thought. “I can’t see the forest but for the trees,” is one of those in my lexicon. It was not quoted in the book but summarizes the concept we studied. A leader sometimes will be involved in detail but can’t get too intertwined or else lose some needed vision to guide the team. There are times the leader must detach in order to have perspective on the situation. Consistent with the 12 chapters in this book is the dichotomy of when to apply the focus or the detachment. It can be a struggle to find that balance. One of the quotes in the chapter worth sharing came from Colonel David Hackworth written in About Face which says: “An organization does well only those things the Boss checks.” I found that to be true in my team as my former boss pushed me to thoroughly check on details, even when it was beyond the point of my confidence in knowing the answer. He had me make phone calls or share updates on progress. He was a bit old school in his approach, but his way turned out to be right more than wrong. The lesson is the boss should never become too detached otherwise the team may skip a necessary detail.

Our group enjoyed this study. It stimulated good discussion for us. Until the next time, grateful for the opportunity to lead.

Short Sale

Committed

4 PAX, 2 runners & 2 ruckers faced the challenge of driving in the rain to the AO, only to find that the rain mostly let up during the beginning of the journey.  Turned out to be just what we all needed.

Run route was Stowe Point.  Virus ran the last mile like a domesticated jungle cat that’d finally been turned loose.  Ruckers rucked quickly, thanks to the long legs of Anchorman.

Before we launched, the rain was quite present, and the discussion centered around commitment.  Apparently, Seuss and Anchorman committed to each other to be there on this rainy morning, so they weren’t going to leave the other up the proverbial creek.  They asked if Virus and I were committed.  Well, not verbally, but between Virus as Site Q and YHC as the Q for the day, we were pretty committed.

So let the record show that the 4 PAX at Ground Assault on this day should all be committed.

At COT, YHC brought the average age down by about 5-10 years.

A strong bunch today of some of the finest HIMs I’ve grown to know here in F3 Gastonia.  Honored for the opportunity to lead.

Yabba Dabba Doo

Diablo Sammich voted best AO for mumblechatter 💪

We Rucked and mumblechattered. We talked about the likely hood of getting in to a tiny fiberglass submersible, we talked about appreciating the freedom to listen to live music, and we talked about  getting out of town and gathering with a large group of family for fellowship. Good stuff, good work men!

I could do Big Boys all day

I’ld just like to thank everyone that takes these AO’s seriously by showing up on time, every time.  It shows that you respect the site Q for that  day. But if you’re Maybeline, then we will cut you a break because you’ve been a Juggernaut this year. We might give you a hard time and bust your (@), but you truly have shown grit by stepping up all the time to take an open Q. Good work!

I’d like to welcome Hot Dog to PL for the first time.  Welcome!

We start with a strong warm up led by Breaker Breaker. He did all of the warm ups exercises that I had planned to do👏

With that said, let’s get to work.

Set 1:  50 seconds of work, 10 seconds to transition to the next.

LBC’s, flutters, LBC’s, flutters, American hammers, big boys, American hammers, big boys. 1 min rest, Rinse & Repeat

Lets Mosey over to the orange looper cones at the corner of the parking lot. These just showed up today, never seen them before. These cones were spread out probably about 30-35 feet in a straight line with a rope across the top. Let’s bear crawl from one side to the other, then come back and duck under the rope back in forth in a diagonal pattern while shadow boxing. Once completed, let’s nur back to our spot. Is that how you spell it?

Set 2:  50 seconds of work, 10 seconds to transition to the next.

rev-LBC’s, heals to Heaven, rev-LBC’s, heals to Heaven, Freddy Mercury,  star crunches, Freddy Mercury, star crunches. 1 min rest, Rinse & Repeat

Lets Mosey around the parkin lot and come back for one more set.

Set 3:  50 seconds of work, 10 seconds to transition to the next.

squat curl press, lawnmower rows, squat curl press, lawnmower rows, merkins, plank jacks, merkins, plank jacks. 1 min rest, Rinse & Repeat

I love that these guys can’t get enough Core’n More at PainLab. It makes me feel good to hear them talk about how much they love doing LBC’s or Flutters or American hammers, etc. But what really caught me by surprise was when VooDoo said ” I could do Big Boys all day!”, he prefers Big Boys. Now, I’m sure he meant his choice of core exercises, but it was just the way he said it that made us all question…how he said it. You gotta Show to know!

They loved my workout so much that I got 3 Hims to Q for the month of July. Gotta love teamwork 👊 Good work men

Breaker Breaker led us out with prayers requests 🙏

Double Down at Snooze

YHC has set a new standard and it appears to be holding! Standard is if you lead at Snooze, you have to post elsewhere first! Why not? And if you call that a standard you better be prepared to do it and lead by example. Which is the core of all leadership. So with that, YHC posted at Tequila Sunrise and moved right on over to Snooze to lead a beatdown. Went like this:

COP:

SSH X 20

IW X 20

Gravel Picker X 20

Tesla Stretches

MTN. Climbers X 20

Partner Blimps:

P1 – Run the lot around the park and back

P2 – Do the called work.

Flapjack.

1 – Burpees

2- Lunges

3- IWs

5 – Merkins

6 – Plank Jacks

7 – Squats

Bear crawl to the benches in the park.

Bench work as follows:

10 step ups (EL)

10 dips

10 dirkins

Rinse and repeat

Triple nickel on the hill outside the park.

Bottom: Jump squats X 5

Top: 5 American Hammers

Run this 5 times.

Done, time for COT.

NMM:

Really a good push! Helped that YHC ate half a Cliff bar between this and Tequila! Helped a lot. Standard enforced! You want people to follow you and/or take you seriously as a leader – do it and show them you’re real! That ‘s the only way. You might fail but if you try people will follow you and give you credit for getting them off their asses and making something out of nothing.  We need some examples like that now. YHC will be double posting on Friday all summer long. Are you with me?

Descending Counts of Pain

After what Blueprint did to my legs and arse yesterday at the Storm, what a mistake it was to impulsively sign up to Q the Labryinth on about 12 hours notice.  I guess I can’t help myself.

YHC had heard it was better mentally to count down instead of counting up during a workout and that inspired a crossfit style workout.  Usually done as 10 reps of squat, deadlift, and bench press, and then 9, and then 8, I modified the exercises.

Disclaimer, Pledge, and a brief period of stretches for a warm up.  Anticipating the bottom to drop out at any minute, we slow moseyed to the lower picnic shelter at Martha’s house and set up the speaker.  Here is the THANG:

10 Burpees

20 Merkins

30 Squats

40 LBC’s

50 Calf raises

After one round, we go to 9 burpees, 19 merkins, 29, squats, 39 LBC’s, and 49 calf raises.
YHC cranked up a random playlist and we started off.  The first few rounds YHC would say, “9 reps”, and then “8 reps” after the second round.  When we got to what I thought would be 5 burpees to start the set, Watts Up said we were on 4.  JJ confirmed.  Maybelline confirmed, and Winehouse confirmed.  So  it was 4 against one.  Basically YHC can’t count or actually did the required number of sets.  The PAX believed themselves to be correct, but in YHC’s head, they cheated themselves out of the 7 rep set.  You hate to see it.

Final totals:  Roscoe:  55 burpees, 155 Merkins, 255 Squats, 355 LBC’s, 455 Calf raises

Everyone else, 48 burpees, 154 merkins,  254 Squats,  354 LBC’s, and  454 Calf raises

Counting is Hard.

YHC was going to make them all repeat the 7 round set but we were low on time so we slow moseyed to the entrance of the park for Whoopee’s favorite exercise…the Press Press Fling!

This was followed by a shoulder stretch in cadence.  I can’t recall the name but is probably the most elite movement you can do if you want to be great.

We finished at Pelican’s for announcements and Prayer concerns.

Second F lunch today at noon at Logan’s Roadhouse.

Prayers for Anchorman’s SIL and Radars Sister.

Prayers for my Uncle Bob and Maybelline’s cousin. Prayers for Winehouse’s wife’s friends husband who passed away suddenly and unexpectedly.

Always a pleasure to lead!  Somebody pass me the ibuprofen.

Roscoe

Midoriyama 6/13

This BB will be short and to the point because YHC can’t remember many of the details of the workout. YHC was glad it wasn’t raining for once when he had the Q.  We had a great group of men post for another weak sauce Q!

Warmup: The usual stuff (SSH, Grass Pickers, Merkins, etc.)

PLEDGE

Thang:

Mosey to the asphalt hill that leads down to the lake for triple nickel. 5 rounds of 5 turtle crunches at the top, 5 reverse crunches at the bottom. This took longer than YHC expected (probably because it sucked).

Next, we moseyed back to the beginning of the road that leads into the ball fields. Stop at every pole on the left for 5 Mike Tysons, 10 H/R Merkins, 15 Flutter kicks (count right leg). We completed 5 rounds, then moseyed to the small practice field.

YHC called the longest mile. It isn’t really a mile. The distance around the small field is less than 400 meters.

Starting halfway down the sideline, perform 10 Burpees. Run 1/4 the way around the outside of the field and perform 10 Squats. Run another 1/4 around the field, perform 10 Merkins. Run another 1/4 around, perform 10 Big Boys. Return back to start to complete one round. R&R for 3 more rounds for 4 total laps and 40 reps of each exercise.

Mosey back to flag as time expires.

Announcements:

2nd F lunch on 6/21 at Logan’s in Gastonia 12:00

Annihilation workout 6/24 at Old School. Sister Act at the helm.

Blood Drive on 6/28 from 13:30 to 18:00. On the Red Cross website, search for Fthree gaston to find the drive.
