Challenge Yourself

“Keep pushing the rock”, “Don’t quit”, and “It’s you vs. you” are all commonly heard at a workout. We challenge ourselves during workouts to keep going with the goal of making ourselves physically and mentally stronger. But are we challenging ourselves the same way with the spiritual part of our lives? Do we continue to witness after being rejected? Do we give up on our daily devotions or daily bible readings when it becomes difficult or takes up too much of our time? We need to give maximum effort to become spiritually fit, anything less is unacceptable.

Matthew 6:33 – “But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well”.

Run Around

YHC picked up a Q for Mayor and had conversations about some of TinyTank’s beat downs or his M’s.  As I thought that over I recalled how hard they were and decided against it and went with the simple 10 parking space run around.  Arriving a little early to write exercises in 10 spaces the pax started rolling in.  Tesla coming in during the Warm up,  Varsity should set a better example.

Moleskin; Hard work by all, no mumble chatter at all!!!  Hipaa said we went a little over 2 miles.  Pax definitely kept it moving this am. It was an honor to lead you men.  #DRP

I know I had it here somewhere!

Tuesday at the Storm can be a grab bag of fun sometimes. You never know what you’re going to get, no show Q’s, Mayor being Mayor and sometimes your weinke disappears. The latter is what happened to Sargento this morning. YHC ran the 4 miles from home to get in a little last minute training for his upcoming race and he’s sure the weinke left the house with him. YHC even checked his pockets a couple of times en route to make sure it was still there. Everything was ready, speaker for the tunes, weinke, PAX.

Warm Up:

Goofballs of course 1×5 IC I think

Don Quixotes x10 IC?

Gorilla Humpers x10 IC

Pledge of Allegiance

Mosey around the parking lot up and around to the big speed hump. There the PAX found YHC’s portable speaker and his weinke. Wait, where is the weinke? Dang, Q fail. Oh well, here goes.

The Thang:
AMERICA – an escalator doing 10, then 20 then 30 reps of each exercise.

A – American Hammers

M – Merkins

E – Flying Squirrels (there aren’t any good E exercises)

R – Rockette Dips

I – Imperial Rockette Walkers

C – Crab Walk Inch Worm

A – Annies (if you don’t know look it up)

There was a train somewhere in there so we did 5 burpees for that.

We had the good fortune to listen to YHC’s U2 playlist while pushing the rock in preparation for their upcoming concert. Some PAX didn’t fully embrace the tunes but that’s ok, YHC will bring something else that most wont’ like again soon I’m sure. The concert was killer by the way!

To wrap up we tried some Austin Ass Kickers. They’re hard to keep a rhythm with.

I think that was time.

Prayer Requests – Can’t remember (this is a great reason to get your BB done before too long) sorry men.

Moleskin – I love leading workouts and hopefully everyone doesn’t mind putting up with me from time to time. I don’t look forward to writing BBs though and it’s even harder when you’ve lost the weinke to refer back to. Better luck next time.

Aye!

7

The number 7 is a very prominent figure in Bible.  This number, or multiples of it, show up in the scriptures somewhere in the range of 700 times and it always means the same thing, completeness.  The first Example of this is in Genesis 1 with the creation taking 7 days to complete giving us the 7 day week which is used world wide.  Another example of this can be found in Exodus with the command for Leprous Naaman to bathe in the Jordan River 7 times to complete cleansing. And still another in Revelation with the 7 churches that represent the completeness of the Body of Christ.  Again Joshua was instructed to march around the walls of Jericho 7 times to complete his mission and overcome their walls.  There and many more where those came from.

The Biblical number associated with man is 6 symbolizing our falling short of the completeness and holiness of God. Interestingly enough, man was created on the 6th day.   It is also appointed to man to work for 6 days a week and rest 1, Gods rest that Tool Time was talking about.  It is the number of imperfection that is man without God.  No matter how we try, we just can’t keep up all by ourselves.  Man is not God, just as 6 is not 7.

The gathering of 14 HIM’s in the gloom at The Storm this morning was an impressive showing.  Filled with real men who are making investments in themselves for the betterment of their families and communities.  Men of impact.  These are men that know that we are all 6’s without the One.  We all know that here in F3, we are forever trying to not be the 6.  Aye!

5:30….let’s invest!

Pledge

Big thank you to Mayor and the HIMs at the Storm for the opportunity to push the rock this am.  It’s a big honor to be part of, no matter how small, such an outstanding group of real men.  You have all in your own individual way helped me be a better husband, father, employee, and friend.  The honor is all mine.

See y’all in the gloom.

Timeframe

Round 2 of Plan B

Days leading up to my Q, I planned what was going to be a serious beat down. As the day got closer, so did the rain.

I was optimistic that it would be dry and all could enjoy the planned workout. That being said, the ground was wet that morning so I dug up my winkie from my last rainy day Q.

Plan B was back in action almost a year later.

The plan was to keep everyone dry while still giving them their moneys worth.

The Thang:

Pledge

No warm up, so let’s Mosey the long way around the parking lot to the covered area at the side of the school.

Once there, I pulled out my winkie along with a pair of dice. We circled around to roll the dice and try our luck.

Here’s how it worked:

Roll the dice and everyone performs the  exercise that corresponds to that #. Roll doubles and it’s a sprint to the end of the parking lot and back (Plus the exercise).

2 = 5 Burpees

3 = 10 Bobby Hurley’s

4 = 20 CDD’s

5 = 25 LBC’s

6 = 15 Seal Jacks IC

7 = 15 Opposite Raised Toe Touches IC

8 = 10 Merkins

9 = 15 Bicycles

10 = 20 Squats

11 = 20 Monkey Humpers

12 = 5 Burpees

I explained how I stole the dice from one of my kids board games. Seems like the dice repeatedly landed on 7 and 11 (Toe Touches and Monkey Humpers). Mayor swore my son’s dice were rigged and he had to be hustling candy from all the kids at school, which would explain why he has so much trouble going to bed every night. Something I may have to look into.

With 10 mins left and 1000 Toe Touches and Monkey Humpers behind us, I wanted to try something I did at Midoriyama a few nights before. Freight call out an exercise I believe he called the Iron Hulk. It starts with 1 Merkin and 4 Arm Raises. Then 2 and 8, then 3 and 12 and so on till we do 10 and 40. This one really sucks at the end!

After that we moseyed back to the flag.

Things must be going pretty good, no prayer request at all.

Convergence this Saturday at Folsom. All other AO’s closed.

Prayer to send us on our way.

It was a privilege to lead you gentlemen today.

Thanks to everyone who showed up.

Into the Fog

10 HIMs braved the fog this morning.  I came from around the truck, and Mayor had a weight vest on.  Way to put in the extra work.  There was a little mubble chatter then the train broke that up.  5 Burpees to start the warm up.

Warm up went like this:

SSH 20 IC

Imperial Walker 15 IC

Moroccan Nightclubs 15 IC

Merkins 10 IC

Pledge

Mosey to the school for a 5x5x5.  This is where the PAX completed 5 reps of 5 excercises then ran back to the beginning.  Rinse and repeat 5 times.  The excercises were:

Pushups

Knees to Chest (Reverse crunch)

Burpees

Mountain Climbers

Jump squats

We planked for the 6 then completed the 5 rounds together.  There was some light mumble chatter including a discussion between Whoopee and the Q about the Wonder Pets.  I know the other PAX have younger children, but they acted like they had never heard of this cartoon that promotes Teamwork.  If you have not heard of them go to You Tube and type in Wonder Pets song.  It’s a catchy little tune.

After the 5x5x5 we moved to the Chipper.  I changed this up a little by adding a run around one of the parking islands in between exercises.  The movements went like this.

50 Squats

40 American Hammers

30 Dips on curb

20 Merkins

10 Burpees

20 Hip, Rock, and Raise

30 CDD

40 LBC

50 Lunges

Fellowship Mosey to school for 1 minute wall sit with 15 shoulder presses OYO.

Mosey back to starting point for core work.

WWI 10 OYO

Flutter Kicks 20 IC

V Ups 10 OYO

LBC 20 IC

Finished with one round of Mary: Whoopee called Baby Makers 10 IC

COT

Announcements: Keep an eye out for information about Nomads in March.

Always a pleasure to lead men.  Thank you for the opportunity.  See you in the gloom.

Slide, Slide, Slippy Slide

12 #Hims showed up for a slippery workout. YHC was worried that the CFB National Championship game and possible icy conditions would lead to low numbers, but the PAX proved me wrong.  As we stepped out of our cars into the gloom, the PAX quickly realized there was indeed a slight coat of ice on the parking lot.  Even though there was ice on the ground, it still felt better than the temperatures over the past week.  With No FNGs we went right into the Pledge.

Warm up:

SSH x 30 IC, LBC x 20 IC , Mericans x 10 IC, 5 Burpees OYO. There was some grumbling that Burpees should not be in the “Warmup”.  It reminded me a little of the Jim Mora rant about the NFL playoffs. “Playoffs”

In between each exercise mosey to get the blood flowing which led us to the starting point of the workout.

Thang:

5 Rds

Mosey around around the SC practice field stop at 200 meter mark and do 30 Flutter Kicks and 20 Walking Lunges.

Mosey around the remainder of the practice field another 200 meters back to starting point and do 20 squats and 20 Merkins.

There was a train around the second round, so 5 Burpees.  After the PAX crushed this part of the workout we moved to phase two.

5 Rds OYO

3 Burpees

6 or 7 Dips

9 Derkins

12 LBC

Mosey back to starting point for a little core work.

2 rounds of side plank for 30 sec each side.

Mountain climbers 15 IC

With a few minutes left time for a round of Mary.

Frog Kicks 10 IC

Dying Cocka Roach 10 IC

Flutter Kicks 15 IC

V Ups 8 OYO

WW2  8 OYO

American Hammers 10 IC  Time

COT:

BOM

Moleskin: TClaps to Mayor, posting while being sick.  We hope you feel better. Thanks for the opportunity to lead men.  It was an honor.  Strong work coming out in icy conditions to support each other and get stronger.  Let’s keep pushing.

Anybody got a dime? Kings to Crowders Backblast

I apologize for the delay but since this was a pseudo CSAUP event the 24 hour backblast rule is a little gray.

Unfortunately my plans to eat at a decent breakfast eatery  near Crowder’s Mountain went awry when everywhere decent I checked was closed on Sunday except for McDonald’s.  I arrived about ten minutes early and sorted my car out and wondered to myself if anyone would bother to show but I had a good feeling that my hiking partner Stroganoff would and at 0600 hours there he was.  The pre-blast had a 0600-0640 breakfast timelime and no one else showed so I wondered how many would actually come for the hike.  About 0645 JK2 showed up and ordered some food to go so I knew we would have at least 3.

I pulled out right on time and wondered why Stroganoff wasn’t behind me.  I waited and figured he was being a good wingman for JK2.  Only later did I learn that someone left their phone in the head and had to go retrieve it.

We pulled into the Linwood access at 0658 and the gates were open and there was the Nantan and his crew waiting to go.  Kotter Richard Simmons let me know he was coming since he signed up for a HTL Ruck in 2018.  Once he appeared nine PAX got in two clown cars and off we went to the Boulder’s access at Kings Mountain.  Defib and I registered our vehicles while everyone hit the head and got organized.  Before I could set the tone for “church on the mountain”, Stroganoff ripped JK2 with a quip about his Ron Jeremy mustache.  JK2 didn’t know who that was and some others pretended they didn’t either.  This was the first of many Ron jokes the rest of the day.  I decided we needed to read the “Mile One” verse before we started.  GENESIS 2:15  “Then the Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”  God intends for us to work and through our efforts we can honor God by fulfilling our purpose to work.

We then headed out on the trail.  It was clear and brisk to start.  We went up a hill and down a hill and I walked past some signage and kept going.  Fortunately the wiser group in the back called to us and said we were heading towards South Carolina so we returned to the sign and made the appropriate adjustment.  It could have been a very long day.

We had a good pace and there was lots of fellowship along the way.  The group of nine all stayed close together.  I learned all about Richard Simmon’s training for the GoRuck in Charlotte next year.  He had a 40 lb plate in his ruck which made the rest of feel pretty weak in comparison.  He also had a feisty female voice on his phone telling all of us constantly to pick up the pace.

Everyone had on a pack of some sort from Camel-backs to  first aid kits and food.  Monk, the stoic that he is, only had his thoughts with him and a few snacks in his coat pocket.  He had a water bottle that probably held about 3 ounces.  Fortunately I had at least half a case so I gladly gave him some of mine later in the day.  At every mile we stopped to read another verse of scripture and share a lesson.  For the first 3-4 miles we only saw one person…an odd man sitting on a bench who seemingly came  out of nowhere.   Both Monk and JK2 had foot problems during the hike.  Monk later declared that his boots were too small.  However between some quality first aid and fresh socks there were no complaints.

On the Ridgeline trail there is an option to climb to King’s Pinnacle.  There was a discussion about whether or not to do this but Stroganoff didn’t hesitate and led the way and the others followed.  We arrived at the top with the mountain to ourselves.  We had a snack break and Stronagoff ate a delicious looking smashed PBJ sandwich.  Then Freight tried in vain to get his phone to take our picture by balancing it on a near vertical steep rock face.  Suddenly two strangers appeared and Monk asked them to take our photo.  When they asked if we would take theirs, I believe Monk said “NO”!  It was a pretty well timed joke but of course we took their photo.

From this point of the trail and we were about halfway and we past many hikers coming from Crowders or the Sparrow Springs parking lot.  At one point near Sparrow Springs the trail was closed as indicated with about a fifteen foot section of Crime Scene Tape.  Someone said, “anybody got a dime?  Somebody’s going to have to go back and get a sh%tload of dimes!”

We crossed another road and had a Mayor of Charlotte sighting.  She was walking her dog and actually passed us twice on the trail.   From this point the elevation increases towards Crowder’s Mountain.  Eventually we made it to the Crowder’s Pinnacle where there were what seemed like  hundreds of people.  After a mosey down the stairs we ended at the Linwood parking lot where we finished with a COT.  JK2 drove Defib and me back to the Boulder’s Access and we called it a day.

During the times we stopped for bible verses, Def Leppard could almost always repeat the verse with just a few hints.  He is a wise sage and I appreciate his impact on me.

All in all it was a great day with all three F’s on the Mountain.  Next time we will start from South Carolina for the whole trail.  I don’t think it would add much distance but at least it would resolve the feeling of unfinished business.

Psalm 1 18:6   “The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.  What can man do to me?”

Live without fear and you can be free knowing that your ultimate destination is in heaven.

I appreciate all the F3 brothers that I have crossed paths with  over the last several years.  The hike was right around the 11 mile mark.  I know that Def Leppard thought this was a CSAUP.  I can’t argue with that especially since the soreness I experienced this week was ridiculous!

It was a pleasure to lead as always.

Kings to Crowders pre-blast

So we are going to have church on the mountain this week so get your hiking boots on and come clear your mind on the mountain.  We will hike from Kings Mountain to Crowder’s Mountain.  Everyone has their own pace so you should plan on getting a partner or group of partners who will walk your pace. You will need a partner to carpool back and forth from the parking areas.  It should also be someone who will walk your pace.  This is cafeteria style so you can choose what you want.

Menu:  Optional start for breakfast- meet at Trackside Grill located at 109 E Hudson Blvd, Gastonia, NC at 0600 for a hearty breakfast.  From Trackside we will leave at 0645 to get to the parking lots.  If you don’t want breakfast, be at your State Park parking area at 0700 when the park opens.

Parking:  .  Head to Linwood Parking area.  Be there at 0700 when park opens and leave cars and then proceed to the Boulder access area.

***If you want to cut your hike short, you should drop your car Sparrow Springs access at 522 Park Office Ln, Kings Mountain, NC area with your wingman.  This will cut the hike basically in half (approximately 6 miles or 3 hours)

No matter where you park, you should clown car over to the Boulder’s Access Area at 108 Van Dyke Road.  When you get there, fill out the required forms for the Ridgeline Trail hike and grab a park map.  I have found decent cell coverage at Crowder’s to include MapMyRun.  You may consider a mobile charger since cooler weather may drain your cell batteries.

0730:  Operations/Safety Briefing by Roscoe and quick 3rd F.  Prep your gear and get ready.

Begin the hike before or no later than 0800.

Click to access crowders-mountain-park-map_0.pdf

Begin on Ridgeline Trail

Merge with Pinnacle Trail

Merge with Crowder’s Trail (This is near the Sparrow Springs access so for those that choose the shorter route you can head to your cars here)

Decision Point…  Choose either Rocktop Trail or Crowder’s Trail.

Rocktop is shorter but more strenuous and Crowder’s Trail is longer and less strenuous.

The Rocktop trail takes you to the Overlook at Crowder’s near the Radio Towers.  The Crowder’s Trail connects you to the Backside trail which ends at the Linwood Parking area.

End at Linwood Parking area and clown car back to Boulders Access at 108 Van Dyke Road.

What to bring:  Comfortable shoes or boots with good traction in wet weather.  It appears that we will get rain Saturday night.  The rocks are slippery.  Bring water and quality snacks or lunch.  Charging device for phone if you wish.  If you want to add difficulty to the hike, put a sandbag or weight in your pack.  Bring a first aid kit.  Bring a shovel flag.  Bring a change of socks.  Dress in layers with a waterproof outer layer.  Sleeves are optional.  HAVE YOUR CAR KEYS AT ALL TIMES.  We don’t want PAX stranded because they can’t find their keys.  Wear F3 gear.  You never know how many people we can EH on the trail.

They say you can average 2 mph and we are looking to cover about 12-13 miles.  We should be done by 2 or 3pm but it depends on your pace.  Plan accordingly.

I am sure I left something out so DM me or comment with your suggestions.

AYE!
