Iowa vs Michigan

Being a huge Iowa fan and knowing that we have 2 devout Michigan fans who frequent the Yank, I looked at the calendar to see when the two schools played each other this year.  Asked Pockets if I could have the Q on Oct 5th hoping to make the workout all about the Iowa/Michigan series and enjoy some good trash talking with Quiche and Buckey.  I didn’t realize that both Quiche and Buckeye were running the Ragnar the same day.  Q fail.  So, I decided to make it about college football trivia instead.  I asked a few questions to get us started and invited the PAX to join in with their own questions.  The workout went like this:

Friendship mosey to the pit while doing Chinooks, Reverse Chinooks and Moroccan Night Clubs.

What year was the first Heisman Trophy awarded? 1935 Known as the Downtown Athletic Club Trophy and renamed the Heisman Trophy in 1936. It was first given to Jay Berwanger a half back for the University of Chicago.

Bone the Fish

Start on the first set of lines by shuffle right, sprint up to the next line, shuffle left. Rinse and repeat for 4 lines then NUR back to the start for 2 burpees. Rinse and Repeat for 4 burpees then 6 burpees.

Has anyone won the Heisman more than once? Archie Griffin 1974 and 1975 for Ohio State

What school has produced the most Heisman Trophy winners? Norte Dame and Southern Cal (or the real USC) each have 7 winners.

Mosey to Hawthorne Hill

What stadium is at the highest elevation? War Memorial Stadium for U of WY in Laramie, WY is at 7,215 feet above sea level.

Mosey up the hill stopping at each (5) chalk mark for the exercise noted below, then mosey around the park:

1st Lap – 10 Merkins at each marker – Mosey to start

Michigan has the largest football stadium seating 109,901. Who has the second largest stadium? Beaver Stadium at Penn State holds 106,572, Then the Horseshoe at Ohio St at 104,944.

2nd Lap – 20 LBC’s at each marker – Mosey to start

Who has won the most national championships? Alabama with 15 – 3 prior to 1936, 11 during the Poll Era (1936-2015) and one in the playoff era.

3rd Lap – 20 Squats at each marker – Mosey to start

What year was the first college football game played? Nov 6, 1869 between Rutgers and the College of NJ (Princeton). Rutgers won 6-4.

Wet Nuts asked which school has the most national championships in any sport?  UNC Women’s Soccer has approx 30 championships.  (We may need to fact check this.)

Mosey to the field of Dreams

What school has the most wins? Michigan who started playing in 1879 has won 956 games, 2nd is Ohio St with 911 and Texas 3rd with 908 wins. This one didn’t make the workout but I had to throw it in here for Quiche and Buckeye.

Tiger came up with “When was the first televised college football game?  1969

Bear way to Heaven

Bear Crawl 10 yds and do  10 Burpees – Mosey back to start

30 yds 6 Burpees – Mosey back to start

40 yds 4 Burpees – Mosey back to start

50 yds 2 Burpees – Mosey back to start

Who has the 3rd most ACC championships in football? Maryland has 9.  NC State and Duke each have 7

What year was the ACC formed? 1953

Go to the stairs by the Yank for 1 minute of calf raises.

Time

Final question:  What new tradition does Iowa do at the end of the first quarter at their home games?  Norwood knew the answer,  The Wave.  There is a children’s hospital next to the stadium.  Patients on the top few floors can look down into the stadium to watch the game.  At the end of the first quarter all of the fans, both teams and referees all turn to wave to the children.  It’s heartwarming.

Thanks for everyone’s participation today.  Great work by everyone!

Dirt

PS:  Buckeye and Quiche have bragging rights for the next year.  Michigan won 10 to 3.

Moleskin

The cube represented our lives as Christians. Once we accept Christ we are clean and in order. We then immediately sin and screw up. We get all jumbled up and messy. Once we repent, we get back to an orderly state. It may not be on our time or the way we want but we are always set right. We then, of course, sin again repeat the cycle.

Thank you for the opportunity to Q.  It was honor to be able to be servant leader to a solid group of HIM’s

Big Pappy

Judges 2 18:19 ESV

“Whenever the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge, and he saved them from the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge. For the Lord was  moved to pity by their groaning because of those who afflicted and oppressed them. But whenever the judge died, they turned back and were more corrupt than their fathers, going after other gods, serving them and bowing down to them. They did not drop any of their practices or their stubborn ways.”

Round and Round

4 PAX posted at The Yank on Saturday. With the SFN race happening I assumed it would be a little light. Tesla wasn’t there though. I guess he got scared when he heard I was coming. Anyway 4 PAX got better and had some good 2nd F at the same time.

Warmup:

Let’s mosey! Up to the ball field we went. Circle up. Did a few warmups exercises and stretches.

The Thang:

Do a set of exercises and run a lap after each set.

Moleskin:

Great work by everyone this morning. Especially Orangeman who seemed to get faster as the workout went on. Or maybe the rest of us got slower? Either way he was killing it. It was nice to meet 5 Degrees. Keep posting sir! I will try to get back to The Yank more often.

Pavilion Chili Cookoff Pre-Blast

Bathrooms coming soon to the Pavilion!

The Rotary Centennial Pavilion has been home to the F3 Downtown workout since July of 2015, a few short months after the F3 Gastonia launch.  E4 was the original site Q before he handed it off to the elusive Spiderman who then turned over the reins to Bedpan.  By my calculations, F3 has posted over 200 Friday workouts at the Pavilion besides running through the site during our three 50 mile relays.

The big cheese, Sargento, happens to be the Nantan of the Gastonia Rotary Club this year.  Both Gastonia Rotary Clubs are raising money to install public bathrooms at the Pavilion soon.  Bathrooms would be a great thing for downtown as well as for any F3 PAX who routinely run late to the workout due to those “emergencies”.  (you know who you are)

To raise money for the bathrooms, the Gastonia Rotary Club is hosting a Chili Cook Off on November 2nd of this year.  I am aware that you should probably have bathrooms installed before eating chili but I am not in charge.  There are four levels of sponsorships, with $1000.00 being the “Four Alarm” sponsor.  I propose giving back to the Pavilion and raising money for this cause.  F3 Gastonia can assist in raising money for the bathrooms and if we meet our goal sooner rather than later we will be recognized in all advertisements and social media, leading to more exposure for F3 and hopefully draw in some FNG’s.

I am calling on all site Q’s to collect donations from PAX throughout the month of September until we reach our goal of $1000.00.  PAX may contribute cash or checks (made payable to the Rotary Club of Gastonia).  The good news is Diablo Sammich has already said they were going to raise $100, and that was immediately countered with a $150 pledge from the PUB.  The Coconut Horse then said they would raise $151.

The purpose will be to raise awareness of F3Gastonia and support the community through adding an amenity to the premier Friday AO in our region.

This initiative is “Nantan approved” as well as “Site Q approved”.  If each PAX that posts contributes something we should reach our goal in short order.  F3 is free so there is no obligation to give but Site Q’s please take up the collections and let’s hit this goal and put F3Gastonia on more men’s radars in our region.

Aye!

Gardening by the Yard

The PAX didn’t realize that YHC is a gardener. Roscoe does, but he wasn’t present. Crowder Green forever, ask Roscoe if you don’t know. This may be the first gardening themed workout in the history of Gashouse. This is what I remember…

Warmup:

Plank Jacks, Dying Cockroaches, Grass Pickers

Pick up some coupons from the back of my M’s kid carrier.

Mosey to the pad for some Triple Nickel.

5 Pickle Pounders (because cucumbers are grown in a garden then made into pickles) at the bottom, 5 Morning Woods at the top. X 5

Mosey up to the picnic shelter for Elevens: Dips and WWI situps.

Mosey back to the start to pick up the surprise, the big daddy double tire wheel barrow! What could this be for? Keep moseying to the Pit for the next round.

The Thang – Partner up, all the PAX does the exercises while on couple does a partner wheel barrow route (one PAX ride in the wheelbarrow while the other drives) with 10 shoulder shrugs in the middle. Trade with the next group in line and get to exercising!

Merkin Mania: 5 each of Diamonds, Merkins, Wide Arms, Crucibles, Staggered L & R, Tempo and Hand Release versions of the chest work. Aye!

Ab Killers: 10 Oblique Crunches L & R, 50 LBCs, 15 Oblique Crunches L & R, 25 LBCs, 20 Oblique Crunches

Spiderman Crawl to the line then back.

Rinse & repeat for a whole nother round. Strong work men!

Okay, so maybe everything wasn’t gardening related but we used a wheelbarrow and I’ve never heard of this in a workout.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead! Y’all are the best!!!

Gashouse Convergence

Save the Date.  June 29, 07:00 Convergence at The Gashouse.  They said it couldn’t be done.  Well, nobody really said that but Painlab and Bootcamp combined will work out together.  Park at the Schiele Museum, we mosey/fellowship mosey from there.  This will be a combined great workout and mumblechatter fellowship event.  Guest starring Short Sale for a special merlot churner Ab destroyer.

Breakfast immediately following at Union Diner, 1101 Union Road.  Not the same charm as Folsom’s Country Kitchen, Union Diner circa sometime 2018 we figure at least the ingredients are still fresh?  Breakfast is good though.  Turn right coming out of the Schiele, go approx. 1.5 miles +/- turn left on Union Rd.  Union Diner about a 1/4 mile down on the right.

Bring a friend, EH a Kotter.

See you There.

Aye…..Linus/Watts Up

VQ at Yank

06/17/2019
I have never had the Q at the Fighting Yank and Tesla mentioned an opening the other week at the Friday evening 2nd F event at The Station so I jumped at the chance knowing I would have to bring a tough one! Let’s go! One FNG (Chip Norman from Bessemer City welcome). Disclaimer was given.
Warmup at the stage area, nope. They were unloading something down there so change the plans to the parking lot behind Sammy’s that Broke told me was called the Pit.

After the 11 second set it reduces to 10 seconds for 3 runs still with 8 seconds rest, then 9 seconds and all the way down to 4 seconds if anyone can make it. Milton was the last man standing with Keeesh and Wet Nuts right behind. Nice work guys! Mosey around the park and up W Myrtle Street to Hill Street to find a nice sunny wall.

Angry 7’s
Hipslappers x 7 IC (called by Broke).
Hipslappers x 7 IC, LBC’s x 7 IC (called by Sparkey).

Hipslappers x 7 IC, LBC’s x 7 IC, Low Slow Squats x 7 IC, Merkins x 7 IC, LBFC’s x 7 IC (called by Doodles).
Hipslappers x 7 IC, LBC’s x 7 IC, Low Slow Squats x 7 IC, Merkins x 7 IC, LBFC’s x 7 IC, Donkey Kicks x 7 IC (called by Buckeye).
Hipslappers x 7 IC, LBC’s x 7 IC, Low Slow Squats x 7 IC, Merkins x 7 IC, LBFC’s x 7 IC, Donkey Kicks x 7 IC, Monkey Humpers x 7 IC (called by Tiger).
After each step I read a verse and a thought about anger. Anger has been a problem for me for many years. I have to work very hard to stay ahead of anger. Here are the references I used:
1) Proverbs 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife,  but he who is slow
to anger quiets contention. Slow to anger.
2) James 1:20 For the anger of man does not achieve the righteousness of God.
Anger keeps us away from where God wants us.
3) Ephesians 4:26-28 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on
your anger, and give no opportunity to the devil. Anger hinders all of our
relationships, especially M and family.
4) Proverbs 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Our response to anger can often control how the situation resolves.
5) Proverbs 19:11 Good sense makes one slow to anger, and it is his glory to
overlook an offense. Turn from anger toward forgiveness.
6) Colossians 3:8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice,
slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. Turning from anger will lead
to turning from other bad things.
7) Proverbs 14:16,17 A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the
fool rageth, and is confident. He that is soon angry dealeth foolishly.
Turning from anger shows wisdom.
I mentioned to the guys that as men we can often set the tone for our families and not to let anger set that tone but let peace and gentleness.
Mosey back around the park to the Pit for a last thang.

Dirty Mac Deuce, 3 exercises x 12 IC using arms, legs and core with each followed by a lap around the pit and up the entrance and back. The Q was having difficulty calling these and was assisted by several of the Pax.

3.Diamond Merkins, Mountain Climbers, American Hammers, Lap.

Coming in Hot

I’ve gotten pretty good at timing the drive to all the AO’s I plan to post at. This morning when my alarm went off I accidentally switched it off instead of just snoozing it. Woke up at 6:38! Oh crap, gotta go!!!

YHC jumped out of the car at 7:01 to plenty of jeers from the PAX, deservedly so. I had to make up for my tardiness somehow. It’s a good thing I planned a beatdown on the extra large weinke.

Disclaimer since we had an FNG, nice job Breaker Breaker!

Warm Up:

LBC’s (thought I’d do good balls, didn’t ya?), Plank Jacks, Morrocan Night Clubs, then GOOFBALLS!

Mosey up the sidewalk then get a count-off at the corner from the PAX so we can keep tabs on everybody. 14 in all, good crowd.

Route 66 – do CDD’s (Def Leppard Merkins) at each telephone pole adding 1 extra at each one until we reach the corner. Countoff…

Mosey around the corner to the back of the middle school for a new routine YHC found in the exercisicon.

The Thang:

The Gross – do 12 reps of 12 different exercises- YHC picked 12 I really don’t like doing too much. ALL WERE IN CADENCE!!! Sort of…

  • Gorilla Humpers
  • Burpees
  • Werkins
  • V-Up Roll Up (for Nantan emeritus ToolTime)
  • Lunges (Orangeman had the brilliant idea of making them jump lunges, so we did that at the halfway point)
  • Diamond Merkins (I really hate these)
  • Hip Slappers (but not as much as these)
  • Shoulder Taps
  • WWI Sit Ups
  • Tiger Squats
  • Mike Tysons
  • Maktar N’Diayes

Countoff… this is where Tiger left…then mosey down, around the track and to the shelter where the concrete is smooth for…

The Grater (a Sargento original where we get our cores shredded! Get it?)

  • Weezy Jeffersons (look it up)
  • Windshield Wipers
  • Crunchy Frogs
  • Oblique Crunch (for Nantan emeritus ToolTime)
  • Protractor
  • Peter Parkers
  • Parker Peters
  • Outlaws
  • Dollys

This is where the FNG said he had to leave to catch his 5 year old’s t-ball game. We had to name him before he left so YHC stopped the proceedings to learn a little about him then give him his name. Welcome 5 Degrees!!!

Mosey down to the amphitheater for one last hurrah.

The Triple Nickel – Mountain Climbers, which YHC switched to Plank Jacks at the bottom, Big Boy Sit Ups at the bottom. Plank for the 6. Tesla was the only one who followed the instructions. Great leadership Site Q.

Mosey around the park, do a Death Spiral lap around the fountain, then head to the Yank for the Pledge of Allegiance.

Announcement – Mt. Mitchell hike rescheduled for the 19th, 5k in Belmont, other stuff

Prayer requests – way too many for me to remember. Just remember to lift each other up and encourage everyone.

Moleskin – The last few weeks have been pretty tough trying to keep everything together with my M-in-law getting very sick then going to be with the Lord. Knowing that our PAX has each other’s back in prayer and in our lives is very real and powerful. Thank you all for your thoughts, prayers and support. Our wives need the same type of community that we’re so blessed to be a part of. Please encourage and support your wives to get involved in relationships outside of the usual family unit that can provide similar support like we have. Church, exercise groups, neighborhood groups, wherever they need to go to develop the ShieldLock that we all have. It’s critical for them just as much as it is for us.

Until the next time I’m just making it to a workout…peace.
