Lost and Found at the Goat

15 at the Goat to venture into the dark, where only one man was wise enough to bring a light (and it sure wasn’t YHC).

Got in a couple miles of EC with Watts Up and Dirt, and we’d just finished up when the cars kept rolling in.  A solid turnout for the Goat, and a good morning for a beatdown.

The Thang:

  • 20 x SSH (IC)
  • 20 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

Pledge, and we’re off.

First up, the Sizzle Suicide.  For those that missed the last time, a refresher:

  • Run 1 pole – 10 LBCs
  • Run back – 10 LBCs
  • Run 2 poles – 20 LBCs
  • Run back – 20 LBCs
  • Run 3 poles – 30 LBCs
  • Run Back – 30 LBCs
  • Run 4 poles – 40 LBCs

After an impromptu round of Flutter Kicks, we continued down 8th, away from downtown.  We turned down 10th St, just before the church and made our way to the back side of the colesium where an ideally placed picnic shelter was waiting.

For the Main Course today, we did the following:

  • 20 Decline Peter Parkers (Count 1 Side)
  • 15 Derkins
  • 10 Box Jumps
  • Mosey to the outfield opening
  • Sprint to Dick’s Sporting Goods sign in Center Field
  • 10 Squats
  • Mosey back to the shelter

We did the first round together (to make sure YHC didn’t leave anything out), then 4 more OYO for a total of 5 rounds.  The coliseum must have taken it out of Boudin, as he had to run.  The PAX pushed hard as most committed to the Box Jumps though alternates were given, but YHC must admit to being more winded than expected. It was also crazy dark down there, so it wasn’t easy to see those that weren’t nearby, so who knows what the PAX actually did.

We meandered to what, in hindsight, must have been a T-ball field, because it wasn’t very big at all.  That meander was YHC’s last good decision of the day.  I used to like running bases, as a ball player and a coach, and so I thought we could get in a round of bases to wrap things up.  That was a mistake for a number of reasons.

  1. The T-ball field’s bases were so short that it took Nutria about 3 strides to cover the distance from home to first.  Not a lot of high quality running there
  2. It was dark, so you couldn’t see the bases over the grass.  By the time we were running out a double and a triple, we were just following the loop of Tesla’s choice without a whole lot of bases being touched.  Appeals would not have gone our way.
  3. Did I mention it was dark?  Running out the home run, I tried to touch em all, but definitely got home plate.  As I was wrapping up, I saw Oblivious standing near second base obviously looking for something.  Come to find out, his keys fell out of his pocket, and nobody had a clue where they were.  Lots of adjusting goin on with our eyes to try to see through the dark.  Watch said 6:08, so we’re ok on time, but it’s dark, and the key fob is black.  The good news is the sun has to come up sometime, so we wouldn’t be there forever, but we could have been there a while.  In steps Dirt with his personal handheld electronic device that included a flashlight among many handy features including logging workouts on Strava.  14 PAX and 1 flashlight, and I wasn’t loving our odds, but just as the seed of doubt was planted, Dirt came up huge, finding the keys and ensuring the safe return of all the PAX to wherever it was they came from.

I think it’s going to be a while before we run bases again on account of YHC.

After the victory, and with a little spring in our steps, YHC chose to take us home by way of–the steps.  Not on the Weinke.  Not like we weren’t just aimlessly walking through a dark T-ball field looking for keys.  Let’s take the long way back too.  Big, dumb mistake.  Sure, we got up the stairs and hauled back to the flag, but by the time we got there, it was 6:18, and we launched into the COT

Moleskin:

Everybody’s different, and for some people it works, but I make some of the dumbest decisions when acting impulsive.  And it just takes one dumb impulsive decision to sour something that’s going well.  I plan to be ready to lead, and sure, there are plenty of times and reasons to adapt the plan on the fly, but to make changes impulsively and for no reason is not part of executing the plan.   No matter how well, or poorly, things are going, making decisions, especially as a leader, that are not on mission can have consequences.  Lesson learned.

I’m a big fan of the Goat, but I’m becoming a fan of a lot of the AO’s and am wanting to get out and see the parts of F3 Gastonia that I haven’t seen yet.  There’s a lot of good work out there, and I’m just proud to be part of the ballclub.  Thanks for another opportunity to lead.

NMM:

Great cold morning and a great way to start the 7th decade on the Big Ball! That seems crazy to say or conceive of for that matter. Even got a birthday present! A quart of Buttermilk! How about that! I’m good with it. Real good in fact.

In all seriousness 61 for me is a big deal. My dad died at age 61. I was 31. So essentially I have lived half my life without him here with me. I loved my dad. But he had the opportunity to be great. And he didn’t quite get there. Lots of self inflicted wounds. Tears me up when I think of it because he really was solid in a lot of areas. But he lacked a mature faith and it hurt him. How about we learn from mistakes and get better form them which is my thing here. So to me it’s about finishing some big jobs this year and getting others opened up and moving. On a lot of fronts.

Great group to celebrate with. Let’s go lead from the front and make things happen men!

First Frost in Cramerton

So YHC showed up at The Goat today to lead on more or less the 7th anniversary of his  first post ever in Charlotte Metro at Copperhead. Actually was 11/4/13 but why not observe it now? F3 was a different animal then. Went like this in the gloom that featured among other things the town sprinkler system going full blast in sub freezing weather on dormant grass. Smart. Real smart! More on that later.

NMM:

Great chilly morning to stay on the move. And move we did! Great work by all. Especially proud of The Wall. Pushing and getting better. This is what we want, what we look for. Not being left behind in any way. But not where he is either! And that’s what we are ALl about!

It was 7 years ago in November I joined up. Was skeptical about it. Didn’t think they were working out hard enough. My M thought I needed the fellowship going back to my  marathon/triathlon days when i was with guys all the time. We made each other better. I can go back to the late ’80s early 90s and tell you about all the guys (and girls) who met at the old Central (Dowd) Y then to run, swim ,bike and wound up setting the standards across the carolinas at races. In 1989 -90 we had I think 7 of us who had Boston QTs (I was one of those with a 2:57 at the old Charlotte Observer Marathon), and at least four who qualified for Ironman later that summer. That was a pretty remarkable crowd. And it took each one of us pushing each other  to get better. And that’s true well beyond athletics! F3 uses the workout thing to get you started. What you do with it is up to you. We’re there for you.

Tesla out.

The Goat Site Q’s First Q as Site Q – 11-5-20

Well I do not quite remember everything we did as I used the force to lead me in the Q. We started with a mosey around the downtown. Then we ran up 8th Ave for an exercise at each light pole. Once we got to First Baptist parking lot, we did a triple nickel with some ab work. Then it was off to the Cramerton community center to sit on the wall and reflect on politics and the world. You sit while your partner went up the stairs for a set of burpees, squats, and abs. Did that 3 times…I believe. The next round was feet up on the wall while your partner ran around the building. Did that 3 times…I believe. Then we moseyed back to the church lot to start our lunges at every other light pole on the way back. Wrapped up with some stretching with the time remaining. Pledge, Announcements, Prayer Requests, and COT. Lesson learned to write down your workout after the workout.

Prayer requests – Our nation, Breaker Breaker’s family, Flintstone’s sister with COVID (She is doing better), my father in law.

Thanksgiving is at 7am at The Goat

Plan A, a couple miles, and a soggy Goat

November Challenge is in full effect, and it’s definitely taken root with a number of the PAX looking forward to getting in miles towards their 100.  At the Ricky Bobby Wednesday, I told Dirt and Watt’s Up that I’d help them get their miles.  As the QIC at the Goat, I figured I’d keep the PAX running and we’d get in what we could.  Well they took it to mean that I’d be there for EC.  At that point, I was effectively EH’d into a longer morning.  The good news was I knew there would be at least 3 of us there, regardless of the weather forecast.

Turns out, the best weather of the morning was from 5:00 – 5:25.  As we passed back under the 1 lane bridge after 2+ miles, the skies opened up, and we weren’t sure what we were in for.  I was reminded of some mumblechatter from the day before at the RB where as the rains came, someone said, “thank goodness we have an experienced Q.”  Well no such luck here.  This was only Q #2 for me.  I did come with a plan B though.  so as the rains came, I brought out my emergency box of stuff, and we got started with a quick disclaimer.

The Thang:

  • 15 x SSH
  • 15 x Hillbilly Walkers
  • 15 x Hairy Rockettes (it is as you’d expect; kind of like Toy Soldiers; it might actually just be Toy Soldiers; when in doubt, consult the Exicon)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches

Rains let up a little, decided to roll with plan A for as long as possible.

Mosey to the bridge.  Doesn’t feel like a Goat workout without crossing the bridge, so we Bear Crawled across, did 20 Diamond Merkins, and Bear Crawled back.  Rains picked up and the bridge got slick.  No worries.  We made it.

Next up was a round of Sizzle Suicides.  Watt’s Up correctly predicted some LBC’s here.  Went something like this:

  • Run 1 pole – 10 LBCs
  • Run back – 10 LBCs
  • Run 2 poles – 20 LBCs
  • Run back – 20 LBCs
  • Run 3 poles – 30 LBCs
  • Run Back – 30 LBCs
  • Run 4 poles – 40 LBCs

Then came 4 Corners (stack at each stop)

  • 15 Pretzel Crunches each side
  • 15 Freddie Mercuries
  • 15 Travoltas each side (like a Nolan Ryan, but a little more disco)
  • 15 Plank Jacks

Last stop at the Rec Center for some Flutter 300s.  Dora, but just with 300 Flutter Kicks.  5th Corner completed, we moseyed back.

Pledge

Announcements:

  • PT Test – November 14th
  • Shirts for Gashouse, Yank, Storm and Bulldog on sale now; Ricky Bobby in the works

Prayer Requests:

  • Watt’s Up’s uncle with pneumonia

Moleskin:

Not sure if the rain let up, or if we just got used to it (or maybe that was just me).  Never felt the need to break out the plan B box.  We’ll save that for another rainy day.

12 days into November, and I’m making progress towards my November Challenge.  Thanks to Roscoe for the push, and to the HIMs that are out there in the Gloom putting in work, converting to runners, and EHing others to do the same.

Just Another Gloomy Day at The Goat

Thirteen HIMs posted at The Goat this morning for a standard issue beat down. Hopefully, YHC did not disappoint.

Quick warm-up and a short mosey to the island. Walking the bridge is not allowed, so we started off with a stupid shuffle, which quickly Omaha’d to a lunge walk. Mosey to the other bridge for another lunge walk across, then onto the back parking lot.

The Thang: 6 corner escalators! We started in the middle with 2 burpees, scatter shot to any corner for 10 hand release merkins. Back to the middle for 4 burpees, mosey to a different corner for 10 hand release merkins then 20 CDDs. Corner 3 was squats, corner 4 flutters, corner 5 side straddle hops, and corner six for American hammers. Each time in the middle increased the burpees by 2 until 12. Run it back down the escalator until time to head back.

Lunge walk, stupid shuffle, bear crawl, or whatever your PAX heart desired over the two bridges for home.

COT

It was a honor to lead – Orangeman

Back to back at the Goat!

So YHC took on a back to back following Ricky Bobby yesterday and the Goat today. So after a late night “rescue” of my M and 2.0 from the rally last night so they wouldn’t  get home @ 1 am YHC relied on a basic program to deliver a  decent beatdown for the pax. Went like this:

COP:

Arm stretches

SSH X 20

IW X 20

Grapevines Right and Left.

Mtn. Climbers X 20

Mosey across the South Fork and over both bridges, lunge walk across the bridges to the parking lot for the following:

Partner up

P1 – transports to the second light and back.

P2 – do called work, then flapjack.

Repeat 5X

Set 1 – Merkins (5 sets), run to light and back.

Set 2 – Big boy situps, Karoake to light and back. (5 repeats)

Set3 – Squats, skip to the light. (5 repeats)

Set 4 – CDDs, run to light and  (5 repeats)

Mosey back across the bridge to the playground and picnic table shelter.

Dips X 10 (cadence)

Step ups, 10 total

Homicide Dirkins – 10 total (cadence)

Inclined situps with a twist – 11.

mosey back to the flag and COT, pledge.

NMM:

Pretty effective plan, simple and consistent. Everybody got a good push today and we stayed together. No risky road crossings, used the toys the AO has available all the time. Textbook stuff.

Prayers for Timeframe’s aging parents and health things they have going on.

Great AO and pax, love to lead here.

The Stairs and Bridge to Nowhere

Twelve men cruised into Cramerton this beautiful morning to start their day with some shenanigans at The Goat.  Our workout plan was the product of my 2.0 McKenzie, aka Musicbox.  I mentioned today was my day to Q and she lit up with ideas.  We scouted the AO last week for painful opportunities and in the end found the Stairs and Bridge to Nowhere.  This morning she gained some praise and a few groans along the way.  It went something like this…

Warm up with 10 SSH IC / 15 Cotton Pickers IC / 20 Imperial Storm Troopers IC / 20 Moroccan Night Clubs IC  (In case you didn’t catch it… that represents todays date. 10/15/2020.  Smart kid.)

Mosey to Bridge  – Lieutenant Dan across Bridge  (Lunge – Lunge – Squat)

Mosey to Split Rail Fence – 20 Incline Merkin IC / 10 Decline Merkin OYO

Mosey back to Bridge – Bear Crawl across.

Mosey around town  square to Stairs for some Dora.

Partner Up!  Partner #1 runs up stairs, 5 Merkins in parking lot, run around building and back.

Partner #2 Starts off the 100 Merkins / 200 Monkey Humpers / 300 LBCs and because they were so darn fast 400 Squats.  She said we wouldn’t need them but we did.

Mosey around town square again with a stop for 25 Dips at the Gazebo.

Time for some Mary… “Nope too early.  We have 10 minutes” says Orangeman.  “We can go back to the Bridge.” say Orangeman.  I won’t repeat what the others said at this point.

Mosey to the bridge again.  Cross Lieutenant Dan style and turn back for another Bear Crawl.

Now we Mosey to Mary.

A few rounds of Merkin Clock and some Pretzel Crunches called out by Tesla and that’s a wrap.

Prayer requests – Fife’s Family – His wife’s Grandmother is sick with Covid.

Orangeman’s Daughter and Family – Upcoming surgery for his oldest daughter.

Announcements –   Brew Ruck Saturday 10/17.  Look for pre blast info from Freight.

Convergence Saturday 10/31.  Look for pre blast info from Broke.

It was a pleasure leading today.  Way to get after it!  We finished quicker than we had planned.  I’ll remember that next time.
