Cultured

After multiple attempts to introduce 2000’s rock to a bunch of 50 year old curmudgeons, YHC decided to turn back the clock and culture said curmudgeonly crew with some 1840’s rock. More precisely, with the Symphonie Fantastique by my man Hector Berlioz. If you thought Motley Crue and AC/DC were off the chain, you need to read the story of Monsieur Berlioz…

Anyway, the workout was great, the music was better. Show to know.

In the words of everyone’s favorite cop Roscoe: “If you ain’t got culture, you ain’t got shit.” And I believe all present would agree, there was plenty of the latter.

Never Forget!

Ironically, 11 PAX gathered at the Pavilion for a very muggy and humbling gloom honoring all those lost during the 9/11 terrorist attacks 19 years ago.  This morning was nothing like that of September 11, 2001 as someone had clearly adjusted the “humidistat” to 100%.  No FNGs but the standard disclaimer was presented.

It’s Friday

8 men showed this morning for the downtown beat down – 1 FNG

Warm up:

SSH x 30 IC

Moroccan Night Clubs x 20 or 30 IC ( until Waterboy arrived from the parking lot)

Merkins x 10 IC

Mosey to bridge – Lunge Lunge burpee across the bridge and plank for the six

Mosey to behind the Social Services  building

11’s from one side the small parking area to the other side – Merkins and Moroccan Night club

Sprint the up the parking lot a few time to improve our running??

Stop for more 11″s – LBC’s and Hand release merkins

Mosey to bottom of parking lot and partner up:

300 LBC’s as a team – one run up the parking lot while the other performs said exercise.

200 Flutter kicks (counting one leg)

Nur the complete parking lot to Airline Ave. and then up to the light.

Back to bridge – lunge walk the bridge

Mosey a longer route back to the flag and finish up the last 2 minutes with Merry

Downtown’s Alternate ID – IPC Wk1 – Inspector’s Gadget

6 Missed a turn when looking for Downtown and ended up at Cloninger Park for Week 1 of the IronPax Challenge

All completed the task.  Some faster than others, but all were better for it…

Shout out to Slaw and Huckleberry for showing up to proctor, encourage and chatter.

 

This week consisted of:

EMOM (called by app)- 3 burpees

3 Burpees (Begins Rd & EMOM timer)
50 Hand Release Release Merkins
100 Leg Raises
150 Jungle Boi Squats “2Spoonz Style”
200 Big Boy Sit-ups
250 Stationary Lunge Steps (ct ea leg as 1 rep)

Scoring: Total elapsed time beginning with the 1st Burpee and ending with the 250th lunge step.

Particulars:
*EMOM = 3 Burpees are performed at the beginning of every minute on the minute until all cumulative work is completed. Use a tabatta type app (SmartWOD Timer or Seconds) to run the EMOM.

*Each Burpee begins and ends in the standing position.

*Hand Release Release Merkins means that both hands are pulled off of the ground at the bottom of the merkin and 1 hand is pulled off of the ground at the top of the merkin.

*Leg raises require feet and knees to stay together through the entire rep. The top of the rep is reached when your ankles have passed above your hips and over your abdomen. The bottom of the rep is reached when your feet touch the ground.

*Jungle Boi Squats are a type of jumping squat. “2Spoonz Style” means that both hands touch the ground between your feet and are raised sideways until they are above your shoulders at the peak of the jump. This is an ode to Greenwood native DJ Swearinger and the hit he laid on Clemson tailback Andre Ellington.

*Big Boy SitUps are unsupported at the feet. No leveraging feet for assistance. Both shoulder blades touch the ground at the bottom of the rep. Both shoulders clear the hips at the top of the rep. Hands are free to use as momentum.

*Stationary Lunge Steps start in the standing upright position. Take a step forward until the Top knee is at a 90deg angle and positioned over the top of the foot. The Bottom knee should be at a 90deg angle and touching or almost touching (<1in) the ground. Step backwards until you are standing upright with both feet together at the starting position. This is one rep. Rinse & Repeat with the opposite leg. Count every step as a rep. (#EasyWay)
**No walking lunges! This is a stationary exercise so that the EMOM timer can be heard.

Was That Seven Times Around, or Just Six???

Another warm humid morning was served up for the 14 of us to enjoy!  As there were no FNGs a quick disclaimer was given and we warmed up with some Moroccan Nightclubs, Don Quixotes and Side Straddle Hops.  After that we did the Pledge.

A short mosey to the front of the Gaston County Administrative Offices.  There we prepared for the Walls of Jericho.  We did seven sets of each of seven exercises and then took a lap around the building.  The idea was to repeat this seven times.

The following were the called exercises:

Jumping Spider
Merkin with a bounce on the up (getting feet & hands off the ground)
E2k
Elbow to knee
Russian Twist
American Hammer, but I needed an “R”
Imperial Squat Walker
Cruel cousin of the Imperial Walker, squat between each elbow to knee
Crunchy Frog
a Dr. Seuss favorite, too bad he missed them
Happy Jacks
5 side straddle hops quickly followed by two jump squats
One-legged burpee
Not enough exercises start with “O”… this was a crowd pleaser

I should have made tic marks as the laps were completed… I though we were on lap six, but a vocal contingent insisted we had done seven rounds.  I capitulated to their count so we went to a more open space in the parking lot and lined up for 11’s.  We did merkins and tiger squats.

Mosey back to the flag and do flutter kicks until TIME!

Everyone put in some good hard work to get just a little bit better.

So YHC rarely if ever posted at the Friday uptown AO due to commitments across the river in the Big Town and an affinity for the Metro pAX AT Atilla. Since Covid however that has changed since YHC has no place to shower and get presentable due to gym closures. So, this AO has for now become my Friday destination. And a good one it is! Lots of opportunities and obstacles to work with. So this morning was time for a first Q here. Went like this:

L5: 5 burpees, 10 AH, 15 CDDS, 20 Big boy situps, 15 HR merkins

Repeat backwards going back down so that we end with 5 burpees on L1.

Mosey in the rain to the Franklin Hill fro some triple nickel work:

We mosey straight down South Street a few blocks until you get to the building with parking underneath.

Partner up for some DORA.
P1 does the exercise, P2 up the stairs and around the bldg back to P1, then flap jack.
Complete the following:
100 Merkins
200 Squats
300 LBCs
400 MNCs

Somewhere in here Tube started to not feel well and exited.  Hope he is feeling better.

Going North on South Street, between 2nd and Franklin, Nur, but stop at every wooden pole on left and do increasing Burpees.  That’s seven poles for those that are keeping count.

Move over to the parking lot for some 11s.

Warm up : 30 SSH in cadence

Mosey to wall: wall sit left over right and right over left and 10 Mike Tyson’s

Mosey to McQuitter wall: 20 step up per leg

Mosey down South St to first stop light – from there to the 10th light pole stop and do jump squats (1 at first and 10 at 10th)

Mosey on down to Garrison Blvd.

Brief pause and then mosey back to first stop sign.

Repeat in reverse for the next 10 light poles on the left only – this time nur up the hill.

What do you know we ended back at McQuitter wall again – 20 step ups each leg.

Mosey back toward the start and stop at the wall for a little more wall sitting but no Mike Tyson’s

F3 Fun Run from there to start but everyone has to have a turn so we circle the parking  lot – word of advance do not follow Buckeye in the fun run !

Side note: we did a lot of Flutter Kicks and LBC’s before and after the moseys.

Arrive back at start with a few minutes of “NO BURPEE” merry (don’t recall all of the fun stuff that was called).

Parking Deck Misery 7/17/2020

14 men showed at Downtown!

Warm-up:

Slaughter Starter = 20 Burpees

The Thang:

Mosey to the main street.  Exercise called is Route 66.  Use the lights poles on the left.  Start with 1 Hand Release Merkin at first pole.  Mosey to 2nd pole for 2 HR Merkins.  Work your way down the street adding rep at each pole. Finish with 11 HR Merkins at the last pole.

Mosey to the parking deck.  This was a terrible decision because it felt like 150 degrees in there, but we kept to the plan.  Do a Rack and Stack in the parking deck.  Run all the way to the top level using the ramps and do 10 Burpees.  Take the stairs down to bottom level and do 10 Burpees.  Run back to top for 20 Jump Lunges.  Take stairs down for 10 Burpees, 20 Jump Lunges. Run to top for 30 Merkins.  Back down for 10 Burpees, 20 Jump Lunges, 30 Merkins.  Run to top for 40 Big Boys.  Back down for 10 Burpees, 20 Jump Lunges, 30 Merkins, 40 Big Boys.  Run to top 50 Squats.  Go back down for 10 Burpees 20 Jump Lunges 30 Merkins 40 Big Boys 50 Squats.  That was awful!!!  Mosey back to flag.  Time!!!!
