The Gastonia Goonie 2024

Ok men of F3 its time for something completely stupid.  Just like the crazy Goonies from the 80s this CSAUP will require physical prowess and mental acuity (yes I know those kids didn’t have either but its 2024)

What: Ruck based CSAUP

Date: 5/4/24

Time: 3 AM yes 3 AM – no excuses I know you don’t have plans at that time. (Yes completely stupid)

Duration – under 4 hours

Location: Gashouse AO (Schiele Museum)

Why: Because we can

What you need to bring: yourself, a rucksack and a good attitude.  It will suck but I promise you you’ll love every minute (after you’re done).

Details: Full details and instructions will be given the morning of the event.  Pax will follow the lost map for a 10+ mile ruck with adventure stations along the way to challenge you both mentally and physically.  We will be back in time for the beatdown at the gashouse at 7am.

Thanksgiving Ultimate Frisbee

Back by popular demand the “Thanksgiving Day Ultimate Frisbee Tournament”! If you missed out on this last year do yourself a favor and get signed up. It was a hard fought battle with everyone leaving it on the field before stuffing themselves with food. It will be double elimination. Teams will be randomly selected in public at a coffeerama. It will be held at Midoriyama at the back soccer fields. 0700 players meeting. Sign up deadline is Friday 11/17.

F4 CSAUP

You read that right. Fitness, Fellowship, Faith, and Freight! All coming to a trail run near you. Come out and join me at Midoriyama on 11/18 for a relay team style trail run. Very much like the Ragnar experiment race we did several years ago if you were involved in that. We will all set up in one location(the parking lot at the soccer fields at the end of the road) and won’t have to move from there other than when you are running so this will be peak 2ndF as well. Each team member will run 3- 2 to 2.5ish mile loops. Teams will be 2 or 3 man teams. We will start at 0730 and should be finished by noon. Plans will be made for food and brew somewhere after. More 2nd F! Are you afraid of trails? Are you scared of falling? Meow. Study’s have shown the best way to avoid that as you get older is to regularly travel on uneven ground. It allows your body to adjust to it and build the muscle it needs to keep you upright when you become uneven. Some people we know should have started this earlier. So come out for a good time and to improve your longevity. Sign up deadline is 11/11. You will be notified of your team/members the week of the race. Sign up link below.

Kings To Crowders Hike 8-27-23 Pre-Blast

On November 11th, 2017, F3 Gastonia hiked from Kings Mountain to Crowders Mountain and on Sunday, August 27th, the men from F3 Gastonia will again make the triumphant return to the top of Kings and Crowders!  There are many PAX who attended this original hike that we don’t see much like JK2, Monk, and Richard Simmons.  In any event, here is a pre-blast for you to get your minds right.

We are going to have church on the mountain along the way so don’t worry about skipping church that day.  I always find it is a little easier to not be missed at home on a Sunday.  Everyone has their own pace so you should plan on getting a partner or group of partners who will walk your pace. You will need a partner to carpool back and forth from the parking areas.  It should also be someone who will walk your pace.  We will be stopping at times for rest and snacks.

Down and dirty (Executive Summary)

08-27-23 Park a car at Linwood Road access or Sparrow Springs by  0800.

Clown car to Kings Mountain Boulder access area by 0830

Register car and start hike by 0900.

Finish at Sparrow Springs or Linwood and clown car back to pick up cars and EndEx. More detail below.

LOGISTICS:  Since this is not an “out and back” hike, you will need to drop a car at the ending point of Linwood Road access first.  ***If you want to cut your hike short, you should drop your car Sparrow Springs access at 522 Park Office Ln, Kings Mountain, NC area with your wingman.  This will cut the hike basically in half (approximately 6 miles or 3 hours)

Optional start for breakfast-McDonalds at 0700 at Hudson Boulevard and Union Road in Gastonia.  If you don’t want breakfast, be at your State Park parking area at 0800 when the park opens.  You could also post to a Sunday AO if you think you could make it to Linwood by 0800.

Parking: Head to Linwood Parking area (4611 Linwood Road, Gastonia) Be there at 0800 when park opens and leave cars and then proceed to the Boulder access area.

No matter where you park, you should clown car over to the Boulder’s Access Area at 108 Van Dyke Road.  When you get there, fill out the required forms for the Ridgeline Trail hike and grab a park map.  I have found decent cell coverage at Crowder’s.

0830:  Operations/Safety Briefing by Roscoe or PH and quick 3rd F.  Prep your gear and get ready.

Begin the hike before or no later than 0900.

Begin on Ridgeline Trail

Merge with Pinnacle Trail

Merge with Crowder’s Trail (This is near the Sparrow Springs access so for those that choose the shorter route you can head to your cars here)

Rocktop Trail

The Rocktop trail takes you to the Overlook at Crowder’s near the Radio Towers.  The Crowder’s Trail connects you to the Backside trail which ends at the Linwood Parking area.

End at Linwood Parking area and clown car back to Boulders Access at 108 Van Dyke Road.

What to bring:  Comfortable shoes or boots with good traction.  Bring water and quality snacks or lunch.  Charging device for phone if you wish.  If you want to add difficulty to the hike, put a sandbag or weight in your pack.  Bring a first aid kit.  Bring a shovel flag.  Bring a change of socks.  Sleeves are optional.  HAVE YOUR CAR KEYS AT ALL TIMES.  We don’t want PAX stranded because they can’t find their keys.  Wear F3 gear.  You never know how many people we can EH on the trail.

They say you can average 2 mph and we are looking to cover about 11miles.  We should be done by 2 or 3pm but it depends on your pace and the start time which will be announced once YHC gets in touch with a park ranger.  Plan accordingly.

I am sure I left something out so DM me or comment with your suggestions.

F3 – Fitness / Food / Fun / Forest City

Make plans today to join your F3 brothers and bring the whole family for a day of fitness, food, fun, all in Forest City!  Saturday (June 3, 2023) we will meet around 10am in downtown Forest City.  Bike, run, walk, ruck, whatever you like on the Thermal Belt Rail Trail.  We’ll reconvene around 12:00 for lunch at el Mochocan Mexican.  And if that’s not enough then we can mosey across the street to the Carolina Arcade Museum for some REAL video game nostalgia with all your 70s & 80s video game favorites.  I’ve included some links below so reach out to YHC or Balljoint if you have any questions.  Hope to see you there!

Speed for Need Info (The Community Foundation Run 2022)

Guys,

Not sure who all has agreed to help w/ the SFN event Saturday but the last word was we have two Track Commanders.  I am picking up the SFN trailer later today & am planning to arrive at the FUSE parking lot around 7am.  I plan to set up in the lower corner of the main parking lot (see photo) and have the caretakers park beside me for ease of access.  We will make our way to the S/F line before 9am in hopes that they will let us start a few minutes early.  Please reply to this post if you still plan to help push so I’ll have a headcount.  Give me a shout if you have any questions (980-448-8140).  Thanks & we’ll see you Saturday!

Gaston Community Foundation Run

Yet another sign that life is coming back to normal, or at least the newer normal is the return of the Gaston Community Foundation Run which will be held at the FUSE District near downtown Gastonia on Saturday, April 9th at 9:00 am. We have participated in this event in the past as a Speed for Need event. In case you’re unfamiliar with this event, the Gaston Community Foundation hosts this event allowing non-profits to benefit via matching funds. Additional dollars can be raised through the race itself via overall participation and individual winners (more on that in a minute).

Different than past years, we now have the backing of the F3 Foundation which we’ll not only represent with our logoed shirts but have a place to direct our gifts as well. Now in your mind I can hear you requesting more information. Obviously, you will register for the race (or face extreme FOMO and abuse from your fellow PAX). Depending on when you register, the fee ranges from $20-$35. However, you may choose to make a donation, which is above and beyond the registration fee. Now why would you do that your cheap ass is wondering? Glad you asked. The Gaston Community Foundation will match a percentage of your donation so it increases the overall gift which you can direct to the F3 Foundation. To be transparent, your gift goes to the F3 Foundation to support any initiative the Foundation decides to support. There are many ways to consider this financial opportunity. Some will think of it as if they were paying a monthly gym fee. Since you’re getting F3 for free, it’s extra cash to make a donation. We all know the benefits we’ve enjoyed are more than we’d probably put a figure on. So, I ask that you consider some level of financial support that will have a chance to strengthen our organization. You do not have to run the race to make a contribution. In fact, anyone that would like to make a donation to the F3 Foundation can do so via this opportunity.

Now to focus on the First F part – competition. We have a legitimate shot to win some more cash for the Foundation. Here is how:

  • 1st place overall in men and women will receive $1,000 each to their organization (overall winners not eligible for age group awards)
  • 1st place per age group, men and women will receive $300 each to their designated organization
  • 2nd place per age group, men and women will receive $150 each to their designated organization

The age categories begin at 9 and under but I’m only listing the ones for our guys:

  • 25-29 – Gold Digger (unless he wins the whole damn thing)
  • 30-34 – Round-Up
  • 35-39 – Ball Joint (he can’t be 40 can he?)
  • 40-44 – Here is where some competition begins but we all know there is one bat flipper that doesn’t settle for 2nd place
  • 45-49 – Quiche – time for a comeback
  • 50-54 – A number of choices here: Defib, Roscoe, Stroganoff, Whoopee
  • 55-60 – I know a former Nantan that will give it a great try but Seuss – time to show this town coffee and guts will take you far in a fast way – you can even run in the middle of the road.
  • 60-64 – Oompa – my money is on you brother

I already know the conflict of the Vill to Ville race is the same day and that will take away some of our stronger guys. But we still have plenty of guys to show our community the strength of F3. I posted a few names and honestly thinking to all the COT’s it’s hard enough to remember everyone’s F3 names let alone the actual ages. So, I’m probably leaving some qualified individuals off the above list; Termite comes to mind – but if it pisses you off – good – come win the MF’er.

We’ll have a tent at the event which we will hand out brochures and information so we can continue the 2022 theme “Always be EH’ing!” Plenty more to come about this event as we make our way toward April. What you can do for now is use the link below and register and/or donate. If you have any questions, please contact me.

2021 JJ5K PREBLAST

We’re finishing up the dog days of summer and the cooler fall days are fast approaching. It’s time to stop using the hot and humid weather as an excuse not to get out and run, walk or ruck and the perfect way to do that is to sign up for the JJ5K on September 25th, 2021. F3 Gastonia has been a sponsor of this event for the last few years and we are continuing that sponsorship again this year. Some quick facts about the race:

  • Three options; 5k timed run, 5k walk untimed, 1 mile walk
  • Provides a scholarship to an East Gaston High School dance team member each year. This has directly impacted F3 Gastonia as Slaw’s 2.0 is a prior recipient of the award.
  • In 2020, F3 Gastonia PAX, M’s and 2.0’s accounted for over 1/3 of the total participants.
  • In 2020, F3 Gastonia had 6 PAX place in the Top 10 overall with Gold Digger taking 1st Overall. Tiger’s M was also the Top Female and we had multiple PAX medal in their age divisions.
  • 9am start on September 25th which means you can still post at your favorite Saturday AO and make it to the race.
  • Multiple sponsorship opportunities for companies or individuals who would like to donate. $100 sponsorship will get your logo on the race t-shirt and if you’re interested please see Sister Act or Broke for the forms.
  • Race signup link:  https://runsignup.com/Race/NC/Stanley/CPC5KTraining
  • Race location: Common Ground 5481 Hickory Grove Road, Stanley, NC 28164

This is a great opportunity to support the region and also enjoy some fellowship with your F3 brothers. You don’t have to be a runner, come out and walk or ruck, or just hang out at the F3 tent and support your brothers. I hope to see you there!

Gashouse Leadership Meeting 6/13/2021

The next leadership meeting for F3 Gastonia will be held at Lineberger Park on Sunday, June 13th at 4pm. This meeting is for ALL PAX who wish to attend and your SLT will provide updates on the happenings to date and also outline some planned activities for the remainder of the year.

The input of the PAX in our region is critical to our continued growth, so please reach out to me if you have any specific items that you would like to discuss. I’ll do my best to accommodate everyone, but would like to keep the meeting to 1.5 hours max.

If you have the time, plan on hanging around after for some 2nd F. There are plenty of options nearby for food and drink, or you can get in a little EC on the greenway while you’re there.

SYITG,

Broke
