The calm before the Storm

We never know what we will face, but we can prepare ourselves if we want to go pro.

Here is how it went down at the Storm.

Prayer Requests:  Lyn Hamm and her husband who is starting a new job.  Those on IR, Broke’s sister in law with a recent breast cancer diagnosis, Dolph’s brother can use prayers, A mother in law, and Def Leppard’s M’s surgery this week.  Keep the Nantan, Stroganoff, in your prayers.  He is dealing with sinus issues and we need him healthy.

Moleskin:   I had forgotten that I had the Storm Q until I looked at my calendar last night.  I was immediately excited since I don’t usually do Tuesday’s as part of my routine.  It is a great AO with lots of space.  It was good to see many of the familiar faces and some new ones who make Tuesday’s part of their fitness schedules.

If you are interested in the Whetstone program, please let me know.

Please consider donating to the Rotary Pavilion bathroom project.  We will reach our $1000 goal but we need your help.  Please donate to any site Q and YHC and his designee’s will collect this week.

AYE!

Caught in a Mosh

A group of concert goers showed up at the Gashouse for some entertainment.  Two FNG’s showed up, one for Painlab and one for the Gashouse.  I had EH’d a friend and told him to make sure he wore a concert or favorite band tshirt and he didn’t disappoint.  He had a sweet Jimi Hendrix shirt.   Clavin had a Lallapalooza tshirt (not to be confused with Hipaapalooza), I had Motorhead, Whoopee borrowed an AC/DC shirt, Short Sale borrowed an Iron Maiden shirt, but the best was Linus with a Tiffani shirt.

At 0700 sharp we did the pre-concert tailgate (warm up) with SSH, Merkins, LBC’s, and Squats.  We performed the Pledge and then split up for the workouts.  Bib Pappi had the Painlab Q and has already completed the BB.

We then moseyed backstage (Sherwood jungle gym)

5  pullups, 20 plank jacks, 30 flutters, 6 pullups, 20 Plank Jacks, 30 flutters, 7, 8, etc.  Some comments that we were backstage at the Mall for the Tiffani show.

We NUR’d halfway around the track and to the stairs at the church for the Opening Act.

Dora 1,2,3  100 Merkins, 200 LBC’s, 300 Squats  (with partners)

We stopped in plank to go around the circle to describe what we are thankful for, then moseyed to the front of the church for the Mosh Pit.

5 burpees and then slam into each other for a lap around the circle and repeat.  We then moseyed to the ampitheater for teh headliner at Red Rocks (the

Headliner  (Red Rocks)

Go to Schiele Steps to the amphitheater:  10 heels to heaven at the top, 10 jump squats at the bottom.  Several rounds of this and then switch to dips on the steps and Dying Cockroaches.

Then it was off to the Encore (Mary) with the Painlab.  Hipaa called 5 burpees OYO, then Clavin called something but the bells rang and we were done.

Big Pappy took us out in prayer.

It is always great to see Tophat out on the weekends!  Linus didn’t disappoint with the Tiffani shirt.  (even it if was homemade, ie. “bootleg”)  Whoopee asked our FNG what his favorite types of music are and he replied “anything but country”.  Hence the nickname “The Possom”  (think George Jones).

Always a good day at the Gashouse.

Pavilion Chili Cookoff Pre-Blast

Bathrooms coming soon to the Pavilion!

The Rotary Centennial Pavilion has been home to the F3 Downtown workout since July of 2015, a few short months after the F3 Gastonia launch.  E4 was the original site Q before he handed it off to the elusive Spiderman who then turned over the reins to Bedpan.  By my calculations, F3 has posted over 200 Friday workouts at the Pavilion besides running through the site during our three 50 mile relays.

The big cheese, Sargento, happens to be the Nantan of the Gastonia Rotary Club this year.  Both Gastonia Rotary Clubs are raising money to install public bathrooms at the Pavilion soon.  Bathrooms would be a great thing for downtown as well as for any F3 PAX who routinely run late to the workout due to those “emergencies”.  (you know who you are)

To raise money for the bathrooms, the Gastonia Rotary Club is hosting a Chili Cook Off on November 2nd of this year.  I am aware that you should probably have bathrooms installed before eating chili but I am not in charge.  There are four levels of sponsorships, with $1000.00 being the “Four Alarm” sponsor.  I propose giving back to the Pavilion and raising money for this cause.  F3 Gastonia can assist in raising money for the bathrooms and if we meet our goal sooner rather than later we will be recognized in all advertisements and social media, leading to more exposure for F3 and hopefully draw in some FNG’s.

I am calling on all site Q’s to collect donations from PAX throughout the month of September until we reach our goal of $1000.00.  PAX may contribute cash or checks (made payable to the Rotary Club of Gastonia).  The good news is Diablo Sammich has already said they were going to raise $100, and that was immediately countered with a $150 pledge from the PUB.  The Coconut Horse then said they would raise $151.

The purpose will be to raise awareness of F3Gastonia and support the community through adding an amenity to the premier Friday AO in our region.

This initiative is “Nantan approved” as well as “Site Q approved”.  If each PAX that posts contributes something we should reach our goal in short order.  F3 is free so there is no obligation to give but Site Q’s please take up the collections and let’s hit this goal and put F3Gastonia on more men’s radars in our region.

Aye!

Fear Inoculum

One of the great things about Folsom is that when you show up you feel welcome and right at home.  There were several EC options this morning.  Pizza Man led a run with four PAX at 0540 and Whoopee and Stroganoff led the Ruck EC a little before six with two additional PAX.  Sparky was fashionably late and went for a run and unfortunately missed the group picture.

We got back from the ruck at 0628 but with plenty of time to get in line for roll call with 17 PAX.

We began with a brief disclaimer and lots of mumblechatter.  The warm up consisted SSH, Merkins, LBC’s, and Squats.  Then we moseyed to a nearby parking lot and planked for the six.  It was during this time that I realized the pavement was terrible and the new asphalt nearby would suffice for the workout.  We moseyed to that lot.

Ten jump squats on one end of the parking lot, run to the other side for 5 burpees.  The burpees stay the same but the jump squats descend to 1.  There was some rock pushing going on here with some PAX well ahead of others.  Those that finished first began a little Mary with ab work.

Mosey to the Tennis Courts for Dora.  A quick word about the CSPAN podcast regarding Gastonia’s own Painlab.  #Inclusion equals growth

P1 begins the exercise while P2 runs the length of the 4 courts and back and switch for cumulative reps of:

100 Monkey Humpers, 150 Merkins, 200 Seal Jacks, 250 Squats.

Mosey to the flag pole and plank for the six.  Pledge of Allegiance  then core time:

20 Homer/Marge, 10 Big boi situps

30 American Hammers, 10 Big Boi Situps

30 LBC’s, 50 flutter kicks, 20 Big Boi situps

Mosey to the steps at the horse track.  Lunge walk the entire length then one set up step ups x20.

Mosey back to start and conclude at 0730 sharp.  Great work!  A little over 3 miles and lots of reps and mumblechatter.

Announcements:  PizzaMan shared a word about the August 17th (next Saturday) remembrance for his niece.  1000-1200 at Rankin Lake.  Bring your families for a run around the lake and learn more about their future plans.

Next Sunday BRR Ruck Meeting…ask Whoopee for more details

YHC took us out in Prayer.

It was another great day in the AO of Folsom and #NOGA.

Proverbs 12:25 Anxiety in a man’s heart weighs him down, but a good word makes him glad.

1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

Philippians 4:6-7 do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.

Slippery When Wet

The route at today’s Pub Run was brought to you by Linus who called this route a couple of months ago.  Inbound Gaston Day School Road, left on Armstrong Park Drive, Left on S. New Hope, Right on Lee, Left on Perry, right on Armstrong Park Road and back to the Pub.  This route seems like it is uphill the whole time which I why I chose it.  Stroganoff gave me the book, “Living with a Seal” and I have been enjoying the read.  Based on what I am reading, I will not complain about the suck (or try not to) for the near future.

Yesterday Slaw posted the inner album cover of Bon Jovi’s “Slippery When Wet” instead of the album cover during this twitter album challenge.  There is a difference between the inner and outer cover and Short Sale called him out.  However, the difference is good and Nantan approved.

Everyone made it back safely and pushed the rock with SA leading the way.

Great work!

Final Thought:  When is somebody going to start a Change.org petition to rename “Neverland” as an official Gashouse AO?

Announcements:  Pizza Man memorial event next Saturday at Rankin Lake at 1000.  Family friendly!

Acceleration

Five runners showed in the Gloom at the coconut just before sunrise. Quiche was there as he and Gold digger got a run in before the official workout. For Gold Digger it was EC but since Quiche didn’t stay for the official workout he gets no credit at all. Well, maybe a little!

Diva and Gold digger were out front while Clavin, Whoopee and I were the six. At some point I noticed mud on the greenway and it reminded me of Monk and his several “near misses” where he almost busted during previous runs.  Therefore I dialed him up via FaceTime and he accompanied us for about a mile along the run. The great news from the DC region is that Monk started a Q Source already, has friended the Nantan of his region and is helping the acceleration of his new region. He is also starting a running AO. (Remember the Pub?

I will confess that Linus did return from some sort of a run after the COT which counts as a post at the Coconut so I apologize for not giving credit originally  I thought he had poured water on his shirt or purchased a shirt with pre-sweat stains  thanks goes to Whoopee for calling me out and having Linus’ back

Several PAX had to leave before the Q Source but several more showed up  Linus, SledgeOmatic, Whoopee, and T-Square were at the Q Source where we discussed dancing idiots, vision, acceleration, cats, F3, humility, guard rails, and fast runners

A great start to the day!  Aye!

Stackhouse

Six runners and one Rucker showed up for the Coconut. Queeeeeesh and Golddigger ran 5-6 EC miles before the rest ran the normal 5. Hush Puppy rucked the route and listened to a podcast. It was a nice balmy morning for a run, and YHC found an Allen wrench in the middle of the road and saved countless tires from being flattened

ToolTime going away party at Sargento’s next Saturday  please rsvp.

PRAYERS for Trooper Wooten and his family.

It was great seeing Smokestack for two posts this weekend!

The MORONS

So this “flash CSAUP” idea was basically wanting to do something that was harder than normal and stupid but without the normal planning and effort.  I had a rucking CSAUP in mind that would take a lot more preparation than I had time for and a busy summer coming up precluded any real effort to get that done.  A few weeks ago I settled on this date and told Whoopee and Stroganoff that I had an idea and it would be called “The MORON” and they were of course humbled that I would think of them.

If I were to define a Flash CSAUP, it is basically like a regular CSAUP except it can’t be announced until less than 48 hours from the actual start so no one can prepare and the planning and organization is done more “on the fly”.

Without knowing how many people would show up, I prepared note cards with routes based on run times so I could group folks together.  This wasn’t necessary since we ended up with seven and decided to stay together.  Here is how it went down…

YHC couldn’t sleep so he got to the AO early.  The parking lot was full of cars and I thought “what have I done” but realized the Scouts were sleeping at the Schiele again.  I think everyone shared that thought as they pulled in.

A little after 0300 Stroganoff pulled in and then WATTS-UP.  Freight, Defib, and finally Whoopee.  I collected ruck sacks from everyone and drove Whoopee to Snoballs near Martha’s House to stage his truck and coupons for later.  I knew HIPAA was a HC and he was late so I gave him a call.  No answer.  Whoopee and I drove to Snoballs and were heading back when HIPAA called and said he was on his way.  I told him to drop his ruck at Whoopee’s truck and to meet us at the Schiele.

I started with a quick safety briefing and disclaimer.  When I announced that the first part of the CSAUP was a six mile run, Defib went to change his shorts.  Freight looked like I kicked sand in his face and took his woman.  They were obviously ready to ruck and didn’t anticipate the “pre-exhaust” run.

At 0340 we stepped off and ran a modified Pub/Coconut Horse route.  It worked out where everyone got to Snoballs with 5-6 miles depending on the route they chose to run.  Big time credit goes to Watts-Up as he announced that it was the furthest he had ever run in his life!

A quick unpacking of rucks and water and a few sandwiches and we were ready to ruck along with Whoppee’s heavy ass GORUCK sandbag “Alberta”.  We launched on time and went about 200 yards when YHC told everyone to get in the parking lot at the old HT for a quick beatdown.  I don’t think the PAX anticipated this but whatever.  We broke down the reps/sets but in total did a minimum of 100 Squats, 100 Merkins, 100 Mountain Climbers, 100 Flutter kicks, and 100 Lunges.  Sometimes we had rucks on and sometimes not but what really made the workout was the bluetooth speaker Whoopee brought along.  It was a gift for ten years of service at his job.  Apparently the speaker only plays George Straight, Eric Clapton and Tom Petty but to the PAX surprise the speaker had a malfunction and played some RUSH!  An even bigger surprise occurred during Flutter’s when the “Thong Song” came on.

After this quick smokefest we walked away towards the Coconut Horse and did the reverse route to the Greenway, handing of “Alberta” a few times between the PAX.  In all honesty, Whoopee, Stroganoff, and Defib carried that wench the majority of the time.  True #HIMS!

It began to get lighter so the headlamps went off.  We took the pedestrian bridge into the neighborhood and Stroganoff had a thought to go see his old home down the street which was a longer way.  No objection to that here.  We found out the house is actually for sale.  Hopefully a nice young family and future leader in the community will get it and achieve some of the Stroganoff mojo on the way to community service domination.

We continued and hit the big hills at Laurel and Nottingham and took the long way back to Parkwood and finally arrived at the Gashouse at 0648.  Just enough time to drink all the water we could find and get ready for the bootcamp and/or Painlab with TimeFrame and HushPuppy on Q respectively.

I must admit, the Moron’s weren’t looking too hot, especially knowing that Time Frame had announced a 5k training plan for his Q.  A quick warmup and pledge and an attempt to EH the Scout Dads coming out of the Schiele and then off to the races.  YHC was pretty much the six the whole time but I had good company along the way as we stopped and did different exercises.  A little more than 5k distance on this Q had the majority of the Moron’s up to 15 miles for the day.  The COT concluded the MORON as the Painlab and Bootcamp groups converged to close it out.

Coffeerama was at Union Road Diner which has established itself as the new breakfast hotspot.  The PAX felt the results of the MORON and were beginning to shiver from cold sweat soaking their clothes.  Lots of coffee and water were consumed at breakfast with very little mumblechatter until Freight ordered “Deuces”.  Something about that gets the immaturity to come out.  Then while waiting for the food Whoopee informs me that YHC’s M is on a group text with Whoopee and Stroganoff’s M’s and they were wondering if the “Morons” were alive.  YHC’s M apparently didn’t know that when I told her I was going in “a little early” for the workout meant leaving the house at 0245 and that it was called “THE MORON” and it was YHC’s idea.  I may or may not have heard about that later.  Good times!

Thanks for the PAX that showed up.  As mentioned, Whoopee, Defib, and Stroganoff led the way thorough most events.  Stroganoff pushed the pace on the run portion and the Ruck portion.  Watts-Up get huge credit for being “all in” and F3 has helped him lose more than a ruck sack of weight and he is a posting machine.  Freight has heard all the stories from the old neighborhood during various rucks and is now basically a Gashouse local.  He is pointing out things and reminiscing about the old times.  HIPAA avoided the fartsack thanks to my courtesy call. He announced this was his first run since the P200 but you wouldn’t have known it.  #Beast  It is true that Iron Sharpens Iron and these PAX pushed themselves.  The quote for the event was “Idleness and luxury are your enemies”.  Get out there and get after it.

I was a little concerned about the CSAUP moniker being used for what we usually just call “extra credit”, but this was a little more than that and the start time was pretty stupid so therefore both the “flash CSAUP” and the title “The Moron” are spot on!

Happy Mother’s Day to all your M’s and moms!

Roscoe

“The MORON”

This is a “Flash CSAUP?” What is that you ask?  It is like a regular CSAUP except without prior planning and preparedness.  That includes preparedness for you!   #SHOWTOKNOW

Saturday morning May 11, 2019:  Arrive by 0315 at Gastonia’s original and greatest AO of all time, the Schiele Museum of Natural History.  1500 E. Garrison Boulevard, Gastonia, NC

Bring the following things:

Ruck Sack with weight (30 lb suggested minimum)  **If you have more than one, bring it just in case another PAX needs it.

Running shoes/headlamps/reflective gear

Shovel flags

Sandbags

Fuel/Water

Start times will based on fitness level.

It might be possible to make it back in time for the start of the Painlab and/or Gashouse bootcamp but that depends on you and your team.  However, we will be back before COT.  (Team Assignments will be made by the Q and/or his designee)

Closing thoughts:

*Don’t expect much except to be better for the experience.

*You will probably be sore by breakfast (Union Road Diner at 0815)

*Prepare to be underwhelmed.

*They are called CSAUP’s for a reason.

*You will cover multiple miles with your best friends so what could possibly be wrong with that?

*It is called “the Moron” for a reason.

Solo Coconut

A glorious Easter morning saw one solo runner with no other PAX in attendance.  At 0630 with no one else in attendance I took off on the route I know so well.  I really enjoy my Sunday routines and although I missed my F3 brothers I know I wasn’t alone in the run.  I ran a little faster than normal but appreciated the sunrise and blessing that is Easter.

HE is risen.
