Not all 5:30s are Created Equal

The Q bug bit me and I’ve been itching to put beatdowns together and it dawned on me that Midoryama was about to get hot so if I wanted to Q, I should do it before it got hot.  Well, my good intentions were trumped by bad luck as we got a healthy dose of 91 degree heat.  Here’s what I remember:

5:30 came I announced myself as the Q and immediately caught flack for my fancy dance gloves.  Good to be at Midoryama.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 10 x Low Slow Squats (IC)

Mosey down onto the baseball field

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO) at the outfield grass

Mosey to Center Field pole.  With partners, we did 3 rounds running to each foul pole and coming back to the center for

  • 10 x Booyah Merkins

Right field foul pole was

  • 30 x Freddie Mercuries (OYO)

Left field foul pole was

  • 30 x Flutter Kicks (OYO)

We left the field, doing

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO) at the infield dirt

before heading back to the Turd Shack for some shade and more partner work

  • 10 x LBCs (IC)

as we waited for the Six, and then on to the next section.

Each pair would split up and 1 partner do an exercise on the wall while the other does an exercise from the sidewalk.  Either partner can tag the other in and switch spots with their partner.  Keep it up for 90 seconds, switching as many times as was needed.

  • 1st set – Australian Mountain Climbers & CDDs
  • 2nd set – Marching Wall Sits & Mike Tysons
  • 3rd set – Hip Slappers & Penguins

The shade was nice, but the exercises were tough.  Weinke called for a repeato, but YHC was done and ready to move on, so on we moved.

Quick mosey back across the street to the parking lot in front of the ballfield.  Here we used the light poles on the left side of the lot as markers and we

  • High-knee Skip to the next pole
  • 25 x Monkey Hummers (OYO)
  • Repeat for 3 poles

On the way back, we

  • Nur to the next pole
  • 20 x Imperial Squats
  • Repeat for 2 poles

Last but not least, we did a little Three Man Relay.  3 on a team.  One on one end doing one exercise.  Another on the other end doing another.  Always one man running between them, tagging in the next guy so there is always a runner and a PAX at each station doing an exercise.  Exercises were

  • Burpees (OYO)
  • Toe Touches (OYO)

We went about 4 rounds or so on that one.  Everyone got to do everything a few times.

Circle up for a few minutes of Mary

  • Flintstone – 10 x Crunchy Frogs (IC)
  • Blart – 9 x LBCs (IC)
  • Slaw – 20 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • Purple Haze – 10 x American Hammers (IC)
  • Freight – 10 x Sandy Vs (IC)

Announcements:

  • Bandaids for Freight
  • 2nd F Lunch – Thursday 5/27

Prayer Requests:

  • Sister Act
  • Turtleman
  • Big Pappy

Moleskin:

5:30 AM and 5:30 PM in May are quite a bit different, especially on this day.  At least 30 degrees different.  It was hot, and we all heard about it.

Hard to beat Midoryama.  Strong group of HIMs here that made me raise my game to bring something worthy of those hallowed grounds.  Hope it didn’t disappoint.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.  Lookin forward to the next one.

The 3rd Quarter

Gavel broke in his new rucksack by taking it for a spin with BOS, Whoopee and YHC.  JJ, Sargento, DDC, Stroganoff, and Roscoe ran the loop.

QSource wrapped up Freed to Lead, talking about Purpose and the Third 500.  D2X describes “what” men are led to do, and the Purpose helps define the “why”.  We got into a discussion about “who” (but left off the “where” and “how”).  JJ made a great point that we don’t always know who we are having an impact on, but sometimes you do get to see it.  He told a story of a girl at Christmas that they brought gifts to, and she immediately took and put everything on.  The youth that JJ was with got an understanding of how much their efforts meant and where they made their impact.  Those times we get to see it further motivate us to continue doing what we do.

A lesson from Freed to Lead that I’ve always taken to heart is that of the Third 500.  No scientific study here, but the 3rd quarter is often when the game is won or lost.  The beginning is a distant memory and the end is still a ways away.  It’s during this time that focus and attention is required to deliver an optimal performance.  In our lives, the 3rd quarter coincides with that “mid-life crisis” time.  As men with a purpose and a vehicle to continue to grow, it’s our duty to push on and make a positive impact on our Concentrica.  One of the things discussed is there comes a time in a man’s life when he looks around for the authority that’s always been there, and realizes it’s best found in the mirror.  It becomes time to step up and do what’s needed for the betterment of the group.  Having F3 gives us the opportunity to know that while we are the leaders in our community, we’re not leading alone, and we have other men we can grow as leaders with and can learn from.

Discussions on Freed to Lead were great.  Next up is Q’s choice at the Coconut Horse QSource.

As always, a privilege to lead.

The Burpee Penalty

12 strong at The Goat for a lot of bear crawls and a beatdown that went by so quickly, time expired with YHC still on Goat Island.  Here’s what I remember.

The Thang:

  • SSH x 10 (IC)
  • Side-to-side Lunges x 10 (IC)
  • Dying Cockroach x 10 (IC)

As always when YHC has the Q at The Goat, Sizzle Suicides is up next.

Starting from Floyd & Blackies, up the hill on 8th:

  • Run 1 pole – 10 LBCs
  • Run back – 10 LBCs
  • Run 2 poles – 20 LBCs
  • Run back – 20 LBCs
  • Run 3 poles – 30 LBCs
  • Run Back – 30 LBCs
  • Run 4 poles – 40 LBCs
  • Run Back

We moseyed back to the bridge to Goat Island and crossed it by doing:

  • High Knee Skips

Then moseyed to a pole about halfway between the two bridges for the Main Event.

Piggybacking a little off what YHC has Q’d and seen this week and following in the steps of EZ Rider’s Booyah Merkins on Monday, we partnered up and did the following:

  • Mosey in opposite directions to the bridge
  • Bear Crawl across
  • On the other side of the bridge, do:
    • 20 x Travoltas R (Nolan Ryan’s with a point)
    • 10 x Burpees
    • 20 x Oblique Crunches R
  • High Knees Skip back across the bridge
  • Mosey back to center to meet partner
  • 10 x Booyah Merkins w/partner
  • Mosey to the other bridge
  • Bear Crawl across
  • On the other side of the bridge, do:
    • 20 x Travoltas L
    • 10 x Burpees
    • 20 x Oblique Crunches L
  • High Knees Skip back across the bridge
  • Mosey back to center to meet partner
  • 10 x Booyah Merkins w/partner
  • (That’s 1 Round)
  • Complete a total of 3 Rounds

Well that’s what the Weinke said, but this went by extremely fast.  Or maybe I just had to take a really long time explaining it.  Regardless, we had finished Round 2 when time was running out.  YHC announced that the next half round would be the last, but only Clavin and Sister Act managed to finish the half round.  Time was ticking, so YHC called recover and went to get the Six.  By the time we got back, it was 6:17.

As the Q who brought the PAX in late, and as a repeat offender, YHC knew it was right to enforce a penalty on himself and after apologizing for trying to push things late, announced a 20 burpee penalty for the Q (10 burpees for each minute late) to be paid immediately after the COT.  That penalty was paid in full, accompanied by some forgiving and supportive PAX who didn’t have to, but weren’t going to let YHC have all the fun alone.

The Goat is one of my favorite places to Q, but I just seem to get so caught up in all the fun that I can’t get my timing right.  I’ve got another chance next month, so chance to make amends.

That’s the thing about The Gloom – there’s always another workout tomorrow.  If today’s didn’t go the way you want it – if you came out flat or it didn’t feel right or your head wasn’t in it – there’s another chance tomorrow to get it right.

Lookin forward to the next one.

Blue and Orange

A solid crowd of 9 for a rainy Monday got in some bricks at the bank, a mosey around the block, and a Triple Nickel with burpees and… more burpees.  Here’s what I remember:

Blue and Orange were the colors of the day, as Roscoe and Clavin couldn’t have dressed any more alike in a solid blue shirt and solid orange shorts.  I’m sure John Elway would have been proud.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Don Quixote (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)

To the Footmobile for some bricks, as everyone took a pair.  Rain wasn’t in the plans, but as often happens, the Gloom scared it off.  What was some steady rain as I was getting ready quickly turned to a drizzle as the clock struck 5:30.  It wasn’t long after that the rains were gone altogether, but the AO was still soggy.  Luckily, the plans were simple enough they could be performed anywhere, so the bank would be our destination for a circuit of:

  • Right Arm Curls (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Left Arm Curls (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Right Arm Rows (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Left Arm Rows (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Crunchy Frogs (1 brick in each hand – 40 seconds)
  • Flutter Kicks with hands back (1 brick in each hand – 40 seconds)

Timer was buried and YHC couldn’t get his phone unlocked with gloves on, so a quick

  • 20 x Merkins (OYO)

while we waited (YHC made them up later)

Next, we partnered up, but really missed on an opportunity to put the Twins together.  Dora was next with all exercises done with bricks:

  • 100 x Moroccan Night Clubs
  • 200 x Skullcrushers w/Six Inches
  • 300 x Overhead Presses w/People’s Chair

The partner running had to carry his bricks with him as he ran out the exit of the bank drive thru, and around the bank, back to the entrance.

Dora done, time for a run.  We left our bricks and took off out of the bank entrance, went down Old Neal Hawkins and around the Bank of America building, down to the corner of Union and Neal Hawkins, and back to our bricks for a 2nd circuit, just like the first:

  • Right Arm Curls (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Left Arm Curls (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Right Arm Rows (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Left Arm Rows (2 bricks in 1 hand – 40 seconds)
  • Crunchy Frogs (1 brick in each hand – 40 seconds)
  • Flutter Kicks with hands back (1 brick in each hand – 40 seconds)

Before heading back to the flag, we knocked out:

  • 25 x Moroccan Night Clubs (IC)

Back at the flag, we neatly stacked the bricks back in the Footmobile, and gathered for what was next.  6:07, so we were right on schedule for Plan A, which was a Triple Nickel around Pelican’s, with the following exercises done on each side of the building:

  • Side 1: 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • Side 2: 5 x Burpees (OYO)

Repeato 5 times, because it IS a Triple Nickel.  The suggestion was burpees, but YHC encouraged the PAX to pick their favorite exercise if they weren’t feeling burpees, so of course someone suggested 8-count Bodybuilders, and another PAX actually did it.  The Triple Nickel wrapped up beautifully at 6:15, and I think we all got what we paid for.

Announcements:

Where’s Flintstone?

9 strong at Gashouse to look at some photographs, low plank in a poorly maintained parking lot, and discover the modern luxury of the lawn at First Presbyterian Church.  Here’s what I remember:

In preparing for the Amoeba Ruck, YHC began to wonder how the points were going to be communicated.  “What if they just gave us a picture and said, ‘Go find it.’?” YHC wondered aloud to no one in particular.  Regardless of how they do the Amoeba Ruck, that sounded like fun, so YHC went and took pictures at 7 sites and planned some stuff at each one.  YHC also threw out a little teaser on Slack with the first picture for the workout.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Side-to-side Lunges (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Low Slow Squats (IC)

After a short discussion on where the FNG would end up, we split from Pain Lab and moseyed to the end of the driveway at the Schiele to explain my dumb idea.  First picture was shown and we were headed to:

Grier Middle School:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

Some rumblings about how this was stupid and complicated and were we sure Short Sale wasn’t in on this.  Next some Frogger on the way to:

Parkwood Baptist Church:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Bobby Hurleys (OYO)

YHC introduced the days ab circuit which would go like this: Partner up. One partner does a hold while the other does an exercise.  Switch after 30 seconds.  Holds/Exercises were:

  • V-sit Hold / Double Crunches
  • Low Side Plank / Oblique Crunches (One side only)
  • 6 Inches / Flutter Kicks

First time through the circuit at Parkwood, we repeated the whole circuit and switched sides for the Low Side Plank / Oblique Crunches for the second side.

Lots of grumblings about picking a better lot for the Low Side Plank with the PAX’s elbows feeling a bit ouchy. Sargento was a hero for pointing out that gloves could be removed and used as padding.  Buckeye pushed the FNG with a little friendly form criticism.  FNG gave it right back.  Our next photo featured an inverted Flintstone at what appeared to be a car wash at:

7 Eleven:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Bobby Hurleys (OYO)
  • 15 x Hip Slappers (OYO – Count Left Side Only)

Following this round, we had a quick discussion about mastery, acceleration, and patience from the book Atomic Habits by James Clear.  A quick recap: Improvement doesn’t come as quickly as you’d expect.  Just because you did 50 merkins yesterday, it doesn’t mean you’ll do 51 tomorrow.  If you run at a 9-minute/mile pace, your next run won’t necessarily be 8:59.  The truth is, it takes a long time seeing little to no progress to actually see results.  It’s frustrating, but if you have the patience to wait it out, the growth when you start seeing results will be way more than you’ve expected, and your 50 merkins become 100 or your 9 minute pace can drop into the lower 8’s or even the 7’s.  A quick quote:

“When nothing seems to help, I go and look at a stonecutter hammering away at his rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it.  Yet at the hundred and first blow it will split in two, and I know it was not the last blow that did it–but all that had gone before.”

Bottom line – If you start something new, especially something hard, don’t give up before you get to the point where you’re seeing results.  Stick to the plan, even if it’s frustrating and even if you can’t see the progress you want to see.  If you’re doing things the right way, it’s only a matter of time before you see results.

Anyways, YHC didn’t talk that long, but there’s more room in print, so I’ll take advantage of it.  Hopefully none of you have anywhere to be, or if so, you probably stopped reading already.  Regardless, time to move on to:

Sherwood Elementary:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Bobby Hurleys (OYO)
  • 15 x Hip Slappers (OYO)
  • 20 x Pull Ups (or something that resembles a pull up – OYO)

When finished, another ab circuit of:

  • V-sit Hold / Double Crunches
  • Low Side Plank / Oblique Crunches (One side only)
  • 6 Inches / Flutter Kicks

No time for two though, gotta go to

The Pad @ FPC:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Bobby Hurleys (OYO)
  • 15 x Hip Slappers (OYO)

More “Storytime with Flintstone” (“Can we do wall sits or something?” – “Sure, it’s you v. you”)

Mastery also requires practice.  Lots of boring practice.  What’s the difference between the best athletes and everyone else?  Well there’s a lot of things that you can’t change (like genetics), but “at some point it comes down to who can handle the boredom of training every day, doing the same lifts over and over.”  Successful people FEEL the same lack of motivation as everyone else.  The difference is that they keep showing up in spite of their feelings of boredom.

This is something to remember when workouts or work or life get to be a grind.  It’s easy to do it when it’s new and fun.  How you react when you’re bored and over it is what makes the difference.  Whether you’re finding a way to keep things fresh by changing up your routine or trying to Q every AO in the month of April, or you lean into good habits and and a strong sense of personal integrity and responsibility, the key is to keep showing up, even when you don’t feel like it.

Next picture is from:

FPC Front Driveway:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Bobby Hurleys (OYO)

Time’s running out, but last Ab Circuit (cut a little short)

  • V-sit Hold / Double Crunches
  • Low Side Plank / Oblique Crunches (Other Side)
  • 6 Inches OR Flutter Kicks

Lying in the grass for this last round was quite a luxury.  Sargento was quick to point out the support the FPC front lawn provided to his back.   You just kind of sank into it like a memory foam mattress or a Sleep Number bed.  It was almost as good as the Fartsack.

With time running out, we skipped the last photo (The Library) and went back to the entrance of the Schiele for

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

and we came in right on time as Bandit wrapped up some Dying Cockroaches to the ringing of the FPC church bells.

Stupid Synchronizing and The Sifter

9 posted at Friday’s newest AO for some partner work.  Here’s what I remember:

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroach (IC)

Mosey towards Davis Park.  Stop at the church for

  • 30 x Toe Touches* (IC) *Some called these V-Ups.

Mosey to intersection of Park & Kingston.

When most of us posted the first time, we only knew one guy at the workout… our sponsor.  Our first round today, we are going to partner up and stay in sync with our partner as we run up and down Park and do the following exercises at each end:

  • 10 x HRMerkins (sync w/partner)
  • 20 x Apolo Ohnos (sync w/partner)
  • 30 x LBCs (sync w/partner)

3 x down and back.  6 total sets of the exercises.  Partners were:

  • Clampett & Dr. Seuss
  • Dirt & Tesla
  • Watts Up & Orangeman
  • Virus, Freon & Flintstone

The push and the fellowship of intentionally working with a partner was great, as always.  The connections we make with the other PAX in The Gloom is The Glue.

Mosey to The Scout Hut @ First Presbyterian for some more fun:

  • 10 x Dips (IC)
  • 15 x Mahktar Ndiayes (IC)

After some time in F3, you find your guys and become part of a Shieldlock.  These are the guys that you can count on to help keep you accelerating.  In “Freed to Lead”, they talk about The Sifter as the way that life will throw twists and turns at you that will sift out lesser friends, leaving you with only your strongest core group.  Getting after it in The Gloom repeatedly solidifies the Shieldlock and provides a foundation of strength.

For this part, we did Stupid Synchronous Mountain Climbers.  Each pair from earlier found another pair and with feet at the base of the wall, one pair did

  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (count left only)

while the other pair did

  • 10 x Australian Mountain Climbers (count left only)

When the Australians would come down, the other pair would go up, so there were always 2 down and 2 up, working in sync.  We repeated this for 3 rounds.

Another round of

  • 8 x Mahktar Ndiayes (IC)

And we head back towards the flag, stopping for

  • 30 x Toe Touches (IC)

Time for Mary

  • Flintstone – 15 x Crunchy Frogs (IC)
  • Clampett – 16 x Merkins (IC)
  • Orangeman – 10 x Burpees (OYO)
  • Dr. Seuss – 15 x American Hammers (IC)
  • Freon – 20 x Heels to Heaven (OYO)

Moleskin:

Great to see Dirt and Watts Up back today, and of course running EC.  These HIMs push every day, and are getting results.  Both had been training for work this week and both kept pushing the rock while out of town.  If you want to get better, look to these men as examples.

Everyone who posts, whether it’s regularly or just one time is looking for something.  You don’t get up for a 5:30 (or 6:30 or 7:00) workout for no reason.  The ones that don’t come back didn’t connect.  It’s a major part of what we do to make sure that the FNG is taken care of.  That the Six is taken care of.  We’ve all been there and know how much that pick-me-up means.  It’s obviously a sponsor’s job to connect with a FNG, but if you see a PAX you don’t know, go out of your way to connect.  That’s the glue that will keep them coming back.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead

How to Get Good

Great morning for some work, so we did.  YHC rucked with Hermie.  Roscoe, Breaker Breaker, Virus and Fountainhead ran.  Short Sale, Whoopee and Stroganoff joined us for Q Source.  Breaker mentioned he might have PR’d the Coconut Horse loop, so seems like it was quite the push.

In QSource today, we talked about Qing, and counting cadence, and how it never goes as smoothly as you want it the first time, but by the 100th or 1000th time, it becomes natural.  Like all things, it takes persistent work.  The difference between adequate and good comes from within.  It’s our job as men to keep pushing the rock and take the responsibility to make the leap from acceptable to good, and then from good to great.

We also discussed HTC, the counting method that we’ve all come to know and love.  Research for my 1st Q a while back had me stumble on this gem of a backblast from a QSchool held at Gashouse a while back. In it, CSpan elaborates on some of the important parts of Qing.  One that struck me was this:

“When a Q does not lead an exercise in cadence that would normally be done that way, he is giving away his authority to lead the Pax. He is implicitly telling the Pax that he not able to count in cadence or is not willing to learn.”

I’ve tried to make sure not to forget this in designing beatdowns.   Anyways, check out the backblast in the link above for more details on how to Q.

Announcements:

Moleskin:

I can’t put anything here that hasn’t already been thought or said about the tragedy in Rock Hill.  All I can say is to everyone affected, we think about you often, and keep praying for strength and healing.  If any of you need anything, reach out to a brother.  That’s the whole reason we do all of this.

Block work is tough.  Looking forward to getting stronger so it’s not as bad.

Great to have T-Square and Hushpuppy out in The Gloom at The Sandlot this morning.

The Storm’s Greatest Hits & A New Site Q

13 at The Storm to run back some of the stupidest things YHC remembers doing over the past year.  Here’s what I remember…

5:29 with a train rolling in and a packed schedule, and knowing I’m going to end up talking to much, so let’s get started with

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

We begin with the disclaimer from Groundhog Day at The Storm and

  • 22 x SSH (IC)

Next up, an old favorite from the Site Q himself

“Don’t use your tongue!” got the chatter goin, and the idea of the French Merkin was born.

Mosey to the traffic circle at the front of the school for some seriously modified 11s

12/15/2020 – Q: BOS – 11s modified to 7s modified to about 5 1/2s

Today, we did “Odd Eights”, starting with 1 of each exercise at the bottom traffic circle and 7 of each exercise at the top traffic circle at Lakewood Rd.  4 rounds total with 1,3,5, & 7 reps at the bottom and 7,5,3, & 1 rep at the top.  Called exercises were the same at the bottom and the top, and were:

  • Burpees
  • Double Crunches (LBC & Reverse Crunch at the same time)

In spite of cutting it way shorter than originally intended, it still took up a healthy chunk of time, taking us to about the halfway point of the workout.  No 10-counts today, YHC talks too much.  Six rolled in to a random assortment of ab exercises, and we didn’t break stride and went right on to the side of the school, with the batflippers jumping the literal hurdles along the way.

8/25/2020 – Q: Huckleberry – DORA

YHC learned two things from Huck’s DORA:

  1. “Australian” means inverted
  2. “Single count” and “double count” don’t mean what I think they mean

Partnered with Slim Shady, we messed around and ended up doing 300 Australian Mountain Climbers counting right side only or 2 leg movements = 1 rep.  Everyone else counted differently, and YHC still doesn’t know what “single count” and “double count” mean.

Anyways, today, pressed for time, our DORA was:

  • 50 x Dwight Howards
  • 100 x Australian Mountain Climbers (Count each leg movement)
  • 150 x People’s Chair Air Presses

Quick work made.  On to our last stop… the softball field.  They knew what was coming.

Before we got to the worst of it, an ode to the Site Q as we climbed the bleachers for some “Dirt-y Calves”.

  • 15 x Calf Raises (IC)

YHC takes his time calling calf raises so that each rep gets its full flex.  Time for one last dose of awful.

8/4/2020 – Q: Wet Nutz – Bear Crawl

This was awful the first time we did it, and it was awful again.  No matter how long you think it is, the path from the softball field is always longer than that.  I had been back at it in the Gloom for 2 weeks when Wet Nutz dropped this gem on us, and it was the most miserable and beat up I’ve ever been at a workout.  Luckily, Virus and El Tigre picked me up and I survived it.

For those who weren’t there, we bear crawled that path with 10 merkins the penalty for stopping and taking a break, until we reached the end or time got short.  Luckily, as today was just a highlight reel of miserable workouts, we didn’t get to repeat it the 2 or 3 times that we did originally, and with time running out, we moseyed back to the flag.

Back at the circle, Dirt asked for the floor and let us know that he was turning over the Site Q responsibility to Pilgrim’s Progress.  Many, many kudos given at that point to Dirt for his leadership at The Storm.

Moleskin:

Dirt is my kind of leader – one who lets the actions of his life speak for him.  He’s the first person to arrive at a workout and the last one to leave.  If he gives you his word, it’s as good as done.  He’s the first one back to go pick up the Six.  He puts others before himself.  You can think you’ve got the upper hand on him, and the next thing you know, he’s racing by you with plenty of gas left in the tank.  He won the Iron Skillet in March.  He’s not the fastest, or the strongest, and surely not the biggest, but he’s committed, every day, to getting better.  His daily excellence in the small things yields big results.

Now it’s Pilgrim’s Progress turn to lead at The Storm, and I know he will do the job well.  He’s consistent and committed and will put all his energy into his role as a leader.

This is my first Q after running the Mortimer, and I feel the need to remind myself that none of us are ever staying the same.  We’re either accelerating or decelerating.  Post-event collapse is something I know I struggle with as specific reasons for focused work are hard to find.  I know I can get complacent having reached my goals, and just not get after it with the same urgency.  Roscoe is always quick to remind us that the reason we work hard every day is because we don’t know what life’s going to throw at us next.  We’re never fully prepared for the worst, but if we keep accelerating and stay hungry, we’re stronger and more prepared than we were yesterday.  Keep pushing the rock, and keep accelerating.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.  Best wishes to both the former and now current Site Qs.
