2016 BRR – Pre-Blast #1

Pax,

It maybe holiday season as you sit back, enjoy those Turkey Day leftovers, look forward to taking those built-up vacation days you either use or lose, and start to work on your Santa Wish List. But it is also 284 days until the 2016 Blue Ridge Relay (September 9-10, 2016)!

You may be wondering why you are even reading a pre-blast about an even that is more than 9 months away… which is a valid question… But registration for the 2016 event opens on December 1st (Tuesday next week)!

Which means you need to start thinking about your team; will you repeat the roster from 2015, rope in a recent FNG, help an expansion group form a team, step up to a 6 man team, help your region organize, the CSAUP options are endless.

BRR expanded the teams to 160 and the cap was met in Early May 2015.

Highly encouraged to register early! Each year F3 continues to grow in participation and dominate the field, 2016 is expecting the same:

  • 2011: 2 F3 teams (18 pax)
  • 2012: 5 F3 teams (48 pax)
  • 2013: 15 F3 teams (70 pax)
  • 2014: 31 F3 teams (>300 pax)
  • 2015: 54 F3 team (>500 pax)
  • 2016: 600…700.. pax??

T-Claps to Freeloader and all the Regional Q’s who helped organize logistics and push out communications, a lot of coordination goes into 500+ pax!

We’ll get more organized with information and regional Qs as we get into 2016, but for now, just start talking up with FNGs, encourage new AOs to participate and EHing your brothers.

BRR is arguably the best CSAUP event, I mean 209 miles (12-40+miles per person), 30+ hours in a van, endless quality 2ndF and enough trash talking to last you until the next CSAUP event.

Thunder Road — It’s Time

What motivates you?  What makes you set the alarm at 0445 5-6 or even 7 days a week?  What makes you get out of bed without hitting the snooze button once?  What makes you show up in a parking lot long before the sun is even thought of?  What makes you shake off the cobwebs and move full throttle for the next 45 minutes to an hour?  What makes you GO! when your body screams STOP!

For a lot of us, this will work.  Fishwrap’s Hail Mary   For others, it’s the satisfaction of KNOWING that at the end of the day, we did our BEST.  We’ve all been there when faced with the choice….ease up  or accelerate, relent or be relentless, cave in or fight harder.  Even though we will certainly finish, we can all remember the exact time and place when this decision was made to slow down, just a bit.  If we make the easy choice, we lose…just a little.  While others will congratulate you on your finish, you know deep down what’s real.  You quit—you cheated yourself from knowing what you could really achieve.  You didn’t allow yourself to get better.  “Best” will still be just a word and not a place for you.

How can you get to your best?  Be accountable.  Not to yourself, but to me, to your brothers, to your M, to your kids.  Share your goal in the comments below—tell us what you want to achieve and own it.  Know that throughout this race, you will be supported and while alone you may run fast, together we run fast farther.  On Saturday, the crowd will mass, the gun will fire, and the clock will start.  It’s only a matter of time before you are faced with a choice.  Commit now to make the hard choice.  You’ve done the work.  Now go show us.

Last minute stuff—

  • It’s taper week—be smart, get some reset—It’s recommended to post and have some high intensity, but cut back on duration. Friday—rest up…..
  • What to wear….Weather forecasted is PERFECT….low of 34, high of 54…..NO RAIN…..what you were is entirely up to you (just saw Giselle picking up his speedo at V-Cleaners—no starch) it’s recommended that you are a bit cold at the start as your body will warm things up quickly.  YHC wears some “throw-aways”….my 1998 cotton turkey trot shirt…just don’t over dress…..also—since most of us really never see the sun during workouts, you may want to wear sunglasses or a hat….it sounds trivial, but all that squinting slows you down…(google it)….
  • Food—have a plan and stick to it. Look at the race website and know where and what they are giving you….everyone should be eating and drinking….half marathon guys—it will impact your last 5k if you’ve done it right….marathon guys—no short cuts on this one….eat something or walk…simple—YHC will eating a gel every 6 miles….plus I drink at every water stop…
  • Hills–don’t forget to take advantage of the downhills…shorten the stride, lean forward, and increase your turnover…your pace will increase while your heartrate goes down…it’s free speed….take it.

 

 

 

2016 Joe Davis Memorial Resolution Run Pre-Blast

The 4th Annual Joe Davis Memorial Resolution 10K/5K Run benefiting Keystone Substance Abuse Services is scheduled for Saturday January 9, 2016 at 8:00 AM starting at Walter Elisha Park in Fort Mill, SC.

This family-focused/family-friendly event has special meaning to F3 because it is in honor of the brother of our own F3 Brother Rock Thrill… aka Chris Davis.  Chris and his family established this event to capture the hope that his brother, Joe, always held onto… “Hope…never lose this.”


Here are some thoughts from Rock Thrill:

On behalf of the Davis-Boyd families, please allow me to thank everyone from both F3 and FiA for both past participation and for considering participating again this year as we stand together to fight the awful sickness and disease that is Addiction. This event would only have a fraction of the impact that it has had if it were not for you!

Unfortunately, the odds are that each of us will be affected by Addiction in some way in our lifetimes, whether it be personally, a family member or a friend.

Every day in life, we talk about the “What.” In this case, a running race. But, the “What” matters only because of the “Why,” right?

The “Why” is to spread awareness that there is help available for those struggling; hope that our family wish we had known about. Help and support saves lives.

For our family, we hold tight to Romans 8:28, which reads,

“We know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose”

It is a tough pill to swallow when you lose a member of your family or a dear friend, but we feel called to make an impact because we believe God saves lives through earthly resources when we align with Him.  We believe this race is God’s purpose for us and we want Joe’s life to continue counting for good. Many times, when we are out at a restaurant, or in a race, or anywhere, someone recognizes us and tells us that they suffer from addiction or know someone who does, and that it has impacted their life in a positive way. Those times serve as confirmation that the race is making a difference!

Yes, we are asking you to leave your comfort zone, get out of a warm bed, early on a Saturday morning, and run a distance that is challenging, on one of the coldest days of the year. It will be tough, but isn’t it a great reminder of how tough it must be to get free of Addiction?

I hope you will join us as we celebrate Joe’s life on January 9th!

Race Overview… Why You Should Sign Up!!

In 3 Years, the race has raised over $65K for the Keystone Substance Abuse Center.  Total participation has grown from 400 in 2013 to 600+ in 2015, including 200 F3 and FiA participants.  This year’s goal is to expand to 700-800 runners, including 225+ F3 and FiA participants… which is TOTALLY doable!

Here are the reasons you should sign-up and run the Joe Davis Memorial Run on January 9, 2016:
1.  Proceeds raised from registration fees and donations go to support Keystone Substance Abuse Services, whose mission is promoting health, offering hope, and restoring healing to those impacted by substance abuse and addiction.

2.  Rock Thrill has given many of you, including YHC, tons of encouragement as you have come into F3 and set and achieved your personal fitness and leadership goals.  Your participation in the race allows you to give back support and encouragement to someone that has given a great deal to our PAX.

5.  Ok… now something for YOU!  This is a great event to kickoff your 2016 fitness and commitment goals!  Last year, we had SEVERAL guys run their first 5K if not for the VERY FIRST TIME… at least in a long while!  The PAX always step-up and provide great support for all runners… young, old, fast, not-so-fast, first-time, long-time… it is just a great event for getting 2016 started in the right direction!

6.  Finally, by your participation, you encourage others in MANY ways… some ways you may never know…. You encourage neighbors with abusive addictions… You encourage your M’s, 2.0’s, friends and family to also participate… You encourage your PAX to push themselves to achieve something they might not thought was possible 6 months ago… You encourage a community to see what F3 is all about!!

MudRun Fall 2015 #Preblast Race Day

Mud Run Spring 2014 #PreBlast

We trust all of you are excited and ready to be a part in our largest gathering of F3 men. When F3 Nation descends upon the Leatherneck this Saturday, we will definitely turn some heads and draw a lot of attention. There are a few logistical changes, so this PreBlast is an attempt to provide sufficient detail so things run smoothly. A schedule of events and the F3 Starting Order are included at the bottom.

ARRIVAL**:      You should plan to arrive at The Leatherneck by 7:00am. You do not want to be late. Running from the parking lot to make your start time will make for a miserable day. The Physical Address of the Leatherneck is 1215 Valley Ridge Rd., Gaston, SC 29053. Directions are below:

**(FOR SITUATION AWARENESS THERE WILL BE CONSTRUCTION ON 1-26 AND EXIT 125 WILL BE SHUT DOWN AT 7AM).

THE TENT:      This year, the F3 tent will be right next to the starting line. You won’t be able to miss it, because we have the biggest, baddest tent on site. It will also be well marked with flags and banners, and will serve as our central meeting point.

Bag Check:      There is a bag check for normal registered runners.  This location will be chaos.  Plan to check you bag into the F3 tent. We will have several volunteers that will be staying at the tent and I’ve heard that F3 Nation brothers are pretty damned trustworthy!

SHOVEL FLAGS:      Please bring EVERY shovel flag in your Region and plant them at the tent upon arrival. This is always a significant gathering, and the flags will make a statement.

THE MUD RUN WAIVER:      Bring the COMPLETED mud run waiver form with you (ONE PER TEAM IS REQUIRED TO BE COMPELTED).TEAM CAPTAINS are responsible for your team’s waiver (we will print some extras to be available at the F3 tent). Print the waiver here:

Runner Waiver

REGISTRATION:      Don’t go register until your ENTIRE team is Assembled. You register at the registration tent (NOT THE F3 TENT).  Give them your waiver and get your race bibs and get marked up with your numbers. Team Captains will get the team’s timing chip. You will be free to come back to the F3 tent after you register.  T-shirts can be picked up (as a completed team) at the F3 tent.

THE START:      Teams start every 15 seconds. This is it. Do well.

THE COURSE:      The course layout is the same this year.  Watch Twitter (@F3MudRun) for any course recon updates prior to the race. There should be actual Marines monitoring obstacles (rather than JRROTC volunteers). The Marines are much more strict when it comes to attempting/completing each obstacle or taking penalties. With 108 teams, odds are very high that one of us will piss off a Marine with a hard-on to bust somebody. Don’t let it be you.

THE FINISH:      You must cross the finish line with your entire team. In our meetings with the Mud Run reps, they specifically mentioned this rule. Team Captains with the timing chip must finish with your three teammates and ONLY your three teammates.

AFTER THE RACE:      When you are off the course, the mud run will have fruit, water, etc. for you. You can also hang around the finish line to welcome your buddies as they finish. At some point, you will want to make your way toward the “showers” (which are hardly more than a glorified garden hose) for a rinse off. Don’t think for a minute you’re gonna get all the mud off you. That will take weeks. After you clean up a bit, make your way back to the F3 Tent for 2ndF (AND ENJOY THE BEER BOAT!!!) We will have this stocked for you and remember that GLASS BOTTLES AND PERSONAL COOLERS ARE NOT ALLOWED INSIDE THE GROUNDS.

OPERATION ENDURING WARRIOR DONATION:      Operation Enduring Warrior is an organization that supports disabled veterans through training and competing in obstacle races. You may have seen photos of the OEW guys wearing gas masks during the mud run. Their web site is here: http://www.enduringwarrior.org/

F3 Nation will again support their efforts this year with a financial donation and moral support. You may remember having the option to make a donation to OEW when you signed up on the F3 Mud Run website. We raised about $1700 that way. On the morning of the race, we will “pass the hat” again for anyone who would like to donate to OEW and increase our check size. There will be a donation bucket (very well marked)  at the tent. We will also have a F3 volunteer walking around with a bucket. Think about it – if all 420 of us gave just $5, we’d add $2100.

OEW CHECK PRESENTATION: At approximately 7:45am F3 (Fountainhead and Napalm) will present our check donation to OEW. Logistics are still being finalized regarding exactly where that exchange will take place, but we only have about a five minute window before OEW hits the starting line, and we don’t want to back up the rest of the starters. We’ll annouce this when it’s time.

PHOTOSAt approximately 11:00AM, we will take our group picture (please be at our tent at 11:00AM for this). This should not take but a few minutes. We will also have several photographers on the course.

BUSTED PAW:      The awarding of the Busted Paw will take place immediately following photos. It better be a team from F3 that wins this and not a pack if FIA gals……

 

Tenative Schedule of Events:

  • 7:00 Arrive at F3 Tent.
  • 7:15 Plant your Shovel Flags.
  • 7:00-7:30 OEW Donation/Collections.
  • 7:30-8:00 Race Prep, Check-in, Registration, Numbering (Full Team must register together).
  • 7:35-8:05 Pick-up T-shirt at F3 Tent.
  • 7:45-8:00 Check Presentation to OEW by Fountainhead and Napalm (Depends when OEW starts race).
  • 8:00-8:15 BOM by Dredd (immediately after we do Check Presentation to OEW).
  • 8:45-9:12 All F3 teams Start Race.
  • 9:45-10:45 F3 Teams Finish (Go shower and then head to F3 Tent for 2nd F).
  • 10:50 Busted Paw Trophy Presentation
  • 11:00 Final F3 Group Photo.

THE STARTING ORDER:

Since this run’s inception, we have received countless communications regarding starting times. You name it, we’ve heard opinions from every region. After carefully weighing all the information, the overwhelming consensus was that most of the regions wanted the chance to compete for The Busted Paw against each other’s best competition and on a level playing field. It also became apparent that any solution we offered was going to piss somebody off. This year we have a LOT more regions running for the first time (and not all necessarily consider themselves in the running to take home the trophy).

The defending champion South Beach is not registed to defend there team title so ALL F3 teams are together with nobody between us. Each Regional Q ranked each of the teams from their region.

When all teams were blended together for ranking,  we considered three primary factors:

  1. Evaluated past team performance, with a bit of priority consideration given to the top 8 finishing times.
  2. Gave a bit of priority consideration to the total number of teams participating from each region.
  3. Created a weighted team average based on total “points” per runner on the team.  Remember when you registed and you had to select a goal for the MudRun?  Yep, that’s what we used.  This was mostly to use as a tiebreaker where needed.

Basically each region has an equitable starting position to compete for The Paw. Any arguments and speculation should be finally decided in the arena.

While this might not be the best way, its how it was done, and it all should work out just fine.

SO The best part about this is IF you don’t like where your team is, Here are the things you can blame instead of ganging up on YHC:

  • Blame your Regional Q for giving you a Regional Seed than you think should have been better.
  • Blame your Region for not bringing more Pax to the dance.
  • Blame Yourself for not paying attention when you registered (by selecting “Simply Survive the Leatherneck” if you really meant to select “Serious Contender For the Busted Paw”).

With that said HERE are the Starting Times (and remember if you are part of F3 then every last one of you has a “priority starting time”)!

BRR–September 11th-12th….The Final Turn

F3 Nation–

On September 11th 55 teams from F3 Nation will find their way to Grayson Highlands State Park in Virginia and begin the 2015 edition of the Blue Ridge Relay.  Congrats to everyone for a) getting registered; b) getting physically prepared; and c) trying to keep your teams together.  (C may be the most difficult)

In case you haven’t seen it, start times have been posted.

If you are looking to join a team or you are looking to fill a spot on your team, let people know.  Tweet it…tag your region or tag @f3nation   at this point, it’s the best way to connect.

  1. There will be a lot of us.  F3 will be very visible. Let’s make sure that we realize that we are guests and show our appreciation to all the locals, other teams, and especially the volunteers.  This is an opportunity for us to make a positive impact on everyone that we encounter.  This is a Post that OBT shared last year.  I believe it accurately states the ideals that we want to uphold.
  2. As the race gets nearer, people are training harder, running farther, posting more.  All good things, but….be smart.  It’s better to be 10% undertrained than 1% overtrained.  This is not the race to run with an injury.  If protecting yourself from injury is not enough motivation, then do it for your teammates.  If you can’t carry your weight, then your teammates will have to.  I bet every man running will be happy to step up, but how about we be smart and not kill ourselves the next 2 weeks and catch up with our training.
  3. Navigation–there are a lot of stories of guys getting lost.  The cue sheets have mileage on them.  If you wear a GPS, use it.  It will help.  Nothing deflates team momentum like a runner getting lost on the course for an extra hour at 3AM.
  4. Rules—there are a lot of RULES  Know them.  They are there for several reasons, primarily, your safety.  Everyone must have a reflective vest and lights.  Captains…please print these out and share them with your teams.
  5. Nutrition–you will all be burning a lot calories.  Those legs, even the “moderate” ones are no joke.  Make sure you are eating and hydrating appropriately.  Its a fun event, unless of course, you collapse due to dehydration or completely cramp up because you didn’t eat enough…again, just be mindful.  Most of you don’t usually run 3-4 or even 6 times in 24+ hours.  You know who you are

Fall 2015 Mud Run Pre Blast: LATE Registration has opened with HARD close Oct 3rd!

YES It’s that time again, so get ready…the MUD RUN is coming! YHC will be the Q for F3Nation this year. Your Regional Q’s are being finalizing. Many regions have an assigned Mud Run Q for the Fall, the full list should be completed and displayed soon (updates will be made to this blast to list Regional Qs). The Ultimate Challenge Mud Run is the F3 Nation “Super Bowl,” (it’s just muddier than the one we watch on TV). Our next opportunity is Saturday, October 24th, 2015 at the Leatherneck course in Gaston, SC. We had approximately 500 pax at the Spring 2015 Mud Run. The goal for Fall 2015? 527.5 Pax (or thereabouts)…. We can do it!

ALL AO Qs talk it up to the Pax that post to your AO. Veteran runners, do it again, get better, finish faster and most of all encourage our new brothers to take the next step! Since the last MUD RUN, We have seen a lot of FNG’s dip their toe in the water to see what F3 is all about. LEAP expansion efforts have been nothing short of amazing. We will have representation from several new AOs, including several teams from #TheMission (from Oliver Gospel Mission out of Columbia)! Good Form is being promoted and the Pax are holding each other accountable. VQs are multiplying at staggering numbers. There is no better time than now to be Plant, Grow and Serve. Let’s all pull together to promote OUR event! Now it’s time, are you going to step up and help us to exceed our goal???

As usual, we have a reserved block of priority F3 starting times with the Mud Run organizers. This next bit is important: Start times: so please PAY ATTENTION:

The TOP 3 Finishers (Teams) from the Spring 2015 Mud Run will have MUD RUN priority slots. We will slot in the next 10 F3 Teams. This is all based on the below 3 conditions:

1) TEAM NAMES MUST REMAIN THE SAME
2) Team must be comprised of AT LEAST 3 members of Spring 2015 Team
3) Team roster must be submitted by the published deadline

Registration and payment this year will be the same as the last Spring Mud Run. TEAMS WILL BE MANAGED BY THE REGIONAL MUD RUN Qs! You register as an individual and then coordinate with your Regional Mud Run Q to form your team. DO NOT CONTACT F3MudRun@gmail.com or Heist regarding changes or setting up your Mud Run Team!!!! ONLY your Regional MudRun Q should be contacted for this.

Registration fees are $55 per person and the DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 12TH 2015. This deadline is based on how Eventbrite reimburses us. Registration is considered a “hard commit” with NO REFUND should you be unable to compete. If you register and cannot meet your commitment, it’s your responsibility to your team and your Region to find your replacement.

Transportation to the race is your responsibility. Coordination of charters/buses/road-trip refreshments should be coordinated through your Regional Q.

We will continue honoring Operation Enduring Warrior with a donation from F3 Nation. They support wounded soldiers, particularly amputees. If you saw them at previous Mud Run presentations, it was powerful. Several members of their group compete with prosthetics and one has no legs at all. There will be a block on the registration form to make a donation. $10 per person as an add on is suggested, but donating more, less, or nothing at all is ok. It’s completely optional. We presented OEW with a Check for $5000 at the Spring Mud Run and we are hoping to make another check presentation at the Fall Mud Run (GOAL to exceed $5,500).

FAQ:
1) When do we have to be at the race? All expected to be at our tent at 7:00am to be ready for pre-race BOM.
2) When will we do the BOM? Before 7:30am.
3) When does the Race Registration Tent Open? Registration tent open at 7:30am and ALL 4 TEAM MEMBERS MUST REGISTER TOGETHER.
4) When can I pick-up my T-Shirt from the F3 Tent? AFTER you team registers at the Registration Tent.
5) When does the race start? First teams off at 8:30am, then teams staggered after this time until a bit after 9:00am.
6) What do I do AFTER my team finished? Pat yourself on the back then head straight to the F3 Tent!
7) How long do I have to stay at the F3 tent? Can’t believe you would ask that, BUT PLEASE stay there until 11:00am. We will take our final Pax photo at 11:00am and want all to be included!

F3 Area 51’s CSAUP event is less than a week away.

What: CSAUP event with 3 options –

  • Roshambo: 14.1 miles, 7 painstations;
  • Swift Kick: 10.8 miles, 6 painstations
  • Sack Tap: 6 miles, 4 painstations

When:  Saturday, August 1st

  • Roshambo – 5am launch from Stonehenge (The Vine restaurant parking lot in Ballantyne)
  • Swift Kick & Sack Tap – 6 am launch from Centurion (Charlotte Catholic HS)

Where:

Parking/Start/Finish Logistics:

Roshambo’ers and Swift Kickers should park at Peak 51 (Matthews Elem).  The pax needs to take it upon themselves to then clowncar to either Stonehenge (launch at 5am thus meet at Peak 51 at 4:30am) or clowncar to Centurion (Charlotte Catholic) – launch at 6am thus meet at Peak 51 at 5:30am.

Sack Tappers should muster at Arbo ABC at 5:30ish and then clowncar to Centurion for the 6am launch.

 

*** Area51 is happy to sponsor this CSAUP event.  It’s not a race, rather, the intent is to keep the pax together, SF’s out front the whole way.  Site Q’s will provide water, Gatorade, etc. at each painstation.  Should be a lot of fun.  Hope you’ll join us Saturday, August 1st.

What could be more CSAUP than a 14+ mile jaunt in the hottest month of the year?  Ok, probably lots of events but nevertheless, Area51 will host the 3-option Southern Discomfort on Saturday, August 1st.

1) RSVP for hydration purposes – Site Q’s of the AO’s we visit will provide water, G2, etc.

Here’s the skinny:

Option 1: “Roshambo” – 14.1 Miles, 7 pain stations – launch from Stonehenge (The Vine – Ballantyne) at 5:00am

Option 2: “Swift Kick” – 10.8 miles, 6 pain stations – launch from Centurion (Charlotte Catholic HS) at 6:00am

Option 3: “Sack Tap” – 6.0 miles, 4 pain stations – launch from Centurion as well at 6am; finish at Arboretum

While this will be a 1st F challenge for sure — the idea will be to keep the pax together with the shovel flag carriers leading the way.  Will be great 2nd F for those not too deep in the pain cave.  The 3 options hopefully will encourage pax of different fitness levels to come out for the appropriate level of discomfort.

The Hurricane is coming!

F3 brothers the Hurricane is coming to North Charleston SC!

On Saturday, 27 June at 0700 F3 Summerville will kick out its first created #CSAUP! It will be a four hour event with lots of pain, suffering, and brotherhood. We have planned a great workout for you – challenging all parts of the body! To top it off we will hang out and drink some great beers brewed by the Low Country’s own Coast Brewing Company. You will also earn a Hurricane patch to boast of your exploits.

Since F3 Summerville first launched Faultline in January we have been blessed with tremendous growth. That first AO has spawned into so much more – Bootcamps – Faultline, Seismic, Aftershock and Magnitude. Running – Tremor. Biking – Oscillator. Swimming – Tsunami. Service – Landslide. Fellowship – Liquefaction. Faith – Epicenter. Even for all of us it is still incredible to see and feel the changes in ourselves and experience this as brothers. We have men who have never run a race prepping for the Blue Ridge Run. We have men who were in mediocre fitness levels training for a GoRuck in September. Men are challenging themselves and each other everyday and in doing so improving their lives all around – and serving the community!

F3 Summerville wants to thank all of our brothers that came down to get us started and show us the ropes. You have also offered guidance and direction in an ongoing manner!
