Forrest Gump 76 on Avon St.

August 3 has been a significant date my entire life.  My Father was born on this date in 1943.  Today is his 76th birthday.  Being the first August 3rd without him, I requested the Q at Gashouse not really knowing how it would go.  Late yesterday, I attempted to put together a weinke for the workout but was unsuccessful.  I decided to see how it would go.

No FNG’s.  Short disclaimer.  Let’s do a quick warm up.

38 IC Side-Straddle Hops (A multiple of 76)

Dry Rub takes the Painlab group and the bootcamp group heads off with YHC.

Quick Stop at the flag out front for the pledge.

The Thang

Before this moment, I really wasn’t sure what we were going to do.  I stood there briefly and realized I had to head back toward Lineberger Park for a workout I have not done in a long time…the Forrest Gump.

Off we went to run to East Garrison Baptist Church parking lot for some exercises as follows in multiples of 76:

38 Merkins OYO

19 Squats IC

38 LBC’s OYO

Mosey to Hillbilly’s Parking lot:

38 Merkins OYO

19 Squats IC

38 LBC’s IC

Mosey to the upper side of Lineberger Park past the railroad track to Avon St (I’ll explain why later) and over to the step area where fans/parents used to sit and watch baseball on the old field (where I played machine pitch and little league baseball).  Exercises as follows:

Dips IC X 38

Step ups IC X 38

Flutter Kicks IC X 38

Rinse & Repeat one more set of each

Mosey down through the park to the Flag Circle area from some quick partner work:

Partner 1 does exercise while Partner 2 runs up the path to the top of the steps at the Pool and back.  This is repeated until each person had performed 304 Freddy Mercury’s.  (Harder than expected for YHC)

Time to start the mosey back to the Schiele.  Next stop back at Hillbilly’s for another round of exercises:

Derkin’s IC X 19

Dying Cockroaches  IC X 19

Monkey Humpers IC X 19 (Rear to the road)

Mosey to East Garrison Baptist Church for the final round of exercises:

Merkins IC X 19 (No elevated spots for Derkins)

Dying Cockroaches IC X 19

Monkey Humpers IC X 19 (Rear to the road)

Box Cutters IC X 19

LBC’s IC X 38

Final Mosey back to the Schiele.

Final wall sits including some air presses IC X 38.

End of work.  Met back up with the Painlab group.

Several announcements:

BRR Rucking Group; Q Source on Sunday’s at 0730 @ Coconut Horse & Crossroads; 9/11 Memorial Climb on 9/14; One year anniversary at Mt. Hollywood on Monday.

Several Prayer Requests

The Moleskin (A very impactful day for me)

Whoopee posted he would be rucking at 0600 for some EC so I decided to join him.  I rolled in at about 0555 to find Whoopee, Roscoe, Watts Up, Voodoo & Boudin ready to ruck.  Off we went.  I have ran and rucked many miles of EC from the Schiele over the last 4 years over many different routes.   I was not leading the route today but as we turned back toward the Schiele from Bojangles, the lead guys decided to turn left on Avon St (just above Lineberger Park).  During the last 4 years, we have never turned on Avon St.  My Dad grew up on Avon St directly across from Lineberger Park and grew up walking across to the baseball field and played throughout his youth.  I told Boudin that my Dad grew up there but really didn’t realize what had just happened.  Why today?  As I brought the group out to Garrison Blvd for the bootcamp, something tugged at me to go back to Avon St, again, something I had never done during a workout at the Schiele.  Frankly, I got chills after the workout when I had time to reflect on what just happened.  Maybe my Dad was looking down at us, hopefully smiling as we went through exercises in multiples of 76.   If he was, I’m sure he laughed at our rear facing the road monkey humpers.

I’ve had a lot of great and very impactful days and workouts with F3 but today was near the top of the list.  I felt a lot of support and inspiration , especially just after the workout as I exchanged words and hugs from several of the PAX.  Thank you.  It’s been 11 months since my Dad’s passing and it is still something I think of daily.  You men have helped me every single week for the past 11 months.

Thanks for the opportunity to serve.

Until the next one.  Aye!

Inappropriate Touching

That click bait title got your attention didn’t it. Don’t normally read The Pub backblasts because they’re boring, right? All those guys do is run, right? Where’s the fun in that. Well you’re here now so you might as well keep reading to find out from where the title came. Here’s how we got there…

YHC showed up much earlier than usual on this mild Thursday morning. This was even noticed by Roscoe who greeted me with a “You’re here early.”

With about a minute to go before 0530, YHC barked out the route sounding like Mama Fratelli from the Goonies. At that point, allergies were getting the best of me, and YHC felt and sounded awful.

The route… Armstrong Park to New Hope via Perry St/Lee St. Right on Armstrong Park Dr. Right on Armstrong Park Rd and back to The Pub.

YHC and Breaker Breaker took a detour to shorten the route and arrived before a few of the other PAX. (Here’s where the title comes in) Upon return, there was talk of inappropriate touching along the way. As Q, I cannot confirm there were any inappropriate actions. Even so, I’m sure the disclaimer (which I skipped) covered that. However, the supposed offended PAX did show up with his shirt off. And the accused offender did leave prior to the COT. Take what you will from those details.

Order was restored in time for the COT.

Storm at Midoriyama

We pulled up to Midoriyama and it was raining. This has happened before and we just proceeded with our planned workout but the lightning and thunder forced us to move our little party to the picnic shelter. Pockets had the Q but planned on using parts of the vast expanse normally available to us so I told him I would come up with something while the storm raged around us. A completely soaked Swimmer joined us after surviving a rain-shortened mountain bike ride. No Blart or Slaw. I guess a little rain scared them off! Let’s go!
Warm Up
SSH x 10 IC
Moroccan Night Clubs x 10
Don Q’s x 10 IC
Low Slow Squats x 10 IC
The Thang
In Cadence exercises all x 15. It went something like this with various Pax calling cadence.
Tempo Merkins, LBC’s, Squats, Regular Merkins, Step Ups, Dips, Flutter Kicks, Stagger Merkins (Right hand forward), LBFC’s, Calf Raises, Stagger Merkins (Left hand forward), High Knees, Imperial Walkers, Irkins, Jump Squats, More Dips, Goofballs, Derkins, Dying Cockroaches, More Step Ups, Nolan Ryans (right), Nolan Ryans (left), Imperial Walker Squats, Monkey Humpers, American Hammers, CDD’s and 15 Burpees OYO. I may have missed a few in there but the goal was to work all the muscles and we did. I hoped to be able to run a few laps between the exercises but it never seemed safe enough to allow that so we didn’t take that chance. Great work from all the guys.

I had a word about being strong and asked each guy who do you need to be strong for? It could be your wife, child, parent, neighbor, friend or coworker but there will always be a need for someone to be strong. Physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually strong. We need to work to be ready to be that guy who can be strong and lead when called upon!

COT Ashhhhhh Pond took us out!

Gardening by the Yard

The PAX didn’t realize that YHC is a gardener. Roscoe does, but he wasn’t present. Crowder Green forever, ask Roscoe if you don’t know. This may be the first gardening themed workout in the history of Gashouse. This is what I remember…

Warmup:

Plank Jacks, Dying Cockroaches, Grass Pickers

Pick up some coupons from the back of my M’s kid carrier.

Mosey to the pad for some Triple Nickel.

5 Pickle Pounders (because cucumbers are grown in a garden then made into pickles) at the bottom, 5 Morning Woods at the top. X 5

Mosey up to the picnic shelter for Elevens: Dips and WWI situps.

Mosey back to the start to pick up the surprise, the big daddy double tire wheel barrow! What could this be for? Keep moseying to the Pit for the next round.

The Thang – Partner up, all the PAX does the exercises while on couple does a partner wheel barrow route (one PAX ride in the wheelbarrow while the other drives) with 10 shoulder shrugs in the middle. Trade with the next group in line and get to exercising!

Merkin Mania: 5 each of Diamonds, Merkins, Wide Arms, Crucibles, Staggered L & R, Tempo and Hand Release versions of the chest work. Aye!

Ab Killers: 10 Oblique Crunches L & R, 50 LBCs, 15 Oblique Crunches L & R, 25 LBCs, 20 Oblique Crunches

Spiderman Crawl to the line then back.

Rinse & repeat for a whole nother round. Strong work men!

Okay, so maybe everything wasn’t gardening related but we used a wheelbarrow and I’ve never heard of this in a workout.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead! Y’all are the best!!!

YHC reminded all the pax that we are all the six somewhere, but the best part of F3 is we stick together. From fundraisers to CSAUP to Whetstone, and so many other outlets. When you show up and Post at any AO in Gaston County you get treated well. On Average Most men do not have friends, especially another man we should be thankful for each other. Back to the run, We made it all the way back to Snoballz. YHC was pleased with the hard work today from the pax. It was an honor to serve.

7 of Diamonds

7 men showed to put in some work at Mt. Hollywood this morning.  No FNGs,  everyone knows the deal, it’s time!

Warm-Up:

10 Burpees

The Thang:

After the warm-up Burpees, we took a mosey to the downtown area at corner of W Catawba Ave and S Main St.  First exercise called here is the 7 of Diamonds.  This exercise is performed on a large diamond (i.e. a square).  I chose an area downtown, that should get us a good bit of running in.  For the first round, do 7 reps of an exercise at each of the 4 corners with a mosey in between corners.  Each round, you increase by 7 reps with a different exercise each round, for a total of 4 rounds.  Then you decrease the reps by 7 for each of the last 3 rounds with different exercises.  It was to go as follows:

Round 1 – 7 Burpees at each corner

Round 2 – 14 Jump Lunges at each corner

Round 3 – 21 Merkins at each corner

Round 4 – 28 Mountain Climbers at each corner

Round 5 – 21 Flutter Kicks at each corner

Round 6 – 14 Imperial Walker Squats at each corner

Round 7 – 7 Burpees at each corner

This really sounded like a good idea, but I misjudged the Diamond that we used.  This would work better by choosing a diamond that isn’t that large.  Had to call an Omaha after the 4th round, because we were running out of time quickly.  It wasn’t a complete fail, as we put in a lot of reps, and kept moving racking up some miles.

With time short, we still had time for a couple stops.  First we took a short mosey to the wall behind BB&T bank.  Here I called on 3 exercises: Hip Slappers, Donkey Kicks, and Mike Tyson’s.  We did 10 reps of each for a total of 3 rounds.

Next we started our mosey back towards the flag, but I chose the route that takes us to the small wall beside Ida Rankin Elementary School.  Here 3 more exercises are called: Dips, Derkins, and Step Ups.  We did 10 reps of each for 2 rounds. Mosey back to flag. Time

Can you slide uphill?

This seems like a strange question to use as a theme to a workout, but one that seemed worth testing. The thought came to mind because later that day YHC was heading to Sliding Rock. As I started to plan a weinke, I knew I’d first need a hill worthy of this test. I knew almost immediately where the adventure would take any PAX willing to make the journey.

As opposed to The Pub where YHC usually shows up about 2 minutes early in time to plant the flag and call out the route, I arrived at the Schiele with plenty of time remaining. After finding out Doby had Q at the Pain Lab and quickly planning the warm-up, it was 0700 and time to get going.

Disclaimer

Warm-up
SSH x 15
Merkins x 15
LBC x 15

Turned it over to Doby who led the PAX in 15 Imperial Walkers.

The Pledge

At this point, the brave Bootcamp PAX left the Pain Lab crew behind and set off on their journey.

Mosey to the front parking lot at Grier Middle. This is where pre-workout surveillance comes in handy. There had always been speed bumps in the parking lot that I’d used for markers. Since they repaved the parking lot, those speed bumps were gone, but there were crosswalks which would serve the same purpose.

Lunge to the first crosswalk and do 5 burpees. Then lunge to the second crosswalk and 5 more burpees. At this point, the PAX may have got the hint that they were not going to skip leg day today.

Mosey to the Parkwood parking lot. As YHC announced to the PAX, no upstanding Carolina fan could Q a workout without a set of 4 corners. Around 4 islands in the parking lot, 10 Crunchy Frogs, 20 Squats, 30 American Hammers, 40 Flutter Kicks. After each set, run to the next spot and perform the next exercise. It was mentioned that in the 4 corners, the pace was slowed so should we walk to each corner. However, this is the Roy Williams era so the pace is sped up and the PAX would run to each corner. Just imagine Roy on the sideline waving his arm for us to get down the court and over to the next station. After completing one trip around, we reversed course and ran the exercises back around. 40 Flutter Kicks, 30 American Hammers, 20 Squats, 10 Crunchy Frogs.

Mosey to the starting point of our climb. This climb would take place up the hill at the Dept of Veterans Services off New Hope. YHC shared with the PAX my trip later that day to Sliding Rock where it would be an easy slide in cool water. This slide would be neither easy or cool.

Partner up. Partner 1 would perform the S-L-I-D-E while partner 2 would either Bear Crawl, Lunge, or Nur up the hill. When partner 1 returned, partner 2 would run while partner 1 did the exercise of that round.

S – Squats
L – LBC
I – Imperial Walker Squats
D – Derkins
E – Everest

Everest is an exercise that was done as a group. Lunge, lunge, squat (basically, it’s a zombie walk uphill).

About two-thirds up the hill, YHC called for another E – Empty Wheel Barrel. One partner gets in Crabwalk position while the other partner holds his legs (like a wheel barrel). This was met with a great deal of angst and proved to be uneventful, but we at least had to try.

After abandoning our empty wheel barrel, the PAX continued the Everest climb until we got to the sign labeled Assembly Point. That marked the end of our journey to the top of Everest. We stopped for a group picture, and then moseyed back.

We stopped along the way to the Schiele for a deconstructed S-L-I-D-E

Squats in the Marathon parking lot
LBCs in the Parkwood parking lot
Imperial Walker Squats in the First Pres parking lot
Dips in the office parking lot beside First Pres
(mini) Everest climb through the Schiele parking lot entrance.

We arrived in time to hear the bells.
