Crossroads 7/2/23

Beautiful morning to get better. Some biked, some ran, some rucked. YHC led discussion of an individual that displayed exemplary leadership qualities. YHC chose Lewis “Chesty” Puller. He was the most decorated Marine of all time and literally set the standard by which all Marines strive to achieve. He led his Marines into some of the bloodiest battles of WW2 and the Korean War. He led by example and fought on the battlefield along with the enlisted men. He did not have to demand respect from his men, he earned it. The Marine bulldog mascot was officially named “Chesty” in 1957, and the USS Lewis B. Puller was named after him.

To Be The Man, You Gotta Beat The Man!

YHC has held the title and the belt of F3 Gastonia’s reigning champion for 3 months. It’s time to issue a challenge to the Gashouse PAX so a new champion may (or may not) be crowned. The challenge is very simple – during the month of July, the PAX who double posts the most on Tuesdays and Thursdays  will become the reigning champion. You can post at any AO you wish on Tuesday morning (Bulldog, Folsom, the Storm)  and Thursday morning (Diablo Sammich, The Pub, Folsom, the Goat), but you MUST post at Midoriyama on Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. YHC is aware there is a double post opportunity on Fridays, but that will not count. Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Midoriyama is closed on 7/4, so the challenge begins on Thursday, 7/6/23. That gives all PAX  7 days (4 Thursdays and 3 Tuesdays) to double post. YHC won’t be laying down and letting the belt go! He will be defending the title (he is the site Q for Midoriyama, DUH!). That being said, in the words of Ric Flair “To be the man, you gotta beat the man!”. Bring your “A” game, boys. The July heat at Midoriyama humbles the greatest of men. Who will accept the challenge?

If there is a tie, the tie breaker will be the PAX that has the most posts in the month of July. Just double posting on Tuesdays and Thursdays won’t be enough to win the title. Push yourselves!

“There are no points for 2nd place” – Viper, Top Gun instructor, Miramar California, 1986

Midoriyama 6/13

This BB will be short and to the point because YHC can’t remember many of the details of the workout. YHC was glad it wasn’t raining for once when he had the Q.  We had a great group of men post for another weak sauce Q!

Warmup: The usual stuff (SSH, Grass Pickers, Merkins, etc.)

PLEDGE

Thang:

Mosey to the asphalt hill that leads down to the lake for triple nickel. 5 rounds of 5 turtle crunches at the top, 5 reverse crunches at the bottom. This took longer than YHC expected (probably because it sucked).

Next, we moseyed back to the beginning of the road that leads into the ball fields. Stop at every pole on the left for 5 Mike Tysons, 10 H/R Merkins, 15 Flutter kicks (count right leg). We completed 5 rounds, then moseyed to the small practice field.

YHC called the longest mile. It isn’t really a mile. The distance around the small field is less than 400 meters.

Starting halfway down the sideline, perform 10 Burpees. Run 1/4 the way around the outside of the field and perform 10 Squats. Run another 1/4 around the field, perform 10 Merkins. Run another 1/4 around, perform 10 Big Boys. Return back to start to complete one round. R&R for 3 more rounds for 4 total laps and 40 reps of each exercise.

Mosey back to flag as time expires.

Midoriyama 6/6/23

1st F Q Flintstone has been keeping the Gashouse PAX motivated with an array of PT tests. The standard PT test, Thunder and Lightning. YHC decided to administer the Thunder PT test at Midoriyama. Of course it’s the hottest day of the year, air quality index is red and the wind ain’t blowing. Perfect conditions for a PT test on the asphalt (Q fail).

Warmup – Usual stuff

Around the turd shack and grab the blocks. Circle up and start the clock for the THUNDER PT test. AMRAP for 25 minutes of the following exercises:

  • 12 Thrusters
  • 12 Curls
  • 12 American Hammers w/ coupon (xtra suck factor)
  • 12 Block Swings
  • 12 Bent Over Rows
  • 12 Big Boys
  • 12 Heels to Heaven
  • 12 Burpees

96 Reps per round. Keep up with rounds completed and number of reps completed on the round that the PAX were completing.

About 7 minutes remained, so we performed 10 to 1 curls and overhead presses. Put the blocks up, muster at the flag for 22 Merkins for the vets and the Pledge.

The heat wore the guys down pretty quick. Halfway through the 2nd round, Leppard is laid out on the grass attempting to regain his breath. Freight threatened a mutiny and start a trail running AO immediately (you hate to see it). Defib pushed through and crushed the test (showing his future son-in-law Rip Cord how it’s done).Instead of keeping up with rounds completed, Happy Trees used his sidewalk chalk to draw happy Christmas trees on the asphalt. WikiLeaks needs to hear more good rock music. Hokie picked the worst day to get back out in the gloom, but he pushed through like a trooper. Haze was talking delirious and you could fry an egg on Pall Bearer’s head. This PT test will be even better when we perform it again in August!

Welcome to FNG Rip Cord. He was EH’d by his future father-in-law, Defib. Glad to have you at Midoriyama, brother!

Folsom 5/4

Who turned the air conditioning on? It’s May and 39 degrees. What the crap? No problem. YHC will attempt to get the bearded brethren warmed up real quick. SA and Ball Joint roll in on 2 wheels as 0530 hits.

Warmup:

5 monkey humpers IC facing SA as he walked up. We did some other stuff as well. We HAD to do gravel pickers because that’s the only warmup exercise that a certain PAX was willing to perform.

PLEDGE

Thang:

To the tennis courts for the Sheldon Cooper.

  • 10 Burpees
  • 10 Squats
  • 10 Merkins
  • 10 Big boys
  • Run a lap around the perimeter of the tennis courts

Rinse and repeat but decrease reps by 1 each round all the way down to 1.

Once you were finished, go back and pick one of your brothers up and stay with them until everyone is finished. This ate up a lot of the clock, so YHC decided on 11’s with American Hammers IC on one end, run across 2 tennis courts, Mike Tysons on the other end.

5 minutes remained so we circled up for Mary. Burpees, LBC’s, Flutter Kicks, Penguins and Big Boys were called.

Time’s Up.

Convergence at Midoriyama 4/29/23

It was a beautiful day for a convergence. The rain subsided and the temperature was cool. YHC arrives at 0615 to see some PAX getting some EC before the workout. The first of numerous flags are planted, and the PAX begin to roll in. They keep rolling in. It was an awesome sight to behold. The Midoriyama misfits gather and quickly rehearse their plan for the workout. We decide to move the herd to a large empty parking lot where the warmup would be held. We went into this knowing that a convergence is attempting to herd cats for an hour, so we tried to keep the group together as best as we could.

Pockets lead us off with some stretching and the core principles of F3. He handed it over to Broke who got the heart rate up with a 10 to 1 countdown of 4 exercises: SSH (IC), LBC’s (IC), Squats and Merkins.

With the warmup complete, Broke hands it off to Purple Haze. All PAX grab a coupon and rifle carry to the wettest, sketchiest hill behind field #4’s outfield fence. The instructions were simple – 1) rifle carry your coupon down the wet, sketchy  hill without dropping it on your head, 2) murder bunny back up the hill and perform one squat. We rinsed and repeated what seemed like an eternity. He instructs the PAX to partner up and alternate farmer carrying the coupons back towards the turd shack. YHC decides to Omaha and gather the PAX in the parking lot beside the batting cages.

Circle up for some block work. 10 to 1 block curls and overhead presses.  If a PAX set their block down it was 5 burpee penalty. Some intentionally set their blocks down to incur the 5 burpee penalty. They believed the whole group would perform the burpees. Negative, ghost rider. Only the PAX that set their blocks down performed the burpees. Thanks to Balljoint, Tesla and Roscoe for giving the others a break while you performed burpees! We then escalated 1 to 10 the same exercises.

We moved on to a quick round of core work. YHC remembers Big Boys, Flutter kicks, Heels to Heaven, Dying Cockroaches, Corkscrews and Freddie Mercs being called.

Back to the blocks for 10 to 1 with squats and block swings. We got down to 5 reps when YHC Omaha’d for the last 10 minutes. 100 Burpees in 10 minutes. With a EMOM timer set for 10 minutes, Burpees are performed in an ascending/descending order:

  • Minutes 1 and 10 – 8 Burpees
  • Minutes 2 and 9 – 9 Burpees
  • Minutes 3 and 8 – 10 Burpees
  • Minutes 4 and 7 – 11 Burpees
  • Minutes 5 and 6 – 12 Burpees

Time was up and coupons returned. We circled back up for the Pushing Rocks Challenge Awards. Flintstone and Roscoe handed out patches for the PAX who posted at least 20 times a month. The Midoriyama Misfits were given their awards for winning the Pushing Rocks challenge. YHC had the honor of receiving the F3 Gastonia regional championship belt. He must admit, that was freaking awesome! Even the baseball players taking batting practice were amazed as Flintstone held the belt high for everyone to see! Kudos to SLT for coming up with such an awesome award!

We said the pledge of allegiance, and some of the baseball players joined in with us! #Impact

NMM:

Kudos to Flintstone for initiating the Pushing Rocks Challenge. The number of posts for the first 3 months was higher than last year (and probably any other previous year). Having a goal and being part of a team to achieve that goal motivates men to push harder. He and Gearwrench have been crunching a lot of numbers to keep the challenge going smoothly.  Thank you for the hard work behind the scenes, men!

YHC also wants to re-emphasize the importance of picking up the six. Whether you’re picking up the FNG about to splash merlot (as Roscoe did for YHC when he first posted) or getting one of our other brothers, try to pay attention and pick them up. They may going through some rough times with family, their job may be crushing them, anything could be going on. They will appreciate it when their brother(s) come back to get them. YHC has been the six plenty of times and it was always awesome when one of the guys (usually Sister Act or Freight) that would come back and get YHC. That’s a big part of F3 that makes it more than a workout. It’s friendship, camaraderie and lasting relationships that matter. Remember that we are out there for the guys around us more than we are for ourselves.

Finally, YHC wants to give round of applause to the rest of the Midoriyama Misfits. All of these men gave it all they had and held each other accountable. Thanks to you for letting YHC be a member of the team that has set the bar for all other Pushing Rocks Challenges to beat. With that being said, cue “We are the champions” by Queen-

L8R SK8RS,

The Midoriyama Misfits

Crossroads 3/26/23

YHC picked up the Q because he knew most of the PAX would be downrange running relay races. It was also YHC’s birthday. Yes, after 3 years of hanging on to 49, he finally hit RESPECT status. Rumors and not-so-well wishes of YHC’s demise have been blowing in the wind for a while now. Haters are gonna hate!

Some ran, a few rucked. We met for COT with a blatant disregard for the Pledge. Sorry, men. Big Q fail.

All stayed for Q source. Broke bought a cake and we had coffee and cake while discussing Q source! That’s a HIM right there! The topic was Team Development. Great discussion by the guys (as usual). YHC didn’t finish all the material, so chalk another Q fail up.

Announcements:

  • Q vs. Q at Folsom on 4/1 @ 0630
  • Community foundation run immediately after. Be there by 0830
  • Gaston Young Life Golf Tournament on 5/15. See Buckshot for details.

Midoriyama 3/16/23

A beautiful evening at Midoriyama. This is one of the very few time YHC has Q’d and it wasn’t raining. The Q was resting a sore knee, so not a lot of running was planned. Def Leppard was a no-show due to product testing their newest mattress. He obviously overslept. Hate to see it. Let’s get going.

W/U:

  • Seal Jacks
  • 5 Burpees (because Breaker Breaker was late. Not really.)
  • Grass Pickers

PLEDGE

Thang:

Grab a coupon and go to the parking lot on the other side of the turd shack.

15 to 1 – 15 curls, 15 overhead press. 14 curls, 14 overhead press all the way down to 1. A lot of mumblechatter with keywords “swole” “pumped” and “that’s what she said”. Freight was about to leave the workout to show his M his “awesome pump”.  YHC doubts it would’ve made a difference.

Next, we partnered up for some Dora. Partner 1 FARMER carries (NOT fireman carries) the block(s) across the parking lot, 10 CDD’s, then return while partner 2 performs ab exercises.

  • 100 Big Boys
  • 200 Reverse Crunch
  • 300 LBC’s

Circle back up for another round of 15 to 1. Exercises were overhead tricep extensions and squats.

We still had time for some 4 corners escalator.

  • 10 Mike Tysons
  • 10 Mike Tysons, 20 Freddie Mercs
  • 10 Mike Tysons, 20 Freddie Mercs, 30 Werkins
  • 10 Mike Tysons, 20 Freddie Mercs, 30 Werkins, 40 SSH

Time was up.

  • YHC’s 2.0 and her college experience

Solid work by everyone who came out expecting a weak sauce Q. Great to see Happy Trees at Midoriyama. He’s rolling right in with the squad and accelerating. Breaker Breaker made it out to Midoriyama. Great to see you, sir! Don’t forget to say an encouraging word to your brothers. We have no idea what some our brothers are quietly going through.

YHC took us out in prayer.

Midoriyama 2/28/23

YHC picked up the last Q for the month of February. The Rock Pushing Challenge is in full swing, and the numbers across the region are impressive! YHC wanted to bring a good beatdown, so here’s what he came up with:

Warmup:

  • Burpees
  • SSH
  • Don Q’s

PLEDGE

Thang:

Mosey to practice field for Blackjack. It’s identical to 11’s, just more reps. Number of reps adds up to 21 instead of 11. Exercises called were Hand Release Merkins and Squats.

That took 2/3 of the workout time allotted, so we performed Iron Mike Tyson Climbers. They are performed like Iron Hulk with a 1 to 4 ratio. Instead of Merkins and Air Presses, the exercises are Mike Tysons and Mountain Climbers. We made it through round 5 and paused for some core work.

Core Meltdown was an Ab routine provided by Short Sale a year or so ago. In rapid succession, we performed:

  • 20 Flutter Kicks
  • 20 LBC’s
  • 10 Leg Raises
  • 20 Freddie Mercurys
  • 15 Penguins
  • 10 Crunchy Frogs
  • 20 American Hammers
  • 15 Turtle Crunches
  • 10 Reverse Crunches

We then resumed and finished rounds 6-10 of Iron Mike Tyson Climbers. These were a real crowd pleaser!

Mosey back to the flag as time expired.

Announcements:

  • Extinction Run 3/4 at 0930, NOT 0900
  • Community Foundation Run 4/1. Sign up before 3/15. Prices go up after that date.

Folsom 2/16/23

YHC picked up a Q at Folsom from site Q Gear Wrench for 2/16. This would be YHC’s 2nd Q in the same week. Folsom workouts have been “coupon heavy” as of late, so YHC decided to utilize the tennis courts for the workout. The Bearded Brethren arrive. It’s 0530. Time to punch the time clock and get to work.

Warmup:  Seal Jacks, Gravel Pickers, Hillbillies, Arm Circles

Thang: Mosey to tennis courts.

Line up at one end and facing the far end of all 6 tennis courts. YHC originally called for 6 of the following circuits, but ended up with 5 due to some impromptu Mary in the middle. Each circuit consisted of:

  • 5 Burpees
  • Lunge walk across 1st tennis court
  • 10 Mike Tysons
  • Bear Crawl across 2nd court
  • 15 H/R Merkins
  • Lunge walk across 3rd court
  • 20 Reverse Crunches
  • Bear Crawl across 4th court
  • 25 Squats
  • Lunge walk across 5th court
  • 30 LBC’s
  • Bear Crawl across 6th court
  • 35 SSH at the far end
  • Mosey back to start

Three circuits were completed when YHC decided to circle to troops for a short break for some Mary. We performed Homer/ Marge to “Flower” by Moby (the bring Sally up, bring Sally down song). It’s been awhile since YHC had performed this. He must admit that it still sucks as bad as the last time he performed it.

Once finished we, resumed the circuit training for 2 more circuits. Quick mosey back to the flag for the pledge and time’s up.
