The Boars Nest is Born – Preblast

Despite somehow finding my way into the Palmetto 200 this year, I have said many times I am not a runner and I have the Strava timeslips as proof. I know running is great cardio, but I have also learned rucking is a good way to get benefits similar to running without the impact, not to mention the 2nd F component.

I was already thinking about it when Whoopee kicked off Diablo Sammich earlier this year. Seeing the early success there further reinforces that guys are interested in this!

As the saying goes, “if you want to do it, Q it”….so I will! After talking with Stroganoff, Sister Act, Roadie, Whoopee, and a few others, I am pleased to announce F3 Gastonia’s 2nd Rucking AO will be launching 4/21/19!

It will leave from Ingles in Dallas at 6:15 am for one hour and end at 7:15 am each Sunday. It will be alligned with Crossroads, similar to the Gashouse/Painlab setup. We will share a COT and be able to join together for Q-Source.

I will serve as site Q and take the Q on the 21st, but I will be looking for men to step up and lead weekly. This is intended to be an organized ruck workout. There will be simple rucking, but we will push the pace (no running though!). We will also include coupon work, heavy carries, obstacles, and whatever else we can come up.

So the name….I love the Smokey and the Bandit-themed name of Diablo Sammich and thought it would be cool to keep that 80s car-chasing/TV-Movie theme. Of course, we need that “North of 85” flair. I mentioned my name suggestion to a few guys and all were in agreement I had THE right name! The name be The Boars Nest, in reference to the the legendary watering hole from The Dukes of Hazzard. (It may be noted you can also buy Boars Head meats at Ingles).

So, get your sack in order and join me on the 21st!!!!

The View From Behind the Windshield of F3GashouseUno Van 1

As a first-timer, I have been both dreading and looking forward to the Palmetto 200 relay ever since I committed to running. “What a way to push myself!” “Why did I sign up for this?” “This is going to be a great time with some good friends.” “This is going to be terrible!” All of these are statements I have uttered the past 3 months.

Hacksaw, Oompa, Blart, Montross, Seuss, met up at Pocket’s garage like vandals in the night, plotting an attack and loaded up the van at Oh-so-dark-thirty minus our two spies (Def Leppard & Sparky), who had previously infiltrated into the enemy camp. During the ride down, you could feel the excitement in the air. Blart shared stories of competing brothers, boat shoes, cargo shorts, and polos. Oompa was oddly quiet, presumably soaking in the situation and resting his jawls for future verbal thrashings. Dr. Seuss wanted coffee which, as we all learned, is the cornerstone of his diet. Hacksaw was already on his job and behind the wheel, cannon-balling down 77 Southbound making sure we were on time. YHC was right in the middle of conversation, making sure everyone knew about the RunGo app, and feeling really anxious about this first leg which, BTW, was mine.

We arrive a little after 5 after a quick pit stop with plenty of time to get settled, pickup Sparky and Def, and spend some time with the F3GashouseDos Van 1, with whom we would both battle and encourage for the next 29+ hours. Before we knew it, the relay was on and so was the adventure. Here are a few highlights for each member of Van 1.

— Montross — YHC came out strong on leg 1 and set a PR pace for a distance over 5 miles. I was shocked and felt great. I was at a 100 on the confidence meter. My 2nd run humbled me…I came out faster than I meant to, the sun wore me down, and it was all I could do to push on and not puke for the past 1.5 miles…but push on I did! JJ did not get that elusive kill! By the 3rd run, I really just wanted to finish my goal of not walking at all…I slowed the pace down, and just ran the smoothest, calmest 5.6 miles I’ve ever ran. I enjoyed the moon, soaked in the moment and tried to enjoy my final leg, picking up a kill along the way. As I approached the exchange zone, I dug in for one last charge. I was the first one from our van to be finished and that was a great feeling! From a physical standpoint, I learned 2 things on this trip. First, get out and walk around a lot…I did and this helped me stay loose as well as let me interact a lot with Team Dos. Second, get some afternoon runs in…I was not really prepared to run in the sun on leg 2. It beat me up pretty good and cost me some time on my 3rd leg!

— Oompa Loompa — (these words are from the Ol’ Marine himself!) – Met up with Team Two at start. Two always comes in second in numbering sequence. Our giraffe was kicking the walls of the starting stall with anticipation of starting. 3, 2, 1, Go! Covering 8 meters with every bound he quickly left our sight. We hopped back into the Team 1 Van 1 and speed over to the exchange zone. In comes JJ from Team 2 (Booooo!) who passes baton to Allen Tate. Where is our young giraffe?
Here he comes bounding and running like lions are chasing him on the Savannah. Quick baton switch to Oompa and away the ancient marine waddles trying to keep AT within sight. About halfway through our 5 mile route, a school bus was sitting at a red light blocking his view of the directional sign. AT, being a rock pusher runs right past the sign, as he is more interested in out running Oompa than staying on course.

The bus moves, and voila, there is the sign informing me “left turn Clyde”. I follow the directions and watch Chief rapidly increasing the distance between us as he goes off the reservation. Eventually Oompa gets to the exchange zone before Allen Tate. All are surprised that Oompa got there way before Allen Tate. Legend has it that he is still lost in the hinterlands of South Cackalacky.

The rest of the P200 was a delirious victory party. Did you hear about the time Oompa beat Allen Tate to the exchange zone? Ran second leg later that afternoon. Gave last leg to Hacksaw so he could share the running experience with Round Up.

— Blart— While in the gloom, you may think of Blart as a guy who doesn’t usually say a lot and, when he does, it’s always hilarious. I’ve also come to see Blart as a listener. He’s always paying attention and listening. Blart was down on himself after his first leg. FWIW, most of us would have been more than pleased with his time, but he was showing that competitive fire! From his stories with Ash Pond and Slaw to his one-liners, Blart brought a special piece to our van…not to mention he took the sandbags off and ran very well. While he was disappointed with his first leg, he crushed his second leg in the heat that he is all-so-familiar with from Midoriyama and was in rare form as he blistered his final 3-ish mile leg. I’ll take the big guy on my relay team any day of the week!

— Sparky — Of all the guys in the van, I feel like I know the “ultimate sandbagger” the best. Sparky is something else…one of the most devoted God-fearing (and loving) men I know, while still maintaining that sneaky streak to stir the pot a bit. He had fire in his eyes as he chased after Moses on leg 4. While he didn’t quite overcome the heads-start, he was flirting with a 7-minute mile pace. I told y’all he is a sandbagger! Sparky just went out and did work for all 3 legs. I will point this out though….we saw this girl running during he relay who kicked her left leg out every time she stepped…just the left leg. We started calling her Side Straddle Hops! She ended up running leg 16 into Santee Park with Sparky…he ran her down and got the kill as he approached the end of the leg, but she got the revenge kill moments later. In other words, Sparky was killed by the girl with the limp! Sparky came away from that leg looking to jump in the lake…he just wanted to cool down from the blazing sun but changed his mind after realizing it was a 10 foot cliff into the lake! Way to step in at the last minute as a runner and, not only run, but run well.

— Def Leppard — The Silver Fox is no rookie when it comes to relays. Leppard is held in high regard by all around F3 Gastonia and I was more than happy to see he was going to be in my van. Leppard got the shortest end of the straw when it come to our van’s running legs. Leg 5 was just terrible. He ran about 1.5 miles down a sandy dirt road that looked more like Daytona Beach than an actual road…..but it was uphill! Leppard plotted along though, just as you’d expect.

I thought he may beat the van on his second leg to Lonestar BBQ, but Seuss arrived at the starting line at the same exact time Leppard did! Leppard was hitting the wall as we approached his last run though. As Def looked forward to an 8 mile run, Sparky sang a song title “2.78”, clearly in reference to the 2.78 miles he was getting ready to run! The fact that Hacksaw spent an hour of sleep time slamming doors on the van (more on that later) probably didn’t help! I could see his spirits rise as Sparky was running…it’s like Leppard got his mind set and he was ready to go when it was his time. He knocked those 8 miles out to finish his runs, despite nearly depositing his dinner on the side of the road and breathing smoke for 3 miles.

— Dr Seuss — This was the one guy I didn’t really know well going into this trip. I had heard through Sparky and several others that Seuss is just a great man who loves the Lord! Well, that was just evident. Such a nice humble man. There were some things I learned during this trip as well. First off, he has a little competitive streak! As runner 6, he was the last to hit the course and he had some pent-up angst when he left. Just about the time he took to the course, we see some young 20-something jumping around, doing burpees, taking his shirt off, etc and talking junk. I think the words he used were something like ‘no Respect is going to catch me’. Well, Seuss was after his tail pushing to a 7:06 pace on his first leg. He did not catch that young buck but he most definitely outran him. The lead was closed considerably!

Something else I learned, he lives off coffee. If you ever can’t find Seuss, start by looking at Starbucks. We think that is the key to his speed.

The coolest thing I learned about Seuss though is he is always looking to pray for others. As Seuss was racking up kills, we were joking about how polite he probably was as he passes people. “Excuse me”. “Pardon me”. (note – rumor is Quiche says “You just got Quiched!” when getting a kill, does Bret say “You got Seussed?”) As were discussing this though, Spark mentioned how Seuss likes to pray for people and he is always looking for ways to pray for us all as he is running and posting with us! Dr. Seuss is a real HIM!

— Hacksaw — “Our Time was well spent , I watched, learned and took a little bit from each one of you thank everyone of you for taking time for me and Oompa thank you for letting me run, one more men let’s pray that the Lord speaks through us in a way that other men will want to follow , Hacksaw !!!! ”

Hacksaw is the Wildman of Folsom. He’s wired differently than most! He is as competitive and driven as anyone I know. He also cares for others as much as anyone I know..the sincerity and love with which he treats the wrestlers he coaches (and other kids) is impressive. He does it for the right reasons! It’s also so amazing to see the relationship he and Roundup have as Father and Son! From a P200 perspective, I appreciate him signing up to drive and be a part of the team. Hacksaw got us there quickly and was sure to check the pressure on each tire of the van on a regular basis (by rubbing those tires against the curbs!).

Leading up to the event though, it was clear he wanted to run. He’s been battling injuries and clearly he wasn’t in position to run 15-20 miles but he made it clear he would pick up a leg if anyone needed him. Well, sometime late Friday, Oompa decided to let Hacksaw pick up his final leg (#26 for those tracking at home). From that point forward, Hacksaw was an animal. He was rocking back and forth in the seat. Pacing at stops. He spent half of our break time unloading and re-packing the van and keeping people up. He was jacked! As I finished up leg 25, Hacksaw was in the road getting in 50 Merkins to get ready to run! Animal. As I handed the baton, Hacksaw came out like a bulldozer with his head down and rollin! Thanks for stepping in to run Hacksaw but most importantly, just thanks for being you and being a part of our team!

— Best Idea of the Trip —

Once Van 1 finished up, it was off to IHOP for some grub. Not sure who to credit with this, but we found our way to the KOA campground for showers after breakfast. Solid idea guys! That hot shower on Saturday morning was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! Refreshed and revived, we hit the road for the finish line and we saw some runners on the side of 17. We knew we’d finished our legs about 30 minutes behind team Dos and figured we’d end up finishing the event just a bit behind our fellow Gashouse HIMs.

— The Story of the Dark Angel —

As we looked at the runners, we recognized Breaker Breaker chugging along down 17. We beeped and cheered for him and then, about 1/4 mile down the road, we saw Bedpan! In the lead, giving it all he had, and looking exhausted! Our van’s energy instantly went to 10! I yelled ‘pull over, let’s give Bedpan some water!!!”. I jumped out of the van with a bottle of water in hand a bit ahead of Bedpan. I walked to him in my black F3 shirt, dark hat, and dark pants. Bedpan didn’t recognize me at first. I yelled something at him and he was like ‘Montross!!!!’ I ran alongside him as he took a few gulps, encouraging him. He said ‘I couldn’t tell who you were, you were like a mirage! You were like an angel in the dark! You’re a Dark Angel!’ I just told him ‘you’re getting it done Bedpan, we’re winning, keep doing what you’re doing and finish strong’ and I gave him a big slap on the butt for good measure. I heard him yell as he kept on rolling to the exchange zone.

The team had already gotten some water for Breaker as well so we headed out, telling Freight BP had a small lead. Freight’s response. “That’s not enough.” Freight needed help from above. He needed support so we decided to stop in and lay hands on ol’ Freight!!! Freight left the final exchange zone in a Frenzy with a small headstart.

— The Ballad of Fast Ricky —

First off, I want to say Freight probably helped and encouraged me as much as anyone as I started P200 training. He ran with me, he talked about his experiences…he (as well as Def Leppard) really helped me get going on my preparation and I appreciate that! I like to mess with him by calling him Fat Ricky and Golden Rekeever, but I have utmost respect and appreciation for him. Freight is a real leader and a HIM. Props to both Freight and Broke for heading up the teams!

That being said, Freight dashed out of the final exchange zone with a small lead of just over 2 minutes. We look back to see Dolph, in all his masculine glory, moving around and getting psyched. He was like a race horse in the gates, about to be unleashed! As Dolph explodes from the exchange zone, we all hop in the van and off to the finish line.

The math was close. Some said Dolph would pass Freight. Some said there wasn’t enough time. No one knew what was coming as both Gashouse teams waited with excitement! We saw a guy come around the corner in black that looked a little like Freight. Then, to our dismay it was a runner from another team. Then we see another black shirt. Was this Freight? We couldn’t tell!!!! Then a runner in grey…no mistaking, that WAS Dolph….and another runner in black behind Dolph! Oh my, it was intense! About 2/3 down the length of the pond we realized what we were seeing…Fast Ricky had done it he had held off Dolph! Freight was laying it all out on the line as he came down the final stretch of what turned out to be a TRUE Glory Leg. F3GashouseUno crossed the line together! Incredibly, after 205 miles and just over 29 hours, both teams crossed the finish line within about 30 seconds of each other.

Just as impressive though, while that was exciting, that was quickly pushed aside and the friendships and brotherhood of F3 Gastonia rose as both teams congratulated each other. Competing and finishing together was the best result we could have asked for. I’ve heard people say you can’t plan it like that…teams tried to stay together and it never worked out. It was amazing that we finished that closely!

In the end, it was a great experience for F3GashouseUno Van 1, as I’m sure it was for all the other vans. The soreness wears away but the memories stay! I appreciate all you guys for pushing me and I hope I helped push you as well. It was a great experience. Guys are already thinking about ‘next time’ and so am I.

Hooligans Out Here Rock Blockin’!

As part of my ongoing effort to Q all of F3 Gastonia, I picked up one of the open Q slots at Midori-ya-mama. While I have posted there several times and know most of those guys well, I felt a little nervous as I didn’t want to go overboard running with the P200 coming up, but I wanted to make sure I left the guys with a solid workout. The Trail O Tears workout went so well at Painlab and Folsom that I figured why not just rinse and repeat. Swimmer confirmed there was a secret stash of blocks hidden in the woods so I decided no reason to bug Sparky and get his.

I pull into Poston Park just in time for a quick lap around the park in my truck for recon. I got in a little stretching and exchanged some pleasantries. 5:30 hits, let’s clock in and get to it!

Warmarama:

SSH 20 IC – a little chatter about how I started these so I picked up the pace and got a few extras in to reel in the natives. With Freight, Sister Act, Oompa, and Pizza Man among others in the group, there will be no shortage of advice and smart ass-ery today!

Mountain Climbers 15 IC

Toy Soldiers 10 IC – if you come to my Q, I always do these to stretch my legs one last time!

Morrocan Night Clubs while we wait for a few late arrivers.

Let’s Mosey across the street.

Thang:

First up on the Trail O Tears is always Route 66 – lunge walk to every other line, do Mike Tysons. 1 at the first stop, 2 at the 2nd…increasing to 11.

Next up is always Route 66 with a bear crawl. Crawl to every other line and do Bobby Hurleys. 1 at the first stop. 2 at the 2nd l, increasing to 11. I notice Sister Act leading a fellowship mosey in the 6. WTF! He says he and he and his group were doing their Route 66 the other direction. There are doubters of his statements! Hey, you vs you playa!

Lets mosey to the soccer field in the right corner for some core work!

Circuit 1
LBCs 15 IC
Rosalitas 15 IC
Big Boys 15 single count

Rinse and repeat

Circuit 2
Flutter Kicks 15 IC
Crossover LBCs 15 IC right leg, 15 IC left leg
X-Crunches 10 single count

Quick time check amd I need to move on so I skipped round 2.

This is where my weinke went off the rails. We walknover to the woods and the blocks have been smashed! NOOOOOOO! We have some fools out here Rock Blocking!!!! That is the physical upperbody beat down that makes the workout complete, IMO. I was a little frustrated but it is what is, the Q has to adapt amd I now have 15 minutes to fill! Lets Mosey!

I am scanning the terrain debating 11s and triple nickels and settle on using one of the rear soccer fields for Dora 1, 2, 3. Partner up, 100 Merkins, 200 Flutter Kicks (thanks Slaw for the assist), and 300 LBCs. Turns out, in hindsight, this probanly worked out well for me personally. Running on that field is great..it is very soft which is good for my tired legs and hips. I missed running Sunday so gettig a little extra running and high paced cardio was a good thing loading up to the P200. We were approaching the end of our time as we wrapped up so we mosey back to the flag.

Sister Act led 22 for the vets. My watch said 6:15 but evidently it os 2 minutes fast sp we got in a few burpees OYO. Time!

Announcements: P200, Folsom and other AOs open this Saturday, Crossroads will be closed Sunday due to the P200. Convergence 3/30 at Folsom, 3rd F event 4/12 (come to this!!!) Bible Study at Allen Tate’s house next Thursday. I think that was all of then. We had many prayer requests: a friend of Wojo facong a lot of difficulties, Allen Tate’s mom, Rockabilly’s back injury, those battling addiction, Oompa’s mom, Pockets’ family. YHC took us out in prayer. Pledge to the flag and nameorama to wrap it up.

Moleskin: I have a ton of respect for the guys that post at Midoriayama. It was an honor to be out there leading today. Guys like Slaw and Def had encouraged me all as much as anyone along my F3 journey! Guys like Freight and Pizza Man set the tone and have motivated me and I see then as the chiseled vets (well, at least Pizza Man is chiseled LOL). Sister Act gives everyone a hard time but he always has my back. He constantly picks up Qs at Folsom when he isn’t doing dance dad stuff and he has had a big hand in making Folsom a consistent beatdown on Saturdays. I have seen him go from near the front to always out front! Blart is always a steady-Eddie. He is faster than I am and I have always seen him as a guy I can chase after and he will make me better…and I did during the CSAUP Relay! Oompa has run with me when I was recovering from injury, given me a hard time when he finds the opportunity, and is one of my favorite guys in the gloom (my M really likes him too). I have posted with Swimmer many times and while he can bootcamp, he is known for his legendary bike rising and fertility. Always enjoy seeing him! Tyson is a normally quiet guy whonalwaysnseem to have a nice word to say..I always think of when he ran about 9 miles one day at Folsom to pick up the 6 for Tool Time..that day proved for me (amd several others) that I could run for distance. O have gotten to know Dr Seuss a bit more recently and look forward to spending tome woth him on the P200. We always joke to SA that Dr Seuss is a REAL HIM. Well, we aren’t lying. Those are the guys I know best, but I always hear good things about Virus, Wojo, and now Termite. Of course, Gumby and Tater Hole! Can’t forget my fellow weekday Folsom brothers who are killing it with 2-a-days right now. Gumby always impresses in workout, but also as a man! I habe know Tater Hole for about 3 months now and let’s just say he fits right in at Folsom. I can see his workouts will be the ones you really look forward too! I am glad you guys made it out there. Thanks to all of you guys!

South of the Border

A few weeks ago, I saw something HIPAA mentioned about Qing every site and decided that was a challenge I want to take on this year. Some sites are hard for my schedule, but I’m going to find a way to Q at every location this year….and what better time to Q Coconut Horse than as I’m hitting the homestretch of P200 training!

I like to try to stay north of 85 as much as possible. I have a reputation to uphold! Whenever I come south of the Gaston-Dixon line, I have to be careful not to let too much yuppie rub off on me LOL!!!!
I felt comfortable since I was more in my truck! The weather was beautiful, the birds were chirping (well, they were chirping somewhere, I didn’t hear them), the bees were…well they aren’t doing much yet either….but there were 12 men at the Teeter for a little mosey around lower Gastonia. Paces varied but everyone made it back safe and sound and remains to fight another day! Good work by all. Thanks Gastone for picking up the flag for me (Q fail) and also for hanging out until 6:30 so I could leave at “Clydesdale” time and be sure I made it back in time!

Announcements: P200 upcoming, Convergence at FOLSOM on 3/30 (Tool Time, Freight, and Woop-dee-dang-doo will be Qing), 2nd F events on Fridays at the Station in Belmont (contact Tiger for more info…these guys are consistent so get out there!), 3rd F at Allen Tate’s if anyone is interested (once monthly). (I may have missed one here, the note on my phone crashed). Prayer requests: F3 PAX from Hartsville who passed Saturday during a race, Whetstone, Breaker’s sister-in-law’s father in hospice, Gastone’s father, Nikki Bailey and family, and an unspoken request. YHC took us out in prayer.

Moleskin: I encourage everyone running at Crossroads to visit the Horse and vice versa. It is a great change of scenery and both offer different challenges. More important, it gives you a chance to mix up Q source and learn with some other guys you aren’t as used to discussing the weekly topic with.

On a personal note, I ran the entire loop without stopping, which I was unable to do last time I tried in Spring 2018. That was something I have been wanting to “check off my list” for a while now!

Crossroads – P200 Training Hits the Home Stretch

17 posted for Crossroads on this wonderful Sunday. A few ruckers and a lot of runners. Props to the guys who participated in the Rooster the day before and made it out today. Pizza Man grabbed a recovery ruck while Gold Digger, to no one’s surprise, was seen burning up the streets as he normally does. Keep up the great work.

We went through announcements and, as we were wrapping those up, we were introduced to Sgt. Big Country. This a REAL hero and HIM folks! He saw the flag and came by to ask what we were about. He told us he had lost his leg while serving our country and just told us how seeing those colors just triggered something in him. He does some motivational speaking as well. Sgtbigcountry is his Instagram handle.
YHC asked him if he’d lead us in the pledge and a prayer and, I must say, that was one of THE most inspiring and emotional pledges I’ve ever been a part of. We gave him all the info so don’t be surprised if you see him around some of our AOs soon.

Anouncements: P200 upcoming, 2nd F on 3/22 at the Ole Dallas Brewery to watch some roundball, Joe Davis run, 3/9 Nomads to F3 Metro (ask Freight for details)

Folsom Pays For It’s Actions

By now, many of you are well aware of the ongoing butt-hurt I (and Allen Tate) have experience since last Thursday. Allen Tate was originally scheduled as the Q for today and was dying (maybe that wasn’t the best term to use!) to take revenge on all of the PAX today. Unfortunately, after a bit too much rock-pushing Sunday and some health worries, it wasn’t a good idea for him to Q and I was more than ready to step in! I felt like my Trail O Tears workout from Painlab this weekend was a real crowd-pleaser and, considering I was still sore from it on Monday, I knew it was just the type of thing to bring to Folsom for “revenge”.

Let me say this first, what a crowd at Folsom today! 15 men posted this morning. We have had a steady influx of FNGs so far this year and they keep returning. Our newer guys are bringing FNGs so the fever is spreading. It really is exciting!

We did have a FNG this morning so the disclaimer was given! We welcome Lion King to Folsom!

Warmarama:

Let me just tell ya, ol’ Tee-ron was pretty fired up and ready to bring the heat today! I intentionally came out of the gate with a fast pace to set the tone with 20 SSH in cadence. FNG was probably like “Oh crap, what am I doing here”.

Also, we did:
10 Toy Solders in cadence
10 Cotton Pickers in cadence

Grab a block and let’s move to the tennis courts.

Beatdown: This is the Trail O Tears!

First up, Route 66 with Mike Tysons at each mid-court and between courts across the Tennis Courts (1 MT at the first stop, 2 at the 2nd, 3 at the 3rd, etc). Being that this is Folsom and we push rocks ’round these parts, we did a 12th set at the end of the courts. (a suggestion to all of you who want to work the quads, do Mike Tysons without the curb. It is a different exercise!)

Plank for the 6 and some Nolan Ryans to mix it up. Pause for a Countoff and back to it.

For our trip back, a modified Route 66. Bear Crawl across the courts, and do Low Squats at each mid-court and between courts (1 Squat at the first stop, 2 at the 2nd, 3 at the 3rd, etc)

Plank for the 6. Recover.

I altered a bit from the Painlab version to give the shoulders a quick rest. Rudolph commented Saturday that I had totally blasted the shoulders going back to back with Route 66’s and blocks so I felt like breaking it up would be better and I think it was. Let’s work on those abs.

2 circuits of:
LBCs 15 IC
Rosalitas 15 IC
Big Boy Situps 10 single count

1 circuit of:
Flutter Kicks 15 IC
American Hammers 15 IC
X-Crunches 10 single count

I debated another set but time is flying by so time to grab a block. Walk with your block across the court and between each court, do 10 curls and 10 overhead presses (yes Medicine Woman, both exercises) including the end (Rock-pushing!). Plank for the 6, let’s bring it back. Plank for the 6.

Now we return, doing 10 Cinder Block Swings between each court (like kettlebell swings). That ends up being 60 swings for everyone except Roundup who did like 1,387. Plank for the 6.

I had a few minutes before my finale so I turned the planks into Blood on the Concrete (Makhtar Ndiayes) – 10 in cadence.

Recover….errr…wait, let’s grab the blocks and do 10 Get-ups! Lots of modifying here but I’m not judging. Those are hard to do! I think my long lanky body helps here!

Ok, circle up, we have about 4 minutes left. Time for some Chumbawumba! Everyone left it on the courts as we did Side Straddle Hops through the song and Burpees for every “I get knocked down”. Way to push guys!

Return to the parking lot. 22 for the Vets. Now I’m done! Time.

Announcements: Pledge. Convergence on 3/30 at Folsom, P-200 on 3/22 and 3/23. I forgot to announce there is also a 2nd F event at Old Dallas Brewery this month on Feb. 22nd. Prayer Requests: Allen Tate, AT’s mom, Rockabilly’s mom, MW’s 2.0 and a family member. YHC took us out in prayer.

Moleskin:

Thanks everyone for coming out today. I always enjoy Q’ing. I was especially excited today to try this Trail O Tears workout with Folsom. It was tough Saturday and it pushed Painlab so while I wanted to wear you guys out, I mostly wanted to bring a workout that would push us all. I think I did both. It fires me up to see a big group out there and I’m really excited about Folsom right now. Also, props to AT for getting out there, but mostly for playing it smart today and modifying as needed! We joke around all the time but that is not always an easy thing to do.

Trail O Tears 3 – Painlab Edition

I had a FNG committ to joining Painlab today so I planned to meet him there.
Seeing that HIPAA had an open Q slot, I volunteered. Painlab is a good change of pace amid P200 training as well as a step out of my comfort zone. I talked Ratchet into joining me as well to get him a flavor of other AOs.

As I built a weinke. I thought about the actions this week of 2 turds named Medicine Woman and Sparky who stole Allen Tate’s “Chief” title and named an FNG with it. It was time for a return of Trail O Tears, a Chief (Allen Tate) inspired workout with plenty of lunge walking. I scooped up some coupons from Sparky last night and roll into the parking lot about 6:45am to get setup. I throw some Waylon and Hank 3 on the boombox for pre-workout music (playlist pics below)

7:00 comes and my FNG is a no-show!
Dang! Whoopee proceeds to put down a hell of a warmup that resulted in 30 (edited) burpees amd 15 Side Straddle Hops! Geeez Whoopee! Already winded, 11 men head over to.the lab for the thang. Wait, what is that I see? A white Dodge. Oh snap, THE Chief Allen Tate pulls in. My spirit animal is here for Trail O Tears. This is gonna be good! Correction – we now have 12 for Painlab.

Thang:

Trail O Tears:

Route 66 down the middle of the parking lot – lunge walk to each parking lot line. 1st line – 1 Mike Tyson, 2nd line – 2 Mike Tysons, 3rd line – 3 Mike Tysons…finish at 11 Mike Tysons.

Route 66 in the lower parking lot row – Bear Crawl to 1st line and 1 Air Squat, 2nd line – 2 squats, etc ending at 11.

Grab a block. I adjust the music to the hard rock portion cause we are turning it up another notch!

Cross the parking lot and do 10 curls and 10 overhead presses at each line. We did about 10 or 11 lines (I lost count)

Back to where we came from on the lower parking lot, do 10 cinder block swings (like kettlebell swings) at each line. I called it around 8 lines.

Put the blocks up, the tears have been shed. It is time for Core with Montross (a name also borrowed from AT).

3 circuits of:
15 LBCs in cadence
15 Rosalitas in cadence
10 Big Boys OYO

2 circuits of:
15 Flutter Kicks in cadence
10 Reverse American Hammers in cadence (we did American Hammers the 2nd time)
10 X-crunches single count

Tubthumping! AT brought it to Folsom a few weeks ago so I brought it today.
This was BRUTAL! Side Straddle Hops through the song a do a burpee everytime they say “I get knocked down”. They say it A LOT!

One more circuit of abs as I pull myself together!
15 LBCs in cadence
15 Rosalitas in cadence
10 Big Boys OYO

I decide to alter the weinke and go to a round of Mary. We did:
Cross-leg LBCs
Box Cutters
Morrocan Night Clubs
10 Burpees (called by THE Chief himself)
Imperial Walkers (Ratchet can NOT count LOL)
Side Straddle Hops
Freddie Mercuries
5 Star-jump Burpees
There were a few more as all 11 men (other than me) called an exercise, but I can’t remember them all. Great job by all!

Time was up, Thanks guys for each of you carrying a block to the Yukon for me! Some even lunge walked! We rejoined Whoopee and the Gashouse guys for the CoT.

Moleskin:

I love my Folsom brothers and there is no place like it IMO. However, I do like to get out and see other AOs from time to time. Many of you guys make the extra effort to Q at Folsom when I ask and step out of your comfort zone so I intend to do the same and Q every site in F3 Gastonia this year. The Storm, Hollywood, and Goat will be tough for me and my schedule, but I will find the opportunities and make it work.

Thanks to all the guys who came out today and especially Ratchet and CHIEF Allen Tate for making their way south of 85 with me. Q juice was flowing today. I was gassed a few times but pulled it together with your support to get it done. I gave Painlab about all I had today. I saw lots of modifying out there and that is ok..that means I pushed you to your limits too. I am not the fastest or strongest, but I will always show up prepared and give you my best. Looking forward to next time.

Montross – Assistant Chief Rockpusher of Folsom

Rotters, Kotters, and Late Folk

I noticed last week there was an open spot on the Folsom calendar. Though I helped with a Q-school a few weeks ago and also did a co-Q with Hacksaw, I haven’t really had the opportunity to bring a normal Montross Q in a while. After calling out the Kotters (particularly, the Rotter (Roadie the Kotter), and Medicine Woman (he claims to have posted last week but I dunno)… it was up to me to deliver the Jayvee-level workout I had promised. As usual, I planned to borrow from some other Qs who have graced Folsom with their presence over the past few months.

Warmarama:

SSH – 15 IC
Toy Soldiers – 10 IC
Mountain Climbers – 10 IC
Grass Pickers – 10 IC

Let’s Mosey! We pause at the first light pole to let a few late arrivers get a quick stretch and knock out 5 burpees. Resume mosey as we run to the flag at the park entrance, Sparky passes by us as he is doing Sparky thangs.

As we wait for Sparky to catch up at the flag, we do:
LBCs – 20 IC
Rosalitas – 15 IC

Pledge and mosey back to the tennis courts.

I told the guys about an article from USA Today that I had seen on Twitter. It said in a study, men who could do 40 pushups in a minute were 95% less likely to develop cardiovascular disease. That led me to checking out the Army PT test for pushups and I explained the Army standard for pushups….keep your butt down (Leppard!!!) and you lower your body until your arms are parallel to the ground. Lets practice. 1 minute, AMRAP. I am not great at pushups and I lost count about 45, but I ended up in the low 50s.

V’s – partial Q fail here but we went with it – Run from the corner of the tennis court to the center of the net, Nur to the far corner, 2 burpees, repeat for each tennis court. Rinse and repeat to return to the tennis court entrance. Props to the Rotter, he was pushing hard here despite the fact he isn’t in peak condition right now. MW finished at the front of the pack as well after being out a lot recently due to flu (and Sandy V?). Seriously though, nice job guys!

Marine 16 – I was running a little behind so we had to cut it short. The Marine 16 is a hero workout that Sister Act called a few months ago, designed to honor 15 Marines killed in a helicopter crash in 2017. It is an AMRAP exercise in 2 minute intervals.

  • Sprint (or run) to the end of the 2nd tennis court, 16 burpees, run back to start. Repeat AMRAP for 2 minutes.

  • Sprint (or run) to the end of the 2nd tennis court, 16 Merkins, run back to start. Repeat AMRAP for 2 minutes

  • Sprint (or run) to the end of the 2nd tennis court, 16 Squats, run back to start. Repeat AMRAP for 2 minutes

  • Sprint (or run) to the end of the 2nd tennis court, 16 Tuck Jumps, run back to start. Repeat AMRAP for 2 minutes

  • Sprint (or run) to the end of the 2nd tennis court, 16 Side Straddle Hops, run back to start. Repeat AMRAP for 2 minutes

Time!

Announcements and CoT:

CSAUP at 4 am on 2/23, 2nd F at Buffalo Wild Wings at 4 PM on 2/23. Storm shirts are on pre-order (HIPAA, everyone asked about and wants that Folsom shirt brother!!!!!!!). Prayers for MW and his family, Ratchet’s M, Allen Tate’s M and 2.0, Pizza Man’s M, Big Pappy and family (his father passed away last night), and each other. YHC took us out in prayer.

Moleskin:

It felt good to have the Q this morning and see some old faces making a return. I know Roadie has been out of town working and had some things he is dealing with, but I love seeing him back out there today. We call ya Rotter because we love ya! I missed a few days last week so I hadn’t seen Hank or Medicine Woman for what seems like a month. It was like a little reunion out there.

We cut up, we tease, we can get irritated from time to time, but it all comes together when we are in the CoT and Sparky mentioned Big Pappy’s dad, who had not been doing well…at that point, we didn’t yet know for sure, but we had a feeling things had turned for the worse and that’s probably why Pappy wasn’t with us today. Hearts got heavy, the PAX got a little more serious.

Big Pappy is one of our newer guys too. He’s sorta quiet but he gets out there working almost every day…he got involved because his son Pearl Jam did (through WC Friday Wrestling and Hacksaw). Now he brings all 3 sons with him. His improvements each week motivate us all and though we’ve only known him about 2 months, he is one of us now. It doesn’t take long to get close to guys around F3 Gastonia and particularly at Folsom!

All the prayer requests are important, but say an extra prayer for Pappy’s family today as well as Pizza Man’s M!

Pre-Valentines Day Prison Break

Prison Break was the place to be this morning. Unfortunately, many of you slackers didn’t get the memo. Kotters like Medicine Woman, Roadie, Ratchet, Rockabilly, etc were nowhere to be found. However, the running continues! All 7 HIM ram today. Shoutout to Roundup putting in 12 miles this morning. 12 miles on a Wednesday.
That dude gets it done. Don’t believe me, you should have come to his Q with Hacksaw Saturday (it was incredible). Bedpan hit the route early as he prepares for the P200, but he was gone before YHC returned, so I assume he got about 3 miles in. Barrel Racer put in some miles as well as Broke. Sparky put in about 3 miles after arriving fashionably late, as usual. Montross and Allen Tate did #ChiefThangs and got in some P200 training.

Prayer requests: Gumby’s family, Pizza Wife, Slaw’s foot, Ratchet’s wife, guys dealing with personal issues. YHC took us out in prayer.

Q-ing 101 with Professor Montross and Dr. Huckleberry

Warning: This post is pretty lengthy and it may be hard to find all the exercises. As I put the backblast together, I decided this I’d add in a lot of discussion and notes from my weinke to serve not only as a backblast, but also a little source material for those getting ready to Q at other AOs.

Through December and January, we have several new guys who have quickly become regulars. These guys are pushing the rock nearly every day and it’s motivating to see. With all the new faces, there’s also new opportunities. When reading about the Leadership Development Process in Q source 2 weeks ago, I started thinking about finding a day to do some “Q School” for the new guys. I asked Huck to join me in as a co-Q today not only to have a second voice who may add things I forgot to say, but also to encourage guys to get a co-Q the first time they lead a workout. I used this page as a guide for this workout: https://f3nation.com/a-guide-to-your-first-q/

Other notes: Sparky got there late and Allen Tate fartsacked.

    Warmup:

Disclaimer – each Q should be familiar with this. There is a copy for you to read and learn on the f3nation website. It’s good habit to give the disclaimer at each workout, but particularly important when there is a FNG. So, ‘I am not a professtional. These are suggestions, it’s you vs you, modify as needed. You should see a doctor if you have concerns about doing this type of activity’ (thanks Huck for not letting me forget the first item on the agenda!)

SSH – 15 IC
Toy Soldiers – 15 IC

Before we get moving too far, we need to discuss the 5 Core Principles of F3 – 1) All F3 workouts are free of charge 2) They are open to all men 3) Held outdoors, rain or shine, hot or cold 4) Led by men in a rotating fashion without any certifications or training necessary 5) End in a Circle of Trust

Plank and Nolan Ryans (right arm up, left arm up). This is a great opportunity to talk about warm-ups. For all the PAX, this gets the blood flowing, gets the body moving, and gets the muscles loose. Muscles can be like taffy, the warmer they get, the smoother things work. This sets a tone for the workout.

5 Burpees OYO 🙂

    Thang:

YHC took the first portion of the workout. Let’s mosey, right out of the parking lot, up the hill to the 2nd light pole. Sparky leads a round of Mountain Climbers IC while YHC picks up the 6.

Pearls on a string – as you put pearls on a string and pull them together, they can be a become a beautiful necklace. As you let the string go, the pearls become separated and eventually can fall off the string, scattering in many directions. As the Q, it is your responsibility to help keep the pearls (PAX) on the string. You can accomplish this in several ways – 1) Pick up the 6…whether it is the Q, Site Q, or one of the PAX, someone needs to go pick up the ‘late arrivers’. 2) You can break up runs with intermittent exercises designed to keep front-runners active and working, but allowing others to catch up. 3) If you are going on a long run and you know there is a guy or two in the group that can’t make that run due to injury or otherwise, you could consider planning an alternate route and giving them a heads up before the workout ( i.e. – when we mosey from the parking lot, we’re going to end up at the picnic shelter. You can join us or take this alternate route instead). I’d also suggest getting someone to join them…we don’t want to leave that guy alone but I’ve also been the guy battling injury who didn’t want to slow everyone down.

That being said we took a long mosey around the park, behind the pond, and to the lower shelter. Huck took a few guys on an alternate route that was a little shorter. Hank reminded me it is skunk mating season. I could smell them as we rounded the pond, but none were spotted. Be careful out there fellas!

We meet up on the shelter for some circuit exercises and a guide to counting. We count In Cadence to help create rhythm, which can distract the mind from the task at hand. It also builds teamwork by synchronizing PAX and creating focus. Finally, not knowing the number or reps that are coming discourages budgeting effort. (I will often say how many reps I plan to do before starting an ‘In Cadence’ exercise, I’m working on it.)

I’ve heard several variations (including my own variation) of how to call an exercise, but here is the proper sequence according to f3nation.com

“The next exercise is…” [pause] “Side Straddle Hop!” (or name of other exercise)
“Starting Position…” [pause] “Move!”
“In Cadence…” [pause] “Exercise!” (begin count 1..2..3)

Now let’s practice.
Plank Jacks – 15 IC
Dips – 15 IC
Flutter Kicks – 15 IC
Mike Tysons – 15 IC

Rinse and repeat, but we threw in some silent cadence for good measure.

One more – sometimes the exercise lends itself to single count or other variations.

X-crunches (courtesy of Short Sale) – 10 reps. Huck asks for a “Demo”. Perfect, I had this on the list and hoped someone would ask! Always be willing to demo the exercise, particularly for new people or for new/rarely use exercises. Here’s the demo – start out on your back with the small of your back touching concrete, hands and feet touching each other directly above your body, extend your lets and arms out in to an X (keep ’em off the ground), back in. That’s one. Out-In-1, Out-In-2, Out-In-3…..10 reps, now I hand the reigns over to Huck.

Two more Q tips – the shelters are great workout locations when it’s raining and cold. No one wants to lay in puddles of water all morning. Also, Q to your strengths. Some guys are better ar running, some guys enjoy core work, and jayvee Midoriayama guys do it all! The great thing about this is it can bring great variety to the workouts.

Huck and I both offered some advice on having a ‘backpocket’ exercise…always have something you feel comfortable going to when things aren’t working out. It is going to happen…maybe it’s too muddy and wet, maybe cars are in the way, maybe it was just too hard to explain. For Huck, it’s 4 Corners or Dora 123.
For Montross, it’s 11’s or Triple Nickel. You do you. The key here is something that most PAX will know how to do and doesn’t require any special equipment to do.

Huck begins to explain the next exercise…nur 1/4 of the parking lot, karaokee 1/4, bear crawl 1/4, lunge 1/4. Then lunge walk to the speed bump (a long way!), then run back to the parking lot. Plank for the 6.

We didn’t really speak to this very much, but part of the idea here was to call something that could work us all, but also the exercise itself helps us makes our way back to the parking lot by the tennis courts. However it’s a ‘slow mover’ where everyone can stay together.

As we return to the parking lot, Huck has Montross do a 10 count. Montross struggles to follow directions, but figures it out eventually! Huck’s point here – sometimes you’re a little gassed, sometimes the PAX need a quick break…call on a fellow PAX for a 10 count…just have them count to 10 (at their desired pace) to give everyone a chance to catch their breath. Another option is a ‘Count Off’ where you have each pack count themselves. That probably works better early in a workout when you’re trying to confirm how many you have in the workout, but can also be a breath-catcher.

Practice makes perfect so Huck calls on the newer guys to lead some exercises. We tried to drive home the “proper sequence” above (Next exerciese is….starting position, move, in cadence, exercise), but to Sparky’s point, that doesn’t always have to be perfect. I have seen several different versions and they all work to me….but have a rhythm to what you do.

Rockabilly, Blue, Big Pappy, and Ratchet all called an exercise in cadence and led us.

Huck took us out with 22 for the Vets and talked about the importance of a backblast. That is how we know who made it and who we are missing. It doesn’t have to be a literary masterpiece. It really just needs to list what happened, who was there, and when it happened. Adding some story to it is nice but “get it done” is the main thing.

Sparky shared a little wisdom as well. Some guys will bring a theme to a workout, share personal info, possibly some wisdom along the way, or even scripture. Def Leppard is one who does this, whether it’s having a few scriptures to speak on or leading his “Be Thankful” workout just before Thanksgiving…you can use it as an opportunity to pour into others and develop relationships. I would personally say that probably isn’t something to try to do on your first Q, but I agree with Sparky whole-heartedly!

As a closing note…and this was mentioned throughout the workout today… it doesn’t have to be perfect. You will mess up, an exercise won’t go as planned, something will happen. Own it, move on, ask for another PAX to assist if needed, and keep getting better.

Huck finished with a few notes about Circle of Trust – This is a time for announcements, requests, etc. We typically end in prayer though that is not a F3 “requirement.” F3 is not a specifically associated with a particular religion. However, that being said, most of our PAX are Christian. If you don’t feel comfortable praying in front of others, ask someone to step in for you. I know that can be intimidating for many….it’s ok, there will be someone willing to step in. (PAX, if someone asks for someone to pray the group out, step up!).

    Circle of Trust

CSAUP coming February 23, sign up (Sparky!), 2nd F event to follow (details to come), Rooster, be thinking about BRR Ruck.

Prayer request: Hush Puppy, Shad Rap, Medicine Woman, and all the pax struggling with health or other issues. Be there to support a brother! YHC took us out in prayer.

    Moleskin

I remember what it was like when Sparky first asked me to Q. I was NERVOUS! I didn’t want to do it! I didn’t think I was ready. However, he persisted and he paired me up with Slaw for my VQ and I couldn’t thank him more. Slaw helped me prepare, gave me good advice, and we executed one heck of a beatdown! I try to do the same as guys get lined up for their first Q to pay it forward. With that being said, it was an honor to lead this group today and prep several guys.

Sparky mentioned bringing a little something deeper to grow men during your workouts. I’ve personally pushed myself to try to offer some ‘wisdom’ during workouts and including some scripture into workouts…I don’t feel like I’m “good” at it yet like Leppard and some others, but I’m working on it and that’s what we’re all doing here.
