Is it raining?

This morning was a good reminder that we missed spring with the rain and humidity I knew today would be moisty. I just heard that word for the first time in a morning meeting. My Man Volt upped his game with a weighted vest this morning, then Pastor Clever had to park at the top of Folsom and join in with us at the pledge. I believe Sparky must had told him the time was 535 not 530 but either way he is a fast runner and caught up quickly.
Before that we did start at 530 after a good discussion on insurance companies to choose and always provide good service to the people you are working for not the guy who left the scene(soapbox needed)with that if you read this and sale insurance you might want to bring some business cards if you post at Folsom.
Let’s get started
Ssh x15
Hillbillies x15
Imperial walkers x15
Burpees x5
Squats x15
Let’s mosey to the flag for the pledge, who’s that ms Parker looks like Pastor Clever coming in hot .
Lbcs x20
Mountain climbers x20
Shoulder presses x20
Let’s mosey some more in this wonderful misty rain and humidity so thick we had to chop through it. I didn’t know I could sweat this much.
Bottom shelter
Dips x20
Derkins x 10
Dips x 20
Step up x 25
Time for some team work
One guy takes a lap while the other does the exercise
Lbcs x 150
WWII x 50
Squats x 100
Mosey up to the tennis courts for some lunges and burpees
Lunge one court 2 burpees then lunge another adding two burpees per line. Then sprint back to the end. Finished with 22merkins for the vets.
Moleskin:
This is my 3rd Q so far I was wondering if I would fall face first following Apache’s Q Tuesday. Close to the end of the morning I went back to get the 6 and Volt yelled out just start without me and I thought well I could but that ain’t F3 and it definitely ain’t me. I laughed and ran back stayed close didn’t say much cause Volt speaks more in actions than words. But it did remind me of what Apache said we are all the 6. FYI Volt did chuckle when I came back and said I know string of pearls man. Just a great reminder in F3 if you are in the front or back someone is always by your side.

Tool Time

“No boot camp this AM?”

With all the rain and storms in the forecast, YHC wasn’t exactly optimistic about the turn out for the third week of Prison Break at Folsom. As you know, the PAX at Folsom have opened up Wednesday mornings for a Run/Ruck WO. This morning was a lighter crowd, but some are healing from injuries. Good to see Sargento roll in with 2.0, Queso. He was ready to roll with gloves in hand. I comment that he didn’t need his gloves today. Sargento says “what? What do you mean?” Apparently he had missed the memo that Wednesday’s has been declared Run/Ruck. Slightly disappointed there wasn’t gonna be a beatdown WO, he was up for a cool mosey. Clock in at 5:33.

6 men ran and 2 men rucked. Sparky and Clever were setting the pace while YHC just tried to breathe. Sargento hung back to chat with me while pushing myself and Queso to the next level. Hank and Roadie set out from start on a record pace with 30 pounds on their backs. The Rucker’s posted about 2.5 miles at 15:13 pace I believe! Nice work. I held back Sargento along with Queso for 3.4 miles. I’m sure sparky and Clever posted a bit more.  We did learn that Sargento was actually 54? Who knew? #Respect

Announcements: Warrior dash June 2.

Prayer requests: ourselves, our families. Wisdom from Sparky to love our wives, pray over them daily, lead them as Christ teaches us to.

Sparky took us out in prayer.

I just want to say, this F3 thing is the real deal! These men are real men! The fellowship within this group is real. I can, without a doubt, say that these men will have your back no matter what. I’m blessed to be a part of it and look forward to what’s to come. Keep pushing the rock men and thank you for pushing me.

Sunday Socks on a Monday Morning

I’m sure most of us have always had a sock drawer and depending on the time period you were growing up you had tube socks with stripes that pulled all the way up to your knees before giving way to the mid-calves and then the low cuts.  In my drawer, there were always a few blue or black pair that were the “Sunday socks.” to be worn with clothes our moms bought and we wore to church or dress up occasions. Now as an adult and wearing my Sunday attire nearly 5 days a week for work, I seem to wear my Sunday socks on a daily basis. In the early morning hours of my darkened bedroom, I grabbed my dark work socks to wear to the workout. I didn’t notice until I was in the garage searching for my shoes but there was no time to correct the mistake. Now I don’t have a “sock game” like Island (check out his Batman socks) and I’m not a millennial that buys pants a size too tight and 2 inches short to show of brightly colored socks that cost as much as case of beer. But none of the PAX called me out on it so I survived. But you didn’t pull open this backblast to read about socks. You want to know about the workout.

I grabbed the Q from Gastone as I had a few new things to try, at least they were new to me and something not performed at the Dark Snoball or the Black Snow or whatever our old Martha’s House playground is now called. The circle formed and Roadie was the lone representative from Folsom on this occasion. My man is making the rounds and putting in a lot of work which the results are noticeable. Don’t be surprised if he is standing beside you one morning. 0530 hit and we had an FNG among us. Jeff Martin was EH’ed by Defib. A former soccer player at Belmont Abbey (he’s younger than you Boudin) and police officer in Belmont. I knew what was planned and briefly considered a revision. I decided I would add a bit to the disclaimer instead – “you verses you, stop if you get dizzy, it’s okay to merlot, blah, blah, blah.” It was a good thing we had an experienced and trained medical professional among us – no, not the guy that won most beautiful cardiologist in Gastonia – he didn’t show – probably “heart-sacking with his M. No the Doc that posted is the one that can knock out nearly 100 push-ups in a minute; the one that craps his pants on mile 20 because he’s ahead of a PR at Big Sur; yeah – that one. We said the pledge and then I decided an extended warm-up was needed. It went like this:

  • 5 Burpees OYO
  • SSH – IC x 10
  • Squats – IC x 10
  • Imperial Walker – IC x 10

Mosey to the old Harris Teeter. I got to spend some time Saturday with Slaw during the workout at Folsom. A month or so ago he hit those boys with an insane routine of his favorite exercise – yes you guessed it – the burpee. He had an hour to expend and I was limited in our 45 minutes. I decided to modify a bit. So once arriving in the parking lot I shared with the PAX the four corners that would be employed: approximately 30 yards apart, nearly a square shape. At corner #1, we’d begin with 16 burpees. Run to corner #2, decrease by one to 15; Corner #3 – 14 burpees and then Corner #4 – 13 burpees. We made it two rounds before I called Omaha. Partly because the PAX had these dumbfounded looks on their face and Roadie asked to be placed on the prayer list. Plus I had other stuff to do. I thought maybe we’d come back to it if we had time. This was a tough one for sure and designed to keep the mumble chatter at a minimum which it certainly did. The problem was JK2, Whoopee, or Turtleman didn’t post. So it was eerily quite, almost too quiet except for the idiot in his car yelling “run harder!” I never said our hometown was full of the world’s brightest bulbs. The pre-tweet promised 100 burpees and we eclipsed that mark so one mission was accomplished.

Phase II of the workout was a new routine with partners. Partner 1 would get in plank and perform shoulder taps at corners 1 and 3. Partner 2 would face the opposite direction in a plank and perform 10 side hops over his partner’s extended legs. If you can’t visualize it, hopefully you’ll post the next time I Q and you can perform it yourself. At corners 2 and 4 the partners flipped positions with Partner 1 doing side to side hops and Partner 2 shoulder tapping. We went 3 rounds. The partner doing the shoulder taps did AMRAP while the one side hopping 10 times was the count.

To the long wall for something I read about in Spiderman’s backblast: the dirty hook-up. We did 10 of those in cadence against the wall, then turned around for 10 Donkey kicks in cadence before finishing with 10 hip slappers.

We formed a circle for the next routine. Stroganoff likes to name his routines so I came up with Diamonds are Forever. I don’t know about you but diamond merkins can suck, actually they suck a lot. But you gotta do some things you don’t like to get better. So we began with 10 diamond merkins. Not so bad, now for the hard part. Low diamond holds. Put your hands in position and lower down where your forearms are about an inch off the ground and your bicep almost folds on top of your forearm – hold that position for 25 seconds. All was quiet until about 10 seconds in and the moaning began and lasted until time was called. Nice work by the PAX. A brief rest before the last segment: diamond pulses. Same principal applies – lower down and then pulse your arms up and down to increase the burn for another 25 seconds.

We had a little bit of time so let’s get some Mary in while were here.

  • Flutter kicks IC x 20
  • Leg lifts SC x 20
  • American Hammer IC x 20
  • X Crunch SC x 20

We headed back to the AO for the standard close. Prayers were lifted for Roadie’s niece worried about end of grade tests and his brother whom he is trying to EH off the sad clown couch. Announcements: Folsom this Saturday is having a 2.0 friendly workout, something they plan to do monthly over the summer. HIPPA will take the Pain Lab on the road to be there as well. Start time will be 0700 instead of their normal time – make a note if you plan to attend.  Look for the newsletter with information about 2nd F coming up next week at the White Water Center’s River Jam. In June Freight will host a 3rd F event on a Friday evening – date to be confirmed.

Moleskin: For his first day out, Jeff Martin pushed himself pretty good. With his soccer and police background we named him “Shooter.” This was a hard workout for all fitness levels. Burpees are a full body exercise that exert about every muscle. But to think we did over 100 – that was strong work that elevated our heart rates and started the calorie burn. I’ll bring that one back out and hopefully we can get through the four rounds. The guys all worked hard and we all got better. Thanks to Gastone and Squirt for grabbling the six. I enjoyed the opportunity to lead the workout. Until the next one.

the most fun you can have while being miserable

14 other joined YHC for my first Q at Midoriyama in quite some time.   Everyone showed ready to run, because you all know YHC loves to run.  I planned at getting at least a 1k in today.  Blart posted twice today just because he knew we’d be running.

Once 1730 hit it was time to clock in.

Warmups: 8ct body builders, merkins, side straddle hops and lbcs.

Mosey.

Stop for deconstructed burpees.  This was a crowd pleaser. Start at 10 and worked out way down to 1.

Mosey down to Hamburger Hill.  Half way there YHC was thinking how I thought this hill was much closer.  Oh well.

Partner up.  P1 crawls bear down the hill and bear crawls back up.  P2 does merkins.  Switch. After one round it was agreed this was stupid.  No one at the city has bothered cutting this hill since 2016.

Lunge walk, Nur and mosey back to the parking lot closest to the hill.  We started to do deconstructed burpees again but it didn’t seem to be a crowd pleaser.

All you got run to a desired location.  Stop for merkins I think.

All you got run. Stop for 22 for the Vets.

Lunge, Nur and Mosey to the turd shack.

Partner up again.  P1 does Australian mountain climbers while P2 does 50 lbcs.  Repeat changing lbcs for merkins.  Repeat again changing merkins for squats.

Circle up at the launching point for Mary.  merkins, boat to canoe and some sort of weird merkin hipaa picked.

Terrible Tabata

When YHC was planning for The Storm Q all he could think about was his last Q at The Storm.  I think people felt it was a bit soft, so what is not soft Burpees.  As the PAX started to show up I knew that Apache had the Q at Folsom, so I thought the numbers may be light.  I was wrong the PAX had a strong showing, 14 in all.  There was a little mumblechatter before we got started.  Mayor was upset that someone called him a bully the night before. That may or not have been YHC.  I was just concerned that he had run Dolph off because I had not seen him a while.  Clock struck 5:30 am time to get started.

Warm up

SSH 25 IC

Merkins 15 IC

Squats 15 IC   Evidently this is a very funny exercise to Dolph because he could not stop laughing.  I think it may have been my counting.

Burpees 5 OYO

Pledge

The Thang

Mosey around the practice field until we reached the school.  Once there 6 rounds of the following exercise as fast as you can with a mosey around the practice field after round  2, 4, and 6.

10 Pushups

10 Squats

10 Burpees

10 Squats

The mumble chatter was at a minimum, so I know that PAX were giving it the old “Maximum Effort”.  At one point, one PAX  though he heard me call an Omaha on the burpees from across the field.  Wishful thinking.  Lets continue as prescribed.

Mosey to the tennis courts for some Tabata.  20 seconds on and 10 seconds off of the following excercises

Squat jump

Merkin

Burpees

LBC

Squat jump

Merkin

Burpees

LBC

We completed the first round then mosey around the tennis court back to the starting point.  You guessed it, another 4 minutes of getting stronger then another mosey.  Stopped with 2 tennis courts left bear crawl back to the starting point on the tennis courts.

With about 5 minutes to spare we mosey to the starting point to circle up for some Mary.

Slow Squats, Flutter, Heal Touches, Oblique Crunches,Freddie Mercuries, French Fry, Monkey Humpers

Time

Annoucements: 2.0 friendly workout at Folsom on Saturday, Mayor mentioned the event for veterans flying to DC.  PAX can sign up with family to be at airport when they return home.  Dolph encouraged the PAX to Q workouts.

Pray Request: Lynn Hamm, Seniors getting ready to graduate high school, and all of the unspoken prayer request.

Great work today men.  Keep getting up and pushing the rock.   I encourage everyone to volunteer to Q a workout.  Maybe we can fill up June and July schedules if they are not full.  After posting this BB, I will be contacting Dolph and Mayor to get back on the schedule.  I encourage the PAX to at least reach out to at least one or the other if not both to put your name on the Q list.  If another AO works better reach out to that site Q.  Thank you for the opportunity to lead.

See you in the gloom.

Passing of the torch

Passing of the Torch

Looking back through Back Blasts I had seen the 1st Pain Lab was done on Saturday May 16th, 2017. After one year of a very successful campaign, Rudolph felt it was time to pass the torch. Rudolph and YHC seemed to have shared the same vision about Pain Lab since the first time I had attended. Given that, he had asked me if I would like to take over this wonderful AO and at the 1-year mark. YHC humbly and gratefully accepted his request. Rudolph, you have introduced a wonderful experience for all to enjoy and cannot thank you enough for the push to keep this going. I only hope I can be as successful as you have been during this time. I promise not to let you down and to keep this alive for years to come.

Here is an excerpt from the 1st  Pain Lab BB: “PAINLAB – you are here because your body hates you after high-impact work, or you are recovering from injury.  Either way, you will get a workout!  High-impact is when both feet leave the ground.  We don’t do that.  We bust @$$ keeping 1 or 2 legs on the ground.  It works!”  I’d like to think that this is the official Mission Statement for Pain Lab and I will keep that promise. All are welcome to join in the pain, but the ones on IR are the ones we definitely want to target. Why? Because this keeps those men involved, possibly rehabilitate faster, keeps their spirits high, and allows them to keep pushing the rock. Prime example here is Clavin. As many of you know, Clavin is fresh off knee surgery. He loves F3 and doesn’t want this injury to put him in that dark place. Clavin was out in full force Saturday, couldn’t even tell that man was on the IR!!!

While Pain Lab’s main home is Gashouse on Saturday’s, it will not be stationary. Once a month we will take Pain Lab on the road, delivering pain at Folsom, The Yank and regions beyond. YHC has been building up his private collection of weights and other goodies, and wants to share them with all. We have Kettlebells, Battle Ropes, Slam balls, dumb bells and Picnic Tables?? (Keep reading J). If anyone wants to Q the Pain Lab and wishes to borrow this equipment for your workout, you are more than welcome to at any time. No security deposit required!

That said, let’s show you how we incorporate these items into a Pain Lab workout!!

The Thang:

Tabata/HIIT Style

30 second AMRAP: 10 second rest (Yes Mayor, it was 10 second rest) x 3 Sets each Round. Switch stations after 3 sets have been completed. Rinse & Repeat until all rounds at each station had been completed.

Stations: 6 HIM = 6 Stations:

Station 1 – Battle Rope (50ft 2” Battle Rope):

Round 1: 3 Sets – Double Arm Waves

Round 2: 3 Sets – Battle Rope Burpee (New Burpee!!)

Round 3: 3 Sets – Single Arm Waves

Station 2 – Slam Ball (20Lbs):

Round 1: 3 Sets – Overhead Slams

Round 2: 3 Sets – American Hammers with Slam Ball

Round 3: 3 Sets – Overhead Slams to Sprawl

Station 3 – Kettlebell (All sizes for all levels):

Round 1: 3 Sets – Plank Rows

Round 2: 3 Sets – Swings

Round 3: 3 Sets – Snatch

Station 4 – Body Weight:

Round 1 – 3 Sets – LBC’s

Round 2 – 3 Sets – Pseudo Planche Merkin

Round 3 – 3 Sets – Hand Release Burpees (New Burpee!!)

Station 5 – Ruck Sack (30Lbs):

Round 1 – 3 Sets – Bent Over Rows

Round 2 – 3 Sets – Shoulder Press

Round 3 – 3 Sets – Lying Chest Press

Station 6 – Picnic Tables

Round 1 – 3 Sets – Bench Dips

Round 2 – 3 Sets – Bench Derkins

Round 3 – 3 Sets – Picnic Table Presses

In the time allotted, we were able to finish all 6 stations except for 1 round at the last station before Madoff came back with his group. (Example: The only exercise I wasn’t able to get to do was Overhead Slams to Sprawl)

As you can see, Pain Lab is NOT to be taken lightly. There was not much mumblechatter from the group, well except Mayor constantly complaining about the alleged “10” second rest period. You should be lucky I even gave you one! Overall, I think everyone was so concentrated on busting out AMRAP, there wasn’t much time to talk. YHC totally forgot he had a fully charged GoPro in his car; I would’ve liked to have recorded the session. We will do this in the future for a promo video! Blart, I dont think you had any idea what you were getting yourself into today. Glad you stayed for the pain and hope you return to join us again, it looked like you enjoyed it!

COT

Welcome back cotter, Warden! Warden hit up the F3 FB page Friday evening wanting to know if we still did Pain Lab on Saturday mornings. The reply was yes and reminded YHC to put up an AO schedule on FB. I was glad to see Gashouse have a large gathering of HIM today! Welcome 2.0 FNG Dijon! I know your Dad is proud of you!!

Announcements: Memorial day 5K (Speed For Need), Convergence, Murph all on 5/28. We need PAX to step up and fill open Q’s. Visit our Events page to check over the “Q Schedule for Gastonia, Folsom & Midoriyama:” calendar, it’s there for a reason!

Prayer requests for family, friends & fellow PAX in need of healing and mercy. Madoff took us out in prayer.

Men, as always it is an honor and privilege to lead a group of HIM. I encourage you to keep posting, do not let yourself fall into that dark hole. We are all here for each other, reach out to someone if you need help!

KEEP PUSHING THE ROCK, AYE!!!!

The Triumphant Return of Team Timberlake

I spent the end of the week teasing my workout about how it would be an epic beatdown. Gumby brought it on Thursday so I felt the bar was already set high. The workout plan had been finalized since Wednesday so I knew the madness that was coming their way.

In addition, there is an ongoing dispute in Folsom regarding contact in a recent Frisbee Rules Football game. Sister Act says Roadie’s hit was intentional. Both are arguing about the degree of injury vs the level of Sandy V. Sister Act called Roadie ‘SOFT’. Dang son, when talking to a HIM like Roaide, you are better off talking about his mom rather than calling him SOFT. Roadie has vowed to show ‘Essay’ he is most definitely not soft! Roadie got in some EC doing Sister Act lifts throughout the workout.

Back to the workout though – 17 HIM showed up at Folsom – Pizza Man and Tool Time departed for a run

Thang:

  • SSH 10 IC at a brisk pace.
  • Roadie does a Sister Act lift

I took a planned break to let the PAX know something seemed to be missing. It felt lonely out there by myself on a Saturday. I felt like I needed some teamwork and some support. Out of nowhere, 2 Team Timberlake shirts have appeared. It’s a Team Timberlake Q baby! JT music is playing in the background, all is right in the world at that moment, and the first words out of Slaw’s mouth are…

  • SLAW-TER STARTER!!!!!!!! 20 OYO

Whooooooo! Let’s mosey to the flag. BRUTAL! On our way to the flag, I notice Roadie is pushing the rock, running near the front. Solid work. He is making a statement to Sister Act!

  • Pledge, let’s mosey some more down around to the back side of the park.

  • Split into 2 groups (possibly not necessary, according to the PAX) 15 Merkins on one side, run down the hill and back up the other hill, 25 LBCs, run down and then up the other hill…repeat 5 times.

  • Mosey across the grass to the tennis courts. Freight moans about running in the grass and getting his shoes wet. That was a pretty common theme through the workout!

  • Burpee Dans! – line up against the fence, lunge-lunge-burpee, lunge-lunge-burpee, lunge-lunge-burpee all the way to the net. Then do the same back to the fence with 2 burpees, then back to the net with 3 burpees…..we offered the PAX a reprieve at about 6.

  • Mosey to the amphitheater. More whining from Freight about his shoes. At this point, I think he’s more upset about his hair being out of place.

  • Crazy Indian (modified). Frankly, we probably had too many PAX for the limited amount of wall space but I tweaked the plan…half on one side of the wall, half on the other. Assume Balls to the Wall position, the 2 outermost PAX run around the amphitheater, reassume the position, then the next 2 PAX run around the amphitheater. It was something of a mess but we got it done. On your 6 for some ab exercise.

  • 40 LBCs OYO

  • 20 Sandy Vs
  • 20 Freddie Mercuries

  • Hip Slappers 10 IC. Having a co-q did help here as Slaw counted one side of the wall, YHC counted the other.

  • Mosey – pause mid-run for 20 Flutter Kicks IC and allow the 6 to catch up. Back to the tennis courts.

Slaw shares some great words of wisdom, letting us know his daughter is turning 17 and reminding us all to spend good quality time with our families and kids because time flies by. He is 100% right!!! We all get distracted with life, work, our phones, hobbies (including F3), etc. Make sure you’re putting in that quality family time too because that fitness is just as important!

Then, Slaw gives the PAX an equivalent of a Stone Cold Stunner…

  • Burpee Dans – pick up where we left off. This goes on for about 8 minutes. Everyone was GASSED! Omaha!

We have a few minutes left so let’s get in a round of Mary
– Roadie gets in a few more Sister Act lifts
– LBCs
– American Hammers (Ash Pond, they say he can do them all day)
– Cork Screws (thanks Short Sale)
– 22 for the Vets (a train is heard in the background)
– 5 burpeees OYO

Time!

COT: There were several requests including Pockets. YHC took us out in prayer.

Moleskin: I had a regularly scheduled follow up this week with my oncologist and, good news, the doctor says everything is looking good. I wanted to share that and also a piece of the story while I was going through surgery and treatment in Jan/Feb 2017. My surgeon had found cancer when removing my appendix and recommended I have part of my colon removed. My cancer wasn’t very aggressive and prognosis was good, but I wasn’t sure….did I really need this surgery? Is it the best way? So, I made an appointment for a 2nd opinion with an Oncologist at Levine’s in Charlotte. He agreed I should remove part of my colon so I’m feeling better about this, but I’m still nervous. As I’m preparing for surgery, I go to get bloodwork done a few weeks later and the nurse told me how, in her job, she sees a lot of people in need and she uses her job to minister to others…she tells people about her faith in Jesus and offers to pray for people. We talked about church and I let her know I was a believer. Turn out, she had a similar surgery to mine a few years ago. She told me she felt we’d met that day for a reason and that it was the work of God. After my bloodwork, she prayed for me and I felt a calm come over my soul. I cried in the room because I was so relieved. I cried because I knew God was speaking to me. Frankly, that doesn’t just happen to me all the time, but I was looking, I was listening, and he was there when I needed it. So my advice to you all – look and listen for the great Sky Q to speak to you. He won’t answer every prayer, everything isn’t going to go perfectly to YOUR plan, but it will according to HIS!

Extraordinary People Running/Rucking

20 came out on Mother’s Day and conquered the day by starting it off the best possible way.

The Thang:

Some early for extra credit run.

Some early for Ruck.

The rest came at the start time of 6:30am to run 5 miles.

We started with a pledge at 6:30am.

The Moleskin:

As always it is a honor to have such a great group of guys and to Q any location. If you are not getting inspired from some of the accomplishments of some of your brothers out at these workouts you are not paying attention.

If you are reading this then take my next challenge. This Wednesday do something out of the ordinary and special for your wife. She expected this on Sunday but does not  expect the unexpected on a random day. Just because it’s Wednesday.

Lot’s of prayer request that I did not record all of them. But, please do pray for all your brother’s and family and friends.

Gastone Out!

P.S. Madoff, hope you are ok from the fall during extra credit run. Pretty bad when your shoe fly’s off. The dangers of uneven pavement are real.

Festival of Pain

YHC showed up to The Yank to find the streets blocked for the Garibaldi Festival. That would not stop the PAX from meeting at the normal spot.  YHC noticed a few PAX that he had not met yet.  Looks like F3 Gastonia had a good week for new brothers. Keep EHing new PAX.  It’s go time  7 am. Reviewed the 5 principals of F3 for FNG. The thang.
