Seven of the baddest dudes in the world posted to Folsom this am.   As 06:30 was approaching, we were graced with an FNG.  Corey (later named After Volt), said he was EH’d by EZ Rider.   As 06:30 struck, it was time to clock in.

Let’s mosey down to the lower parking lot.

Warmups: 10 SSH IC, 20 Merkins IC, 30 CDD IC, 40 Mountain Climbers IC and 50 lbc IC.   this brought out a decent amount of mumble chatter.

mosey around a little bit and end up at the amphitheater.  i’m sure the men were surprised.  11s with dips and hip slappers.  11s again with decline merkins and incline merkins.  5 burpees OYO and squats for a minute.

07:00 hits and the keys were handed to Allen Tate.

Mosey up the to road, stopping along the way to plank for the six.  By the road stopped for flutter kicks and the alphabet.  Come to find out Dolph was doing it in 400 font.  Slaw was at about 395 font, YHC was writing in 6 font.

pledge

mosey a bit and stop for monkey humpers and morrocan nightclubs.  mosey back down to the lower shelter where we were greeting by a couple looking like they wanted some alone time.  with an audience, we did dips and step-ups.

mosey back to the launching point, stopping to do 5 humpees.

22 for the vets.

Announcements: JJ5K is today.

Prayer requests: Allen Tate’s co-worker, this country.

Good work today, men.  it’s an honor just to know you guys.

Blueberry BOMBS

While planning the beatdown, I really struggled with this. Burpees or no burpees? That was the question. Burpeethon was the issue. After 3 seconds of hard thought: Burpees. Did they leave the other HIMs: a) with a good warmup for the Burpeethon, b) incapable of participating in the Burpeethon, c) wishing they had done the Burpeethon instead, d) all the above, e) none of the above, f) [fill in the blank] ?  You decide!

Warm Up: SSH, Merkins, Toy Soldiers, Cromwells, Monkey Humpers

Pain Lab dismissed. I have no idea what they did. They looked dry and relaxed when we emerged from the woods at 7:59. Draw your own conclusions.

THANG!

Modified Blueberry biscuit around parking lot ending at flag for pledge,

Mosey across street to library to lower lot for:

Blueberry BOMBS!! This is my own adaptation of a Whoopie favorite, blueberry biscuit, and an old standby, BOMBS. One partner runs around the parking lot and halfway around does 5 Burpees. Other partner continues the usual BOMBS exercises: 100 Overhead claps; 150 Merkins; 200 Big Boy Sit Ups; 250 Squats.

Then a short fellowship mosey to the upper parking lot for some Dominoes (too hard to explain; look it up).

Mosey across the street to the woods behind Shiele. Beginning at the bridge, alternating Boo Boo Bear Crawl & lunges to the lake.

Modified Blueberry DORA type exercise around lake: runner circles the lake, performing 3 burpees halfway around. Partner continues exercises:  50 Dying cockroaches, 75 Merkins, 100 Flutter kicks.

Fellowship mosey back to the mill for BLUEBERRY HILLS! Run up the hill to that tree, 3 burpees, run down, 3 burpees, repeat-O until 7:58. Fellowship mosey back to parking lot.

Announcements: Burpeethon now! Speed for Need Saturday after Thanksgiving–sign up or Tool Time will keep talking about it.

Prayer requests: Several seriously ill PAX family members/co-workers, all those we will benefit from the Burpeethon and Speed for Need.

It was terrific working out with Hushpuppy and a couple of HIMs I don’t know all that well.

Monk-out!

Biscuit delivery

22 PAX showed up on a perfect morning for a beatdown at the Gashouse.  At 0700 sharp a disclaimer was given which basically said we had no insurance and were idiots or something like that.  We had a quick warm up which consisted of SSH, Merkins, LBC’s, CDD’s (Def Leppard push-ups), and squats.  The Painlab PAX peeled off with Rudolph as the rest of the boot campers went with YHC to the flag for the pledge of allegiance.

Today the Painlab offered some kettlebell work and two groups.  One for the recovering PAX and one for the regulars who are accustomed to Kettlebell workouts.  F3 is a cafeteria.  Serve yourself!

We moseyed to the front of Grier Jr. High for a speed bump merkinfest.  The PAX were instructed to do 21 merkins at one speed bump and then proceed back and forth for more merkins counting down from 21 to 1.  It was a lot of merkins and proved difficult but everyone pushed and got through it.  Short Sale mentioned he wished we did some Morrocan Nightclubs before the merkinfest so I had him lead us in a set afterwards.  By this time I told Monk he was “swole” and I don’t think he was familiar with it.  That is not a word they use in the religious studies department but after you do 210 merkins in 11 minutes there is no other word to describe it.

Then we headed to the steps at FPC for some DORA 1-2-3.  Partner 1 runs to the top of the steps and does 10 Sumo Squats (Gastone style) while Partner 2 stays at the bottom and completes an aggregate count of 100 CDD’s, 200 LBC’s, and 300 Flutter kicks.

We then moseyed to the track at Sherwood for more partner work.  P1 begins lunging the track counterclockwise while P2 runs clockwise until they meet and then switch.  After a lap was completed we moseyed to the playground for some burpeethon training.

Burpees at the top of the minute counting down from 12 to 8 for 50 burpees in 5 minutes.  We moseyed back to home taking the nature trail back to the Painlab convergence and closing Mary exercises of LBC’s, Homer/Marge, and then 5 more burpees as the bells tolled signaling the end of the workout.

COT:  Prayers for Ash Pond for healing and relief, prayers for Spidermonkey’s parents in Tampa, THANKS to the Gashouse PAX for their support of Speed for Need and the Burpeethon next weekend supporting the Special Olympics.  Sign up for these events and brings your families to both as they will be no doubt be memorable for sure.  The Mayor and his M are humbled by our support.  Great effort on their part to make it happen!

One benefit of the pending storm in Florida was that Yo Adrian was able to be home on a Saturday and post at the Gashouse and bring his truck and strong back to help with a quick service project to support Gaston Family Promise.  Speaking of promises, Whoopee posted at Folsom but showed to support the effort and brought biscuits because Whoopee is the MAN!.  Whoopee also reported that Folsom had 17 PAX today and lots of credit goes to #HIM Huckleberry for keeping that place going in lean times and it is good to see it thriving.  If you haven’t been they start at 0630 and it is a great AO and one of the strongest Coffeeteria’s on the tour.  Nothing like watching Gumby order a cheeseburger and fries at 0745.  Sparky also posted at Folsom and then brought his truck so we could get the work done that much faster.  Mastodon let me borrow his truck so we had three trucks.  Short Sale showed up and we were able to knock out the move in an hour and make an impact for families that are homeless and looking for a fresh start.  THANK YOU!

If anyone is interested in helping build a Habitat House next week I will post the address sometime this week.  We will be working the next two Saturdays.

Mark Lee of Third Day is performing and sharing his faith and stories from his new book “Hurt Road” at First Presbyterian Church tomorrow.  Davinci and Dr. Feelgood are leading the effort.  Tickets are free but you need to sign up through Eventbrite.  Try this link:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mark-lee-from-third-day-an-evening-of-songs-stories-testimony-tickets-35652022158

A co-worker of Tool time showed up as an FNG today and he said he wanted to join F3 if the rest of us were like Tool Time.  After some comments about his questionable judgement Whoopee asked him what movie he had seen recently and he replied “IT”.  Welcome Gacy to the PAX!  We look forward to seeing you in the Gloom!

Our region is thriving but there are other men in our area that are struggling.  We need to be on the hunt for sad clowns and always EH’ing.  We also had an FNG Friday now known as “Snowman” so Bandit has some company.  Snowman heard about F3 on the Art of Manliness podcast.  Keep spreading the word.  It was a pleasure to lead today and a great effort getting after it today.

September 3rd F Preblast, Restoration and Forgiveness

This month’s theme is on Restoration and Forgiveness.  YHC was consumed in August with both work and vacation so I must make Cobains (all apologies) for not posting a preblast.  I appreciate those who stepped up and stood in the gap for me.  This month I have felt it is important to share on the Forgiveness and Restoration that our Lord has provided for us through his Son.  There has been much turmoil with Hurricanes, Fire raging throughout the country, political and social unrest; like everyone in our great country suddenly hates his neighbor. In all the focus on the spec in our neighbors eye we lose sight of one fact: We who judge the other are far from perfect ourselves.  Thank God that he has provided a way to reconcile us to Himself.

Week 1 I planned on sharing on Daniel 6: King Darius was a king who loved his servant Daniel but was bound by the law and forced to put Daniel in the lions den, but God had another plan.  In John 8: A woman was condemned to die by the law of Moses for adultery,  but Jesus had another plan.  How do these 2 people condemned for breaking the law find restoration and forgiveness?  Unfortunately I did not blast this out so only JJ arrived in time for the 3rd F gathering.  I will share on this in week 3

Week 2, Hushpuppy will be celebrating his 16th anniversary with his M and will not make Saturday 9/9.  This opportunity is open for anyone who would like to step up and share.

Week 3:Daniel 6 and John 8

Week 4: Luke 15:11-32 “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion. His father ran to him, hugged him, and kissed him.21 Then his son said, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. ” We all know the story of the prodigal son, but who restored who? The story of the loving father and his 2 sons will remind us of God’s love towards us and the end we may ask, “Which son am I?”

Week 5: Hosea Chapter 2: Sometimes God allows us to go through turmoil when we are stubborn, but his desire is always to restore them.

Beginning Tuesday 9/12 We will begin reading “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel at the Crusade.  Join us from 6am to 6:30 every Tuesday at the Starbucks in Harris Teeter at the corner of Robinwood and Kendrick.  Get your copy here:

good amount of mumble chatter this morning. NC State vs USC battling today. ASU will have another upset over Georgia on 10 year anniversary of Michigan upset. I was complimented on my shirt. It was “the Ultimate Warrior” face paint.  I was told by Roscoe that if I wear it to Pres next Sunday morning for service by Third Day fellow, he would buy my coffee. So writing it here is a legal binding contract.

but the best part of the beat down was 11 PAX watching Linus lead 2 other PAX in untangling the jump ropes. That burned a good 5 minutes.  I was awarded my Boy Scout Knot Tying badge for my handy work. Your welcome Linus.

Good times had by all & as always, an honor to lead a SUPERB group of fellas

Double Omaha

It seems here lately that YHC has the ability to bring the rain. Literally. The weather has been rainy the last few times YHC has led the group at Midoriyama. At first, it looked as if the rain would slack off long enough for the original weinke. As the afternoon progressed, the weather looked as if it wasn’t going to cooperate. YHC Omaha’d to a “Rainy Day” weinke and instructed the PAX to post at the picnic shelter. After YHC arrived on site, he was greeted by brother Tool Time, Def Leppard, Lil’ Sweet, and lastly, Blart (who came out of the turd shack like he was shot from a cannon). The rain was light at best, and Tool Time REALLY didn’t want YHC’s rainy weinke. YHC really didn’t want it either, so YHC Omaha’d back to the original weinke (that he left sitting on the bar back home, of course). 5:30 rolled around, so here we go.

Warmup:

  • SSH x 15 IC
  • Merkins x 3 IC
  • Staggered Merkins (right in front of left) x 3 IC
  • Staggered Merkins (left in front of right) x 3 IC
  • Werkins x 3 IC
  • Diamond Merkins x 3 IC
  • Moroccan Nightclubs x 20 IC

The Thang:

Grab the shovel flag and mosey up past the playground to long parking lot and back to the playground for the beginning of a 1/2 Murph.

  • 1/2 mile run (just completed)
  • 10 rounds of: 5 Pullups, 10 Merkins, 15 Squats
  • 1/2 mile run (will be performed at end of workout)

After the Pullups, Merkins, and Squats, YHC led the men to the parking lot for:

Route 66 Mountain Climbers IC

Next, PAX lined up on one curb for some Burpee Dans. Pockets introduced this exercise to Midoriyama a little while back. Starting at one side, perform one Burpee, then Lunge forward one step per leg, the repeat the Burpee/ Lunge cycle until PAX reaches the other side. Come back with 2 Burpees/ Lunge 2 steps. Repeat back and forth up to 5 Burpees. This one really takes a toll on the body (especially after the 1/2 Murph work). Excellent work by all PAX. They really worked their tails off. The cool temps and light rain really helped prevent any passing out/ Merlot splashing. Tool Time voiced his disgusted pleasure (if there is such a thing) with Pockets for bringing these to Midoriyama. Also a shout out to the other men- Def Leppard pushing hard to “keep that butt down” during any Merkins/ Burpees. Blart quietly keeps pushing the rock and knocking all exercises out like Floyd Mayweather on that McGregor guy (sorry Tool Time). Lil’ Sweet actually cheers any time a Burpee exercise is called! Outstanding! And Tool Time pushes hard every time he posts. No matter how tired he is, he is always slinging out the mumble chatter!

At this time, YHC spoke very briefly about Matthew 5:37 : “But let your communication be, Yes, yes; No; no: for whatever is more than these comes of evil.” As  a HIM, our word must be solid. YHC commented that it seems the value of a man’s word has diminished over time. If you say it, do it. Be the example of this especially in front of younger men who need to see that type of behavior in us. Be a man of your word.

PAX then grabbed the shovel flag and moseyed back to the picnic shelter (last 1/2 mile of the 1/2 Murph) for:

The PLEDGE, and

22 Merkins for the Veterans.

Announcements:

  • Speed for Need (sign up now. It’s going to fill up quick after this weekend)
  • JJ5K in Stanley Sept. 23rd.
  • Burpeethon Sept. 16th.
  • Dry run of the Gas House AO run. DM Pizza Man if you are interested.
  • Sparky has contacted Samaritan’s Purse about helping the victims of Harvey. Tentative date is early October. Sparky will have more details soon.

COT:

Prayer requests: The victims of Harvey in Texas and Louisiana, our Country, and a young 9 year old that Def Leppard mentioned. After hearing his story, this young man has gone through more sickness and pain in his short 9 years than any of us have in our lives combined.

Keep lifting each other up in prayer!

Thanks for the opportunity to lead! Had a great time pushing the rock with my brothers!

Training Day

With football as the most popular sport, it is a fair estimate that most, if not all of our PAX are excited for the various seasons to begin. Two weeks of high school games have been completed; college begins Labor Day with the NFL opening the week after. A demanding game which requires year round conditioning but really increases a month before the season with training camps, many of them having dreaded “two-a-days.” With the GasHouse slot open an idea sparked and I grabbed the Q. As a scrawny 130 pound teenager with a few broken arms on my medical history, my body was not designed for the grid iron. Sure there was neighborhood two hand touch and later in college, intramural flag-football, but I never had the pleasure to experience the cardio beat-downs under a piercing sun, in a helmet and pads. With that in mind, I researched various drills designed to make boys into men and men into, well tougher men.

Missing from the plan was the heat, a pleasant reprieve from the August humidity, it was a relatively nice mid-70’s. I arrived to join Hushpuppy and Shrink in a 3rd F lesson about Jonah and the challenges he faced. Slowly cars began to fill the parking lot and the circle formed with two FNG’s. The disclaimer was emphasized: “the QIC’s will provide suggestions and you may choose the follow them; modify as needed; find your limit and challenge yourself when you can. I threw a bit of a twist into the warm-up asking the PAX to get on their knees (shut-up and get your mind out of the gutters…)

Warm-up

  • Child’s pose Merkins (hands stretched out front, put your butt on your heels; move forward into plank, 1 merkin. Back to start with butt to heels, forward for 2 merkins. We built to 5. A slow starter that gently stretches the shoulders. Some mumble chatter about knees on asphalt achieved desired affect).
  • Don Quixote – IC x 10
  • Toy Soldier – IC x 10
  • Seal Jacks – IC x 10

That was it; not as fast as a Whoopee warm-up, but pretty quick. The PAX separated with five following Rudolph for the Pain Lab and 11 coming with me, but pausing to pay our respects at the flag with The Pledge. We continued up the sidewalk making our way to the Grier Middle School football field, picking up the bucket of water left by the Q. In researching the workout two things were noticeable, a practice plan and water breaks. In honor of Brownstreak, the Weinke or Practice Plan was distributed for review. With full disclosure, the PAX would know the exercises and the reps so they could manage their pace. A quote was provided at the top of the page: “I make my practices real hard because if a player is a quitter, I want him to quit in practice, not in a game.” Bear Bryant. The practice plan was intentionally hard and challenging.

The Thang:

Slaughter Starter

  • 20 Burpees OYO ; Run to the 50 yd line; plank for 6
  • When last man arrives, yell “go”; team performs 10 merkins OYO
  • Run to the goaline, plank for the 6
  • Rest/Repeat

Snake

  • Line up on left side of goal line (single file), follow Q
  • Karioke Left to Right; NUR to the 10 yd line
  • Karioke Right to Left; NUR to the 20, etc. continue to the 50

Gut Busters

  • Line across the 50 yard line; High Knees in place
  • Q calls for 10 up/downs (burps) OYO;
  • With high knees, move forward to 40 yd line
  • Q calls for 10 merkins OYO
  • Continue pattern until reaching goal line

Boo-yah Merkins – partner up

  • Partners face each other on opposite sides of 20 yd line
  • Perform 10 merkins, alternating shoulder taps on partner
  • Partners run opposite directions 20 yards, perform 20 squats
  • Partners return to 20 yard line; 10 merkins, etc.
  • Aggregate team total of 100 merkins/200 squats (If you went to Chapel Hill, that’s 5 rounds)

Shuttle Drills

  • Q called for P2 to rest but Pele began SSH’s so the resting partners joined in and removing the rest.
  • P1 begins at the 50 yd line; Q signals to ‘go’
  • P1 sprints right to 45 line, then left to the opposite 45 yd line, then returns to the start. Switch – 3 rounds per man

Water break – PAX sprinted to the bucket of water bottles. Q informed them there were 10 minutes left and this was the gut check time, to finish strong.

Walk – Jog – Sprint

  • Line up on the goal line
  • Walk to the 10 yd line; Begin jogging to 30, Sprint to the 50
  • Perform 10 CDD’s, 10 plank jacks, 10 in/outs in successive order
  • Perform this circuit three times

Slaughter Finisher

  • Begin at goal line, 2 burpees OYO
  • Run 10 yards, 2 burpees
  • Repeat pattern until reaching the opposite goal line

Jailbreak to the parking lot for Mary where Rudolph and his crew were waiting. Since I had the warm-up, Rudolph took the closing 5 minutes. I’m a little fuzzy on all the exercises and reps as the PAX choice was invoked. From what I recollect we did: LBC’s, Flutter Kicks for a pretty good bit with the Q slowing, speeding up and holding various counts. The Warden (a real football coach) led us in leg raises, toying with the PAX on a few hold counts as well. The Bandit was called upon and surprised us when he didn’t announce his favorite dying coach roach but 10 Burpees! Mumble chatter flowed until the bells rang and the workout was complete.

The Mayor arrived with his M and 2.0’s to accept applications for The Burpee Workout (9/16 at 9:00 am). We made note of the JJ 5k. Prayers were lifted for T-Square and his M. Smalls and Papa John found some poison ivy as young boys often can, prayers for their healing (and less itching). We then named our FNG’s. Rudolph EH’ed his neighbor, Joe Sherrill for three years with this morning being the payoff. Joe pushed for a cool name and nearly paid the price but the PAX were kind naming him as Over the Top (Joe runs a trucking company). Next is Max Rheinson, a member of Gaston County Police department whose favorite restaurant (or the last one visited) will be known as Bo Berry. YHC closed us out in prayer.

Moleskin

As stated, Training Day was designed to be a tough workout for any PAX. For the real football players, the grueling two-a-days transform into daily practices and weekly games which fans can appreciate from the comforts of their recliners or live in the stadium. The single hour of punishment we experienced pales in comparison to the boys and men in uniform on the field of play. That is something to keep in mind as we cheer our respective teams this season. My daughter plays soccer and I’ve been guilty of cheering a little too hard. While we all want our kids to experience the highs of success, we need to appreciate the opportunities to enjoy and learn from their competitions whether its dancing, running, swimming…any type of performance. I’ve witnessed overweight adults with large rear ends planted in chairs, taking a break from their chips and soft drinks to scream at their kids, identifying their mistakes in front of others. Imploring their kid (and sometimes others) to run faster when their own fitness is challenged by a walk from the field to the car. So Training Day reminds us of the challenge athletes of all ages face. We should strive to appreciate their efforts; cheer the positive and support through the negative. Those players are doing their best, just like all of us. The late Joe Paterno once shared with his Penn State team: “Today, you’ve got a decision to make. You’re gonna get better or you’re gonna get worse, but you’re not gonna stay the same. Which will it be?”
