Is no snow good news?

Only bad news as Oompa Loompa was the Q. The weather geeks missed the massive snowfall amount, so all the fartsackers have no excuse either. Enough bellyaching. Let’s get to it.

Four runners out getting 10 miles this morning. Eight got stuck with a Countdown Beatdown. No new bees, pledge, disclaimer.
Warmup
All in cadence: SSH, ABE VIGODA, MNC, TOY SOLDIERS, Helicopter twists, trunk twisters.
Mosey to tennis court.

The Countdown Beatdown
Start at the corner by the gate. 20 merkins. Run to next corner. Counterclockwise. 19 LBC. Run to next corner. 18 CDD. Run to next corner. 17 Freddie Mercury’s. Run to start and plank for the six. Rinse and Repeat until we countdown to one.

Next circuit. Clockwise. Did this to keep the abs and arms reps equal. 20 Freddie Mercury’s. Run. 19 CDD. Run. 18 LBC. Run. 17 merkins. As above.

Next circuit. Counterclockwise. As first set above.

Last circuit. Clockwise.
5 every corner same exercise sequence. Three of the runners joined the party. Someone else CHERRY PICKED so didn’t join. Got 3 or 4 circuits. Lost count after brain freeze.

Back to flag in the parking lot.

SYITG

You Blockhead

YHC picked up a last minute Q after Wojo reached out looking for a substitute.

Decided do blocks as YHC had never used them in a Q. Nantan out mall walking.

530pm, time to start. 7 pax plus the Q.
All old timers with lots of experience.
Even Blart. He thought that i inferred he was old. More on that later.

Warm up. Circle of death with SSH and burpee waterfall. Enough. Mosey to woods to pick up blocks. Mosey to parking lot by the turd shack.

The thang.
Four sets of 10 exercises in cadence with block. First exercise curls. Put down block. Mosey to first line, one merkin, one LBC, one SSH.
Mosey to back to start. Pick up block.

Second exercise upright rows. Mosey to second line, merkin, lbc, ssh. Back to start.

Third exercise trunk twisters. Mosey to third line, rinse and repeat.

Fourth exercise overhead presses. Mosey to fourth line, rinse and repeat.

Thirty minutes left.

Rinse and Repeat above. Each pax took a turn alternating arms and ab exercises between sets of the above. Got three full rounds in.

Short mosey around parking lot break up the monotony of blocks.

Sargento noted that YHC and he had the only sedans in the parking lot. Something else we have in common is we both hate blocks, have soccer arms, smart, devilishly handsome, sauve and debonair. LOL. Well, him anyway.

Fifteen minutes left. Thanks nantan on keeping track of the time. Return blocks to woods. Long mosey around parking lot. Back to flag for Mary.

Two rounds of arms and abs exercises called out in cadence by each pax.
YHC accused of not having a weinke and just making stuff up. Blart had his brother in law fart near his head. Close enough from him to to taste anyway. Those aftereffects made Blart to pull a Leppard and not realize the difference between hillbillies and Imperial walkers.

22 for the vets.

We had a beautiful sunset too!

Run the last mile

Named this Q from events I witnessed from last week. Montross gutting out the last uphill mile of Christmastown 5K, and Hacksaw limping to the end of the Turkey Day Pub 5K.

It was clear and cold. Nice starry sky with a crescent moon. Some runners were already on the course. Disclaimer was “Don’t get hurt. Be back at 6:15”.

We ran. 10 runners with the guesstimate of the average distance covered was 5 miles, some ran 7, some ran 5, YHC ran a hair under 4, some ran 3. Sister Act couldn’t pass the old geezer on the last bit.

All returned safely to the flag. Traffic was bit scary this morning. Slaw & Broke jumped in the ditch avoiding vehicles on Bessemer City Hwy, and YHC busted his butt getting out of the crosswalk at the 321 Dallas ramp where some dude didn’t slow down and ran the stop sign.

Prayer requests: Toepick’s mom, Broke’s mom, Goudelock family, praise on girl from Purple Haze’s church waiting on heart transplant, Mayor’s M, Huck’s mom and others than weren’t spoken.

Upcoming attractions: Christmas party the 11th. Sign up. Biloxi half marathon end of January.

Thanks for allowing me to Q. Sorry I forgot the pledge.

Old school Folsom

Yesterday the scheduled Q informed me that he had a bad case of the plantar fasciitis and needed to rest before the Speed for Need at McAdenville. (Really, he planned on staying up late to watch the Dookies.) No biggie, I told him I would gladly hijack his Q…. I needed an excuse to Q at Folsom.

Showed up, temps right around freezing, time to start.
Warm up.
40 Moroccan night clubs IC while we waited for the site Q to plant the shovel flag.
20 SSH IC. 25 LBC IC. 15 Toy soldiers IC. 10 CDD IC.

The thang:
YHC and the 10 PAX called out 10 arm exercises, 10 ab exercises, and 10 leg exercises all IC.

Went two full rounds (almost) around the circle with each pax picking and calling out an exercise. No running was planned but Sarlacc went rogue and forced us to run once lap around the tennis court. That was the only running that happened, like back in the 2016/2017 Folsom days when we didn’t hardly run at all.

We did cherry pickers, cherry droppers, MNC, shoulder taps, merkins, more merkins, and then more merkins, flutters, LBCs, box cutters, hammers, rosalitas, heels to heavens and other abs. Burpees, squats, Bonnie Blairs, Ohno Apollos, jump squats, lunges, more lunges, more squats, rocky balboas, mike tysons. More CDD, shoulder taps, werkins, more burpees, more merkins, more squats, big boys, and some kind of 6 count conniptions that Ball joint made up.

Stogie rolled out after his second round, along with Volt at the 30 minute mark.

Purple Haze scarred us for life by wearing his Spiderman PJ’s to the workout. Luckily it was cold, so we only saw raisins or just two itty bitty grains of sand. Should the Pax take up a collection to buy the boy some shorts?

With the holiday seasons upon us, take time to remember those with empty seats around the dinner table. Whether though death, overseas duty, missionary work, hospitalization or other events, be thankful for the loved ones you have in your life.

Thanksgiving trifecta coming up. 0530, 0700, 0830.

Island of Death (Redux)

Disclaimer, Pledge.

As it’s coming up on the Marine Corps birthday and Veteran’s Day, I decided to try a themed workout ala Big Pappy.

Hershel Woodrow “Woody” Williams (born October 2, 1923) is a retired United States Marine Corps warrant officer and United States Department of Veterans Affairs veterans service representative who received the United States military’s highest decoration for valor—the Medal of Honor—for heroism above and beyond the call of duty during the Battle of Iwo Jima in World War II. Since the death of Charles H. Coolidge on April 6, 2021, Williams is the only living Medal of Honor recipient from World War II.

Williams, the youngest of eleven children, was born and raised on a dairy farm in Quiet Dell, West Virginia, on October 2, 1923. By the time he was 11, his father had died of a heart attack and several of his siblings had died of a flu pandemic.

Based on the loss of this family members at age eleven:
Elevens-Freddie Mercuries & Iron Hulks. Lots of mumble chatter here (especially from Freight).

Williams was drawn to the Marines by their dress blue uniforms that he had seen several men in his community wear. He disliked the Army’s brown wool uniform that he considered “… the ugliest thing in town … I decided I did not want to be in that thing. I want to be in those dress blues.” Aside from the appearance of the uniform, Williams knew nothing of the Marines. Standing 5-foot-6, when Williams tried to enlist in the Marine Corps in 1942, he was told he was too short for service. After the height regulations were changed in early 1943, he successfully enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve in Charleston, West Virginia, on May 26.

Being 66 inches tall:

Williams received his recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, California. Upon completion, he was sent to the Camp Elliott training center in San Diego, where he joined the tank training battalion and was later transferred to the training center’s infantry battalion for instruction as a demolition man and in the use of flamethrowers.

Upon completion of training in January 1944, he joined Company C, 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division at Guadalcanal, where his unit later fought the Japanese during the battle of Guam.

In honor of the 21st Marine Regiment:
Twentyones-Shoulder Taps IC

Williams’ next and final campaign was at the Battle of Iwo Jima, where he distinguished himself with actions “above and beyond the call of duty”, for which he would be awarded the Medal of Honor.

The President of the United States in the name of The Congress takes pleasure in presenting the
MEDAL OF HONOR
to
CORPORAL HERSHEL W. WILLIAMS
UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS RESERVE
for service as set forth in the following
CITATION:
For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty as Demolition Sergeant serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-First Marines, Third Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Island, 23 February 1945. Quick to volunteer his services when our tanks were maneuvering vainly to open a lane for the infantry through the network of reinforced concrete pillboxes, buried mines and black, volcanic sands, Corporal Williams daringly went forward alone to attempt the reduction of devastating machine-gun fire from the unyielding positions. Covered only by four riflemen, he fought desperately for four hours under terrific enemy small-arms fire and repeatedly returned to his own lines to prepare demolition charges and obtain serviced flame throwers, struggling back, frequently to the rear of hostile emplacements, to wipe out one position after another. On one occasion he daringly mounted a pillbox to insert the nozzle of his flame thrower through the air vent, kill the occupants and silence the gun; on another he grimly charged enemy riflemen who attempted to stop him with bayonets and destroyed them with a burst of flame from his weapon. His unyielding determination and extraordinary heroism in the face of ruthless enemy resistance were directly instrumental in neutralizing one of the most fanatically defended Japanese strong points encountered by his regiment and aided in enabling his company to reach its’ [sic] objective. Corporal Williams’ aggressive fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty throughout this fiercely contested action sustain and enhance the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
/S/ HARRY S. TRUMAN

These actions occurred on the same day that two flags were raised on Mount Suribachi, and Williams, about one thousand yards away from the volcano, was able to witness the event. He fought through the remainder of the five-week-long battle even though he was wounded on March 6 in the leg by shrapnel, for which he was awarded the Purple Heart.

Five weeks = 35 days:
Thirty-five Mountain Climbers IC

In September 1945, he returned to the United States, and on October 1 he joined Marine Corps Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He and thirteen other servicemen were presented the Medal of Honor by President Harry S. Truman on October 5, 1945, at the White House.

Two of the four riflemen covering Williams were killed. In 2020 Williams said, “Once I found out that this happened, this Medal of Honor took on a different significance. I said, from that point on, it does not belong to me. It belongs to them. I wear it in their honor. I keep it shined for them, because there is no greater sacrifice than when someone sacrifices their life for you and me.” In 2017, UPS executive Pat O’Leary and one of Williams’s grandchildren discovered through documentaries the identity of the two Marines who sacrificed their lives for Williams during the Battle of Iwo Jima. They were identified as 24-year-old Corporal Warren Harding Bornholz, of New York City, and 20-year-old Private First Class Charles Gilbert Fischer, of Somers, Montana. They were killed in action while protecting Williams from Japanese enemy fire on February 23, 1945.

On October 20, 1954, he joined the Organized Marine Reserve when the 98th Special Infantry Company was authorized by Headquarters Marine Corps to be located at Clarksburg, West Virginia.
He was advanced through the warrant officer ranks during his time in the Marine Corps Reserve until reaching his final rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CWO4). Although CWO4 Williams technically did not meet retirement requirements, he was honorarily retired from the Marine Corps Reserve in 1969 after approximately 17 years of service.

Seventeen years of service:
17 Flutter Kicks IC

On February 4, 2018, Williams along with 14 other living Medal of Honor recipients was honored at the Super Bowl LII during the coin toss. He is the only living Marine Corps Medal of Honor recipient from World War II. Williams was selected to do the official coin toss for the game. The coin toss ceremony set a record for most coin toss participants as Super Bowl LII was dedicated to them.

14 other living Medal of Honor recipients:
14 Hipslappers

Named in his honor:
• Hershel “Woody” Williams VA Medical Center
• Hershel “Woody” Williams VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 7048
• West Virginia National Guard Armory
• USS Hershel “Woody” Williams (ESB-4), a Mobile Landing Platform built by General Dynamics NASSCO at their San Diego shipyard.

• In a 2020 Washington Post interview remembering the 75th anniversary of the Iwo Jima battle, Williams credits his religious awakening with ending his nightmares and transforming his life.

One AARP eligible pax, drove into the parking lot at Midoriyama at 5:20pm.
Where the heck is everyone? Only vehicle parked is Slaw’s Duke Energy van done by the turd shack.
It’s just a little rain. Yella bellied cowards. Rudolph arrives. Slaw informed YHC “I got 1730”. Okay. Just the three amigos then. Pledge. One burpee. 10 SSH in cadence. Another burpee. 10 MNC in cadence. Another burpee. 10 Toy soldiers in cadence.
Hi Montross. About dang time. Another burpee. 10 SSH in cadence. Hi Blart. Another burpee. Wall sits with air presses in cadence. Another burpee.
See a pattern yet? About this time
YHC brain and voice locked up. All had fun mimicking YHC cadance count and poor instructions. At least YHC showed up.

We also did multiple rounds of wall taps, dips, incline merkins, step-ups, squats, more SSH, shoulder taps, wall sits, air presses, hipslappers, calf raises, toe raises, LBCS, oblique crunches to the left and right, mike tysons, flutters, rosalitas, Freddy Mercurys, iron mikes, interspersed with a burpee. Bounty of Mutiny

Showed up at THE PUB, on a beautiful Thursday fall morning with temps in the low 50’s. Perfect weather for a run.

Sister Act and Dr. Seuss must have kissed and made up as they were sighted skipping hand in hand about a mile away up Hoffman Road while YHC was driving in. Sister Act had his usual glowing words of encouragement to YHC as he passed the Q on the way back to the flag. No rule that says you can’t Q from the six.

At the start, we pledged, all experienced PAX, so no disclaimer. I offered people’s choice of route by telling all to run where ever you want, how far you want and how fast you want, just be back at 6:15 for COT.
All declined to choose a route. Like a bunch of whiny teenagers they bitch when you boss them around and bitch even more when you give them a chance to decide something for themselves. Bitch, bitch, bitch, the Q’s not leading us. Bitch, bitch, bitch, we don’t know what to do. So YHC compromised and they were ORDERED run to Martha’s and back.

Slaw got an early Halloween jump scare. Boo! Underwear change. Ask him.
Sister Act’s and Dr. Seuss’ vehicles were gone when we arrived back at the flag for the COT.
