Skipping Rope

A baker’s dozen for the first Midoriyama Beatdown of 2024, and we all witnessed the majestic skipping of a former Nantan.  Here’s what I remember:\

The Thang:

We started with

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

I don’t know why.  Had something to do with the Site Q.

  • 10 x SSH (IC)

Time to scratch the itch again

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

Ok, enough of that, onto the regularly scheduled Weinke

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbillies (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)

Quick stop at the Turd Shack on the way to today’s location.  We weren’t going far from the flag today.

At the Turd Shack, we found some wall space and did

  • 1 Minute – Wall Sits/Dwight Howards

Where the PAX would hold the Wall Sit as long as they could (or chose to) and whenever they stopped they did Dwight Howards until they started the Wall Sit again.  We would come back to this.

Quick mosey to the nearest parking lot, beside the cages, where we had all the playground toys:  chalk, jump ropes, a speaker, cinder blocks.  The usual stuff.

For our circuit, we would do 50 seconds on and 10 seconds to switch of the following exercises:

  • Jump Rope
  • Perfect Form Merkins
  • V Ups
  • Crab Marches
  • Block Merkins
  • Jane Fondas

The first circuit, and first exercises, there it was.  A creature, gliding effortlessly as the jump rope turned.  A running gallop, that can only be described as “skipping rope”.  The PAX were amazed and clapped and cheered and we all knew we were in the presence of greatness.  Or something like that.

We finished the circuit, then ran an oddly shaped lap around some parking lot and went back to the Turd Shack for round 2

  • 2 Minute – Wall Sits/Dwight Howards

The thing about the Turd Shack is that there are corners, and people facing different directions, and YHC had no idea what was happening on the other side of the wall, so who knows what work was being done.

Back to the circuit, for round 2 of:

  • Jump Rope
  • Perfect Form Merkins
  • V Ups
  • Crab Marches
  • Block Merkins
  • Jane Fondas

Another lap, but this one shorter, and we just kept moseying this time to the Footmobile, which was strategically parked at a parking lot not far from where we were, and was where the next round of beatings commenced.

Choices.  As a benevolent Q, I presented choices to the PAX.  On one hand, there are guys that don’t want to do block work, but want to run.  On the other hand, there are those that just want to do block work.  Well pick.  Today, we did dueling filthy “Sevens”, though they could’ve been dirtier.  Seven minutes on the clock to do the work.

So think Triple Nickel, but with 7 reps and for 7 minutes:

  • 7 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 7 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
  • Run between

or

  • 7 x Thrusters (OYO)
  • 7 x Block Swings (OYO)
  • Block Carry between

It was a grind, but everyone did it.  Seems like the block group was pushing harder than the runners, but maybe the Q was biased.  Anyways, back to the turd shack, again.

  • 2 Minute – Wall Sits/Dwight Howards

And back towards the stations, but not to the stations.  We close with the core.

Cora Por Dies

  • Partner 1: Alternate between 10 reps of American Hammers & LBCs until Partner 2 returns
  • Partner 2: Run to the end of the lot and back
  • Switch and repeat

Then Round 2:

  • Partner 1: Alternate between 10 reps of Freddie Mercuries & Flutter Kicks
  • Partner 2: Run to the end of the lot and back
  • Switch and repeat

Do it all over again.  Another round with Hammers & LBCs.  Another round with Freddies & Flutters.

And that was it.  Another Midoriyama Beatdown in the books.

Solid start to the New Year.   This year, as every year, may we work towards being the men we need to be for those that need us, in our fitness, our fellowship, and our faith.

We’ve got a whole year of pages to write in.  Let’s make em count.

5 of us got out for a Pre-Beer Run warm-up bootcamp.  Mixed in some new with the standard, and went back to pick up the Six as they were saving their legs to run 1 mile later in the day.  Here’s what I remember:

The Thang:

No new faces, so a disclaimer, then time for work

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbillies (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

Split off, but bootcampers didn’t leave the parking lot just yet.  Time for some double dutch.

Recycled from Tuesday at Bulldog, but just a short sequence today with the jump ropes.  Partner up, and 1 PAX does the exercises while the other jumps rope.  Switch and do the same exercises.  Then switch back for the next exercises and continue on until all exercises are done by all PAX.

The exercises:

  • 10 x Mike Tysons
  • 20 x Bulgarian Split Squats (10 x each leg)
  • 30 x Dips

Wrapped that up, then moved on to Burtonwood in front of First Presbyterian for the next call, stopping twice for:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

Also during the stops today, instead of a 10 count, we went with reflections of gratitude for 2023.

So once to Burtonwood, we modified the Zombie Apocalypse from YHC’s Thanksgiving Q.  This time, instead of working in groups, the whole group would Zombie Walk to the Stop sign way far in the distance.  1 PAX at a time would break off from the group, run to the Stop sign, and then run back.  We did this until Roscoe got caught up in conversation and didn’t run.  Truth be told, it didn’t change things.  The lunges were the worst of it.

Next we moseyed to uncharted territory, the Kindercare on Dixon across from Sherwood.  After scouting out Sherwood’s parking lot and finding it unfavorable and a potential source of Sandy V, YHC made the call to go to the day care.  There were at least 8 parking spots at the front, perfect for stations, and we had blocks, bricks, dumbbells and the like out there to put in work.  50 seconds of work, 10 seconds to switch stations.  Exercises were:

  • Squeezes (Half Block)
    • Standing, press the block in front of you while squeezing it to keep it stable
  • Plank Flys (Bricks)
  • Curls (Double Bricks)
  • Flutter Kicks
  • Thrusters (Block)
  • Double Crunches (2 x 5 pound dumbbells)
  • 1-armed Rows (Block)
  • Star Boys
    • Big Boys, but cross over and touch left toe with right hand and flapjack)

Next, we moseyed down to the Sherwood track for some modified Lightning action.

  • Run 1 Lap
  • 10 x Jump Squats (OYO)
  • 20 x Merkins (OYO)
  • 30 x LBCs (OYO)
  • Sprint across the field
  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • Run 2 Laps

YHC realized that he planned for probably 2 hours, as we weren’t close to finished with the Weinke and we were cutting everything short.  We headed back up to the stations at Kindercare and each PAX picked 5 of the stations to work through for a second round.  Then we loaded up the blocks and headed back to the Schiele, stopping along the way for:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

And somehow that was it.  We lunged a lot, and ran a little, lifted some things and put them down, and gave it a good solid 75% out there today.  At least one of the PAX went on to place in the Beer Mile.  So yeah.

Moleskin:

So I took the Q, only because I realized I was just a couple Qs away from Qing at every F3 Gastonia AO in 2023.  Might as well finish the Bingo card, so I took Bulldog Tuesday and Gashouse today.  With 52 Qs available each year at every AO, it’s certainly reasonable to take one of them.  Looking forward to doing it again next year.

Gratitude today was given for time with the M, health, new opportunities, and growth in our 2.0s, among other things.  I must admit that it’s been a good year with a lot to be thankful for.

But the grind don’t stop.  Bring on 2024 and a chance to do it all again.

The Duck Dynasty Route

Solid group of 9 for the debut of the Duck Dynasty Route.  Why is it named the Duck Dynasty Route you ask?  Well let me tell you.  When running the Duck Dynasty Route, you’re never more than a mile from the shovel flag, which means you’re always within earshot of any duck calls or SOS from headquarters.  Every good route gets a name, even if it’s just the Sargento Route Backwards.

We didn’t lose any out of town guests (thanks to Roscoe), and Termite may or may not have needed to use the facilities.  All in a good day’s run.

The Time Warp

4 PAX braved harsh 55 degree misty conditions that persuaded PAX region wide to stay in the Fartsack.  The season of giving continued with equipment sharing and 2 for 1 deals.  And we jumped rope.  A lot.  Here’s what I remember:

0525 – YHC pulls up and drops off 2 blocks and a set of jump ropes

0531 – YHC parks the car and hurries to get things started

What the…?  What just happened?  The Bulldog parking lot Time Warp struck again.  The Site Q informed me of the Time Warp after the workout was over.  We made up for it though.

Disclaimer given, and 4 PAX, but only 3 with bells.  YHC brought 2 blocks for carrying, but that wouldn’t work for some of the exercises on the Weinke.  Nutria had 2 kettlebells.  Next thing we know, Winehouse has a bell, and Nutria is left with the big rock.  No worries.  Dude’s a monster and a pro.  He will figure it out.

The Thang:

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Gravel Pickers (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbillies (IC)

Still scrambling, YHC ditched the carry for a simple meander around the parking lot so he could fumble with his phone and put on music.  Spiderman brought is block though, so we weren’t all just mall walking.

So here’s the routine:

  • 10 x Halos CCW (OYO)
  • 10 x American Hammers w/Bell (OYO)

Next we partner up.

  • Partner 2 – Jump Rope til Partner 1 finishes
  • Switch
  • Repeato for all Exercises

So everybody does all of all the exercises, and when their partners are doing exercises, they’re just jumping rope.  Exercises for round 1 were:

  • 10 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 20 x Merkins (OYO)
  • 30 x Squats (OYO)
  • 40 x LBCs (OYO)

That was a lot of jumping rope, especially when you don’t do it much.  Don’t worry.  There were 2 more rounds coming.

So next on the Weinke was a sequence where 1 PAX would Rifle Carry the block to the end of the cover and back while the other PAX just plank.  We would just stay there til all 4 PAX went.  YHC decided to go first, and took off running with the block in a Rifle Carry.  Giving chase was Nutria with the second block.  That’s not how it was supposed to go, but whatever.  We got back and Winehouse went.  Then Spiderman.  In just the time it took those two to get back, YHC was struggling to keep the plank.  Guess it’s a good thing Nutria followed and didn’t make it any longer.  Anyways, enough of that.  Back to square 1:

  • 12 x High Pulls (OYO)
  • 12 x Halos CW (OYO)
  • 12 x Halos CCW (OYO)
  • 12 x American Hammers w/Bell (OYO)

Our intermission this time was a Duck Walk to the “1st” sign and a Lunge Walk back.

The Time Warp not only taketh away, but it also giveth, as we had plenty of time for a 3rd set:

Then one last Waiter Carry with our bells, back down to the end of the cover with our Right hand and back with our Left hand.

And that was all the time we had.

Never fails.  After a round at Bulldog, I always realize I run too much.  Nutria & I made the trek to Floyd & Blackies to join the PAX from the Storm for some coffee.  Great start to the last week of 2023.

I’m Just Here for the Livermush

14 for a Bootcamp + Hal doing Hal things as YHC succumbed to a strong EH by the Site Q, knowing that the thickest slabs of livermush were waiting on the other side.  Here’s what I remember:

The Thang:

Staying put, we partnered up, and did some alternating partner work.  One partner held plank while the other did 10 reps.  Switch roles.  Then switch back for 9 reps, and continue on that way til we get down to 1 rep.

Block work today was “Nasty” 7s, which was a nod to JJ’s Annihilation Q.  Like 11s, there were exercises to do on both sides, but no counting down, just 7 reps every time.  Also, the dirty part was the Blockee in the middle both ways.  To make it Nasty, we just repeat for 7 minutes.  So not quite the same as the Nasty 11s, but same idea.

Highlight here was Seuss grabbing a full block.  Also, we left the blocks messier than we found them.  Anyways, short round of block work, probably could’ve been longer, but there were other and different fun things to do.

So the last set of stuff would be reverse suicides, with us starting with the far court, then working our way back.  At each court, we would do

before running back.  When finished, PAX would run a lap all the way around the tennis courts, then finish up with

  • 30 x CDDs (OYO)

As we waited for the Six, we cranked out another round of

  • 15 x Hip Slappers (IC)

It was so much fun, we did it again, with one quick change.  Instead of the Jungle Boys, we did

  • 10 x Mike Tysons (OYO)

at every court, starting at the far end and working our way back.  1 full lap at the end, and then another round of

  • 30 x CDDs (OYO)

And that was really all we had time for.  Mosey the short way back to the flag.  Time.

2023 Coconut Horse Festivus Ruck

Roscoe’s brainchild.  Developed on the frosty streets of Gastonia, NC somewhere between Union Rd and Robinwood Rd the sand got deep one day and there was an impromptu airing of grievances that would’ve made the late Frank Costanza proud (or Whoopee’s Sandy V Channel).  The notes were few, but the good times many from that day, and so when Roscoe brought it up again this year, we knew we needed to try to capture the magic again.  The rain in the forecast was a perfect backdrop, though in all honesty, last week was way worse.  7 grumpy old PAX got out of the fartsack and hit the streets at 0601 as YHC was busy putting on his makeup and you can’t rush perfection.  No runners, just we with bones to pick and 80 minutes to pick em.

The play by play is gone, but grievances included

  •  College Football Playoff
  • Guests at a party who overstay their welcome
  • Our old man bodies waking us up to post even when we fully intended on fartsacking
  • Octogenarians in the Oval Office
  • What shouldn’t be done on government property (and what should be done to those that do)
  • Menu anxiety
  • Smokers (people, not charcoal)
  • People who say “I shouldn’t be doing this” while eating their 3rd cupcake
  • The weather
  • The fact that this was a 5 mile ruck and not a 3 miler
  • Faulty sensors in turn lanes that don’t actually trip the traffic light
  • This movie starring Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon where the world is ending but it’s cool because we can watch Friends reruns
  • and many more that I know I’m missing

Light-hearted and good-natured.  We manufactured some superficial anger in the spirit of the holiday, but the grievances didn’t seem to be as deep-seated this year.

2 joined in dry as a bone for QSource and a talk about Compassion.  We talked Gary Sinise, but also that things are complicated.  It’s not as simple as to give a homeless guy $10 or not.  It’s almost like we have to take the time to listen to find out.  But can we be THE GUY for everyone with a problem?  But we should definitely be THE GUY for our Concentrica.  It was one of those QSources where the further we went into it, the more I realized I didn’t know, or at least, don’t do well.  F3, and specifically QSource, helps see those blind spots.  If you don’t have a group, in F3 or otherwise, that’ll hold you accountable for growing into the man the your family and your community need you to be, I challenge you to reach out to any PAX and they’ll help you get connected.

Radar’s Insatiable Thirst for Burpees

10 PAX today for a birthday beatdown where the Burpees just slowly added up, thanks to the input of one helpful PAX.  Here’s what I remember:

Slow crowd to get out of their cars this morning.  With one minute to go, guys started to get out of their cars and showed up to the flag looking like they were about to serve lunch detention.  It was only slightly worse.

The Thang:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

We prepaid repeatedly for trains that never came.  Looking for a run & gun style today, so we started weaving through the parking lot.

If YHC gets much older, the Q is going to pass out calling cadence.

Then took a quick lap around the Storm’s carpool dropoff, where YHC just took off expecting some pace out of the PAX.  They lagged and got dusted, enough so that they about got lost.  Is it a Q fail if the PAX take their sweet time and get lost in the process?  Probably.  Luckily, they saw YHC back in the middle of the traffic circle doing…

  • 20 x HR Merkins (OYO)

again.  That set was tougher.  Anyways, moving on.  To the Dora side of the school where the walls and concrete barriers are

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 30 x Dips (OYO)
  • 30 x Step Ups (OYO – count each step)

To the wall

  • Wall Sits
  • w/20 x Air Presses (IC)
  • w/20 x Marches (IC)

and then just because Radar wanted them

and then another request from Radar

  • 20 x Hip Slappers (IC)

(Why am I even writing this backblast when Radar was the Q?)

Next was some “Core-a” with 3 Core exercises and some running with partners.  The catch today is that the runners will mosey to the islands, then Jailbreak to the end of the parking lot, reverse directions, mosey to the islands and Jailbreak back to their partner.  Exercises were…

  • 100 x Freddie Mercuries
  • 200 x Flutter Kicks (Count Left Side)
  • 300 x LBCs

Back to the barriers for

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 30 x Dips (OYO)
  • 30 x Step Ups (OYO – count each step)

Back on the wall

  • w/10 x Air Presses (IC)
  • w/10 x Marches (IC)
  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

That was a lot of work, so it’s logical that time was running out at this point.  The stacked suicides that were planned will have to wait for another day, but we’d still get to run suicides.  Just not as many reps.

  • Repeato for 5 total sets of parking spaces

And I think that was all we had time for.  Probably another set or two of burpees in there, but nothing too stupid.  We got what we paid for.  Seuss and Tiger bailed on COT.  We pledged before we left.  We were there and left a mark this morning.

Moleskin:

A great start to a great day.  Pushed work down a rung or two today to join Watts Up and Anchorman for coffee at Floyd & Blackies.  That’s a couple HIM that keep me headed in the right direction.  Grateful for that 2nd F.

It was everything a 41st birthday should be.  Worked.  Spent time with my parents.  Went out to eat with my M & 2.0s.  Then called it a day.  Grateful for the simple things.

Kudos to Radar for a fine Q this morning.

What’s a Deep Sea Diver?

At least 6 F3 Gastonia PAX didn’t fartsack this morning, but I guess there were plenty that did.  Hate to see it.  In spite of a recent procedure on his 3rd knee, the Site Q still was able get up prior to 5 this morning and check in to make sure YHC was good to go.  Now that’s dedication.  But this isn’t what you or any of us came for.  You want to know what you missed.  So here’s what I remember…

The Thang:

  • 15 x SSH (IC)
  • 15 x Toy Soldiers (IC)
  • 15 x Goofballs (IC)
  • 15 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)

And we mosey around a couple buildings and come right back to the pavilion.  Up the steps (6 of them to be exact) and on our sixes for some core work:

  • 10 x Double Crunches (IC)
  • 10 x American Hamers (IC)
  • 10 x Crab Marches (IC)

Plank at the top of the steps.  The goal from here is to do 5 Merkins at each step going down, til we get to the bottom, then do 10 Mike Tysons there, then plank for the Six.

These Deep Sea Divers sound like fun, let’s do those.  Then 10 more Mike Tysons at the top.  So 5 Merkins at the bottom.  Climb one step with your feet.  5 more Merkins.  All the way to the top, then climb to the top with your hands for 10 more Mike Tysons.  My Soccer Arms were gassed.  Called another round of core just to get a breather before running again.

  • 10 x Double Crunches (IC)
  • 10 x American Hammers (IC)
  • 10 x Crab Marches (IC)

Then we were off to the big wall at FUMC, stopping at least 3 times along the way for:

  • 5 x Skater Hops (OYO – Each Leg)

YHC called Skater Hops with the intent that the PAX get a good full squat and jump out of it.  Still had dudes lookin like they were dancing. You v You I guess.

At the wall, we did “2 Minutes of Uncle”, where we partnered up and PAX switched back and forth between 2 exercises at their leisure for 2 minutes.  Hold on as long as you can, then call “Uncle” when you can’t take any more.  First up:

  • Wall Sits & Australian Mountain Climbers

Next up:

  • Crab Hold & Toe Touches

At this point, something that had died inside of YHC was expelled and the odor so bad that even Volt said something.  I never said why you’d say “Uncle”.

Round 3 was the worst.  2 minutes of just a straight wall sit.  Partners alternate Air Presses.  Coming off the wall, it was hard to even walk, but on we went to South St., stopping along the way for another 3 rounds of:

Then another round of core with:

Before ending the day with burpee suicides.  With time running short, we just did the burpees at the light poles and not back at home base.

Repeato til time was called on the workout.

Great push by the guys today.  Especially Timeframe, who posted Thursday morning, Thursday night, then Friday morning.  Killin it in December is tough, though technically there’s never a bad time to push the rock.

Thanks, SA for the opportunity to get out and for the wake up call.  Get that knee right and get some rest while you can, because you know nobody will give you a break once you’re healthy.

The Runs

0230 – YHC wakes up with a gut-busting pain.  Send a text to the Site Q, “20% chance I make it today.  Stomach.”  Alarm’s still set.  Back to sleep.

0350 – Alarm goes off.  Eh.  Never called out on a Q and not wanting to start now.  Also, the words of the immortal People’s Champ were ringing through my head from Midoriyama the night before.  For all the accolades, he might be most proud of being the record-holder as the only PAX (that we know of) to, well, soil himself at two different workouts.  Well, can’t do it twice if you don’t do it once.

0417 – Text to Site Q that YHC is gonna give it a go

0430 – Frantic search for all black clothes.  Worst case, at least they won’t see it.  If their noses aren’t stuffy, they’ll still know for sure, as the air will be a different kind of fresh.

0455 – Arrive on site to a big crowd at Ground Assault

0500 – 11 PAX say the pledge.  4 ruckers head out on the usual route.  5 runners launch the Catchy Named Route.  2 PAX wait.

0501 – Sargento arrives to run with Buckeye and Quiche

What happened from there is anybody’s guess.  We all put in miles and met back for COT.

Strong crowd of 12 for a cold Wednesday morning at Ground Assault.  Glad I didn’t spend the morning washing the sand out of… well, you know.
