Train for Chaos

8:1 Ruckers to runners on a post-Mortimer Sunday at the Coconut Horse, with another 3 (Stroganoff, Defib, Short Sale) for QSource making for a strong showing on a day when I’m sure it’d been easier to just stay in the Fartsack.  FNG on Daylight Savings Sunday too made for a good time as we welcomed BetaMax to the group.

It’s Q’s Choice at the Coconut Horse QSource, so YHC stuck to an old favorite – Bricks & Guardrails.  No notes were taken, so here’s what I remember:

Our goal is to continue to accelerate, and at the same time, life throws us, and there’s inevitable wrenches in the plan.  We can’t spend all our time being careful though and just avoiding mistakes.  As we careen down life’s highway, it’s important to lay the bricks that make up our guardrails.

Bricks are positive habits that are advantageous to ourselves, others, or both.  Examples of bricks include:

  • Posting
  • Maintaining a healthy diet
  • Journaling
  • Prayer
  • Reading
  • 2nd F opportunities

There are times in life when stress rises and we’re tested.  At these times, will we be the men our beliefs tell us to be?  The strength comes from support, and will be based on the groundwork we laid prior.  As stress goes up, support needs to too.  We should resist the urge to retreat and try to handle it on our own.  It’s at these times that the Shieldlock is vital, and the relationships we’ve built give us a boost and keep us strong when we need it.  We also benefit from resisting the urge to be selfish and finding a way to give back, even during hard times.

How can we help be a support in someone else’s guardrails?  By knowing them well enough to hold them accountable to their standard.  From QSource: “Enforcement requires the intercession of another person to measure one’s actual performance or behavior against the standard he previously agreed to set for it…. Without Enforcement, a man’s Blind Spots will lead him to continually lower his own standards to meet his own declining performance until both meet at the bedrock of his life.”  And it’s important to get back on track as quickly as possible.  In F3, we have this agreed upon standard of just posting.  If you haven’t seen a guy out lately, at the very least, you can hold him to that standard.  Then the better you know him, the more accurate and impactful your enforcement can be.

Finally, if we find ourselves decelerating, what do we do?

  • Reestablish fundamentals – In the course of accelerating, we take on a lot.  When we crest the peak and start down the other side, all those things that we juggled just fine before can get tough.  Make sure the basics are intact and build from there.  Keep an eye on your Concentrica.
  • Show up – It’s simple.  Our actions can take over when our head’s not in it.  Show up anyways.
  • Mistakes are inevitable.  Avoid the 2nd Mistake – If we mess something up – diet, Fartsacking, or anything else – it’s not a good thing, but it’s just a single mistake.  When we do it again, that’s the start of a bad habit.  Again, get back on track as quickly as possible.
  • Train for Chaos – No excuses.  If your acceleration and principles only hold up in ideal circumstances, they’re not worth a whole lot.  As much as we don’t want to admit it, most of our growth comes from chaos.  Stay aware in the storm, learn from it, and be better prepared for the next one.

So grateful for the opportunity to lead and the opinions shared by the PAX at the Horse during QSource today.

Big volunteer opportunities on the horizon, with Rice & Beans (Anchorman) on Tuesday, Food Ruck (BOS) Saturday and Dream Center (JJ) workout coming up by the end of March.  Contact the PAX leading those efforts for more details.

Thanks again for being the HIM and examples that you are.

First Good Sweat of 2024

10 men made it past the wreck on Dallas-Stanley Highway and put in work at Midoriyama.  Guessing there might have been some who wish they would’ve just gone home.  Here’s what I remember:

An early season girls soccer tournament brought out the traffic, but we stayed far away from all that.  For the most part.  Radar was right in the thick of it as a referee, but no COT = No Rep.  Adjustments were made to the weinke to stay out the road and away from the fields.  We wouldn’t have had time anyways.

The Thang:

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)

Grab blocks.

Original plan had us carrying to the soccer fields and stopping at each light pole, but we adjusted the warm up a little

  • 10 x WW3 Situps (Yeah, that’s more like it)
  • 10 x Oblique Crunches L (IC)
  • 10 x Oblique Crunches R (IC)

Short parking lot by the batting cages and turd shack.  Long ways.  Use a light pole as a guide.

  • Block Carry to light pole
  • 5 x Block Swings (OYO)
  • 10 x Bent Over Rows (OYO)
  • Block Carry back
  • 5 x Blocks Swings (OYO)
  • 10 x Bent Over Rows (OYO)
  • Repeato for a total of 3 down-and-backs

Slow start, but the locals knew we were there, as Wirenut brought the mumblechatter.

Cross the street to the long parking lot by the softball field which was conveniently vacant except for an old Chevy Lumina van (as far as you know) and an old dude on a lawnchair that in hindsight we should have EH’d to give Leppard some company.  Q Fail.

  • 10 x WW3 Situps (OYO)
  • 10 x Oblique Crunches L (IC)
  • 10 x Oblique Crunches R (IC)

Alright, so no clipboard for the routine, but there probably should have been, as the exercises and rep counts weren’t standard.  Blart made a Short Sale reference if that gives any clues as to the way the instructions went.  Truth is, the only one who needed to know was Broke, because the rest of the PAX were gonna be smelling my farts anyways and could just follow along.  Here’s what was so difficult:

5 Rounds total

  • Top of the Lot – 5 exercises – rep counts per round 5/10/15/10/5
    • Double Crunches w/block
    • American Hammers w/block
    • Pull throughs w/block (L+R=1)
    • OH Presses w/block
    • Curls w/block
  • Mosey to the bottom of the lot
  • Bottom of the Lot
    • 15 x Perfect Form Merkins
    • 25 x Flutter Kicks (Count Left Side Only)
  • Mosey back to the top of the lot
  • Repeato for 5 rounds total, adjusting the rep counts for the block work only and keeping the same reps at the bottom

So maybe it was confusing, but it was more awful to do than it was to understand.  Round 3 brought the faucet and YHC realized it was 70 degrees and sweat season again.  Was a total grinder and was glad to have the push of Broke and Wiki.  Finishing felt good, but we had to call it before everyone could get done to return the blocks.  Everyone pushed hard and got their money’s worth.

Between the pull throughs and the sweat, it felt good to leave our mark out there.  Here’s to pouring out a lot more sweat in 2024, especially at Midoriyama.  Thankful for the opportunity to lead this group today.

Hop on the Bus, Gus

10 runners ran at the Pub.  Armory route, so nobody can get lost.  The pace was quick, as the 5 mile paces were all 8:40 or lower.  Maybelline and Stroganoff ran off, but Sargento started moving and Whoopee did Whoopee things like run by you just to show you he can.  The bus showed up at the turnaround point and some PAX debated using public transportation.

We announced the announcements and prayed for Maybelline’s granddad, Sargento’s client, and others who are sick and suffering.

First run since race day.  Good to get the wheels turning again.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

D2D 2024 – Team Bedrock Bronchitis

The relay race is a staple in F3, and F3 Gastonia is no different.  Among the best of the relays is Dam to Dam.  It’s got the local convenience and small town atmosphere with no bells or whistles.  Just a bunch of F3 guys putting on an event for their friends.  As the race has grown over the years, they’ve done a great job of scaling it up and giving back to the local churches that make Dam to Dam what it is.  It’s always on the calendar, but this year was a little different, as I got curious about goin Ultra.

I got to training, running every chance I could with anyone I could run with, putting in a couple “3-a-days” and just trying to keep pushing.  It didn’t matter how far I went, it never felt like enough, as the 31.5 miles that was scheduled for the day loomed.

“If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.”  Life happens, and things don’t work out the way we expect, but that doesn’t mean they don’t work out.  Team dynamics changed, a lot more than expected, and my Ultra team became a 4-man team, with Ville to Ville runners prepping for a race 2 months out filling in the rest of the spots.

Legs were assigned:

  1. Flintstone
  2. Gumby
  3. Flintstone
  4. Blart
  5. Termite
  6. Gumby
  7. Flintstone
  8. Blart
  9. Flintstone
  10. Termite
  11. Flintstone
  12. Gumby

So the day of the race came.  Plenty of Q Fails along the way, as we had little preparation, printed maps, breakfast or coffee plans, etc.  You name it, we didn’t do it.  But what we did was show up.  2:00 AM – Wake up.  3:30 – Meet up in McAdenville launching in Termite’s truck.  5:30 – Arrival.  6:00 – Launch.  And just like that it was on.

The day went quickly, and it was 2 weeks ago, so this backblast is way late (another Q fail), but here are the things I remember:

  • Gumby is a monster.  He crushed his 3rd leg, running a 7:48 pace for 3+ miles with the last quarter mile under 7:00.
  • There’s not a better guy on the planet than Blart.  He was the one who held us all together and did all the little things – driving, navigating, staying ready with a joke, and just generally aware of what needed to be done all along the way.
  • Termite was clutch, joining the team the week of the race, offering a vehicle, driving, and taking the longest leg.  He wandered off a lot less than expected, but nobody had a better time than Termite.  He showed up smiling and left smiling.
  • The burgers at the finish line were great as always, but don’t sleep on crinkle cut fries.  They kept them hot the whole time too.
  • After my last marathon, Golddigger mentioned to me that in those distances, you go through phases, and if something hurts, it’s just a phase.  You learn what to pay attention to.  I didn’t have my fastball on the day, and the miles were more of a grind than I wanted, especially early, but as the day wore on, I kind of figured it out and at the end of the day, with the help of my teammates, we got it done.
  • I didn’t have a goal for a pace, just to finish, but as the day wore on, I realized I hadn’t walked, so I figured that was the goal.  I was able to finish my legs without walking a step, so that felt like something.

We didn’t win the race.  We didn’t see any other Gastonia team, finishing probably 2 hours after they did.  We ran.  And drove.  And pissed in urinals at the churches.  But everyone stepped up and we did the thing, and that’s what it’s about.  You never know how it’s going to go, but that’s the point.  There’s a little discomfort, but a lot of comfort in knowing you’re in it together, and you’ll find a way to make it to the burgers at the end.  A huge shout out to my teammates – Blart, Gumby, and Termite – who made it a great day.  And to all those who spent time logging miles, as that’s where the real work is done.  And of course to Virus, whose razor-sharp memory was the impetus for the Ultra try and whose push has got me through, from early days and bear crawling bootcamps to 20 mile runs and whatever comes next.

Completely Stupid and Utterly Pointless.  If you don’t know, ask, and get involved.  It’s livin at it’s finest.

Not Your Usual Suspects

5 Ruckers at Diablo where YHC took the Q after a bit of a Diablo hiatus.  We hit the Riverwood Plantation loop and then a loop down in South Pines.  2 miles on the nose, stopping 4 times for:

  • 10 x American Hammers w/Ruck (OYO)
  • 10 x Double Crunches w/Ruck (OYO)
  • 10 x Chest Press/Pullovers w/Ruck (OYO)

Last round was 15 of each, and with a little time left, Tube called 10 Windshield Wipers and YHC called 10 Heels to Heaven.

Bandit and Scrat were not there, but likely for different reasons.

Stretching, no Hunchback

6 PAX braved the nearly freezing temperatures and perhaps a little frost on the car in the morning to do some stretches, throw around some kettlebells, and even some work on the track at Bulldog this morning.  It would’ve been 7 PAX if Hunchback would have been there.  Here’s what I remember:

YHC got out of the car and yelled “One Minute”, and even then Nutria pulled in after that.  Game on, but a little different today.

Warm Up Stretches:

A thorough stretch was called for after a Tesla beatdown at Life Line, so YHC obliged and put a round of stretching on the Weinke

  • Front Bend
  • Legs Crossed Side Bend L
  • Legs Crossed Side Bend R
  • Seated Back Twists L
  • Seated Back Twists R
  • Something where you put your feet together and try to bend forward but that didn’t work for any of us
  • Some Tesla Stretches
  • Ankle Circles in all directions
  • Swinging Legs Forward
  • Swinging Legs Sidewards
  • Arm Circles Forward, Backwards, Large & Small

You really should have been there.  But if you weren’t I’m sure there was a good reason.

Kettlebell Circuit (40 seconds AMRAP/15 seconds between):

  • Halos (CW & CCW)
  • One-handed Curl Presses (L & R)
  • One-armed Bent Over Rows (L & R)
  • Squeezes
  • Tricep Extensions
  • Kraken Burpees (no KB, but none needed)

And some Mary in Cadence:

  • 15 x Toe Touches (IC)
  • 15 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 15 x Penguins (IC)

Next to the track for a Modified Murph-ish partner routine:

  • 1 Lap around the track
  • 100 Combined Merkins
  • 200 Combined Squats
  • 300 Combined LBCs
    • Completed in 5 synchronized sets of 10/20/30 with partners
  • 1 Lap around the track

Nutria and Winehouse went out fast.  Spiderman and Stagecoach were next.  Tube and YHC mall walked.  Q Fail as Tube and YHC ditched Nutria and Winehouse who were out to pick up the Six, because the Q knew we needed the time to get in another round.  It’s cool, we counted off, and they caught up.  If we would have had one more PAX, it would’ve been awkward though with there being odd numbers.  Thank goodness we didn’t have one more PAX.

Repeato earlier work:

Kettlebell Circuit (40 seconds AMRAP/15 seconds between):

  • Halos (CW & CCW)
  • One-handed Curl Presses (L & R)
  • One-armed Bent Over Rows (L & R)
  • Squeezes
  • Tricep Extensions
  • Kraken Burpees (no KB, but none needed)

And finally, time left for some Mary in Cadence:

  • 15 x Toe Touches (IC)
  • 15 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 15 x Penguins (IC)

And that was time.  Just how we drew it up.  Anyone who missed it really missed out on a good one.

Announcements:

  • Bulldog moving to Thursdays and Diablo Sammich moving to Tuesdays starting the first full week of March
  • 2nd F Lunch – Pita Wheel in BELMONT Wednesday 2/21
  • QSchool – 3/2 @ Gashouse

Prayer Requests:

  • Turtleman
  • Anchorman

Enjoyed it this morning, men.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

Hawaiian Chicken

Eleven was the number on this fine Wednesday at the Ricky Bobby, as 3 members from Team 11 showed up for YHC as the Q.  No 11s were done as part of this Beatdown.  Here’s what I remember:

FNG in the group today, so we were all on our best behavior.  Thanks to Hot Corner for the heads up, because otherwise, we were running to the entrance of Cramer Woods.  YHC is a benevolent Q.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

To the track

  • 1 lap – Slow

Everyone’s slow is different, but we stayed pretty much together.

Quick work OYO:

  • 30 x Dips
  • 20 x Derkins
  • 10 x Step-ups (Each Leg)

The next lap was a little different.

  • Slow to the soccer goal
  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • Medium Pace down the straightaway
  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • Jailbreak back to the start

Defib and Nutria led the way, but good work by all.

Round 2:

  • 30 x Dips
  • 20 x Derkins
  • 10 x Step-ups (Each Leg)

Back to the flag, but not for COT (“That was the quickest 45 minutes.”)

Quick round of Core Work:

  • 10 x Star Boys (OYO)
  • 10 x Heels to Heaven (IC)
  • 10 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 10 x Penguins (IC)

Jump ropes came out next, and we did some partner work.

  • Partner 1
    • 15 x Squats (OYO)
    • 15 x Merkins (OYO)
    • 15 x Flutter Kicks (OYO – Count 1 side)
  • Partner 2
    • Jump Rope til Partner 1 is done with the exercise
  • Switch
  • Repeato until both partners have cycled through 3 times

Mumblechatter was going on, but YHC had the music loud enough and couldn’t hear.  Buckshot, Orangeman & Tesla were there, so I’m sure it was good.

Back to the Core:

  • 15 x Star Boys (OYO)
  • 15 x Heels to Heaven (IC)
  • 15 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 15 x Penguins (IC)

Then a Zombie Apocalypse to the next spot.  For those who missed it, the Zombie Apocalypse is

  • Partner 1
    • Run a distance (in this case the fourth pole on the right)
    • 3 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
    • Run back and swap with Partner 2
  • Partner 2
    • Zombie Walk (Lunge-Lunge-Squat) til Partner 1 gets back
  • Repeato til you get to the end

Hot Corner crushed the Zombie Walk, to the delight of his partner, the FNG.

10 minutes left.  Right on schedule.  But 10 minutes goes quick.  For the finisher, YHC brought back a little move we did at Folsom where one partner runs a distance while the other holds plank.  Easy, right?  Well we mixed it up, so the first hold was High Plank, the second was an elbows bent halfway Plank, and last was a “balls to the ground” plank where the arms are fully bent, but there’s still space (though not much) between you and the ground.  The send one was probably the toughest.  Defib talked YHC through the last round, with Orangeman as proctor.  It was rough, and thanks to Cheesesteak for running hard to get YHC through it.

0614, only time for a mosey back.  The 20 round of Core will have to be OYO today.  That’s all we had time for.

We said the pledge and started with announcements, when Defib recognized YHC’s lack of explanations on the day and stepped up to let the FNG know what we were really doing out there at 0530 in the morning.  It’s more than a workout, and there’s strength to be gained.  HIM step up and lead, and Defib’s as good as they come.  Welcome to the group, Hei Hei.

There are no bad days at the Ricky Bobby.  Heck, there are no bad days in The Gloom.  Grateful for another opportunity to lead a long overdue Q at the Rick.

Yabba Dabba Doo

Tesla Names an FNG

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before.  FNG enters the circle, tells his life story, Tesla chimes in, and everyone… approves?  And we go with that name?  All parties are satisfied?  You just never know with Tesla.  There are few in our region that keep us all guessing like he does.

17 bootcampers and 2 ruckers put in work on the first day of Pushing Rocks 2024.  There’s that same kind of excitement that this year might be the year that your team turns it around and wins it all.  Or at least they’re competitive.  Or maybe they post at least once in March?  Or the offensive line blocks a little bit?  Or we just win a game?   Well at least the worst record gets the number 1 pick next year, right?  Sorry, what were we talking about?

Ah right, we’re excited, probably just about a Flintstone Q at The Goat, but maybe it’s Challenge season.  And my teammate brought an FNG, so even better.  Disclaimer, then some dumb stuff as follows:

The Thang:

  • 10 x Goofballs (IC)
  • 10 x Burpees (OYO)
  • 10 x Monkey Humpers (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

Short mosey to the stop sign for a simple:

Triple Nickel:

  • Hillbillies at the bottom of the hill
  • Mike Tysons at the top

All just part of the warm up

A brief meander in lieu of a Ten Count, and a mosey around the building to the bottom of the steps

  • 1 minute Plank

YHC brought a Form Police badge today to make sure the PAX’s first points weren’t easy ones.

Next was this circuit:

  • Buy in: 10 x Squats (OYO)
  • Cadence work:
    • American Hammers x 10
    • Flutter Kicks x 10
    • Toe Touches x 10
    • Shoulder Taps x 10
    • Merkins x 10 (My “down”)
  • Round reset: Run a lap around the Cramerton shops and plank for the Six
  • Each round increase the cadence work by 1

We kept a pace through this.  Little transition time, just rolling through the exercises.

We stopped after the “11” round and held plank to tell the FNG about the 5 Core Principles and 5 other things they need to know.  Wise words were shared about fellowship, our mission, our credo, and Tesla, and who knows what else.  Dad jokes got mixed in too.  And probably a few “That’s what she saids” for good measure.

Anyways, after the 13 round, it seemed like we’d had enough, so we switched it up.

Partner work:

  • Bottom of the stairs:
    • 10 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
  • Top of the stairs:
    • 10 x Booyah Merkins (w/Partner)
  • Run the lap around the building
  • Repeato until time called

A train came in the distance:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

and it eventually got closer, but we already paid.

My partner was Blackout, who pushed hard the whole time.  Kudos to the group of 3 who did Booyah Merkins somehow.

We wrapped up and headed back to the flag for Tiger’s Protractors and Stinky Bird’s American Hammers.

And that was it.

Welcome Todd Smith, better known in The Gloom as Seasick for his work with the Coast Guard.

Had a blast y’all.  Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

I’d Grab It If I Could Find It

Shrinkage ran rampant through the PAX on a frosty Saturday morning as a number of PAX came and went, but 11 were there for the bootcamp, and here’s what I remember:

YHC planned for a cold day, and it was just that, though maybe a touch warmer than expected.  Still, there was plenty of sand below Tesla’s favorite line, and we all complained about it.

YHC ran with Alma Mater before the bootcamp, and he pulled a Quiche and stuck around for warmup.  Tiger, Breaker, and some others got out there to get in some early miles too.  Part of the Core Principles is to just get out in the elements.  Safety is important (it is third after all), but comfort isn’t, so glad to see guys pushing the rock in the cold weather.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Don Qs (IC)
  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Toy Soldiers (IC)
  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Gravel Pickers (IC)
  • 10 x SSH (IC)

Mosey to the long parking lot on Glenway across from the train station.

  • 5 x Burpees (just because I guess)

So YHC described the routine as like 11’s, but instead of adding to 11, we’d just start at 10 and work our way down on both ends, until we got to 5, then go back up.  So reps were: 10-9-8-7-6-5-6-7-8-9-10 at both ends.  In the middle, a brief pause both ways, but it wasn’t “Dirty” because we did squats not burpees.  So it wasn’t anything like what was advertised:

  • Run towards the far end of the lot
  • Stop halfway for
    • 5 x Squats (OYO)
  • Run to the end
    • 10 x CDDs (OYO)
    • 10 x Double Crunches (OYO)
  • Run back towards the near end of the lot
  • Stop halfway for
    • 5 x Squats (OYO)
  • Run to the beginning
    • 10 x Merkins (OYO)
    • 10 x American Hammers (OYO)
  • Repeato for the rep counts listed above

It was a grind and helped us stay warm, but before you know it, half the workout was over, and all that happened was our nuts froze over, except for Jane Fonda and Tesla.  There’s were dragging the ground in shorts in the cold weather.

Mosey next to The Bunker for a tornado of sorts.  As cold as it was, we were all there for some reason, and it wasn’t necessarily to get faster or show off our strength.  We were there because someone else needed us to be there.  We show up for each other.  So there was still work to be done, but we’d spend some time showing how much we know about each other.

The routine:

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)
  • Call on 2 PAX to each call an exercise in cadence
  • After the exercises, we say everything we know about each of the two PAX that called the exercises – family, kids, hobbies, job, and anything else we found to discuss
  • After they heard all we had to say, it was their turn to offer something we didn’t say
  • YHC called either 5 x Imperial Walkers or 5 x Hillbillies IC
  • Run a lap and a quarter around the Bunker
  • Repeato until we got through all the PAX

With an odd number, YHC was last, and we waited until we got to the flag for mine.

I shared with the guys that the inspiration was just in spending time with my mom.  After over 60 years of a life devoted mostly to caring for others, she is in a spot physically where she can’t be out much.  She said the lack of interaction can make you feel invisible, and it really goes against our needs to just be seen.  So much of what we experience as Sadclowns and men who isolate ourselves is a lack of connection, and that same invisible feeling.  That, among other reasons, has to be why the Fifth Core Principle exists.  To see and be seen.  To be heard and to listen.  To create bonds big enough that The Sifter of life has them catch and stay rather than just pass on through.

Every man who showed up today realized that there are people listening and watching, who know things about them that they may not even know they’d mentioned, and can see blind spots that maybe they themselves can’t.  I can’t tell you how impressed I was at the PAX today who rattled off fact after fact like it was a final exam that they’d been up all night studying for, when it was actually a pop quiz.

The line blurred between the end of the workout and the word and message, but it didn’t matter at that point.  We were frozen and joined by 2 runners who were putting in long miles.  We were also joined by Bruce, who just showed up at COT.  Turns out he knew we would be out there and just wanted to see what we were doing.  Hopefully he will make it back out and we can give him a stupid nickname.

I’m thankful for this group and the HIM who invest in each other in every way they can.  Proud to be one of y’all.

The Derecho after the Storm

Respects won the day, as 9 runners and 3 ruckers posted at Ground Assault for the Derecho route.  This route, named after our first running AO, takes PAX up the hill in front of the Storm, and across the campus of the Storm, spending ample time on the hills around the Storm AO.

From our F3 Gastonia Historian, Roscoe: “Derecho was started on 2/26/2016 as a running AO, the region’s first running AO.  It ended around January 2017 due to low(ish) attendance with the idea to move to Martha’s House Wednesdays to have a running workout parallel to the main bootcamp that day.”

I just remember posting once and running that stupid hill over and over and over again.

Anyways, the wind stuck around, Virus and Roscoe are fast, Alma Mater was late.  All in a good day.

Moleskin:

One year in, and Ground Assault is going strong.  The strength lies in the men that consistently post, specifically Virus, who has done a great job as Site Q, Anchorman and Dr. Seuss, who developed the ruck route and the standard for rucking at Ground Assault, and Gavel and Termite, who have been there nearly every week since the beginning.  It’s a good run, with trains as wild cards that will ultimately determine when you get back, and good timing for a potential early Coffeeteria on a weekday.  If insomnia hits on a Tuesday night/Wednesday morning, come give it a shot.  Not even The Sword wraps up earlier.

Grateful for the opportunity to lead a fine group of old guys.
