Eye Contact

13 Pain Labbers got in some Yoga, a couple circles, some partner work, a Gumby ripoff, Tom Petty, Bob Seger, the Stones, and some uncomfortably long stares between PAX.  Here’s what I remember:

We gathered all our many bells, blocks, and Thor hammers to the landscaped wall right in front of the handicapped parking, because that was the ideal setting for today because the Q said so.  Stroganoff warmed us up… kind of.  A little more stretching would be nice:

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Gravel Pickers (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • Sitting Figure 4 Back Stretches

First Circle was:

Ring of Merkins

  • All PAX hold plank (form police was on it) and one at a time do
    • 1 Merkin, then
    • 2 Merkins, then
    • 3 Merkins

Easy enough.  Heihei and Mayor got into this staring contest during their Merkins.  It’s like the rest of us weren’t even there.  Grab the bells next, for some slow cadence counts of:

  • 10 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 10 x Chest Press / Pullovers (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

Good form and slow core work is where it’s at.

Next we did like a Dora-Lite, where 1 partner runs and the other stays and does exercises, then flapjack, then repeato and flapjack again, getting 2 full rounds of each exercise before moving to the next one.  Exercises were:

  • Dips
  • Step Ups
  • Squeezes (Standing Chest Press)
  • Double Crunches
  • 1-armed Bent Over Rows

The running was modest, but not nothing.  And the guys put in the work.  The PainLab crowd knows how to modify, but it’s modify as necessary, and the guys stepped up to the plate.  The next round of running had a little more teeth, but before that, another round of:

  • 10 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 10 x Chest Press / Pullovers (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

Quick Moleskin:  There’s a number of good Qs in our region who can put together a grinder of a workout that tests your endurance while hammering the same thing over and over again.  Everyone has their favorites, and the longer I do this thing, the more I like those workouts that begin with me thinking “You’ve got to be kidding me”, but as the thing grinds on, I realize that I’ve got it and I’ll finish it and be smoked and smiling at the end.  Anyways, if the Qs you were thinking about didn’t include Gumby, then you need to catch a Gumby Q on the rare occasion that it can be caught.  When trying to put together the steak to today’s PainLab Beatdown entree, I kept coming back to this workout from Gumby, that took about the whole time, but was awful and awesome all at the same time.  There were 3 things I wanted to do, and keep it simple, and I wanted to run, so here’s what I came up with.  Gumby’s was better:

5 Rounds

  • 25/20/15/10/5 Reps
    • Curls
    • Swings
    • Merkins
  • 1/2/3/4/5 Laps
    • Run – Around both sculptures
    • Walk – To handicapped spaces & back

Push the weight.  YHC brought the 53 pound kettlebell, and at least 3 PAX got in some work with it.  The run wasn’t long, but it added up.  1.8 miles in a PainLab workout on the day is quite a bit.

As the leaders wrapped up, they joined Top Hat for:

  • American Hammers
  • Mike Tysons
  • LBCs

We took the coupons back to our vehicles, and went back to the flag for one more circle

Ring of Boxcutters:

  • All PAX hold 6 inches and one at a time do:
    • 1 Boxcutter
    • 2 Boxcutters

And that was all YHC could do holding the 6 inches.  But the bootcampers showed up, and we couldn’t just StarGaze, so we finished up with

  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

And that was time.

Moleskin:

I bought a bunch of kettlebells from Carolina Fitness Equipment right when we opened up the Bunker and I got tired of swinging a ruck plate.  Woody (Remember him?  Heard there’s been a couple sightings in the Gloom lately) and Rudolph both told me that a 35 pound kettlebell was what I needed, and that I might think it’s too much, but to trust them.  They were right, but I bought ’em all.  Step ups in sizes from 18 to 54 pounds, just because I didn’t know, and someone told me that F3 was free, and I figured I could justify spending the money.  Anyways, the 54 pound kettlebell just sat in my building for 2 years before I took it to a workout once and Nutria saw it and wanted to take it home.  Fast forward, I got it back, and since I’ve been pushing a little more weight lately, have been bringing it around, and wouldn’t you know I can throw it.  It’s not any easier than it used to be, but time happens and the sweat and work we put in pay off in what we can do now that we couldn’t.  Don’t forget that, and don’t get comfortable.  Let’s keep pushing, because what’s impossible now will be possible later.

Thankful for another opportunity to lead.

A Tardy Q and a Blown Weinke

7 PAX somehow found their way through the rat maze to find the cheese in the middle, as it seemed like every road led to a dead end and every traffic light was out.  The cheese was Limburger.  Here’s what I remember:

YHC left with 27 minutes to get to Midoriyama for the Q, and somehow had a funny feeling all wasn’t going to go according to plans.  First up, Dallas-Stanley Highway was closed at the Dallas side, so YHC took the alternate route, expecting to go Highway 7.  Halfway down Highway 7, the road was closed again, and the new route had the Q arriving at 5:36.  A quick call to the Site Q, and the early shift was covered with a warm up, and one last parting request of “Oh, and have the guys grab some blocks.”

So out of my chariot and straight onto the field to lead the action, and it was on.  A couple quick runs to get the legs loosened up, and

  • 10 x Imperial Walker Squats (IC)
  • 5 x Burpees (OYO)

and then we circled back, grabbed the blocks, and went to the lower lot to finish the workout YHC had planned a couple weeks ago, but was too ambitious with time, and didn’t even come close to getting to the Main Event.  So here we go:

The Main Event (15 Minute AMRAP)

  • 15 x Skinny Block Merkins (leave the block long ways while holding the sides and doing Merkins – like a Diamond Merkin)
  • 15 x Windshield Wipers with the legs arching up and over the block, then arching back counting as 1 rep
  • 15 x Tricep Extensions
  • 15 x Block Swings
  • 15 x Pretzel Crunches L
  • 15 x Pretzel Crunches R
  • 15 x Block Split Squats L (a Bulgarian Split Squat using the block turned vertically for the back leg)
  • 15 x Block Split Squats R
  • Run to the end of the lot and back

At some point, the wind picked up (not like Wednesday) and the Weinke blew away, and Oompa let me know that my Weinke just got blown.  Speaking of blown, the bleachers by the horseshoe pit got lifted up and through the fence during Wednesday’s storm.  Lots and lots of damage out that way.

We pushed into the 4th round, but that was plenty, and there was more to do.  Leftover cole slaw wasn’t sitting well.  If it was July, YHC might’ve had a Spew & Q.  Great time to work the abs.

  • 15 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 15 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 15 x Toe Touches (IC)
  • 15 x American Hammers (IC)

Last thing was a simple one, but a burner all the same, with Elevens:

  • 10 x Thrusters
  • 1 x Mike Tyson

Not dirty, because there was already enough dirt built in on this one.  Defib led the way, and was gunning to lap Slaw.  Slaw was having none of it.  YHC and Purple Haze stayed together and brought up the Six.

Blocks back to the pallet

Time for a little more ab work if we hurry

  • 10 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 10 x American Hammers (IC)

And that was time.

Moleskin:

Crazy how we take so much for granted.  There’s been a lot of power out this week, but even just traffic lights, and the driving chaos and crashes that resulted from people on the roads who think the rules don’t apply to them.  If we all always just do whatever we want, it’ll be crazy.  We’re better when we look out for each other.  Thank you to each and every person who keeps the lights on, the streets safe, our hearts beating, our veggies picked, our prayers lifted, and all the little (but big) things that make our society what it is.

Grateful to for the opportunity to lead (for 39 minutes anyways)

Bright Lights

The classic Coconut Horse loop was vacant again, as we had 4 ruckers and a modified route runner at the Horse this morning.  With race season over after yesterday’s Tobacco Road Relay, I guess the runners are all licking their wounds (YHC included).

QSource today was on “The Law of the Process” from John Maxwell’s 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership, and there were a lot of good takes.  Whoopee and Defib joined choosing to give the legs a break after a long day running the day before.  Key points from the chapter:

  • Investing in growth is a daily process, and we don’t get 50 year results in 50 minutes
  • Events are great, but processes are transformational
  • Teddy Roosevelt may have had the biggest stones.  Once, he was shot prior to a speech, but insisted on delivering the one-hour speech with a broken rib and a bullet in his chest.
  • To grow leaders in your organization, find opportunities to lead in small ways.  As they show their capable, give them greater opportunities.
  • Consistency is the key

One lesson that showed up again that always seems to hit home is about being prepared.  As quoted in the book from Benjamin Disraeli, “The secret of success in life is for a man to be ready for his time when it comes.”  But another quote from Joe Frazier with a different spin is the one that got to me today:

“You can map out a fight plan or a life plan, but when the action starts, you’re down to your reflexes.  That’s where your road work shows.  If you cheated on that in the dark of the morning, you’re getting found out now under the bright lights.”

See those “Bright Light” moments are coming, and who we are in The Gloom, and on a Tuesday afternoon at work, or a Sunday evening with our families, all of that stuff matters.  It’s not a pressure, so much as an urgency.  Because if we’re men of action and we don’t cheat or take the easy way out, we’ll be as ready as we can be for our time when it comes.

We have to give our reflexes a fighting shot of getting us through in bright light situations, and it comes with preparation.  Sometimes, like a relay or a job interview or our kids leaving to go off to college, we get some warning about when our time is coming.  We’d be foolish or short-sighted to be unprepared in these situations, and yet it happens because our lives are so full.  A lot of times though, we don’t get to know when the action is going to start and the bright lights shine on us.  With preparation through hard work, building and supporting others, and a little bit of faith, we can get through.

The connections and clarity from being a part of a group that cares about how we’re all living are so valuable to me.  I appreciate all of your support.

Pattycake

A gorgeous Midoriyama Spring day was defecated on by a ragtag bunch with promises of blocks that didn’t come, a never-ending set of Al Gores, and a few Mike Tysons to keep it interesting.  Here’s what I remember:

Alternate disclaimer today:  I’m not a professional.  Doesn’t matter.  Do what I say.

The Thang:

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbilly Walkers (IC)
  • 7 x Cherry Pickers (on request from Blart – his Cadence)
  • 10 x Peter Parkers (IC)
  • 10 x Parker Peters (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)

Ran around the parking lots a little to loosen up, then began our first set of:

  • 10 x Mike Tysons (OYO)
  • 10 x Heels to Heaven (OYO)

Next, we split into 2 groups for an Indian Run.  The man in the back does 3 x Jungle Boy Squats, then runs to pass the group.  The destination was Dog Park Hill.  YHC got ambitious and switched groups about halfway through, and the whole thing fell apart.  Q Fail.  Arriving at Dog Park Hill was a present:

  • 15 x Mike Tysons (OYO)
  • 15 x Heels to Heaven (OYO)

Dog Park Hill brough a little Lazy Dora, where there was a combination of reps & holds, and after all the reps were complete of each exercise, partners ran together up Dog Park Hill and back before starting the next exercise.  We left today’s Lazy Dora open-ended, so groups could decide how many reps to do before switching.  Wiki, Trees, and YHC just went to failure.  Here’s what we did:

  • 100 x Merkins / 6 Inches
  • 200 x Squats / Al Gore (Brutal)
  • 300 x LBCs / Plank

Surviving the 200 round was the challenge, and then the hill run afterwards was rough, but we made it.  The whole thing took a lot longer than expected, and it became clear that the weinke wouldn’t be finished, so Leppard toted around his gloves for nothing.

Close enough to time to head back already, so we started around the soccer fields, but stopped shortly after for the next set of:

  • 20 x Mike Tysons (OYO)
  • 20 x Heels to Heaven (OYO)

and this is where Slaw and Wiki started playing pattycake with their Heels to Heaven reps.  Just when you think you’ve seen it all.

We moseyed back to the long stretch of light poles leading back to the flag, and decided it’d be a good time to lunge walk.

  • Lunge Walk 1 light pole
  • Run 2 light poles

all the way back to the flag.  Plenty of traffic to keep things interesting.

Wouldn’t want to miss an opportunity to get in another round of:

  • 25 x Mike Tysons (OYO)
  • 25 x Heels to Heaven (OYO)

We got back with a few minutes to spare and did a round of Mary.  Everyone got involved except for YHC & Blart who blew his on Cherry Pickers in the Warm Up.

And that was all we had time for today.  Good group with a good push and good weather.  And another half a weinke for next time.

Looking forward to another season of Midoriyama heat.

Be Alert & of Sober Mind

7 men got their week started off right with some work at the Sword (or somewhere close enough that they could just walk to COT).

The Word today came from 1 Peter Chapter 4 where we talked about having “spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do” and that it was time to “be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray”.

Key verse here is verse 8: “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”  This is in line with the Greatest Commandment of “Love God & Love Others”.  Seem like the most important thing is to love others and give what we have.

Thankful for another opportunity to lead.

Masters Division

Masters Thursday starts a 4-day holiday weekend for many, but today wasn’t a picnic for the 5 HIM who put in work at Bulldog.  Here’s what I remember:

YHC led off with the pledge and a warm up, then proceeded to talk about the Masters theme.

“Masters athletes are typically 35 years or older.  World athletics rules define masters athletics as starting at age 35 for both men and women.”

And there we have it.  We all qualify as Masters athletes, so outside of the warmup, we’re going to use 3s, 5s, and 35s.

The Thang:

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • Tesla Stretches
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 1 lap around the parking lot

First set of 5 x Burpees (OYO)

  • Plank – 35 seconds

Routine #1 (Round 3)

Routine #4:  5 x 7s

5 Rounds of:

  • 7 x Kettlebell Swings (OYO)

Routine #1 (Round 5)

For once in YHC’s career as a Q, we finished early, but with the “35” theme, we had an opportunity for some unique Mary, and the PAX obliged

  • 35 x Six Shooters (IC – Orangeman)
  • 35 x Mountain Climbers (IC – Clavin)

And that was it.

No doubt Orangeman won money on the Masters.  We all got our money’s worth.

Grab a bell and be here next week.

Salty Salt

5 of us, all runners for once, at The Sword, as we were all fighting something, whether battling the mentals or just trying to keep up with a 17 year-old and a Slawbag.

Verse for the day is Matthew 5:13: “You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt loses it’s saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

A few things:

  1. Pointing out the obvious, but salt has to be salty.  Otherwise it’s not salt.
  2. Salt can lose its saltiness only by being covered up by things that aren’t salt.
  3. Work to keep from being covered up, especially by things that don’t matter.
  4. Be Salty Salt.

Happy to have Westside there after the Spartan.  That HIM always has good stuff to add to the conversation and is as sharp mentally as he is swole physically.

Another great way to start a Monday

Dirty Diablo

A solid crowd of 6 knuckleheads  and a Scrat did “the Teeter route backwards”.  Or was it forwards?  We never knew.

A classic 2.5 mile EC Route at Martha’s, manifested in the mind of the legendary Dirt himself, repurposed for ruckers seeking something fresh.

We also did:

  • 10 x Thrusters (OYO)
  • 10 x Double Crunches (OYO)
  • 10 x American Hammers (OYO)

before we left and again halfway.

Solid work and solid company.

Gotta Grab a Grinder

3 members of Team 10 and 1 from Team 11 put in work at the Bulldog on a fine Thursday during Spring Break.

There were kettlebells and dumbbells and side planks and 6 inches and planks and running around islands and core work and a modified Wolfpack Grinder to get ready for the game.

4 years in and I finally lost a Weinke and had a bout of amnesia that kept me from remembering the details of the workout.  I just remember the name I was going to give the backblast.  In asking those who were there, here’s what they remember:

“Lost the weinke?  Kettlebell swings and things.  Dora around the islands.  Mosey to the track and back.”

“3 workouts by the benches and the 4th workout was walking with dumbbells to the end of the street and back, then rotate.  Heels to Heaven, Big Boys, and Dips maybe?”

“We carried dumbbells, did some stuff, then did other stuff.”

“Can’t talk now, my kid’s playing his instrument with his meat stick.”

Hate to see it.

Burn the Ship

21 was the number at Tequila Sunrise for no other reason than a typical Friday.  YHC had been chewing on some things and brought blocks to throw and ropes to jump.  Here’s what I remember:

The Thang:

Disclaimer to start, and a short mosey, avoiding the speedbumps (but probably 20 minutes late, right Breaker Breaker?), and back to the blacktop

  • 10 x Hillbillies (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 10 x SSH (IC)

1 lap around the track, picking up speed around the second turn, then back to the blacktop

We counted off, but YHC got thrown off by the 2 ruckers, so we scrapped the plan for groups and just let the guys get in groups of 3, which is probably how it should’ve gone all along.  YHC just overthought that one.

The concept of the day is simple.  Groups of 3.  1 group member leaves to go do something as the timer, the others stay and do AMRAP of what’s called.  3 stations for each round, and everyone rotates through all 3 stations.  Don’t worry, wasn’t complicated.  Just easier to do than explain.

Round 1:

  • Partner 1 – Jump Rope (AMRAP)
  • Partner 2 – Alternate 10 x Flutter Kicks & 10 x Freddie Mercuries (AMRAP)
  • Timer – 4 Corners w/Blockees on the blacktop
    • Corner 1 – 1 x Blockee
    • Corner 2 – 2 x Blockees
    • Corner 3 – 3 x Blockees
    • Corner 4 – 4 x Blockees
    • Carry the block from corner to corner

So Partners 1 & 2 do as many reps as possible while Partner 3 finishes the 4 corners.  When Partner 3 gets back, he jumps in on one of the exercises while another partner grabs the block and becomes the timer doing Blockee 4 Corners.  The other partner just switches exercises.

In between rounds, we cranked out a little core work with:

  • 10 x Double Crunches (IC)
  • 10 x Penguins (IC)

We didn’t run much today by design.  Whereas most bootcamps, we spend time running from place to place just to do exercises in a different location, today we talked.  YHC has been digging in a little lately to try to start to understand the root of change, and wanted to share.  First round went something like this:

Acceleration is just the F3 term for “getting better” and the idea is that we’re never just staying the same, we’re accelerating or decelerating.  The seed of acceleration, the keys to growth, are intrinsic in nature.  Nobody else can make you want to grow.  That’s something you have to want for yourself.  So what are they?  We explored this morning with a ship at sea as the backdrop.

Find a Cause or a Reason – Why do we want to be better?  Chip on our shoulder from childhood?   To be better than our own father?  For health?  We often talk in F3 about the fact that we show up for the person beside us.  We are the company we keep, but part of that is carrying our own weight in the group.  It’s our Connections, to our goals and to each other, that help us to focus.

Take the Helm – We have to realize that we steer the ship.  Yes, life happens and throws a wrench in the plans, but we train for chaos.  When things happen, we don’t just watch.  We take the responsibility to do the best we have with the hand we’re dealt.  Nothing exemplifies this more than the concept of being Freed to Lead.  We get to Choose the direction of our growth, which ideally aligns with our Daffodil, and allows us to serve others in our High Impact Zone.

YHC didn’t talk forever.  Think of it as an extended 10-count.  Back to work.

Round 2:

  • Partner 1 – Thrusters (AMRAP)
  • Partner 2 – Plank
  • Timer – Jungle Boy Sprints
    • Run to the end of the blacktop
    • 5 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
    • Run back
    • 5 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
    • Run to the end of the blacktop again
    • 5 x Jungle Boy Squats (OYO)
    • Run back

Solid work.  Then:

  • 15 x Double Crunches (IC)
  • 15 x Penguins (IC)

Chart a Course – How do we know what to do?  The Path to Mastery is important, and in a group like F3, there are a number of examples of High Impact Men who can show the way.  This path should be realistic, because if the path seems impossible and we don’t believe we can do it, we’ve already lost.  A Whetstone relationship can be helpful here.  YHC was reminded of the legendary Dirt’s example.  Dirt was well known in F3 Gastonia for showing up and running EC before bootcamps and through his example, leading others to do the same.  But Dirt started by just running a mile before bootcamp.  A mile became 2.  Two miles became longer, and then with company, until there was a whole group regularly running EC.  Small and simple changes, and following in the footsteps of others can get us to where we want to go.

Be Determined to Make it to the Port – Put in the work everyday.  Don’t stop grinding.  It’ll get boring and we will get sick of it, but we can’t quit.  Our thoughts will waver.  We don’t get to control those.  But we do get to control our actions.  Keep at it.

The last round was everyone’s favorite.

Round 3:

  • Partner 1 – Jump Rope (AMRAP)
  • Partner 2 – Burpees (AMRAP)
  • Timer
    • Lunge Walk w/Block to the end of the blacktop
    • 5 x World War 3 Situps (OYO)
    • Lunge Walk w/Block back

Anchorman was smart and grabbed the 2 half blocks for equal weight distribution on the lunge walk.  YHC skipped jumping rope for a second round of burpees with Alma Mater.  It was worth it.  Good push.  Last round of core:

  • 20 x Double Crunches (IC)
  • 20 x Penguins (IC)

So we know the keys, and following them can help us accelerate, but how do we help others?  If motivation is intrinsic, what role do we play?  If it’s just up to them anyways, are we wasting our time?  You can’t make someone else care.  This is the quote that got me:

“If you want to build a ship, don’t drum up the men and women to gather wood, divide the work, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea.” – some French guy

I know I can get caught up in the what and the how in trying to make a difference, especially with my kids at home, but it’s more about helping them strike that chord and want to be better.  So what can we do?

  • Be an example – let our lives showcase what we stand for and a path to get there
  • Connect – learn about them, connect with them, bring them into the group, and help to understand what motivates them
  • Give them autonomy – we don’t need to decide for them, just help in figuring out the options and let them decide, if they just follow along blindly, they’re less likely to be invested
  • Don’t give up on them – be a brick in their guardrail and let them know you’ve got their back, even and especially when they don’t believe in themselves

Y’all know it’s hard.  As parents, husbands, friends, brothers, sons, leaders, workers, and community members, we’ve been called to have an impact.  Let’s keep our hearts and our energy in the right places.

Timing worked out great, as we had time for about 1 exercise in Mary, and Alma Mater got the call.

  • 10 x Merkins (IC)

and he nailed the cadence count too.

And that was it.  The work was tough.  The running was minimal.  No complaints were filed for excessive talking.  I had a blast.

Moleskin:

I opened it up for PAX to add insight, and Anchorman stayed with the ship theme and said something I hadn’t heard before.  When you make it to port, to make sure you don’t end up back where you started, Burn the Ship.

And that’s where I got stuck, and have been trying to make sense of it ever since.  One of my favorite sayings goes something like “when you’re in the ditch, you’re just 2 feet from the road, and when you’re on the road, you’re just 2 feet from the ditch.”  Old habits and temptations aren’t as far away as sometimes they seem, and it can be surprising to find how little it can take to bring them back.  It’s why the red pill has to be taken daily.  I don’t know that it’s as easy as a single monumental decision to never go back.

And at the same time, I’d like to think I’m never going back, because the Sadclown isn’t who I believe I am anymore.  There wasn’t a single day or decision that changed my identity, but the compounding effect of grinding.  The individual decisions to do a little more or stay for coffee or run EC showed me through my actions who I wanted to be.  And when things do go off track, and I’m headed towards the ditch or the valley, it’s those same little things that can keep me from completely losing it.  Sometimes I feel like we think that the size of the solution has to match the size of the perceived problem, but the answer is usually as simple as being aware and just making the next right decision.

It’s like instead of burning the ship, we have to painstakingly disassemble it one nail and one plank at a time, and every time we take our eyes off the task, we turn around and a piece that we’d disassembled has been rebuilt.  It’s maddening, tedious, and at times our energy drifts, but the work itself isn’t difficult once we know what we’re doing.  And after a while, it’s not about if we are capable of doing the work, but if we can KEEP doing it.  Boredom and complacency always show up somewhere on the journey.  Can we stay focused?  Can we push our rocks anyways?  Each one of us gets to make that choice, not just one time, but every day.  And I’d be surprised if any among us win them all.

I do know one thing though, and that’s that I’ll fail a whole lot more if I go it alone.  My worst days are the ones where I fall into the trap of withdrawing or “doing my own thing”.  Connections, the 2nd F, make all the difference, and I’m thankful for the strength of the pack.

The little things matter.  Keep doing them. They make up our foundation, and our kids and coworkers notice a lot more than we think they do.  And when you’re ready to throw in the towel, just remember there’s another HIM with a funny nickname who wakes up way too early and won’t throw in the towel, and that means you can’t throw it in either.

Y’all are awesome.  Thanks for another opportunity to lead.
