Burger King

10 HIM posted for a pub run this morning.  Having not in attendance last week and not wanting to repeat a recent run YHC threw out to the pax to decide he route.  Immediately Seuss stated he could not do Martha’s and back to which I replied how about to the armory and back with most agreeing however much to my surprise Leppard stated well I’m running to Martha’s!  OK I guess this run is like Burger King where you can have it your way.  4 pax ran to the armory, 4 to Martha’s and another two did their own thing.  In the end I don not think anyone was slack as all seemed pretty gassed at the end (except Seuss who has already run 13 this week after his 50 miler Saturday – what a beast!)

Just could not catch the Waterboy

It was an awfully steamy Thursday morning.  Showed up at 5:25 with not a pax in sight – might this be the morning I head back home write a backblast about how its just too humid to run?  Or take my Sandy V for a 5 mile solo jaunt around Gaston Day School road?  Just as I thought I was going to get off easy with no push from anyone here comes JJ and Waterboy on foot! – (damn I am a lazy ass!)  Next Sargento, Short Sale, and Seuss clocked in just before 5:30 – so much for going home and crawling back into bed.   As usual Seuss, Waterboy and Sargento took off as I watched them scamper up the hill.  Unable to breathe through the humidity I just watched as they ran out of site over the course of five miles.  Oh well maybe next time – just didn’t have it in me this morning to keep up.  Kudos to Short Sale who pushed through the pain of recovery as well as to JJ and Waterboy as they ran home afterwords (batflippers as they are).  Upon arriving back to the Pub we were greeted by a Termite who had to takeoff to go to work early. In the end I think we were all just a little better HIM afterwards.

Huck’s 5 mile 5K

A Gift of a Lifetime

3 Runners, 4 Ruckers and a Short Sale posted for some enrichment Sunday morning.  It was a beautiful morning for getting out of the fartsack to improve oneself.  After a brisk 45 minutes of first F,  6 of us stayed around for “Q Source”  Having just finished Freed to Lead last week, we decided that the Q for the week would have the option of choosing a topic on leadership for discussion.  I choose an excerpt from a book entitled A Lifetime of Observations and Reflections On and Off the Court.  This is a short book of reflections from John Wooden (UCLA’s basketball who won 88 straight games and won the national  championship 10 times in 12 years).  I choose this topic as several Pax (including YHC) are going through a time of transition with kids graduating from high school.  The section of the book I choose was a chapter entitled “A gift of a lifetime” in which John Wooden describes a time in his life when he was about to leave home his father gave him the following list of guidelines for life.

  1. Be true to yourself – This is the foundation of all the subsequent guidelines – and thus the reason that this is listed first.   Without inner honesty nothing else in this list can be accomplished – you cannot be true to others unless you are honest with yourself.
  2. Help others – not just your physical gifts but rather give of your most valuable possession – your time
  3. Make each day your masterpiece – do not get caught up living in the past or the future but make the present count
  4. Drink deeply from good books, especially the Bible – instill a love of reading to your children
  5. Make friendships a fine art – nurture friendships that involve two way dialog
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day – do not get caught up in materialism
  7. Pray for guidance and count and give thanks for your blessings every day – stop asking for more and give thanks for what you already have.

I hope this short list inspires us all to lead a life well lived.

Until next time –

Best Exercise Ever

It was an awesome morning to exercise – what is this thing they call gloom – 46 degrees, clear skies, dry air – what more could you want?  Oh yeah then there was the Q … well I guess you can’t have everything.   7 HIM were up for a Defib challenge this morning.  3 Pax had already put in EC run so I guess that means they knew what they were in for.  Dirt, Watts Up and Flintstone have been real rock pushers lately as a I drove to the AO a few min early to do some recon I passed these guys getting after it over a mile from the AO.  As time approached 3 more men arrived and it was on.

Warm UP :

Obligatory SSH x20

LBCs x 20

Merkins x 20

The thang:

Mosey down towards Riverwood neighborhood stopping at each light pole for the best exercise ever.  At this point YHC proclaimed his love for the the burpee which exercises the upper body, abs and lower body, however,  I felt there was room for improvement – so after reviewing the exicon the night before I found the perfect modification to the burpee – the hand release burpee (HRB) – that is a burpee with a hand release merkin in the middle.  Starting with the first light we did 1 HRB.  The second light 2 HRB continuing all the way to the back entrance of Marthas which amounted to 10 light poles so ending with 10 HRB.   This was surely a crowd pleaser as the men were speechless.  From this point we moseyed to the turd shack for some shoulder work – 3 sets of Hip slappers, wall sits and dirty hook-ups (10 each).  Quick count off then to parking lot for 11s with CCDs and dying cockroaches – We started with lounges between exercises but the Q’s knee didn’t like that so we completed the 11’s with regular mosey between exercises.

YHC did not realize how time flies when the pax are having such a great time.  Unfortunately we did not get to go to the picnic tables for more fun so it was time to mosey back to Sno balls but on the way back we did find time for more HRB at each light pole this time counting down from 5.  Once back we had time for 3 minutes for Mary. – Flutters, Dying Cockroaches Hillbillies and Dirty Dogs. – Time
