3rd F – Listen

This is the commentary I shared at the Yank this past Saturday.  Topic follows up on the four points shared at CSAUP a couple of Saturday’s ago Build Pray Keep Wait.  Topic is listen and give God the time to speak.

Most of us picture prayer sort of like a monologue: We talk to God, sharing our heartfelt thanks and offering up our petitions and requests. But prayer is really more like a dialogue, where we speak with God and the Lord speaks to us.

Listening prayer centers around a clear request for God’s guidance. In making our request, we give God’s guidance authority over the other voices we hear throughout our daily lives. Then we hit the pause button. We wait on God in a time of silence, giving the Lord opportunity to speak to us. We focus our time of prayer on intentional, purposeful listening and let God do the talking.

This is really important because as followers of Jesus, we all desire to do the right thing and make the wisest choices. Yet we are constantly being bombarded with the noise of the world all around us. There are lots of voices telling us very different messages, and too often we find ourselves challenged and confused about what we should do in a given situation or what is really the best way ahead. These are times when we can seek God’s guidance through listening prayer.

This is from the Listening Prayer guide from Faithward.org

This week let’s pray for Pilgrim Progress, Stone Cold, Flintstone, Stinky Bird, Waterboy, Gold Digger, Loveboat, Spiderman, Less Nessman

3rd F – Build Pray Keep Wait

This is the devotional I shared at the CSAUP on Saturday.  Found at devotional published by New Lisbon Church.  Goods words to reflect on.  Have out Pax at the end to pray for this week.  If you were at CSAUP, remember to pray for the number ahead of yours.

Jude 17But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. 18 They said to you, “In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.” 19 These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. 20 But you, dear friends, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to bring you to eternal life. 22 Be merciful to those who doubt; 23 save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh.

Many often overlook the little note that Jude wrote. That’s really all it is, a note. Believers tend to focus on the bigger books in the New Testament Library. We got to the Gospels and Acts for the rich history and powerful stories which contain our Christian roots. We look toward Paul’s letters for church doctrine, or John’s writing for Christian love. Yet, here we have a powerful little note from the brother of James to a church or churches. Jude, in his counseling to those who are enduring difficult periods shares four things they ought to do on their journey if they are to persevere the times.

First, build. We are to build ourselves and others up. I don’t often think of faith as a muscle. But that’s really what it is. We say people have strong or weak faith so in a way we already refer to it as a muscle. Jude tells us to work our muscle of faith, much like a body builder. We can do this through good deeds, through Bible study, evangelism, or Christian community. Building ourselves in disciplines lead to a strong faith which brings us to Jude’s second point.

Second, Pray. Prayer is a discipline and tool given to us by God. As disciples we ought to pray like we ought to work a job, or we ought to love our families, or we ought to eat. Without eating, we starve ourselves. Our bodies give us warning signs that we respond to and we say, I’d better get something to eat. Well, we can starve our lives of God by not praying. We ought to desire to speak to our creator and perfecter like we ought to desire to eat food. And we pray in the Holy Spirit meaning, he is the one who connects us with the Father. He is our phone line or wireless signal. Without him, we are simply roaming.

Third, Keep. I find this odd. Keep yourselves in God’s love. This phrase does not mean keep your love for God, but keep in his love for you. I ask, “how do I remain in his love?” especially when Paul in Romans 8 says nothing can separate us from God’s love? I’m vexed by the idea that our work determines the measure of God’s love yet that seems to be what Jude is saying. The only explanation I can offer is that you remain in God’s love by choosing to remain. This is the struggle, the daily choice to die to self and let Jesus be Lord. This is “working out your salvation with fear and trembling.” This is running the race or fighting the good fight or being the salt of the earth. Our work and effort matters and weighs heavily on abiding in his love. But keeping is not measured by the number of works done, but by the motivation to Love God and Love Others. So we keep on keeping by loving to love.

Fourth, Wait. I don’t like the word wait very much. I like the antonyms: accomplished, fast, achieved, finished, now, immediately, satisfaction, trending, and instant. To wait is to have patience. It is to put aside my natural inclination for immediate satisfaction. Yet, Jude implies in the waiting a sense of hope. For there is one who is carrying us as we build, as we pray, and as we keep. In our lives it is so easy to get caught up in the building, the praying, and the keeping. We lose sight of the end. We feel like the Christian life is a one sided struggle toward perfection yet really it’s a team sport. It is us and God working toward the same end. For we build, pray, and keep but it is only the Lord Jesus Christ who can bring us across the finished line and into eternal glory. And in that wait, I have great hope.

As men of God and Disciples of Jesus, we should build, pray, and keep. But if we forget to wait, and let our desire for achievement, accomplishment, quickness, or completeness then our building, praying, and keeping is in vain. So as we go about the work of our lives remembering what Christ has called us to. Let us build strong Christian Families, let us pray for wisdom and guidance to lead as men, and let us keep the mission to Love God and to Love others by making disciples of all nations. But most of all, let us wait on God’s timing, and he will carry us to heights and places we never imagined. Won’t you wait with me?

For your word says,

Jude 24To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy— 25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!

This week let’s pray for King Pin, Stogie, Gavel, Breaker Breaker, Sargento, Bed Pan, Boudin, Roadie.  Lift these men and their families.

3rd F – Live Soft

I don’t know who is author of the following, but I thought it was worth a reminder for us all:

There is a distinct difference between those who live for God, and those who simply go to church, and call themselves “Christians.” Living for God is a life of self sacrifice. He begins to live, move, and breathe in and through us. It’s a life of doing His will above our own. Its a life of love, kindness, compassion, gentleness, integrity, and boldness. It’s a life that bears FRUIT! It’s not a self-seeking life that follows only its own selfish desires, even at the expense of others. It’s a life that can be seen in our home, work, and relationships… both publicly and privately. It can be evidenced by the way we talk to people, the way we forgive people, the way we treat people, the way we handle their feelings and deal with their actions toward us. It’s a life of humility, not pride. It’s a life of forgiving others and ourselves. It is not a life of perfection, but it IS a life of accountability; to God, and to others. It’s a 7 day a week life. Not a 1 day a week, when certain people are looking, kind of life. If we live for God, people will know it. They will see it, as they come to know us. If not, we need to ask ourselves if we might just be going to church, and going through the motions. Are we trying to change the Word, or are we allowing the Word to penetrate and change US? Because the closer we draw near to a loving and powerful God, the more He changes us. We don’t remain stagnant. We don’t remain hard. We soften, and we grow.

This week let’s pray of Double Stuf, Sledgeomatic, Volt, Red Ribbon, Voodoo, Tesla, Buckshot, Sparky, Dr Seuss.

3rf F – God of Every Moment

The following is based in part from devotion published by In Touch ministries:

Men tend to separate life into categories, work, home, faith, and leisure. Yet that’s not how the God sees us. His interest in us is not confined only to faith. He cares about the details of every day.

Believers are in union with Jesus Christ through His indwelling Spirit, every aspect of a Christian’s existence has a spiritual connection. There’s no time in the day when the believer’s life separates into “sacred” and “secular” components. The anxious heart that distracts us from prayer is as much God’s concern as the tired mind that easily drifts into temptation.

Scripture emphasizes God’s commitment to the believer’s whole self: “His divine power has granted to us everything pertaining to life and godliness” – 2 Peter 1:3 . Day-to-day particulars of life matter, too. We need never wonder if God can or wants to meet our needs. God grants whatever is required to grow faith—whether that means food, comfort, knowledge, or peace.

The loving heavenly Father sees us in our entirety, not physical beings with a spiritual life on the side. We cheat ourselves when we think God is interested solely in our spiritual needs. He has many kinds of blessings to offer, if we just ask.

3rd F- A Fresh Start

This is taken from NIV 365 Daily Devotional – thought it really good.  Begins with a passage from Isaiah 53:4-12

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,(A)
yet we considered him punished by God,(B)
    stricken by him, and afflicted.(C)
But he was pierced(D) for our transgressions,(E)
    he was crushed(F) for our iniquities;
the punishment(G) that brought us peace(H) was on him,
and by his wounds(I) we are healed.(J)
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,(K)
each of us has turned to our own way;(L)
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity(M) of us all.
He was oppressed(N) and afflicted,
yet he did not open his mouth;(O)
he was led like a lamb(P) to the slaughter,(Q)
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression[a] and judgment(R) he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;(S)
for the transgression(T) of my people he was punished.[b]
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,(U)
and with the rich(V) in his death,
though he had done no violence,(W)
nor was any deceit in his mouth.
Yet it was the Lord’s will(Y) to crush(Z) him and cause him to suffer,(AA)
and though the Lord makes[c] his life an offering for sin,(AB)
he will see his offspring(AC) and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper(AD) in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,(AE)
    he will see the light(AF) of life[d] and be satisfied[e];
by his knowledge[f] my righteous servant(AG) will justify(AH) many,
and he will bear their iniquities.(AI)
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,[g](AJ)
and he will divide the spoils(AK) with the strong,[h]
because he poured out his life unto death,(AL)
and was numbered with the transgressors.(AM)
For he bore(AN) the sin of many,(AO)
and made intercession(AP) for the transgressors.

Do you feel tired or poor? Do you long for freedom? Do you feel tossed by life’s storms?
Most of us experience these conditions at some point. Isaiah describes Someone who understands exactly how we feel. Even his own people rejected this “man of suffering” (Isaiah 53:3). Many hated him. Nothing about his mere physical appearance attracted people. In short, most of us wouldn’t have given this person the time of day.

Yet this passage describes the most compelling individual in the history of the world. Somehow we can’t resist him. Perhaps it’s what he offers: himself as one like us—one who knows sorrow and yet who offers peace and relief. He offers himself as the sacrifice for our sins. He is the Messiah. And Isaiah makes it clear that Jesus identifies with all the difficulties we could ever face. He knows what it’s like to be crushed, despised, rejected and in deep emotional pain. He knows the quiet desperation we endure when faced with mounting bills, job loss, marital discord, parenting challenges and all the other stuff of life that—if we’re wise—sends us to our knees.

Take a few moments to reread the passage for today and let the words sink into your consciousness. This Jesus, the very Son of God, came to Earth for the very purpose of becoming one of us, albeit temporarily. So when we kneel before Jesus, we kneel before one who can relate to our struggles and hardships. He kneels alongside us to revitalize our energy, provide relief from our stress, set us free from sin and enable us to endure life’s storms. Then, through his powerful Holy Spirit, he offers us a fresh start.

This week let’s pray for T Square, Clavin, Freon, Purple Haze, Roscoe, Hacksaw, Boss, Short Sale

3rd F – More

Humans are born with the instinct to strive for more.  Innovate and invent. Better ways to accomplish tasks, save time, cut costs.  More wealth and more toys.  Truth be told, most of us can likely do more in our work outs as well.  I bet if most of us were to be honest we could all run a little faster or do a few more reps.  More is a mindset.  More is very easy in some areas, or at least the motivation to more is greater.

What if we begin to consider “more” in our spiritual life?  More time in scripture, more time in prayer, more time listening for God’s voice.  In John chapter 10 Jesus says “I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will be saved. He will come in and go out and find pasture. 10The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I have come that they may have life, and have it in all its fullness.” The Spirit wants to give us “more”, we only need to be willing to receive.

As I write this, I am about an hour away from heading out of town to take my daughter to her first year of college seven hours away.  I know many of you have done this in the past and some are doing this year.  I am pretty certain you have all handled it better than me.  Again, I find myself wanting more.  More time with my little girl, more time to protect her, to teach her, to not have to let her go.  But I think, too, that the time for more is now.  All of these things I want more of are not going away, in fact they will likely return in a much greater way.  As we all know, life has a way of coming at you fast.  There is a lot of “more” in the future with her, especially more money.

I don’t know if anyone needs to read this, but I do know that I needed to write it.  No matter the season of life you are in, the time for more Spirit is now.  To prepare for when the next “more’ of life arrives.

This week let’s pray for our site Q’s, Broke, Stinky Bird, Sparky, VooDoo, Big Pappy, Dirt, Wojo, Round Up, Clavin, Sargento, Whoopee, Buckeye, JJ, EZ Rider, Linus, Tube, Pockets

3rd F – Disruption

We think of disruptions in the sense of obstacles.  Kids being too loud while the game is on, getting an email at work right at quitting time.  Altering our pleasure. Getting in the way.   Disruption is defined as “a disturbance or problem that interrupts an event, activity, or process.”  But sometimes disruption can be a good thing.

In order to move forward in our lives, we have to be willing to embrace disruption.  We often speak of 1% better each day.  Maybe some disruption can change 1% to 3%.  Stop being satisfied with small gain, aim for something larger.  If you want to run 5 miles faster, then change something.  Take an inventory of your actions and activities, a hard, honest inventory, and make your plan.  So, the question becomes, what in your life needs to be disrupted?  What is in your life that isn’t making you better?  What are you not doing that you know you should be?

Late in his career, after he had become the all-time major league leader in hits, Pete Rose was asked in an interview why he still ran allout on every ground ball he hit, even those he knew would lead to an out.  He responded with “because if I stop getting better, then I stop being good.”  In Matthew 19 Jesus tells the parable of the rich young ruler: Just then a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life(O)?”(P)

17 “Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied. “There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.”(Q)

18 “Which ones?” he inquired.

Jesus replied, “‘You shall not murder, you shall not commit adultery,(R) you shall not steal, you shall not give false testimony, 19 honor your father and mother,’S“>c and ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’[d](T)

20 “All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do I still lack?”

21 Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect,(U) go, sell your possessions and give to the poor,(V) and you will have treasure in heaven.(W) Then come, follow me.”

22 When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.

A life disrupted.  What may not seem easy, can lead to the greatest reward.

This week let’s pray for Def Leppard,  Stroganoff, Whopee, Freight, Tool Time, Broke, Sister Act, Big Pappy, Huckleberry.  No reason, let’s just lift these HIMs.

3rdF Quarterly Meeting Preblast

Alright Men the 3rdF quarterly event has finally been set for Friday April 13, 2018. Speakers start at 7:00pm so arrive before to get your coffee and your seat. Yes I do realize that is not in the first quarter but hey its close. It’s not like Christmas in June or anything! I’m very excited to hear what our speakers have for us. This quarter we have the wise one Def Leppard and the quite one Blart. From my experience if either of these guys have something to say it would be best to listen!

If you are new or didn’t make it out to our first event last year I highly recommend you attend. This is a time for our brothers to share some wisdom based on faith without the distractions of the 1stF.

The meeting will take place at The Porch back behind Parkwood Baptist. It is at the intersection of Burton Wood drive and Dixon Rd in Gastonia.

Gashouse 3rd F Coffee-rama

When: Friday, October 13th, 2017, 7:00-8:30ish pm

Where: New Covenant Church,  631 Efird St Gastonia NC (Corner of Hudson and Efird

Who: Hosted by Hushpuppy and Midwife, All Gashouse pax

Opening by Hushpuppy, Special guest speakers Sparky and Freight

Moleskin:

The long mentioned but often ignored 3rd F will be celebrated on Friday, October 13th (total coincidence that day was chosen!). As Dredd recorded in Freed to Lead, the first F is the Magnet.  lets face it, we posted to that first workout with the hope of becoming a stallion like Dolph, but we end up returning because of the second F, the Fellowship.  It becomes the glue that keeps us together, posting at ungodly hours to sweat and splash Merlot in the gloom.  But sometimes we shy away from that 3rd F,  finding it mysterious and religious. We hear that and in the back of our minds wonder if something Pentecostal might rub off on us.  In reality, Faith is the dynamite which activates what we do!  It is that thing inside a man that says “If I can do this, I can do more for my family, my neighbor, and my community!”

Tha thang:

I encourage every High Impact Man of the Gashouse to join us at New Covenant Church for Coffee-rama and Conversation.  Midwife will host us in the coffee lounge at NCC and  YHC will open up with a testimony of how God has brought me from a life of drugs and near death experiences to the Gashouse and a new life, Freight and Sparky will share on family and community leadership through the Dynamite of Faith.  This will not be a sermon preached from a pulpit, but friends gathered to strengthen each other in our faith.

Tweet an HC if you’ll make it and Post!

September 3rd F Preblast, Restoration and Forgiveness

This month’s theme is on Restoration and Forgiveness.  YHC was consumed in August with both work and vacation so I must make Cobains (all apologies) for not posting a preblast.  I appreciate those who stepped up and stood in the gap for me.  This month I have felt it is important to share on the Forgiveness and Restoration that our Lord has provided for us through his Son.  There has been much turmoil with Hurricanes, Fire raging throughout the country, political and social unrest; like everyone in our great country suddenly hates his neighbor. In all the focus on the spec in our neighbors eye we lose sight of one fact: We who judge the other are far from perfect ourselves.  Thank God that he has provided a way to reconcile us to Himself.

Week 1 I planned on sharing on Daniel 6: King Darius was a king who loved his servant Daniel but was bound by the law and forced to put Daniel in the lions den, but God had another plan.  In John 8: A woman was condemned to die by the law of Moses for adultery,  but Jesus had another plan.  How do these 2 people condemned for breaking the law find restoration and forgiveness?  Unfortunately I did not blast this out so only JJ arrived in time for the 3rd F gathering.  I will share on this in week 3

Week 2, Hushpuppy will be celebrating his 16th anniversary with his M and will not make Saturday 9/9.  This opportunity is open for anyone who would like to step up and share.

Week 3:Daniel 6 and John 8

Week 4: Luke 15:11-32 “While he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was moved with compassion. His father ran to him, hugged him, and kissed him.21 Then his son said, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. ” We all know the story of the prodigal son, but who restored who? The story of the loving father and his 2 sons will remind us of God’s love towards us and the end we may ask, “Which son am I?”

Week 5: Hosea Chapter 2: Sometimes God allows us to go through turmoil when we are stubborn, but his desire is always to restore them.

Beginning Tuesday 9/12 We will begin reading “The Case for Christ” by Lee Strobel at the Crusade.  Join us from 6am to 6:30 every Tuesday at the Starbucks in Harris Teeter at the corner of Robinwood and Kendrick.  Get your copy here:
