Day 1: Love is patient

Love works. It is life’s most powerful motivator and has far greater depth and meaning than most people realize. It always does what is best for others and can empower us to face the greatest of problems. We are born with a lifelong thirst for love. Our hearts desperately need it like our lungs need oxygen. Love changes our motivation for living. Relationships become meaningful with it. No marriage is successful without it.

Love is built on two pillars that best define what it is. Those pillars are patience and kindness. All other characteristics of love are extensions of these two attributes. And that’s where your dare will begin. With patience.

Love will inspire you to become a patient person. When you choose to be patient, you respond in a positive way to a negative situation. You are slow to anger. You choose to have a long fuse instead of a quick temper. Rather than being restless and demanding, love helps you settle down and begin extending mercy to those around you. Patience brings an internal calm during an external storm.

No one likes to be around an impatient person. It causes you to overreact in angry, foolish, and regrettable ways. The irony of anger toward a wrongful action is that it spawns new wrongs of its own. Anger almost never makes things better. In fact, it usually generates additional problems. But patience stops problems in their tracks. More than biting your lip, more than clapping a hand over your mouth, patience is a deep breath. It clears the air. It stops foolishness from whipping its scorpion tail all over the room. It is a choice to control your emotions rather than allowing your emotions to control you, and shows discretion instead of returning evil for evil.

If your spouse offends you, do you quickly retaliate, or do you stay under control? Do you find that anger is your emotional default when treated unfairly? If so, you are spreading poison rather than medicine.

Anger is usually caused when the strong desire for something is mixed with disappointment or grief. You don’t get what you want and you start heating up inside. It is often an emotional reaction that flows out of our own selfishness, foolishness, or evil motives.

Patience, however, makes us wise. It doesn’t rush to judgment but listens to what the other person is saying. Patience stands in the doorway where anger is clawing to burst in, but waits to see the whole picture before passing judgment. The Bible says, “He who is slow to anger has great understanding, but he who is quick-tempered exalts folly” (Proverbs 14:29).

As sure as a lack of patience will turn your home into a war zone, the practice of patience will foster peace and quiet. “A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, but the slow to anger calms a dispute” (Proverbs 15:18). Statements like these from the Bible book of Proverbs are clear principles with timeless relevance. Patience is where love meets wisdom. And every marriage needs that combination to stay healthy.

Patience helps you give your spouse permission to be human. It understands that everyone fails. When a mistake is made, it chooses to give them more time than they deserve to correct it. It gives you the ability to hold on during the tough times in your relationship rather than bailing out under the pressure.

But can your spouse count on having a patient wife or husband to deal with? Can she know that locking her keys in the car will be met by your understanding rather than a demeaning lecture that makes her feel like a child? Can he know that cheering during the last seconds of a football game won’t invite a loud-mouthed laundry list of ways he should be spending his time? It turns out that few people are as hard to live with as an impatient person.

What would the tone and volume of your home be like if you tried this biblical approach: “See that no one repays another with evil for evil, but always seek after that which is good for one another” (1 Thessalonians 5:15).

Few of us do patience very well, and none of us do it naturally. But wise men and women will pursue it as an essential ingredient to their marriage relationships. That’s a good starting point to demonstrate true love.

This Love Dare journey is a process, and the first thing you must resolve to possess is patience. Think of it as a marathon, not a sprint. But it’s a race worth running.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.
—Ephesians 4:2 NIV

TODAY’S DARE
The first part of this dare is fairly simple. Although love is communicated in a number of ways, our words often reflect the condition of our heart. For the next day, resolve to demonstrate patience and to say nothing negative to your spouse at all. If the temptation arises, choose not to say anything. It’s better to hold your than to say something you’ll regret.

Be a Better Husband Challenge

Whetstone has been an absolute blessing to me over this last year and has taught me many things. Main thing has been getting right with myself. Whether it’s dealing with my anxiety, being a better listener or being a better husband. In trying to be a better husband and understand my M better, my Stone and I recently discussed reading “The Love Dare” with my M. The Love Dare was made famous by the movie “Fireproof” staring Kirk Cameron. In the movie Kirk Cameron is a heroic fire captain who values dedication and service to others above all else. But the most important partnership in his life, his marriage, is about to go up in smoke. This story follows one man’s desire to transform his life and marriage through the healing power of faith and fully embrace the firefighter’s code: Never Leave Your Partner Behind.

Fitting isn’t it? The F3 credo is leave no man behind…What else is ironic is that The Love Dare is actually a 40 day challenge. Are you seeing where I am going with this?

“Lord, allow us to be better Men, Husbands, Fathers and leaders in our community, Amen.”

You hear this in almost every prayer during COT. I would like for all of us to focus on the better Husband part over the next 40 days. That said I want to challenge all of us to follow “The Love Dare”. There is a daily scripture, reading and a specific dare for you to for your spouse. The book states that some dares will be easy and some very challenging, but take each day seriously, and be creative and courageous in each attempt. I can tell you already from just starting; you will encounter your jester at some point. This is where you will learn how to overcome and conquer.

Now here is the best part, you don’t need to buy anything. I have the workbook and will be sharing each days reading and dare with you. Look for tweets from me with the hashtag #F3LoveDare. The Tweets will link to posts on the F3 Gastonia site.

Challenge will start on Saturday morning October 12th.

Have fun and enjoy the challenge.

Down But Not Out

YHC believes he re-aggravated an old 5k injury from 5 years ago, perhaps its a bruised meniscus again. But what the hell do I know, I’m not a WebMD. This slight setback has kept me from participating in any type of bootcamp/run/ruck workout the latter part of this week. I knew I had the Q this Friday at Downtown, so it was time to have an alternate weinke made to accommodate myself. Haven’t done a complete Core only workout since HIPAAPALOOZA so thought I’d give it a go again.

Road Not Taken

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

At Diablo Sammich we are Ruckers. We set out to get in some mileage with no planned path in mind. We go off road, climb loading docks and bear crawl across pavement. We never really know where we are going, but in the end we can look back and say we made it and we made it together. We all stayed together and we got better together. We rekindle old friendships with those we haven’t seen in awhile and we welcome new faces that make it seem as if you’ve been known for years. We help pave the way for others to follow in our footsteps in hopes they too will take the road less traveled.
This morning wasn’t about hiking 2 miles, doing numerous bear crawls, performing spontaneous monkey humpers, grinding through various merkins, grabbing some curb for Mike Tysons or lunge walking various lengths. It was about getting to know your brother a little better. As I led the PAX around, I would often look back and constantly see conversation flowing like a fine wine.
As we ended our fellowship hike down the unknown path there was still time to get a little stronger. As we lay on our six on the end of the path we held our packs high above our heads as we gazed into the morning sky whilst flutter kicking our legs in a perfect cadence. We then proceeded to push our packs up to the heavens. Back on our feet we pulled our packs high and again over our heads.

We got in 2 miles as we remembered those on D-Day. While we rucked we took a short marching break and pretended to storm the beaches at Normandy. We army crawled halfway across the soccer field as if we were crawling under the barbed wire. We then switched up to bear crawl the remaining half of the field.

It Taint that hard

No repeat Q fails for me today. Yes, YHC had a major Q fail for the first time in my time at F3. I forgot I had the Q at Boar’s Nest on Sunday and I left Montross and Bed Pan high and dry. That said I had asked VooDoo on Sunday who had the Q this Tuesday at Bulldog as I thought i’d like to take it. He laughed and said “Uhh, You do!”. Well ill be damned, I forgot I signed up! Guess I need to re-enable those calendar notifications on slack and piss everyone off again just so i can be reminded of when I’m Q.

Any who, I was happy to be out at Bulldog again and excited to Q. Thought I’d do a little ladder action this go round.

By this time we were all sweaty and nasty. Someone pointed out Watt’s Up Poison Ivy, Sumac, Oak, Bret Micheals, i dunno what is was but it was poison something. Apparently he was wraslin with a peacock in the woods. Watt’s Up then proceeded to show us all of the mysterious poison sores all over his body, thankfully not his taint though. HunkAJunk then pipes up and said he’d make Watt’s Up jealous by stripping naked and running backwards through a corn field. Oompa Loompa got excited. Show to know!

I know it’s been humid out and that might make us sweat a little more, but looking around at the aftermath (as HushPuppy has pointed out in his photo on the twitter box) you can tell these HIM put in a lot of work this morning. I noticed some had to modify some exercises today for various reasons, but when i saw them modify they still chose an exercise that pushed themselves hard. And that’s what you should do when you modify. Don’t modify to something easy, modify to something that still makes you push yourself. Great work by all. Love this AO!
