Church to Church

6 PAX descended on Lake Murray for some relay miles, in the Dam to Dam Relay.  Here’s the highlights:

Team Name:

  • Burly Sebastians

Team Roster:

  • Go Greene Go (F3 Shelby) – Got us out to a fast start, as he was the first runner from our heat to reach Exchange Zone #2.  GGG scoffed at all the newfangled gadgetry, conquering his legs and the weekend with no watch and a flip phone.  His group texts showed his perseverance to finishing a task using only T9.
  • Latte (F3 Shelby) (R) – The captain of our ship, and the only rookie on the team.  Latte’s van got the job done.  With over 250,000 miles, that sucker had seen a lot, but it hadn’t chauffeured a relay team through the back roads of South Carolina, and it got stamped with it’s very own F3 sticker for its efforts.  Latte’s legs were strong too, coming in under his predicted times and running farther than he ever had in one day before.
  • EZ Rider – Part of the Respect Twin Towers that anchored the Burly Sebastians, EZ just crushed the first of three 7+mile legs on the course. With 12+ miles in 2 legs, EZ stepped up his training and his game on race day.  No quit in EZ.
  • Flintstone (Q) – The guy who pulled the team together, Flintstone made sure that 6 guys made it to the start line (even though there were only 4 at the start).  He also had a streak of trying to drop one in the stalls at 3 Exchange Zones in a row.  Probably hit up 90% of the restrooms on the course.  Ran a 7+ mile leg, too.  Caught by Sargento.
  • BOS – The second of two Respect Twin Towers, BOS finished with the most miles on the course.  Ran strong and fast, like the competitor he is, and found whatever was left and emptied the tank when it got tough.  A pro.
  • Gavel – The most clutch member of the team.  Gavel was a late addition to the team, and the pilot of our second ship.  Stepped in when needed and crushed his runs.  Got the Glory Leg for his efforts.  Accelerating.

Results:

  • Total Time:  9:21:33
  • Place: 56 of 102
  • Team Average Pace: 8:51
  • Beat predicted time by 10 minutes

Moleskin:

  • What a great day for racing.  The weather couldn’t have been better, and it was a Saturday in February.  Plenty of sun and plenty warm.  The legs were well designed.  The Exchange Zones were all churches, but the people and facilities were nice.  The burgers and doughnuts at the finish line were top notch.  The view at the end also couldn’t be beat.  It’s really a well run race and a great experience.
  • That said, there’s always still meat left on the bone, and always a reason to get out and do it again.  Lookin forward to the next one.

Thanks to all who took part and all who supported us running with us in training and throwing some encouragement our way.

Cha Ching @ The Yank

23 was the count in downtown Belmont for some FNG scooping, EMOM circuits, merkins / squats and burpee fest with hills.  Here’s what we did:

To the Bunker for warm up:

  • SSH
  • Gravel Pickers
  • Merkins
  • Peter Parkers
  • Parker Peters

Left the Bunker for a quick warm up mosey where we ran across some strange guy looking for F3.  Dirt pulled him in and gave him the whole rundown of what we do.  We pulled into the pavilion for a quick recap of core principles for the FNG and a dynamic warmup of 5 exercises with reps for each needing to be finished within 1 minute.  Exercises were:

  • 15 x Burpees
  • 30 x Jump Lunges
  • 40 x Toe Touches
  • 50 x CDDs
  • 60 x SSH

Mosey over to Myrtle for some hill work and an ascending series of merkins, squats and burpees:

  • 5 merkins / 5 squats / 5 burpees
  • Run about halfway up Myrtle and back down
  • Repeat for 10, 15 & 20 reps of each

FNG held up, as did the rest of the PAX, and we headed to the front of Cherubs where we learned that today wouldn’t be leg day as the Q had a long run lined up for Sunday, so we planked up and worked through:

  • 11 x Diamond Merkins
  • 10 x Merkins
  • 9 x Diamond Merkins
  • 8 x Merkins
  • 7 x Diamond Merkins

It was about here we learned it’d get easier around 4.  We weren’t there yet.

  • 6 x Merkins
  • 5 x Diamond Merkins
  • 4 x Merkins
  • 3 x Diamond Merkins
  • 2 x Merkins
  • 1 x Diamond Merkin

Mosey around to the parking lot off Glenway behind Station where we saw Pink Floyd and saluted him with

  • 10 x Monkey Humpers

before hammering out some core work with

  • 20 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 20 x Elbow Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 10 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 10 x Elbow Mountain Climbers (IC)

Last stop on the tour was a trip to the track on a day that wasn’t leg or running day to, well, run.

Partner Up (preferably with similar ability level)

  • Partner 1 – Mosey
  • Partner 2 – 3 burpees, then Jailbreak to catch Partner 1
  • Switch
  • Repeato for 2 laps around the track

Everyone joined in to pick up the Six, and we headed back to the Yank statue to finish what we started, with enough time for:

  • 15 x Burpees
  • 30 x Jump Lunges
  • 40 x Toe Touches

And that was that.  Over 2.5 miles and more than a few merkins later, we were smoked.

COT was strong with BOM and the Q took us out.

No Horses

2 guys rucked while the Coconut Horses got their beauty sleep on King day in Q-Source.

Their presence was strong during Q-Source though, and YHC came away with a number of pearls about 1st F and the King.

If you’re not in a Q-Source group, find one.  You’re missing out.

Greene Flag for Race Week

Another Race Week got started with 6 bootcampers and 2 walkers hitting the pavement at Martha’s for some Lazy Dora and the Greene Game.  Here’s what I remember:

Dirt was a late scratch from his Sandlot Q, so YHC relied on a go-to Weinke that never disappoints.

The Dee

Or was it the Lee

After back-to-back Dees last week, Watts Up had the idea to sell JJ on the idea that we were runnin it back and doin it again.  What doesn’t kill you… JJ thought the Sky Q was just trying to tell him something, so he was ready, but the Dee it was not.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Abe Vagodas (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 15 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 15 x Toe Touches (IC)

Mosey to the parking lot at Martha’s.  We counted off right.  Then again.  Then we counted off and it got progressively worse.  Right where YHC wanted em.

Lazy Dora

  • 100 x Merkins & Hold Plank
  • 200 x Squats & Hold Al Gore
  • 300 x LBCs & Hold 6 Inches
  • Swap as partners choose to swap

Twist of fate, as last time, my partner was Watts Up.  This time it was Watts Up again.  Good fortune on my part, as he carried us again.

Mosey to the flagpole to describe the complicatedness of…

The Greene Game

Named for Go Greene Go, an F3 Shelby PAX (and Burly Sebastians Dam-to-Dam team member), this game is a good time, and provides a surprisingly taxing beatdown.

At its heart, its simple.  Different exercises have different point values.  Add up all your points, and see who’s got the most.  Here was today’s menu:

  • 1 point – 20 x Flutter Kicks (Count 1 side)
  • 2 points – 10 x Burpees
  • 4 points – Quarter Wedge Run
  • 6 points – Half Wedge Run
  • 8 points – Full Lap Run

We probably did this for about 15-20 minutes, and everyone went in different directions, except Stinky Bird and Nutria worked together and Bandit and Linus were out walking.

Scores were as follows:

  • Dry Rub – 24 points
  • Flintstone – 33 points
  • JJ – 34 points
  • Nutria – 34 points
  • Stinky Bird – 34 points
  • Watts Up – 34 points

Guys learned the gameplay, and my advantage was gone, but I still unexpectedly got in 70 burpees, which wasn’t at all the goal.  Just kind of happened.

Anyways, we made it back just in time, and we were done.

Announcements:

  • Yank & Folsom Shirts for Sale

Prayer Requests:

  • Roundup & Family
  • PAX concerns for friends and family struggling with health and life

Moleskin:

Always glad to get out in The Gloom.  Good to see Sandlot regulars Linus, Watts Up and Dry Rub today.

Race day is coming.  Start the week off right.  Never Miss a Monday.

Almost

8 men showed up for 3 Corners and plenty of lunge-lunge-burpees.  Here’s what we did:

EC was Dirt, Whoopee, and YHC.  Dirt and Whoopee went all the way out to Hudson and back.  YHC wasn’t so ambitious.  We all made it back for the main event.

The Thang:

  • 15 x SSH (IC)
  • 15 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 15 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 15 x Mike Tysons (IC)

Mosey towards Martha’s.  Fake left turn to the main entrance.  Mosey on down to the grounds entrance.  From here, we choose to enter the sacred grounds by:

  • Lunge-Lunge-Burpee

Once we reached the center of the fields, it was time for some stackable Three Corners.

  • 10 x Merkins
  • Run back out the length of the field
  • 10 x Merkins
  • 15 x Squats
  • Run the outfield fence
  • 10 x Merkins
  • 15 x Squats
  • 20 x Toe Touches
  • Run back to the center of the fields

Once we were all back, we

  • Bear Crawl around the concession stand

You know who is great at bear crawls?  Short Sale! That’s who!  And he wasn’t even there!

At any rate, that was so much fun we did it again, using a different field and different exercises

  • 10 x Superman Pullups
  • Run back out the length of the field
  • 10 x Superman Pullups
  • 15 x Monkey Humpers
  • Run the outfield fence

“I don’t always hump, but when I do, I hump monkeys”

  • 10 x Superman Pullups
  • 15 x Monkey Humpers
  • 20 x Freddie Mercuries
  • Run back to the center of the fields

Once we were all back, we

  • Bear Crawl around the concession stand

Enough of that stupid, there are plenty of other stupid things to do, so we left the sacred grounds by:

  • Lunge-Lunge-Burpee

And went back towards the Turd Shack where it was noted that there had been many rounds of 11s done before.  Today would be another one of those days, but complicated, because teachers like making things unnecessarily complicated.

  • Mosey to the other side of the parking lot
    • 11 x Nolan Ryans R
    • 11 x Oblique Crunches R
    • 11 x Crunchy Frogs
  • Mosey back, stopping halfway for
    • 1 x Burpee
  • Return to the other side for
    • 11 x Nolan Ryans L
    • 11 x Oblique Crunches L
    • 11 x 4-count Flutter Kicks
  • Repeato, counting down on each side by 1 each time (except for the burpees)

Work til we’re close to time, then haul back so we’re not late, with a Jailbreak at the top of the lot.

COT came, and Folgers cough got a little strong.  Phlegm came up, but nothing else.  He turned to the group and just said “Almost”

Announcements:

  • 2nd F Lunch
  • Retreat
  • Spots on Smokey Mountain Relay available
  • Walk option at The Sandlot

Prayer Requests:

  • Families
  • Student at YHC’s school

Moleskin:

Folgers pushes it, man.  I know when he first showed up, not knowing anyone in the group, then splashed merlot multiple times his first post, we weren’t sure he’d come back.  Stinky Bird stuck with him that day, and he had quite a streak going splashing merlot.  Then he didn’t, and now he goes as hard as anyone out there.  And now he’s closing in on 100 posts.  There are chapters to his story that none of us have read, but I know we’re all glad to have Folgers out with us in The Gloom.

Thankful for the opportunity to lead.

Wednesday Morning Lights

9 men got out in the gloom and tried to catch passes defended by the darkness and the long arms of the Nantan.  Bouquets were tossed.  Here’s what I remember.

EH Ruck in Ricky Bobby’s neighborhood left YHC preparing for new guys.  Lo and behold we got one.  Full disclaimer given.

The Thang:

  • 10 x SSH (IC)
  • 10 x Don Q (IC)
  • 10 x Toy Soldiers (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbillies (IC)
  • 10 x Squats (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 10 x Merkins (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 10 x American Hammers (IC)
  • 10 x LBCs (IC)

Mosey 1 lap, then back towards the flag for

  • 20 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 20 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 20 x Penguins (IC)
  • 20 x Toe Touches (IC)

Basics of F3 today, with a classic Dora

  • 100 x Merkins
  • 200 x Squats
  • 300 x LBCs

Q Fail, as shoe came untied.  Nutria picked up YHC’s arse.

Mosey 1 lap, then back towards the flag for

  • 20 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 20 x Flutter Kicks (IC)
  • 20 x Penguins (IC)
  • 20 x Toe Touches (IC)

Football time.  Groups of 3.  1 PAX throwing, 1 PAX as receiver, 1 PAX as defender.  Sandlot football, best of 3.  2 completions, defender does an exercise.  1 or 0 completions, QB and receiver do exercises.  Interception?  Defender calls whatever they want.

Exercises:

  • Merkins/Dying Cockroaches
  • Squats/American Hammers

This was fun, but at the same time, the football faded into the darkness a lot.  Especially the blue and black one.  No interceptions, which was too bad.  Really, as we tend to do, most everybody did all the exercises each time, regardless of whether the passes were caught.

3 minutes to kill, let’s play everyone’s favorite game… “Catch the Bouquet”!  Stupid idea to kill time instead of Mary, Q throws the ball backwards over his head, and the PAX that catches it gets to call an exercise, then they get to throw next.  You can guess how it went.  YHC threw the ball 4 times before anyone caught it.  Nobody wants to catch the bouquet, even when it’s not really flowers or has the shackles of marriage attached.

Nantan and 1st F Q came through, and we ended up with:

  • Sargento – Merkins (Really?)
  • Roscoe – 8-count Bodybuilders

Back to the circle with little time left.  Put Urkel on the spot, and he called

  • Dying Cockroaches (IC)

and time was called.

Announcements:

  • 2nd F Lunch – February 16th – JR Cash’s
  • Flat Rock Retreat

Prayer Requests:

  • Watts Up & family
  • Tesla & family
  • Roscoe’s FIL & family
  • Linus’s family
  • Gumby
  • Buckshot traveling

Joe Parker got the name “Bouquet” due to his eagerness to get hitched, influenced I’m sure by the stupid events of the day.

Moleskin:

Happy to have the chance to lead today.  Learned a lot.  Not all new guys are out of shape, as Bouquet showed.  I get caught up on being aware and ready to modify things easier, that I can miss chances to make things harder on the spot.

Lots of chances to learn.  Glad they keep finding me.

Thanks for the opportunity to lead.

PAX Choice

We had 11 for a 3-man relay and some PAX choice on a moderate Monday at The Sandlot.  Here’s what I remember.

Hit the sidewalks for some 5 AM EC with Dirt and returned to take my sweet time getting ready for the Q.  Turns out everyone else was too, as there were 3 of us there at 5:27 and 11 by 5:30.  Anyways, time to get started…

The Thang

  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Hillbilly Walkers (IC)
  • 10 x Moroccan Night Clubs (IC)
  • 10 x Goofballs (IC)

YHC brought a kettlebell along for the trip, and one PAX at a time would carry the kettlebell to the next place while the others moseyed and planked til the carrier caught up.  A little Frogger across the street to the back of the other bank parking lot for

  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)
  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • Alphabets (A-I) (For those who don’t know it, start from a 6 inches position and use both legs pointed to write capital letters going through the alphabet)

Mosey around to the front of the building for a 3 man relay.  Split into 3 groups:

  • 1’s – Flutters
  • 2’s – Lunge Walk across the parking lot to the…
  • 3’s – Squats
  • Mosey back

So there’s always someone moving and 2 doing exercises.  Rotate through the spots as described above.  We went through so everyone did everything twice.

Today’s 10 count of choice was for any of the PAX to talk about what had gone well so far in 2022.  We heard about Bandit’s M’s new job, good health for PAX and their families, returning from Mexico, and improving mental health for family members.

Load up the bell and head across the street to the funeral home.  for some PAX choice.  One PAX calls an exercise and sends a runner out.  The PAX do the called exercise til the runner returns.  The returning runner calls an exercise and sends out the next guy.  Repeat until the Q is all that’s left to run the last leg.  Here’s what was called:

  • YHC – LBCs
  • Captain Stubing – SSHs
  • El Camino – Merkins
  • JJ – Crunchy Frogs
  • Timeframe – Freddie Mercuries
  • Tube – American Hammers
  • Hush Puppy – Balls to the Sky
  • Stinky Bird – Big Boys
  • Dirt – Burpees
  • Bandit – Dying Cockroaches
  • Cinderella – CDDs

JJ took the bell from here and ran with it back across the street.  The rest of us picked up the Six.  That’s not true.  Lots of Frogger this time back across Union, but we still had 11, so we didn’t lose anyone.  We paused for another round of…

  • Alphabets (J-R)

And then another 3 man relay.  This time…

  • 1s – Reverse Crunches
  • 2s – Lunge Walk
  • 3s – Shoulder Taps
  • Mosey Back

Everyone go through every station twice.  Mosey back to the flag so we can circle Snoballs a couple times.  Travel around the building any way you want, except running.  Some bear crawled, some lunge walked, some nurred.  Was a strange sight to say the least.  Once reaching the other side…

  • 10 x Dips (IC)
  • 10 x Heels to Heaven (IC)

Travel back around the same way we came, however you choose

  • 15 x Rocky Balboas (IC)
  • 10 x Merkins (IC)

Last round of

  • Alphabets (S-Z)

Mosey back around for

  • 10 x Dips (IC)

And time.

Announcements:

  • The Sandlot will be adding a walk/ruck option for anyone looking for a low impact Monday starting 2/7.  Walkers/Ruckers will do their own thing and be back to join the boot campers for COT.
  • Flat Rock Retreat – 2/18

Prayer Requests:

  • Watts Up & Family
  • Linus’s Family

Moleskin:

Just keep showing up.  Good things will happen.

Thanks for letting me lead this morning.

Making Tracks

3 men @ Coconut Horse saw an opportunity to post in the snow and couldn’t pass it up.  Kudos to Defib and Roscoe for a massive 10 mile run.  YHC pulled up and saw two sets of tracks on the sidewalk in front of the Teeter and knew that there were guys out there gettin after it.  YHC got 45 minutes of solo rucking in.

QSource was cancelled for the week.

Announcements:

  • Rice & Beans – Tuesday
  • Sandlot time change – 5:30 PM

Prayer Requests:

  • Roscoe’s Father-in-law and family
  • Huck’s dad

Moleskin:

“No bad weather.  Just poor equipment.”

Defib’s post on Slack is just good stuff.  Weather just adds excitement to the workout.  Y’all know around here it’s not everyday we get to make tracks in the snow.  Gotta take the opportunities when they come.

It was a good day to ruck all by myself.  With the route I picked, I wasn’t near any main roads for any length of time, so it really felt like I was all alone in the world.  No signs of any other tracks, and every step I took was recorded in the snow, like I owned it all.  The sun wasn’t up, but the heavy snow both falling and on the ground created an eerie glow.  It was just a morning to soak in and remember, as new and unique feelings can be hard to come by when all my days have a tendency to feel the same.

At the same time, I wouldn’t want to stay by myself.  I say it often, but the biggest realization I’ve had as an F3 Gastonia PAX is that I need to get out of my own head and be part of the group, because there’s so much to learn and share being around the rest of you.  And really, over the last year+, I’ve found that the less time I spend alone in my own head, the better off I am.  Your support and your example have made things that were impossible on my own seem relatively effortless and natural.

So sure, it was good to get out and make my own tracks today, but I don’t plan on getting used to it.  Grateful to be part of this group.

Together Everyone Achieves More

We coulda filled 2 dugouts and played 9 innings with the 18 PAX that posted on a cold Monday morning at the Sandlot.  We chose to imitate Superman, Rocky and Freddie Mercury instead.  Partner work was done, and there was a wild sprint home.  Here’s what I remember…

It stormed last week.  Not this week, so I knew we’d have more PAX out.  No special occasion.  Just guys wanting to come get better.  5 for EC, then we kicked off the bootcamp at 0530 sharp.

The Thang:

  • 10 x Goofballs (IC)
  • 10 x Don Quixotes (IC)
  • 10 x Imperial Walkers (IC)
  • 5 x Arm Circles Forwards (IC)
  • 5 x Arm Circles Backwards (IC)

Pledge, and count off, then head towards the park.  Stop at the entrance for Bandit’s favorite:

  • 10 x Dying Cockroaches (IC)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)

Mosey on in, headed for the first picnic shelter on the left for a little work

  • 10 x Step-ups (Each Leg)
  • 10 x Superman Pullups (IC)
  • 10 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 10 x Step-ups (Each Leg)

Head to the parking lot for the Main Event.

Today’s workout was meant to be a 2nd F workout, with the goal to get to know somebody better than you did when you showed up.  We partnered up, and PAX were encouraged to choose someone they hadn’t seen for a while, or didn’t know.  Well there was only one Bandit, and EZ called dibs from across the parking lot.  Everyone else found somebody, so we partnered up and did the following:

  • Mosey to the end of the lot
  • 10 x Reverse Lunges (count both sides)
  • Mosey Back
  • 5 x Squats
  • Mosey to the end of the lot
  • 15 x Merkins
  • Mosey Back
  • 5 x Squats

So that was the pattern, and we continued with

  • 20 x American Hammers
  • 25 x Rocky Balboas
  • 30 x LBCs

PAX were to stay with their partner the whole time and go the same pace.  Working in pairs got the mumblechatter rolling, with everyone getting to know their brother better over the course of the workout.

Once we hit 30 x LBCs, we stopped for

  • 6 inches (YHC countdown from 20)
  • 10 x Flutter Kicks (IC & not by 5s)

We were having so much fun, that we ran it back, but this time in reverse, doing called exercises on one end and 5 squats on the other through

  • 25 x Rocky Balboas
  • 20 x American Hammers
  • 15 x Merkins
  • 10 x Reverse Lunges (count both sides)

Once we wrapped up, we headed back to the picnic shelter to check out with:

  • 10 x Step-ups (each leg)
  • 10 x Superman Pullups (IC)
  • 10 x Freddie Mercuries (IC)
  • 10 x Step-ups (each leg)

Then we moseyed back to the entrance to repeat what we did before, with a twist.  This time Bandit led the Dying Cockroaches, and he pushed the PAX a little harder than the Q, with

  • 20 x Dying Cockroaches (Bandit’s Cadence)
  • 10 x Mike Tysons (IC)
  • 10 x Mountain Climbers (IC)

We were at the entrance to the park, one good Jailbreak away from glory, and we didn’t want to let a good Jailbreak opportunity go to waste, so the challenge was issued and claimed by the PAX as JJ led the way home, followed by a rush of PAX just throwin it down on the way back to the flag.  Once home, we had some time for Mary, with

  • 10 x American Hammers (IC – Watts Up)
  • 20 x Big Boys (OYO – Tube)
  • 10 x Heels to Heaven (IC – Hermey)

And that was that.  Strong work by all.

Announcements
