The Storm Handoff

Well, it has been about 18 months since YHC took over as Site Q here at The Storm. Part of me wasn’t ready to hand it off, but I knew it was time for someone else to take the lead. I have thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to lead as Site Q here and also have learned a lot.

Now let’s get on with the work!

No FNGs, quick disclaimer and then the pledge

Warm-up

SSH x 35

Windmills x 15

Mountain Climbers x 15

Merkins x 15

The Thang

Mosey to side parking lot next to building. All PAX line up side by side, arm length apart. Squats in cadence x10

Form two lines parallel with each other for an Indian Run. Once everyone cycled through, stop for a called exercise. For some reason, once Termite got to the front of the line, he took off like he was an Indian being chased by a cowboy. I guess he thought we were playing Cowboys and Indians…Anyway, after we managed to get him back to the group. We made 3 laps around the parking with 6 different exercises called.

YHC made a brief speech about being the Site Q for the past 15 months and was time to hand it off to someone else, which is Dirt. Before Dirt would take over as Q, Roscoe said we need to have a quick ceremony, passing of the torch or a christening of some sort to make it official. So Dirt got down on his knees, and YHC said some Yada Yada, jibber jabber comments and that was it. YHC is not very creative, so there wasn’t much to it. Sorry Dirt, it was more than I received from Mayor last August. 🙂

At this point, Dirt takes over with the Q, and to the wall we went. Wall sits, overhead presses, hip slappers, maybe feet stompers, touch toes and hips. Rinsed and repeated 3x.

Next was four corners around the parking lot. First corner, 10 markins, corner 2, 20 Squats, then 30 mountain climbers, and last corner, 40 flutter kicks. Back to corner one. Rinse and repeat, but this time we escalate with each exercise. We now have 2 1/2 minutes left, but 10 more merkins  and mosey back to shovel flag.

Foggy @ The Storm – 11/19

Twitter and Slack communication sent out notifying PAX to come out to YHCs beatdown. – Check

Wienke complete – Check

Alarm set with correct time – Check

It was a very foggy morning driving to The Storm this morning. Received a late text the night before from Sargento indicating he would be getting some EC in by running from his house to the Storm and wanted a ride back home after the workout. As I was driving to The Storm, I was hoping he didn’t run down Cramer Mountain due to the heavy fog. As I pulled into the parking lot, noticed his car was already there, along with 14 other cars. Nice turnout for the gloomy morning.

Its 5:30am, time to get going. No FNGs, so gave an abbreviated disclaimer and the Pledge

Tuna 200, Van 1

For months, we had been waiting for the day. Medicine Woman, a man who we thought had sworn off running about 42 years ago, had been training for months, was looking kind of soccer-armish. Sargento, the Girazelle, had been so confident in his skillz that he ran a total of 8 miles in the 6 weeks leading up to the date, wasn’t looking soccer arm-ish but was willing to push the rock. The Silver Fox had his game face on. We were READY for Oct 25th, the TUNA 200!

Due to our “fleetness of feet,” we had secured a later start time of 815. We planned to meet at

345 in order to head out at 4. Starting off the morning right, Hushpuppy decided stroll in at 3:58 with CPAP machine strap marks still visible.  Great start men!!!!

20 minutes into the drive, POTTY BREAK (Sargento and Hushpuppy have bladders the size of pistachios, BTW)!! Eventually, we made it to the starting location with 30 minutes to spare. Termite was so amped up for his initial run he DECIDED TO RUN A MILE before his 5.5. mile leg. (Idiot!!)On the more intelligent side, however, he decided to start at the back of the pack in order to quickly sprint past several people in order to inflate his kill ratio.  The first 4 legs went off without too many issues, other than Termite complaining about everything and everyone else complaining about the gnats. At leg 5, Omaha!!! Sargento was supposed to run 9, however, due to his relative lack of training as mentioned above, it was felt that 9 miles may not be wise. Hushpuppy and Quicke stepped in. Hushpuppy covered the final 3 miles for him, setting a personal record for fastest mile!! Qik$ finished leg 6 after his EC on leg 5 and we met up with Van 2.

After saying good-bye to Van 2, we went to eat at White Swan BBQ somewhere in the middle of nowhere Eastern NC. It didn’t matter that there was more grease than actual meat in the meal, we were too hungry to notice. We then went ahead to what we thought was the exchange zone for some well deservedR&R. pQuise was the navigator for this part of the trip, and we were there in a jiffy. About 40 minutes before Termite was supposed to run, Sargento made the comment “I think we are in the wrong place!” After some confusion amongst ourselves and even the race officials, we went back 20 minutes to the actual exchange zone. Keesh was not allowed to sit up front for the rest of the trip.

Because of all the confusion, Termite started complaining again. He was all stretched out and then he had to get in the vanand he tightened up again (not to self, do not get old, or if you do, please do not be like Termite!). So many high points, but I think the most impressive was that Slaw became even more of a big deal than Boudin. If you want to know the story, ask Slaw, Erica, or Anne. Medicine also was referred to as a “knight in shining armor” by one of the many women who we ran with. Finally, Sargento may have used some “booger sugar” and ran a sub 7:15 average for a 4.16 mile leg! On the downside of this group of runs, MW pulled a calf, got chicked, and had a dog chase him. Qu#(%e’ got dicked. He doesn’t want to talk about it.

Handoff to Van 2 at about 1230 AM, ready for some more R&R at Pink Hill Elementary. Note to future groups: when you hand off at an exchange zone in the Tuna 200, it is smarter to stay at the old exchange zone for sleep instead of moving to the next and more crowded one.

Met with Van 2 to exchange again at about 430 AM. Termite was complaining and worrying about being late for the exchange. We struggled but made it through. Highlights included eating more greasy food, watching the sunrise over Piggly Wiggly, SlawBag becoming SlawDOG (we have pitcuresto prove it), DL dropping a “S-bomb” due to having to run up a bunny hill at the end of his last leg, and finishing!! Low point points were eating more greasy food, MW getting chicked again, Hushpuppy running over a ballard (metal post), and DL almost missing a handoff from Slaw. The after-race party include a fair amount of “rehydration” by several members while waiting for van 2 to finish.

All in all, an amazing group of guys and an amazing run. It was awesome to see men like MW for pushing himself past what they thought they could ever do. Sargento, for pushing through the lack of training, being an optimistic, steady rock for the group, and teaching us to sing any stupid phrase that was spoken by anyone, anywhere. Termite, 59 years old, averaging 9 minute miles, and then getting up the morning after and running 4 miles (he complained he was too tight and needed to loosen up)!! SlawDOG, for being a true HIM gentleman and running with the women in the middle of the night. Hushpuppy, for stepping up and driving, running, and setting PRs. DL, HAPPY BIRTHDAY and amazing job legging out 20.3 miles at 54.99 years old! Quiche’, for showing the group that you can take 4 naps in one day, make soccer arms sexy, and make up for ATand the rest of Van 1 running their mouths faster than their legs.

Thanks for the memories HIMs,

Van 1

P.S. If you think this is too long, keep your criticistic comments to yourself!

A Morning @ The Storm

So two weeks ago, YHC was to Q @ The Storm and had planned to get up earlier than normal to get in some EC. The night before, set the alarm, had workout clothes ready, and thought to be prepared for the early rise. Problem was that when changing the alarm to an earlier time, also changed the setting from AM to PM, so did not wake up until 5:30am when M’s alarm went  off… So today was the make up Q.

It’s 4:20, alarm goes off and out of bed I go. Arrive at The Storm around 4:50 to get in a little EC run. That early in the morning and your all by your self, you are definitely in the gloom! Finished up my EC around 5:25 and several PAX were already circled up for some small talk and stretching..

It’s 5:30 am, time to get at it!

Where’s the Q?

YHC was scheduled to Q this morning at The Storm. Notification was sent out on Twitter, weinke was prepared, and YHC set alarm early for some EC. Everything was ready to go and looking forward to a good beatdown.

Tuesday morning, alarm goes off. Uh oh! it is 5:30am, YHC set alarm for PM, not AM, and if it wasn’t for the M’s alarm, I may still be sleeping. Jumped up, changed clothes, and out the door I went. That had to be the fastest YHC has gotten ready for bootcamp.

Showed up at The Storm, not really sure if anyone would still be there. Well, there were several cars, but didn’t see anyone. Parked the car, placed the shovel flag in the ground and looked around for everyone. There they were, up by the school. Sprinted to the meet them and Timeframe had taken the lead to Q since YHC was fartsacking.

Timeframe finished out the workout. We ran, did called exercises, and ran again.

Finished up back at the Shovel Flag with some Mary…..

Nothing but Respect @ The Storm; 8/6/19

Termite had Q @ at the Storm and was ready when all the PAX started showing up. He had several tires with straps all laid out on the ground along with the large coupons. What were we about to get ourselves into?

No FNGs, quick and modified disclaimer.

The Warm-up

We all had white pvc sticks with end caps that were about 5 ft long. What are we going to do with these? Each PAX had a stick and we did various stretches and warm-up exercises with them.

The Thang:

Now the exciting part. We partner up into 4 teams.

On one end of parking lot, partner one pulls the tire for 5 pulls, then 5 right side pulls, and then 5 left side pulls, while partner 2 has large coupons doing curls, overhead presses, and squats. Once partner 1 is finished, you flap jack and partner two starts pulling the tire.

When Partner two is complete with his reps, place large coupon in tire and both PAX pull tire to end of parking lot next to school building and then do 10 merkins.

Now we work our way back to the starting point and finish with 10 squats.

Rinse and repeat 4 or 5 times…..

Finish workout with a round of Mary….

Something Smells Fishy

As YHC was pulling into the school parking lot, noticed a lot of trees around the school had toilet paper hanging from limbs. My first thought was The Storm had had some visitors from South Point over the holiday weekend. Got out of the car, placed shovel flag in ground while some PAX were already discussing what looked like a prank. Someone said it was probably Senior pranks by the school underclass.

What we didn’t know was that the prank was still in progress. All of sudden, we noticed 3-4 silhouettes coming from the back side of the school. They made there way down the sidewalk by the side entrance and continued to roll the trees with toilet paper. After a couple of minutes, all headed back except one individual. He continued to roll the trees. All of a sudden, Sister Act yelled out, “You’ve been caught, we have you on camera”. That kid took off running so fast, I think he did a 40  yard dash in about 2.5 seconds! It was too funny!

It’s 5:32am and time to get to work….

Warm-up

SSH x 20 I/C

IW x 20 I/C

Mountain Climbers x 20 I/C

Merkins x 15 OYO

The Pledge

Mosey to entrance

Route 66 up to the circle, doing Burpees at each light post = 66 total for the PAX that we’re not able to make it out to the Memorial Day Murph

At the round about, we all circle up for some more fun

Round of Happy Jacks x 5

Do 5 side straddle hops in cadence then after the 5th one everyone does two jump squats. Like this… Side Straddle Hops IC: One, two, three, ONE! One, two, three, TWO! One, two, three, THREE! One, two, three, FOUR! One, two, three, FIVE! Quickly followed by two jump squats.

Next – Dr. W (a sufferable 8-count ab exercise that combines Dolly, Rosalita, and the W)

1 is legs apart like a Low Dolly, 2 is legs together, 3 is raise the legs to Rosalita position (45-60 degrees-ish), 4 is spread ‘em, 5 is The W (hands together and stretching forward between your legs), 6 is the return to your back (legs still up), 7 is legs together, 8 is legs down. We did about 7 or 8

Howling Monkey

In a circle, everyone grabs their ankles in Monkey Humper fashion (or Gorilla Humper, for the fearless) . The first person does ten monkey humpers followed by the next person and so on as in other “ring of fire” exercises. Don’t let go of the ankles or all PAX do 10 burpees. No One let go of the ankles. Legs are burning now.

Mosey to softball field. On the way as we pass by school entrance, smell of dead fish. The pranksters didn’t bring just toilet paper, they decided to leave dead fish on side walk at entrance to school. Man that  was an awful smell as we passed.

Coupons – lined up shoulder to shoulder going down hill behind dugout. PAX at bottom passes coupon PAX to his left, up to PAX at top of hill. Then pass coupon to right back down hill while last PAX runs to bottom of hill. Continue until all PAX rotate back to original position.

Mosey back to flag, taking the long way around, but not by the smelly fish.

Finish up with a round of Mary

Good Friday Downtown

Today is Good Friday, the day Jesus was crucified on the Cross over 2000 years ago. He suffered this death for my sins! Wow! An incredible sacrifice, Amazing Grace, and lavish love!

I wanted to Q this morning because I wanted to do something special for Good Friday. I am not a creative person so the workout really didn’t relate to Good Friday or the meaning behind it. However, I was reading a recent devotion on Good Friday and decided that is how I would end the workout, something focused on Christ’ s sacrifice on the cross.

It’s Friday morning, 5;30am and time to get to work!

No FNGs and a quick disclaimer

Warm up

SSH x 25 I/c

Mountain Climbers x 20 I/c

Moroccan Nightclubs x 20 I/c

Merkins x 10 OYO..

The Pledge

Lets Mosey!

A quick Mosey around the block and now time for the fun!

The Cooper:

10 burpees, 10 Squats, then 10 Merkins. Lap around parking lot Then 9,9, 9 of same. Count down to 1. Gets pretty brutal when you get to around 5. This about the time when Whoopie reminded the PAX, that if we feel the workout it tough for us right now, remember it is nothing compared to what Jesus went through on the cross.

As the PAX we’re completing  the Cooper, we all did some core work and then a mosey around the block.

We all met back up at the flag poles for a little round of Mary.

YHC finished the workout a few minutes early so we could focus on a devotion  related to Good Friday.

YHC found the following devotion on Crosswalk and read it to the PAX.

A Prayer for Good Friday: It Is Finished
By Debbie McDaniel

But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” Isaiah 53:5

His story reminds us of so much more – we are redeemed. We are set free. We have been given new life, an open door, through Jesus Christ.

though many times we may somehow think we’re invincible in this life, or even led to believe that we are not “needy” of a Savior, when hit with life’s struggles or face to face with painful events, we quickly remember, we need help. We need a Savior.

We have One, who also was broken, in ways we could never fully comprehend, yet he remained strong, and chose to endure it all – for us.

He extends grace to remind us we don’t have to stay stuck in our struggle and pain. He holds good in store through it all, able to bring greater purpose, greater beauty, greater strength. He never intends for us to remain in the pit of our despair. For he breathes fresh life.

God brought beauty out of the brokenness of the cross, he gives beauty for our ashes. His sacrifice offers forgiveness for our sin. The power of the Resurrection gives hope for our future.

There’s such power there. God sent His Only Son. He loved. He gave. There was no other way…but this.

As we enter into this weekend, may we take a closer look at the reality of it all. The suffering of the cross. The huge sacrifice that Christ paid. The pain that was endured. The great cost of His gift. The love that was shown. The freedom He offers. It’s not a flowery picture of fluff and stuff. But it’s the most powerful story ever told.

Incredible sacrifice. Amazing grace. Lavish love.

Throughout this weekend, let’s spend time and focus on what Jesus did for us on the cross and why.

Closed out with the following prayer.

Dear God,

We remember today, the pain and suffering of the cross, and all that Jesus was willing to endure, so we could be set free. He paid the price, such a great sacrifice, to offer us the gift of eternal life.

Help us never to take for granted this huge gift of love on our behalf. Help us to be reminded of the cost of it all. Forgive us for being too busy, or distracted by other things, for not fully recognizing what you freely given, what you have done for us.

Thank you Lord that by your wounds we are healed. Thank you that because of your huge sacrifice we can live free. Thank you that sin and death have been conquered, and that your Power is everlasting.

Thank you that we can say with great hope, “It is finished…” For we know what’s still to come. And death has lost its sting. We praise you for you are making all things new.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

Men, thanks for the opportunity to lead this morning, it was an honor.
