A Christmas Story

Record number this am at Coconut Horse for a Christmas Eve stroll through G-town. We had pax from Cramerton, G-town, NOGA, SOFA, and everywhere in between along with an FNG. We had non-runners, active runners training for marathons, and retired runners. It was crazy. We even had an un-named public servant runner with some obscene 80’s picture on his shirt (“Scoping out the Babes”). There were multiple pax out for EC who came in early and stayed late. Overall great run this am, even for the Q who is not a fan of running.

Welcome Randy, (respect) our FNG. We EH’d each other into showing up this am-#ISI. He worked out with Roscoe and Whoopee pre-F3 several years ago and couldn’t move his arms later in the day (compliments of Roscoe) so this was a big step for him. Stroganoff pulled the name out of his…….head after a brief pause. Hope to see Randy out there at the running Ao’s in the future…..this will eventually lead to other days but we will keep that to ourselves for now. Merry Christmas-Whoopee

12 Days of Christmas, Qu!ch$ style

A couple of weeks ago, Tesla had hit up yours truly and Sargento about assisting with the Q at some workouts over the Holiday season. Given that I will very quickly harass the QIC during a work-out, I figured that it was my turn to step up and be harassed.

After some EC with Boudin (Sargento, where were you!!), I arrived at the Yank about 10 minutes til 7 with a couple of cars already waiting a beatdown.  Over the next 10 minutes, people gradually tricked in until we reached our final number of 13. At 700, we started:

Disclaimer- it was a weak one, TBH, but there were no FNGs

Pledge

Warm-up- Mosey to the Field of Dreams (grumbling ensued from Top Hat)

The Thang- 12 Days of Christmas- and yes, there was singing involved

First Day- A plank for abs of steel like Whoopee (couldn’t think of other names that ended in “-ee”)

Second Day- Werkins + Previous day

Third Day- LBCs + Previous days

Fourth Day- CDDs + previous days

Fifth Day- BURPEES (great minds think alike, Strogie-Wogie) + previous days

Sixth Day- Supermans (on stomach, arms and legs elevated, back arched) + previous days

Seventh Day- Bobby Hurleys + previous days

Eighth Day- Flutter Kicks + previous days

Ninth Day- Groiners (plank to feet outside of hands, almost a frog position, then back) + previous days

Tenth Day- Neckies!!! (hadn’t done them in a while) + previous days

Eleventh Day- Tempo Mericans (1-2-3 down, 4 up) + previous days

Twelfth Day- Monkey Humpers + previous days

Each of the PAX had a number 1-12.  On the day of their exercise, each one had to sing his exercise. Each exercise was done for 30 seconds. At the end of each “day,” Q decided to have “Christmas trivia,” where the person who sung that day had to answer a trivia question. If the question was answered incorrectly, we ran a lap as punishment.  Correct answers allowed for quick movement to the next day.

The exercises went well other than the fact that the PAX knowledge of the Christmas Story was not nearly as good as they thought. On day 12, we had to shorten the exercises to 15 seconds each so we could end on time.

All in all, a good work-out from my perspective. There was an appropriate amount of mumble chatter and  laughter. We also learned a little about each other.  Tool Time’s anniversary is today, I believe, and I might have ruined it for him due to the shoulder work we did. Freight knows more about Kama Sutra than the rest of us. When Boudin sprints, he does it using very small steps (probably from his Soccer playing days). Abba, although having attended a very well thought of church also attended by the Quik, apparently does not know what a manger is. Quiche chooses his exercises not to get a good workout, but to create pain and injury so he can line his pockets with co-pays. Pockets is definitely the best singer in the PAX. Your typical manger scene or church play just might have a couple of things in it that may not be completely be Biblically or historically accurate. And last but not least, we learned that &ui(he can plan and survive (barely) a work-out where running is not the primary activity.

Good work men!

5K Folsom Style

OWaking up to a good rain shower, YHC remained optimistic of the turnout at Folsom. I rolled in early for a quick jog to get the heart and lungs woke up. Ahhh, here come the headlights. No rain while chit chatting but when 6:30 hit, here the rain came. Well it was short lived. Looks like we have an FNG (Gumby’s 2.0 Pokey)

warmup

Thang

mosey the long way around the park by the ballfield and ponds. Stop at the lower lot. Line up for Triple Nickel

5 Burpees, run to the other end of the parking lot for 5 jump squats, rinse repeat x5

I took a moment to quote Eisenhower. “Leadership is the art of getting someone to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”  That’s how we build up Qs and good kids. When you make the task at hand something those around you want to do or enjoy doing, they become leaders as well.

mosey up around the amphitheater then over to the pond parking lot. YHC couldn’t just run by this famous lot without some Route 66. Train? 5 burpees OYO.

line up, 1 Bobby hurly, lunge walk to next line for 2, so on to 11, mumble chatter was getting pretty heavy here, especially with Pokey, who called out the Q later on!

Mosey back around to start to grab jump ropes, then mosey to the tennis courts. Partner up; partner 1 jump ropes AMRAP while part 2 runs to the other end of the courts and back, switch. At this point Gumby’s 2.0 yells at Q(Gumby’s partner) to “hurry up!” Q calls for 5 burpees in response . Ha! Rinse and repeat x3. Next, squats x3. Last, goofballs x3. Again lots of mumble chatter throughout. Let’s mosey one last lap around the courts to get in the final tenth of a 5k total.

Announcements Joe Davis Run, Christmas!

YHC took us out in prayer

Honor to Q men! Nice work and ice up those legs. Have a great Christmas and remember why we celebrate it. The birth of the Sky Q. Aye!

Stroganoff’s 12 Days of Christmas

On a holiday weekend with a chance for rain, I wasn’t sure how many would make it out for the workout today.  As usual, I was not disappointed when 14 showed in the gloom including one FNG (welcome Emoji/Michael Ginther).

After some completely inappropriate mumble chatter just before the workout started concerning my Santa hat, we went through the disclaimer and got ready to get after it.

T-Claps to Roscoe for breaking out the 1987-88 Ashbrook High School Key Club shirt.  This was from my senior year of HS and really took me back……..take it easy.

We went through a quick IC Warm-Up:

There was a train in the distance that was heard by all but I decided to skip these burpees (we had some in our future) even though a few prematurely started them.

SSH X 10

Imperial Walkers X 10

Mosey to the big flag in front of the museum for the Pledge.

The Thang

Mosey to the track at Grier Middle School for the first annual rendition of Stroganoff’s 12 Days of Christmas.  I had not idea how this would go or how long it would take.  It went something like this:

Imagine singing along to the classic tune and inserting exercises for each day brought to you by your F3 Q as follows:

On the first day of Christmas, your F3 Q brought to you…….

1st Day – 1/2 Lap around the track

2nd Day – 12 Bobby Hurleys + 1st Day

3rd Day – 12 Merkins + 2nd Day + 1st Day

4th Day – 12 LBC’s + 3rd Day + 2nd Day + 1st Day (You get the idea of the repeated sets just like the song goes)

5th Day – 5 Buuuuuurrrrpeeeeessss (sung just like 5 Golden Rings with a much higher, out of tune voice) + first 4 days

6th Day – 12 Flutter Kicks + first 5 days

7th Day – 12 Squats + first 6 days

8th Day – 12 CDD’s + first 7 days

9th Day – 12 Hillbillies + first 8 days

10th Day – 12 Mountain Climbers + first 9 days

11th Day – 12 Side Straddle Hops + first 10 days

12th Day – 50 Moroccan Nigh Clubs + first 11 days

As the days stretched on, the mumble chatter became less and less as did the personal space intrusion during the squats.  This can mean a number of things, the workout sucks or the PAX is just mad.  Not sure what this one was.  I must admit the last few sets of Bobby Hurleys and burpees were not fun.  I will be sore.

However, we still had a few minutes so plenty of time for a set of my favorites at the picnic tables:

Dips X 15

Step UPS X 20

Derkins X 15

Mosey back to the Schiele for a quick round of Mary before the bells ring:

LBC’s X 20

Flutter Kicks X 15

Times up.

Good work this morning men.  I wasn’t sure how the multiple 12 reps would go and how long it would take but it turned out to be a good workout for myself.  I hope it was a worthwhile endeavor for everyone.

Announcements (there were some but it turned out to be a disaster).

Unfortunately we had several prayer requests including remembering those that may be experiencing their first Christmas without a loved one.  This can be difficult.

We finished off with Name-O-Rama that included the FNG – Emoji plus a quick note from a book I just finished – Wooden on Leadership by John Wooden.  His Father gave him a notecard when he finished elementary school with the following instructions on it that was the 7 Point Creed as a guideline for living each day:

  1. Be true to yourself
  2. Help others
  3. Make each day your masterpiece
  4. Drink deeply from good books, including the Good Book.
  5. Make friendship a fine art.
  6. Build a shelter against a rainy day.
  7. Pray for guidance and give thanks for your blessings each day.

Good words to live by.

For the Christmas Eve Eve effort, I handed out a copy of a book by Andy Andrews – The Traveler’s Gift, as a token of my appreciation for the attendance and the push all year.  If anyone else in the region would like a copy, just PM or text me and I’ll be happy to get you a copy.  I think it’s a great book and has helped my along the path.

Many thanks again for allowing me to lead the group this morning.  It was an honor.

Merry Christmas to all the Gastonia Region PAX and your families.  I’m grateful for each and everyone one of you.  Keep pushing the rock.

Until the next one.  Aye!

B.O.M.B.S. by the Gross

Fear is a powerful motivator. A few weeks ago, Spiderman told the Downtown PAX that if he didn’t get some men to step up and Q, the following workouts would become “more painful”. For some reason, the 45 minutes YHC spends under the oppressive boot of Spiderman is long and painful enough. When he asked for a Q after last  Friday’s workout, YHC gladly stepped up.

YHC followed Sargento’s lead and consulted the F3 exicon for help. YHC decided on simple routines with coupons, so B.O.M.B.S. and the “Gross” made the Weinke complete. YHC is a Midoriyama Homie, so the simpler, the better.

As YHC rolled in, he observed the usual suspects getting in some EC before the workout began. Roscoe, Pizza Man, Monk and Whoopee were getting it done as YHC parked the truck. As it got closer to 5:30, more and more PAX kept showing up. It was awesome to see a total of 20 men (YHC not included) post. F3 Udders from Greensboro posted since he was in town visiting the in-laws for Christmas! Great to have you with us, Sir! With 5:30 on the clock and everyone circled up, time to get started.

Warm Up:

  • Seal Jacks x 15 IC
  • Low, Slow Squats x 15 IC
  • Toy Soldiers x 15 IC
  • Don Quixotes x 15 IC at Warp Speed (Good to see Tool Time finally warming up to these)
  • Dying Cockroaches x 15 IC

PLEDGE

The Thang:

Mosey around the West parking lot real quick then partner up for some B.O.M.B.S.

Partner #1 performs said exercise while partner #2 runs length of parking lot and back. Reps are in aggregate.

Burpees – 50

Overhead Claps – 100

Merkins- 150

Big Boy Situps – 200 (YHC will ensure these are performed on grass next time- QFail #1)

Squats – 250

After all PAX are complete 5 Burpees OYO due to train traffic

Next, all PAX grab a coupon out of YHC’s truck. Correct pronunciation of the word coupon was quickly discussed. Depends on which side of Macon (Georgia)- Dixie line you’re from, apparently.

Set up for the Gross. 12 exercises x 12 reps per exercise = 144 (1 gross). Exercises were:

  1. Block Webbs (one of the PAX voiced his displeasure of performing these on asphalt due to his soft, supple knees). YHC called BS and exercise was performed anyway. Going forward, these will performed on grass as well- QFail #2
  2. Curl to Overhead Press
  3. Kettleblock Swings
  4. CDD’s (IC)
  5. Standing Block Push (F3 Canteen’s chest and shoulder builder)
  6. Upright Rows
  7. Block Flutter Kicks (IC)
  8. Thrusters
  9. Mike Tysons
  10. Shrugs
  11. Merkins (IC) Whoopee wanted to add some added difficulty to these by literally locking up with YHC while performing these. YHC enjoyed the challenge. YHC also wonders which scent of AXE body spray Whoopee uses. Smelled good!
  12. Freddie Mercury (IC)

It must also be noted the QFail #3 occurred multiple times during this evolution. YHC completely forgot the proper protocol before beginning exercise (In position, ready, move). Thank you, Freight and Tool Time for keeping YHC honest.

With just a few minutes left YHC called for some Mary.

  • Pattycakes x 15 IC (show to know)
  • Hip Rock and Raise x 15 led by Tool Time.
  • Slaughter Stopper(20 Burpees OYO, but only got to 15 when time was called)

Announcements:

  • Joe Davis Run 1/6/18
  • Rooster 1/20/18
  • Krispy Kreme challenge 2/3/18 (See Sargento for details)

Prayer Requests:

  • The McNulty family
  • PAX who have lost loved ones recently
  • Remember the True Reason for the season
  • Also, YHC forgot the military and their families (QFail#4)

YHC took us out in Prayer.

Moleskin:

YHC would like to just let everyone know how much F3 has been such a positive change in his life. He has met so many High Impact Men and is honored to call all of them brothers. He finds himself EHing every man he crosses paths with just to get them out and see what they don’t know they are missing. He finds himself (with help from the SKY Q) being a better husband, dad, brother, uncle and servant. Thank You, Men. It was truly an honor to lead!

Great work by everyone today (as usual).

It was great to have Udders from Greensboro with us today! Will definitely post up your way when in the neighborhood!

Merry Christmas to Everyone!

Slaw

the W workout

So as YHC mentioned in his last backblast, I printed off the latest list of exercises on the F3nation website last week. It’s like being a kid in a candy store! To my surprise and joy there are lots of new routines and exercises to be found that we haven’t experienced before. Being the kind of guy who likes to try almost anything at least once, when Qing I like to throw in a couple new things each time. This is what I remember…

Warmup:

Morrocan Night Clubs x15 IC, Monkey Humpers x15 IC, maybe something else

Pledge of Allegiance

Mosey toward the car that came in hot and do a couple quick laps to welcome Madoff to the workout then head up to the wide sidewalk.

Wheel of Animals (from the W section in the exercise listing)

From the full trash can over to the knobs near the entrance to the school, the PAX will:

Frog Hop then do 10 Merkins

Bear Crawl back then do 10 Merkins

Duck Walk to the knobs then 10 Merkins

Crab Walk back then 10 Merkins. This was a pretty quick routine but got the blood pumping real fast.

Mosey up to the softball and baseball fields, get a count off then mosey back to where we started for

The Thang: Walls of Jericho (also from the W section in the exercise listing)

Using the practice soccer field fence as the “walls” of Jericho, the PAX would work it’s way around doing 7 exercises with 7 reps of each for 7 circuits around the “city”. The exercises were:

  • Mountain Climbers (led by Madoff)
  • Don Quixotes (led by TimeFrame) Certain unnamed members of the PAX made mention that this isn’t really an exercise but instead merely a stretch. YHC contends that if it is just a stretch and not worthy of being elevated to actual exercise status, why do so many PAX fear and avoid said EXERCISE? Nuf said.
  • Burpees (led by previously mentioned unnamed PAX)
  • Lunges (led by Tesla)
  • Rockette Dips (led by Boudin) These will definitely go down as having been the most fearlessly and effectively led Rockette Dips any of us have ever performed.
  • Goofballs (proudly led by Dr. Seuss)
  • Dying Cockroaches (led by Steve Lawing)

This was a pretty cool and fun routine that kept the PAX together which led to much mumble chatter and good times. Unfortunately my extended moseying and stuff made us run out of time and only achieve 5 circuits. Q fail, YHC will do better next time.

Mosey back to the start for 15 Nolan Ryans IC. We’re done.

Prayer requests and announcements.

Thank you for the company this morning men. It was a blast! Merry Christmas!!!

Inchworms and Broad Jumps

The guys started showing up around 5:20 a.m.  I noticed a few cars, but its not how many cars show up its how many people get out them. 2 cars 5 PAX. The Stanley crew showed up in one vehicle than began ribbing each other about who lived in the nicer neighborhood.

Let’s do this!

Pledge

Warmup: 400 meter run to get the blood flowing.  There was some mumble chatter that this may turn into a running work out.  Not today, but maybe closer to the Joe Davis run.  SSH x 20, Don Quixotes x15, evidently these are Tool Times favorite. The mystery is still unsolved, are they stretches or exercise?   The PAX were quick to let the Q know YHC was counting way too fast. Note to self count slower.  Some PAX even said they felt a bit dizzy.  Finished warmup with Burpees x5 (OYO).

Mosey to the Gazebo for 5 pull ups, 10 plank jacks, and 15 LBC’s rinse and repeat 3 times.

Mosey to the basketball court with a quick stop for a wall sit under the train tracks before completing mosey to the court.

At the court:

15 squats on end line, Inchworm with 5 Merkins at the bottom until you reach half court, Burpee Broad Jumps to the other end line, 15 CDD’s. Mosey back to starting point.  In the demonstration of what we would be doing for the work YHC mistakenly said Derkins which Sargento was quick to correct to CDD’s.  Thanks for keeping me on the straight and narrow Sargento.   The plan was to rinse and repeat 5 rounds, but YHC Omaha (Sometime things look better on paper) after round 2 to replace the inch worm with Goof Balls to half court going forward.  On round 4 replaced Burpee Broad Jumps with Lunges to end line.

Finished work at basketball court with shuttle run:  free throw line, half court, free throw line, and end line.

Mosey back to the Gazebo with another quick stop for a wall sit under the train tracks before completing mosey to Gazebo.  25 dips on wall before hitting the Gazebo for a little Ab work.

30 flutter kicks

20 crunchy frog

15 heels to heaven

10 shoulder taps ( Total of 20)

YHC believes there was one more Ab exercise, but the YHC cannot remember. It may have been some LBC’s.  YHC will do better to remember next time.

Mosey back to parking lot for 5 Burpees (OYO).  With a minute to spare the Q asked Tesla for an exercise, so we end with 20 SSH.

Annoucements:

Joe Davis run, January 6th.

Tool Time Q at the Black Knight on Monday.  Not sure of time.

Name-O-Rama

Prayer

Great work this morning men!  Thank you for everyone who came out.  It was an honor to lead.  I went back and forth about stepping up to take the Q for this morning when Dolph offered it up.  I look at this as my VQ.  My first Q was at running AO at the Storm when it existed which was pretty easy right.  You just go for a run.  I have grown from the experience of planning and leading the workout and writing this Backblast.  Thank you for the opportunity to lead, and I will see you in the gloom.

Boudin  (AKA: The Big Deal, Bluedin)

Football and Rugby Sprints

10 strong on a perfect day for a workout at Midoriyama. Slaw thankfully had his shirt on. Pizza Man got in an extra 1.5 miles (EC) in probably 10 minutes. Great to have JJ with us for his first visit to Midoriyama and it’s always good to have a fellow Tarheel fan. I knew many of our HIM’s have a busy time in this season so I was happy with the turnout. Believe it or not, you will definitely miss all of the kid’s holiday programs and activities when they are gone! Let’s get after it.

Warmup was short. SSH x 5, Cotton Pickers x 5, Hillbillies x 5. Mumblechatter started, even with no Freight or Tool Time.

Mosey to the parking lot near softball Field #4 to find 5 parking spots with sidewalk chalk listing 5 exercises:

10 burpees, 20 Flutter Kicks, 30 CDD’s, 40 Squats, 50 Seal Jacks with each guy starting in a different parking spot. Run a lap around the two parking lots after each exercise. Some guys got in more than a cycle but Q stopped after one cycle. Reminder that this exercise is a lot like our lives. It may seem others are way ahead of you but we each start in different places and have to keep running our own race each day. Each guy is running the same race as you so be open to help each other when you can.

Mosey to the playground, several 2.0’s playing, Omaha, so keep moseying to the small soccer field. 2 bricks awaiting each Pax on the soccer field end line.

Curls x 50

On Your Six Chest Presses x 50

Put down the blocks for Freddie Mercuries (14 IC or so) until Q says Sprint, then sprint to the mid field line, sprint back to the end line then walk back to the mid field line (Sprint, sprint, walk which is suppose to imitate a Rugby match).

WWI’s (OYO) at midfield until Q says Sprint, then sprint to end line, sprint back to mid field line, then walk back to end line. (Wojo would have loved these.)

Repeat this starting with the curls. Crowdpleaser!

Mosey back to playground for 5 pullups, 10 American Hammers x 3 sets.

Mosey to the parking lot near the turd shack for Frisbee Rules Football. YHC had a nice size area with pylons marking the end zones. Pax counted off and split into teams. Had this been traditional football, I believe my team would have easily won, but playing this less than manly version of the game, the other team squeaked out a very close one but I can’t seem to remember the very close score. Speed seemed to be the deciding factor as Pizza Man and Sister Act together were a blur in the gloom! They even ran a basketball fast break one time but traveling was called. There were several Unnecessary Roughness/Illegal Contact penalties that were missed but I am sure fines will be applied when the league office reviews the tape.

I had a short word asking each guy to think about goals for 2018 and be planning on ways to accomplish those in the new year. Remember the Reason for the Season!

Mosey back to the flag. Pledge. 22 for the Vets led by Oompa Loompa. Announcements, Joe Davis Run in Fort Mill Jan. 6th.

COT

*I challenge each Pax to try to post a little more in 2018 and EH a few more guys! An F3 saying is so true, “F3 was what I didn’t know I needed.” I was in pretty good shape, had a few good friends, always tried to live out my faith but F3 has increased all of those areas in my life. Thanks for the chance to lead and thanks to all of the F3 Gastonia HIM’s for a great year!

Smack The Elf

16 brave men came out to Snoballs for a Gastone Q in the rain.

The Thang:

20 SSH

10 Merkins

Mosey around baseball field circle.

Then we played Slap The Elf.

4 pictures of elves. 2 at the top of the hill and 2 at the bottom.  First Elf at the top of the hill 10 Burppes then smack the Elf.  Go to the next Elf and do 10 Sumo Squats then Smack.  Bottom of hill 1 hand release Merkin then Smack The Elf. Next Elf 1 Squat then Smack. Keep going until you have flipped the numbers and completed the double elevens.

Mosy to the back of the soccer fields to the bottom of the hill to woods.20 Monkey Humpers run backwards up hill to bench.Lunge Down then 20 Monkey Humpers. Backwards up then lunge down. 20 Monkey Humpers. Backwards up then lunge down.

Backeards around soccer fields all the way to the pull up bar. (Or hanging bar)

Mosey through the woods to street for 200 yards of backwards run to the finish.

The Moleskin:

Everyone was strong today and did a great job. Stroganoff you did good as well. The Elf was a picture of Whoopee that I found of him online that his wife had posted when he dressed as a gnome for something. Little photo work and he was converted.

Thanks it is always an honor. Gastone Out

Doing more Running

13 Pax and 1 FNG came out on a cool afternoon at Midoriyama. Since I am trying to become a better runner I am trying to increase the mileage at each workout. With that in mind we start.

Pledge

Warm up all in cadence

10 x Don Quiotes

10 x SSH

10 x Cherry Pickers

With that we are off. Mosey to the trail across the road, stop at the entrance and do 5 Burpees. Mosey through the trail and do 5 more Burpees back at the start. Mosey back across the road. Start at the beginning of Tower road and mosey to the first light pole, do one squat. Mosey down Tower Rd adding one more squat at each light pole until we reach the big track. 14 light poles I think. 285 Squats.

For all the Carolina fans we started a Bobby Hurley Mile. 12 Bobby Hurleys and one lap around the half track (if you are a FIA member) Full track if you are a F3 Man. Rinse and repeat until time. Mosey back to the start doing descending Squats at each light pole starting with 20 at the first. 105 Squats. The mumble chatter was great as always. Thank you guys for pushing me.

22 for the VETS and BOM.

I want everyone to keep our new FNG Devin in your prayers. He came out through the efforts of Swimmer. He hasn’t worked out in a while. He used to run half marathons. His Asthma flared up and had to leave early.  Pray that he can come back and be a part of the awesome HIM’s of  Gaston County.

As we go through the day to day routines of life I would like you all to remember to keep your eye on God and his will. The Lord has a plan for you. Listen when he speaks, keep your eyes open and don’t turn your back when you know that the Lord is leading you. Thank you men for becoming a part of my life and Merry Christmas as we celebrate the birth of Christ!!!!
